Politics › LASG To Buhari: Declare June 12 Democracy Day by gratiaeo(op): 3:15pm On May 05, 2015
Kazeem Ugbodaga

The Lagos State Government has charged the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari to declare June 12 Democracy Day in honour of the late politician, Moshood Kashimao Abiola, MKO.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Powers Bureau, Muslim Folami, made the call at a ministerial press conference in Alausa, Lagos, southwest Nigeria on Monday.

He said there was need for the Buhari administration to declare June 12 Democracy Day rather than May 29 in view of the sacrifice Abiola made in the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria.

Folami stated that the Lagos State Government would make representation to the government of Buhari to look for a way to make June 12 Democracy Day to immortalise Abiola.

“It is not only the Lagos State Government that is crying for June 12 to be made Democracy Day, but many Nigerians because Abiola paid the supreme price for our democracy. We will talk to the government in power that this is what people are asking for. Now that our man will now be at the helm of affairs, we believe June 12 will be earmarked as Democracy Day and not May 29,” he said.

Folami also defended the Lagos State House of Assembly for not passing the Freedom of Information, FOI bill since 2012 even when Ekiti State passed the same FOI into law two years ago under the administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi.

He said there were due processes to be followed when passing such a crucial bill that is meant to enhance press freedom, explaining that there might be a mistake somewhere which is delaying the passage of the bill.

However, 26 bills were still pending before the Lagos State House of Assembly about a month left for the dissolution of the Assembly in June.

Some of the bills have been pending since 2012. They are Lagos State Revenue Administration Bills, 2012; Lagos State House of Assembly Budget and Legislative Research Office Bill, 2012; Freedom of Information Bill, 2012; Lagos State Sunset Agency Bill, 2013; Lagos State Health Management Agency Bill, 2014; Lagos State Properties Protection Bill, 2013; Lagos State Examinations Board Bill, 2014; Lagos State Anti-Terrorism Bill, 2012, among others.

However, Folami, while speaking on terrorism, said there was need for increased intelligence and counter-terrorism actions against terrorism in the country, saying that multi-national military cooperation and foreign military assistance were strongly advocated with disclosed parameters of engagement to secure the sovereignty of Nigeria.

He also made a case for State Police, saying there was need for it now or in the future so as to police the states effectively as federal police force was inadequate for the teeming populace.

Politics › Politics Can Be Played Peacefully, Says Oyegun by gratiaeo(op): 7:31am On May 01, 2015
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Oyegun, on Thursday said recent happenings in the country had shown that politics could be played peacefully.

Oyegun said this while receiving a delegation of Former Governors Forum (FGF) at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

According to him, Nigerians should be proud as the outcome of the general elections had taught political leaders a valuable lesson.

“The party would require the contribution of every single, well-intended head because the problem confronting us demands collective efforts to surmount.

“Nigeria is going through a peaceful democratic revolution, all that is happening in the country at present shows that politics do not have to be war,” he said.

He said APC would welcome a strong opposition in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to keep the incoming administration on its toes.

He said “PDP is part of Nigeria’s history” and the APC would be glad to have a formidable opposition party.

“For the PDP, they are part of the country’s history and history in the making. All they need to do is to go into retrospection.

“We will be glad to have a virile opposition. We want the PDP to be strong enough to be able to keep us on our toes,” Oyegun said.

The former Gov. Jim Nwobodo of Anambra State, who spoke for FGF, said politicians should learn to embrace one another and support whoever emerged winner at any election.

He expressed concern over the break-up of the Forum into two factions saying it was unnecessary.

“Nigerian leaders should learn to eschew bitterness in politics and to support whoever emerges victorious at an election.

“I really do not feel it is good for us to have two former governor’s forum. It is good to have a united body regardless of whichever party wins.

“There is no reason to have two parallel bodies representing governors of the APC and the PDP,” Nwobodo said.

He pledged support for the president-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as “humble and principled” adding that the FGF would support Buhari when he assumes office in May 29.

Nwobodo also commended President Goodluck Jonathan for “his rare act of humility in conceding defeat at the polls thereby stemming the anticipated tension and crisis.”

Former Gov. Orji Uzor Kalu of Abia said the parties in opposition will take up the challenge posed by Oyegun and provide a strong and virile opposition in
the days ahead.

Also present were former governors Balarabe Musa, Ahmed Markarafi, Bukar Abba Ibrahim, Okwesilieze Nwodo, Fidelis Tapgun, Niyi Adabayo and Chinwoke Mbadinuju.

Also at the meeting were APC Women Leader, Hajia Ramatu Aliyu, National Auditor, Chief George Muoghalu, National Secretary, Mai Bala Buni, among others.

Questions we should ask, is osun the only Apc State? Is Rauf and his aides receiving their salaries. How do you expect starving workers to come to work for 6 months without pay?. If this is not wickedness tell me what this is. Workers salary invested into electioneering.
Politics › Osun APC Blames PDP Corruption For Nonpayment Of Salaries by gratiaeo(op): 7:39pm On Apr 29, 2015
The  All Progressives Congress has said alleged corrupt practices of the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government are responsible for the nonpayment of workers in Osun State for the past six months.
The spokesperson of the APC in Osun State, Mr. Kunle Oyatomi, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday.
He, however, appealed to the workers to exercise more patience over the salaries issue, while promising that the problem would soon be resolved in less than two months.
The party stated that President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, had promised that he would look into the allocation coming to states immediately after his inauguration on May 29th.
The ruling party in the state assured  that Governor Rauf Aregbesola would do whatever was within his capacity to ameliorate the suffering occasioned by nonpayment of salary.
The statement read,  “The long and difficult battle to defeat the forces of evil that have squandered the nation’s wealth has just ‎been won comprehensively. This has now paved the way for a new, progressive and responsible APC government to take over the affairs of the country and end the suffering which PDP’s corruption, mismanagement and treasury looting have brought on Nigerians including workers in the state of Osun.
“This is a pleasant transition moment that requires sober, intelligent and calculating responses from all stakeholders in the state of Osun, so that we do not turn victory into sorrow by engaging in actions that will create more problems than solutions.
“Alhaji Mohammadu Buhari has promised to solve this problem, it is our duty to exercise patience and trust the integrity of the new President to deliver on his promise.”
“Labour   and civil servants should give the new leader a breathing space to demonstrate his integrity and progressive credentials, which is not in dispute, except in the evil consciousness of the PDP leadership in the state.”
He called on all workers and labour leaders to give peace a chance to enable Aregbesola return the state to the era when he used to pay workers’ salaries before the end of the month.

Politics › Jonathan Rejects Amended Constitution by gratiaeo(op): 2:29am On Apr 15, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan has rejected the amendments made to the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly, The PUNCH has learnt.

A top government official who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent on Tuesday that Jonathan vetoed the amendment on Monday.

The official said the decision of the President not to sign the document was because the amendment did not meet the provisions of Section 9 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.

The source explained that with the return of the document by the President, the letter accompanying it might be read on the floors of the two chambers of the National Assembly any time from Wednesday (today).

He said, “The President has vetoed the constitution amendment and he has sent it back to the National Assembly.

“The amendment did not meet the provision of Section 9 (3) of the constitution which talks about the need for four fifth of the National Assembly to agree with the amendment.”

Section 9 (3) of the Constitution reads:

“An Act of the National Assembly for the purpose of altering the provisions of this section, section 8 or Chapter IV of this Constitution shall not be passed by either House of the National Assembly unless the proposal is approved by the votes of not less than four-fifths majority of all the members of each House, and also approved by resolution of the House of Assembly of not less than two-third of all states.”

The rejected amended constitution granted approval for the separation of the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation from that of Minister/Commissioner of Justice

Sloan:
I think generationally madness has destroyed your brain. The road back to Iboland is open, go back! You are not wanted and never invited! Yorubas do not want ibos in their lands, that is why they destroyed and killed all the ibo Biafra soldiers at Ore, trying to get to Lagos Yorubaland! One day, ibos will get a worse treatment than they got via the abandoned property saga as they will be forced to carry everything on their heads back out of Yorubaland and escorted to be sure they cross the Niger back to their land and the gates sealed to ibos. Other sensible and respectful Nigerians can still come to Lagos Yorubaland to conduct their business and live. Yorubas will never give an inch of Lagos or any part of its heritage to Ibos even if they are born there or spent their last naira buying land - it is a lease which will expire and ownership revert back to the native Yoruba owners.
Can Yoruba survive without selling their land to Igbos? I doubt
