Oga, calm down small... not everyone working can actually get a car finance... and where in hell will you get a monthly repayment as low as $100?.... make una dey try take am easy nah.. $100 for a car note monthly?... you nor even try say maybe per paycheck, you say monthly.. haba nah... no car shop, bank or finance house will take $100 per paycheck sef, talk more of monthly. Nah 25 years you wan take repay the loan?... abi nah mortgage..

Again, you said nobody lives below $200 daily in the US.... Is there another US in the sky abi nah this same one wey dey on earth?... Oga, calm down... people lack clothing, housing, shelter, and good water in the ALMIGHTY US. I mean even people working 40 hours a week. Guy, if you dey stay US and you don't lack nothing, be grateful to God... and also some hardwork and skills that pays good money. People wey dey do customer care or work for walmart or Amazon warehouse, how much do you think they earn? Now, with the inflation and the cost of things everywhere, how do you expect these people to be able to afford all those things you listed? you need to go out to really see how people dey live oooo.... It's not rosy for everyone out there. Let me ask you a question. All those people on Medicaid, how much you think say dem dey earn annually? Make no mistake, once you start to dey earn a dollar above the Medicaid threshold, you don't qualify for the Medicaid anymore. How you think say those people take dey get healthcare?.... abi nah ER we wan talk... You don go ER before?.... hope you know say your insurance nor cover ER if dem nor admit you?... If you go ER, nothing less than $250 go comot your pocket for copay.... so nah person wey never chop belle full wan go ER?... even if nah ordinary headache dem check you for for ER, you go still pay that $200-$250 copay... Nah rent own we wan talk?.... even for projects, how much you think say rent dey talk now?.... so now person wey dey earn $12.50/hr, work 40 hours a week. How much you think that person earns in a month to be able to afford rent, car note, clothing, food, healthcare, etc?

OChimex:

First, where are you based?

Have you lived in Europe or US, like lived their for years?

What you just said, is it from Google you browse am give me?

Again, did you read where I mentioned poverty is a choice, either by one overdosing on drugs and can’t live a normal life of working and paying bills or by being illegal immigrant?

Pay check to pay check doesn’t mean they are lacking.
Poverty is when one lacks the basic things of life. Pay check to paycheck means you work, paid your bills and have no savings.

Mind you, once’s you are working, you can get a car financing and pay as low as 100$ a month to own a car.
Mr man. I tell you again,
Poverty is by choice in Europe and US. Unless you are doing drugs and or illegal and can’t find a decent work because you don’t have a record.

Stop making a fool of yourself by pulling photos off the internet of homeless people who destroyed their lives with drugs and illegal immigrants who that live in shanties.

Poverty is by choice in US and Europe.
When I first moved to the US, I was changing jobs every month and was so picky that most people offered me jobs but I refused. 😂
This one dey mention trailer parks. Go there, and see if all of them no get cars, electricity, running water, cables, phone, internet, foods.
Not being poor doesn’t me you will be rich, at least you will afford basic necessities of life.
My work is home services industry and I dey go trailer parks all the time to do jobs, I know wetin I dey see there.
Nobody lives below 200 dollars a day in the US Mr Man
When you hear say there is no poverty in US or Europe, it doesn’t me everybody must be Elon Musk, it means, nobody lacks basic things here.
Foods, clothing, shelter, water, name it.

Let me shock you again, those drug destroyed homeless living in tents, govt have a provision for them to be fed, and rehabilitated, but them no gree live normal life sake of say drug don destroy them. They get pulled from the streets and put in shelter for homeless but they always ran away because they can’t live without drugs and don’t want to be rehabilitated.

less than 30k? probably private sector or all those one-man business, definitely not civil servants.. Are you also aware that the federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25/hour? Even people that earn triple of that still struggles... now imagine earning that low..
tensazangetsu20:

People don't earn 30k and lower in naija.

Tourist123:
I landed Nigeria yesterday from the US after 2years of Japing. Nothing seems to have gotten better, things have become very worse! How exactly do people live here in Nigeria? So many people begging you for money. Gosh, I can stay in this country for longer than 3 weeks. I can’t! I just cant!!!
The cab i took from the Airport to my apartment charged my 13k for a 35 mins drive It got me wondering how civil servants with families survive in this country considering how expensive things have become and salaries are constant.

So let's be clear here. Your grouse is that the cab you took from the airport to your apartment costs 13k for a 35 min drive. Let's all do the math together. 13k naira in USD is less than $18. So that means for a 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment, you paid less than $20 in Nigeria. Now let's compare that to the US. How much do you think you would have paid for UBER or LYFT for that same 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment?... Why do we just like to be condescending on our country. For a 35 minutes drive in Yankee, you would pay double, if not triple that amount. So what exactly is the point you are trying to make here for heaven's sake?

Stop the comparison. Enjoy your vacation in peace. Gas in Nigeria is currently less than a dollar for a liter. I'm pretty sure you are one of the ones that is criticizing the current subsidy removal. But back in the country you currently reside, a liter of gas is more expensive than what it is currently selling in Naija, and i bet you buy it happily, smiling sheepishly, but you are quick to condemn naija. You talk about the minimum wage of 30k. Do you think anyone really earn 30k monthly? or are you not aware that it is calculated by the level in the civil service...

Let's all try to calm down a little and use our senses. You take Uber from airport in naija for 13k, and you are here complaining about it. Meanwhile, that same 13k converted to USD won't even pay for a 35 minutes drive wherever you're coming from. Guy, abeg chill.

GboyegaD:

Either part cooks depending on who is available but the weekend soups are mostly made by me while Saturday breakfast is her specialty 90% of the time.

The inspiration for the soup was that we have some peanut butter at home and rather than let it go to waste in November when its best before date is, I decided to use it for something else.

The process is the same as every soup. Cook your proteins with some salt, pepper, and seasoning. Once you know the proteins are tender, add some Palm oil and allow it cook. Then add the peanut butter and some bitterleaf, let them cook well on low heat.

Thanks man! The only problem now go come be where to get fresh bitterleaf... also, i think most of those peanuts dem dey sell for store dey get added sweetener already... so e be like I go just make the peanut butter myself, then find where to get bitterleaf to take run am... I get fried meat for freezer.. nah to just put the meat for pot, add water, salt, seasoning, pepper, and palm oil, then after a while, add the peanut butter and bitterleaf, then everything don set... I greet you. Thanks.

Programming / Re: Chronicle Of A Data Scientist/analyst by GreatKingg: 10:33pm On May 17, 2023
Of course, I get your point.... very valid point. The basic skills needed as an analyst are SQL, PowerBI/Tableau, and Excel. Having experience in Data modeling, Python and SAS gives you an edge during job/resume screening. You are more likely to get an interview if you have those additional skills than someone with just the basic skills.

Your resume is your biggest selling point. How you structure your resume goes a long way in helping to land those interviews and jobs. Your resume has to stand out. A good resume gives you a 60-70% assurance if you're getting the job.... and if you can convincingly defend what you have on your resume during interviews, you are sure of getting that dream job...
KlausMichaelson:

Good point. I am analyst as well, however, there is more to life than limiting oneself to not learning it. Life can be more fun with that knowledge. When you no longer find interest in spending time on your dashboard trying to create visuals like a designer, you will understand what I mean. The opportunity the language alone presents to you cannot be overemphasized.

I just hope you get the point. It's just a simple advice to anyone who is wearing that shoe.

This is not entirely true. Employers outside Nigeria gives a hoot about the nits and grits of their data... not just the reports and dahsboards...

I've been reading similar posts like this on Reddit. It's the same thing abroad.
Programming / Re: Chronicle Of A Data Scientist/analyst by GreatKingg: 6:54pm On May 17, 2023
You chose python a million times because it aligns more with what you do (Data Scientist/MI Engineer). But an analyst will choose Excel, PowerBI and Tableau a million times over python... so you see, different strokes for different folks..
KlausMichaelson:
Tell me to choose between learning:

Python Vs (Excel+Power Bi/Tableau)

I will choose Python a million times. Python has more rewarding to me as a Programmer, a Technical writer and a Data Scientist/Ml Engineer.

Hey, let me give you a tip that will go a long way to help you.

The best way to learn programming is to practice what you watch/learn on the video materials/recordings.... for example, you're currently learning Microsoft excel, as you watch the videos, practice hands-on as you watch. It doesn't matter how long it takes you to complete each video. What matters most is learning and retaining the knowledge. Practicing on your own as you watch helps you retain what you watched/learned. An 8-hour video might take you 24 hours to master, so far you are able to understand and recreate what you learned on your own. After each video recording, practice what you learnt hands-on without looking at the video.

When you get to the SQL aspect, download the SQL studio. That will help you get some hands-on. Same with PowerBI. Download the free version and do a lot of practice.... do some assignments and projects.... this will go a long way to help you during interviews.

Note, you have to dedicate enough time for this. SQL PowerBI, and Excel are the most important skill for a data analyst. SAS is also in high demand now. R and Python are extras... You can add python to make you dynamic. Data modeling is also important.

If necessary, whenever you feel you are ready, let me know. I can help with some assignments and projects, and also some interview tips..
DataDoc:
Day 3: Sunday, 23rd April 2023

Time Spent: 5 Hours 30 minutes

I watched a 4-hour YouTube video by Ahmed Oyelowo. That's an introduction to Microsoft Excel.

I subsequently watched another video by freecodecamp, for 1 hour 30 minutes. I've forgotten the name of the instructor. He had a list of Excel projects and built them from scratch. This one was a bit fast-paced and I was lost at some point. I stopped 30 minutes to the end of the video. I will still complete it and probably rewatch to understand it better.

Total Number Of Hours Spent So Far: 13 Hours 30 Minutes (out of 600 Hours)

2.25% Complete

There is bro.... nor be everything person go lay bare on a public forum like this... but confirmed, naija graduate certificate and the required skills helped a lot.. some background check company dey call naija universities to confirm the authencity of your degree..
omoluabiguy:

There’s not much his naija certificate would do for him here. I have never seen or came across any job in America that asks about your certificates, all they want to know is what skills you got. As a hustler from Naija, if you made it to yankee, it’s like a second chance for you in life to rebuild and restrategize your life

OK sir... I don shut up.... why should I argue with you?... Nigerians with their know-all tales... it's quite easy to know you're talking out of 'no experience'... continue sir... the Lord is your strenght...

Come to think of it, since your brother drives a semi-truck and makes up to $40k a month, it's not a bad idea for you to tell your brother to send you his tax returns, and then you should take a look at his income.... I mean not send to us ooo, he should send it to you so you can check... and maybe by then, you will stop running your stinking mouth like a tap....

For those interested in knowing more about trucks, please read the attached link.

https://www.cloudtrucks.com/blog-post/highest-paying-trucking-salaries

Owner-Operator: This means you own the truck, and also operates/drive it.... That's when you really make good money from truck.... and if you check the pay, you see the annual net income doesn't equate the $40k this clown is throwing around...

Y'all should be careful of these people that seat behind their keyboard in their Iragbaji town somewhere in Osun state throwing figures around, talking about things they have no single idea about.

Again, for the IT, you can ask around and see to enroll in those classes taught by naija instructors... those classes takes between 6-12 weeks, and if you are a fast learner, you should start interviewing in less than 5-6 months. Please note that there are different fields in the IT world.... there is cybersecurity, IT audits, etc.... Data analysis/engineer takes longer time.. cos you have to learn different programming language for this... so it's your choice on what you want..... GOD NOR GO SHAME US OOOOO...
Dshocker:

Shut the Bleep up if you know nothing about truck driving.

IT takes up to a year (that is if you are intelligent to grab easily)

My younger brother drivers a semi truck in the United States (he owns the truck)

Thanks for the well wishes. But I will not suffer again sir. Not even Nigeria could stop me. There will always be a way. If you're in the US, let's connect.

Bro, that @omoluabiguy is kinda correct a lil bit sha oo... but he shouldn't have used the word suffer... see ehn, he was quite right.... reality will start to set in... but since you survive naija, you go surely survive this one too... nah only time... your first few months go surely rough... except you get correct men, I mean real correct men wey go help you navigate this phase... cos nah on student visa you dey, and your working hours dey limited... and as for the humiliation, hmmm, you go take a lot of things ooooo, but again, nah time... just put your head down, find better hustle wey you go fit take dey pay your bills for the time being, then take better career training, and hope for better days... talk to correct men around your area, dem go help with advise on how to go about getting a job for now.... but don't get too comfortable in those jobs, cos there's a lot of better paying jobs out here... you just got to take the right trainings and certifications, invest more time in developing yourself, then you should be good... you see that your naija school certificate wey you think say na scam/waste so, you will come to find out say nah GOLD....

Not before, not now, and will not be forever... You think it's easy for truck drivers to make $40k a month nah him everybody, both the yankee people themselves and all of us never dey drive the truck?... Except you are the truck owner and also the driver, but even at that, you can't make $40k a month cos of expenses and all that.... As a truck driver, you can't just work how many hours as you like.... there are compulsory breaks and rest you must take.... your driving time and everything you do on the truck is being monitored by the company you're driving for... you must take your breaks and rest at the appropriate time... I get men wey dey the truck business, and when I say I get men, nah men wey we dey gather dey steady... so I sabi the business wella.... nah some of them dey even help other naijas to manage their truck biz.... so I know wetin I dey talk.... make una nor mislead people abeg..
Sprumbaba:

Truck driver can make $40k a month but not just now. It is difficult.

Oga, make una try dey calm down small small nah... shooo....

How can you just start throwing figures around like that?... What truck drivers make $30-50k a month... abeg calm down small..... don't mislead the guy at all....

Yes, truck drivers make money, but not that much.... not even half of what you quoted.

I will advise you go for number 1 on the list, which is IT....

Track some naija guys around, there are always different IT classes you can enroll in.... It won't cost you more than $3k-5k, and can take between 6 weeks to 12 weeks.... After the training, package your resume.... post on Indeed and Dice, and also package your Linkedln profile... that's all you need...

Meanwhile, find other jobs to do while taking the IT classes... cos you go need bar to take dey pay your bills and even pay for the class.... trust me, in about 6-8 months, you would be happy you did...

As for the others on the list (Medical Doctor and Nursing), those ones go still take you at least 4 years (Nursing), and at least 8-9 years for the Medical Doctor.... so the IT is your best choice for now...

Even the truck driving will still take you a while... cos you have to go through the driving school... and then you have to shadow someone, before you become a full driver..... If you decide to travel inter-state, there is money in it... but not even up to half of what was quoted here......

So use your sense.
Dshocker:

Have you gotten a job yet

If you want to make money in the United States;

1.......IT
2....... Truck driving
3....... Medical doctor
4....... Nursing

If you are serious, you can be making $30,000-$50,000 a month driving truck.

Per annum you make $360,000-$600,000
