I landed Nigeria yesterday from the US after 2years of Japing. Nothing seems to have gotten better, things have become very worse! How exactly do people live here in Nigeria? So many people begging you for money. Gosh, I can stay in this country for longer than 3 weeks. I can’t! I just cant!!!
The cab i took from the Airport to my apartment charged my 13k for a 35 mins drive It got me wondering how civil servants with families survive in this country considering how expensive things have become and salaries are constant.

So u sayin they depot u bak from America & u loookin for 13k to buy cloth..... corrrrrrrect?....did they depot u naaaaaaaked on the aeroplane & did u sit in econonmmy sir?(no offenscce) angry

😂 people in Europe/US catch public bus not because they are poor and can’t afford a car. They do that because of convenience, like lack of parking space and they do no want to drive long distance/ or not wanting to leave their car long enough at the airport.
There is no poverty in Europe and US. Anyone who is poor is by personal choice or illegal immigrant.
But Nigerians are subjected to poverty by fire by force by their leaders and it’s heart breaking.

Even homeless people (people whom drugs have destroyed) dress better than most normal people in Nigeria going on their daily business
gbam. I work in an homeless home and you are right.

So let's be clear here. Your grouse is that the cab you took from the airport to your apartment costs 13k for a 35 min drive. Let's all do the math together. 13k naira in USD is less than $18. So that means for a 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment, you paid less than $20 in Nigeria. Now let's compare that to the US. How much do you think you would have paid for UBER or LYFT for that same 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment?... Why do we just like to be condescending on our country. For a 35 minutes drive in Yankee, you would pay double, if not triple that amount. So what exactly is the point you are trying to make here for heaven's sake?

Stop the comparison. Enjoy your vacation in peace. Gas in Nigeria is currently less than a dollar for a liter. I'm pretty sure you are one of the ones that is criticizing the current subsidy removal. But back in the country you currently reside, a liter of gas is more expensive than what it is currently selling in Naija, and i bet you buy it happily, smiling sheepishly, but you are quick to condemn naija. You talk about the minimum wage of 30k. Do you think anyone really earn 30k monthly? or are you not aware that it is calculated by the level in the civil service...

Let's all try to calm down a little and use our senses. You take Uber from airport in naija for 13k, and you are here complaining about it. Meanwhile, that same 13k converted to USD won't even pay for a 35 minutes drive wherever you're coming from. Guy, abeg chill.

The Nigerian people writ large have made their country what it is. Anyone who seriously contemplates the character of the Nigerian will not be surprised at the state of the nation.

Nigerians PREFER policies that generate poverty and always VOTE for leaders that promise to implement such policies....mainly SOCIALIST policies that empower government and suppress individual freedoms to own property, price their products & services as they wish and do business with whomsoever they wish.

I write that with EVIDENCE. Back in Jan 2012 the government of the day abolished petrol subsidies. A solid majority of the Nigerian people opposed the withdrawal and suborned sustained labor strikes and rioting that paralyzed the nation. Not done with that, in the next elections of 2015 they voted for a political party that campaigned with a claim that fuel subsidies didn't even exist, so there was nothing to remove. It's really an amazing tale of ignorance because Nigeria has subsidized petrol since 1973! There are Nigerian Professors like Farook Kperogi (Journalism) and Moses Ebe Ochonu, (African History) teaching in American Universities, who claim there is nothing like fuel subsidy. It's just amazing, what else can I say.

It took about 10 years for the effects of retaining subsidies to manifest. Does anyone still think there was nothing like fuel subsidy? grin

The Nigerian people have evolved a SOCIALIST culture. So I can guarantee that the Nigeria of 2035 will be much worse than today. Socialism doesn't work, it creates poverty and violence. Nigerians DESERVE everything they're getting from their country. They voted for it.

Good Luck to Nigerians!

First, where are you based?

Have you lived in Europe or US, like lived their for years?

What you just said, is it from Google you browse am give me?

Again, did you read where I mentioned poverty is a choice, either by one overdosing on drugs and can’t live a normal life of working and paying bills or by being illegal immigrant?

Pay check to pay check doesn’t mean they are lacking.
Poverty is when one lacks the basic things of life. Pay check to paycheck means you work, paid your bills and have no savings.

Mind you, once’s you are working, you can get a car financing and pay as low as 100$ a month to own a car.
Mr man. I tell you again,
Poverty is by choice in Europe and US. Unless you are doing drugs and or illegal and can’t find a decent work because you don’t have a record.

Stop making a fool of yourself by pulling photos off the internet of homeless people who destroyed their lives with drugs and illegal immigrants who that live in shanties.

Poverty is by choice in US and Europe.
When I first moved to the US, I was changing jobs every month and was so picky that most people offered me jobs but I refused. 😂
This one dey mention trailer parks. Go there, and see if all of them no get cars, electricity, running water, cables, phone, internet, foods.
Not being poor doesn’t me you will be rich, at least you will afford basic necessities of life.
My work is home services industry and I dey go trailer parks all the time to do jobs, I know wetin I dey see there.
Nobody lives below 200 dollars a day in the US Mr Man
When you hear say there is no poverty in US or Europe, it doesn’t me everybody must be Elon Musk, it means, nobody lacks basic things here.
Foods, clothing, shelter, water, name it.

Let me shock you again, those drug destroyed homeless living in tents, govt have a provision for them to be fed, and rehabilitated, but them no gree live normal life sake of say drug don destroy them. They get pulled from the streets and put in shelter for homeless but they always ran away because they can’t live without drugs and don’t want to be rehabilitated.
100% valid on the homeless home. I work in one currently and some times I just get angry when I remember the government here is providing for them but in Nigeria even people who are very serious with life don't get such love from the government

A lot of state governments in Nigeria can't even pay the 30k minimum wage yet. People earn 15k in Nigeria and that's a majority pay. Schools even in Lagos pay teachers working full time less than 20k a month.

you talk like a proper African immigrant who just got off the boat... i guess in your world, because you landed in a big city and got a low paying job where you can wash dishes, flip burgers or clean floors for 10$ an hr, it means anywhere/everywhere in America there is abundance of work, lol! i guess the 40m Americans who are unemployed today and/or who can barely survive on their yeye low paying jobs, are lazy abi? the millions of GAINFULLY EMPLOYED PEOPLE who live in their car because they cant afford an apt/deposit etc are lazy abi? there is many people in the US who have a job yet live in their car, KAI!!!!

but hey, lets do the math: family of 4, you make $10+12/hr working 40hs per week in your low paying jobs, so thats roughly $2k monthly after taxes (and i am generous) $24k per yr income in the US...AND YOU WOULD BE CONSIDERED BOTTOM OF SOCIETY aka POOR, especially in expensive cities like NY, LA, San Fran, Boston etc....same in Europe like Paris or London!

...and just because some families can survive on such low income by renting apt/house 2hs away from your job, living in accomodation that looks like dog house while eating mac & cheese day and night, does NOT mean that you aint poor. same with yeye people who are taking loans to get a fancy house in a fancy neighborhood while driving a fancy car to pretend they aint poor, while living in bondage to these financial institutions (AKA REMAINING POOR FOREVER).

the below is rampant in the US....

Bro, let me tell you the truth. Over 90% of the western nations depend on heavy taxations to get things done. In Nigeria, we pay little to nothing, compared to these western countries. In the US, you pay tax on anything and everything.... now, not just that alone... you see most of these welfare programs, they are taken from working people's pay. In the US, you go pay federal, state, and county tax. E nor stop there ooo, you go still pay social security tax on every pay check. On a $2100 paycheck, if you're married filing jointly, the deduction from the $2100 paycheck is nothing less than $400... now if you're single, you'll pay nothing less than $520 on that same paycheck... now medical and some other small deductions never dey oooo... if you go store, even if nah $1 shit you buy, you must pay tax... you wan pay rent oo, you must pay tax.. all your bills (electricity, water, sewage, trash, etc), you go still pay tax on am. Even if you're selling your car, both buyers and sellers have to pay tax. Even on inheritance, you still have to pay tax. So that's how the government have enough money to sponsor most of these programs. Same thing can be replicated in Naija, but the truth is, the citizens nor go ever gree for government to take such drastic steps. I agree, our politicians are selfish and bad, but let's face the reality, the country is broke. Our revenue from Oil and non-oil can't afford to give Nigerians the good life we so desire, never.

Really? I personally know several young people that earn less than that in Nigeria....private school teacher in Owerri, sales clerk or sales girl in a super market in Shangisha neighborhood in Lagos. Both aged between 27 and 30.

And there's plenty of UNEMPLOYED youths depending on the charity of family and friends. Well, I guess the facts here depends on AGE. I can definitively tell you there's PLENTY of people aged 25 and under who earn less than 30K per month.

Good Luck to Nigerians.

I read your earlier assertions on the causes of poverty in the West being "voluntary". Largely true except in cases of physical or mental disease. I hope you can understand that? It's a big problem because the very fact of these countries being so advanced enables such unfortunate people to survive and slide into poverty.

Thanks...and have a good night.

A) fast food employees (like Mc Ds, starbucks etc) barely get any tips. if you knew anything about the US , you would know that fast food workers DONT GET TIPPED IN THE US. stop confusing restaurant waiters who are sometimes earning 3-4 times the minimum salary JUST ON TIPS and fast food workers who earn just their minimum salary. See dude, in the US, we understand. Some super rich than others, but nobody is below poverty line here. No place in the US you will go that you won’t see electricity, good drinking water and all amenities, unlike Nigeria. No hard working man in America is poor. Unless you are into drugs or illegal.
And I say it again, poverty is a choice in US and Europe, unlike Nigeria where people are willing to work but no job. There is nothing like no job in America

so because there is 24hs electricity and good drinking water in the US, people cant be poor?!?!?!? you think these poor people kiving from paycheck to paycheck aint hardworking?!?!?! what are you talking about?!

A) fast food employees (like Mc Ds, starbucks etc) barely get any tips. if you knew anything about the US , you would know that fast food workers DONT GET TIPPED IN THE US. stop confusing restaurant waiters who are something earning 3-4 times the minimum salary JUST ON TIPS and fast food workers who earn just their minimum salary. GET REAL!!!
B) you sir dont know what you are talking about....if you've never had a job in the US, you CANNOT receive unemployment benefit. same as if you get fired or quit your job (in some states)... GET REAL!!!
C) advertising for Jobs is one thing, but as there are hundreds of unemployed people who apply for that one job, saying that there is no poverty in the US is the LIE FROM THE PIT OF HELL! go to any job site in Nigeria and there will also be hundreds of jobs advertised...GET REAL!!!

The WHO definition of poverty is - someone living below $2 a day. Nobody lives below $2 a day in the US. Everybody must not have nice house or nice cars, but nobody will go hungry and without light and water and clothes in the US. Even shelter.
I eat at Qdoba, Chipotle, and many restaurants, whenever you want to pay, there is a tip attached to pay pad, which you can ignore. Any job that fast food job or restaurant that doesn’t attach tip, pays so well.
Nobody is hungry in America,
Besides, nobody pays 10 -12 dollars in a full time job in America, unless there is huge tips. Or the job is like do nothing almost.
I repeat agin, nobody lives below WHO definition of poverty which is living below $2 a day.
And no hard working person lacks basics necessities in America

Go read WHO definition of poverty. You will understand that nobody is poor in America.

You mistake poverty by comparison.
Mind you, if you think poverty is, when one drives a GMC truck and the other drives a 1995 Toyota. No it’s not.
Poverty is lacking the basic necessities of life like, food, clothing, shelter, good water and electricity.
Nobody lacks these in America.

the UNITED STATE CENSUS BUREAU says that there is 40m people living in POVERTY in the US, but i guess you are a better expert on the subject than them and therefore know something they dont.... abi?!?!

here enjoy:
https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/poverty-awareness-month.html#:~:text=Official%20Poverty%20Measure,37.9%20million%20people%20in%20poverty.

... but i understand your way of thinking. you just got to the US, see someone earning minimum 2K monthly, convert that in Naira in your head (aka 1.4M Nairas monthly), and thereafter mistakenly believe that everyone in the US is living comfortable lives.
Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by GreatKingg: 11:42pm On Jun 05, 2023
No, you are wrong. Over 10% of the US population lives below the poverty level. Guy, the poverty level for an individual for yankee nah $13,590. So, your story of nobody lives below the poverty level is completely false. Also, not all cities in the US have access to clean/good drinking water. How many people in the US do you think drink water directly from their tap? Most people depend on bottled water. There are quite a lot of hard-working people that are still poor. Let me ask you this question. What is your definition of hard-working man/woman? People that work 40 hours a week, do you consider them lazy or hard working? Or is it working 2 full time jobs that you consider hard-working? I asked you in my previous post, if you earn $7-$12/hour and work 40 hours weekly, how do you afford the basic necessities? How much is rent where you live? How much is electricity, gas, water, trash, medical insurance, car insurance, food, etc.? Now tell me, how do you afford all these from working 40 hours a week earning $12 or less an hour? Poverty is not a choice for everyone. I agree, there are quite a lot of people that are lazy, they don't want to do any work, just depend on food stamps and house voucher, but there are other majority out there hustling, and still not able to afford basic shits. Have you ever imagined a man with one or two kids earning $20/hour. How does he take care of his home with such pay? So will you now say such person is poor by choice? I believe you know how much childcare cost... even a single person earning $20 is poor... rent alone will take all your paycheck.... now don't tell me it depends on where they live. I'm not sure there's anywhere in the US right now where you will see a monthly rent below $500... you won't see that low even in the projects...

Sir you need to standardize your definition of poverty. The most contemporary measures of poverty include access to amenities such as clean water and stable energy supplies. The vast majority of poor people in the USA have access to such basic amenities of modern life. You have to incorporate some HDI standards.

What the people and government of the USA regard as "poverty" is a life of lower middle class comfort in Nigeria. The only people who are *un*avoidably poor in the USA are the physically or mentally ill. Do your research.

Cheers.
