Family / Re: To Whom Does The Child Belong To In Nigeria? The Father Or The Mother Or Both? by gregejige: 6:35pm On Jun 21, 2010
The odds are against you in Nigeria . . simply because he could hide the boy and you or the police would never know where he is.

And same as I'm sure your family will do, his family will do everything to prevent you from taking the boy away.

Goodluck with your councelling.

You mentioned your quarrels probably hurts the child in a psychological way - Imagine if you were miles apart.

We have condemned that ball since the tournament started.
The ball also robbed Spain of their deserved victory.

The same ball that Uruguay and Argentina used to score multiple goals . . .

Let's see if they will be able to manage the situation unlike our own spineless Eagles. But one thing I'm sure of: Germany cannot lose this match!

Romance / Re: At What Age Should A Guy Be Independent by gregejige: 2:09pm On Jun 14, 2010
Really depends,

Nigeria's case is different so we have to think about it - several strikes have made students turn 26yrs while in school and the fact that it aint easy to get jobs only makes things worse. So are you telling me I should start staying by myself when I have no means of income just to satisfy peer pressure?  I think not.  Even some who have jobs cannot afford to buy a television set.

Do not compare Nigeria with the western world pls.  I got into a Nigerian university at 17 and did not leave until I was 24 because of ASUU strikes . . I finished serving after I was 25 and did not start earning a decent salary until about a year later . . then you have to save some money so you wont start running back to your parents after 2 months of getting your own place.

Most people with parents outside of Lagos have no choise but to start staying alone earlier anyway, but when your parent have a house in Lagos, it is much tougher.

Here in america, you better start working when you are 18 (for your own good, no matter how small the pay is) - even most parent will chase you outta the house so you have no choice anyway!!

dayokanu:

Did Chinwetel even know about Fela before the auditioning?.

I'm sure he did.

I wonder how Ejiofor and Dbanj can be compared when it comes to acting - - they are a million miles apart.

Ejiofor is a world class actor (A plus rating) and can definately put on Fela's xracter. He does not need to know how to sing since there's this li'l thing called lip syncing. wink

All it would take him is studying Fela's world, and that wont be difficult since Fela was a global star and his life is all over the Web. I'm also sure his family will be willing to help.

Remember the sponsors of this movie are not making this movie for the Nigerian audience alone - they want it to be watched worldwide. Hence they need a trusted global super star that will pull crowds.

Politics / Re: Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by gregejige: 4:55pm On Jun 09, 2010
Some of the guys here are the type that will discourage you when you ask questions about moving back home - they are quick to discredit your foreign degree and confidence cos they think you might want to take their job. They are also the same ones who will try to cheer themselves up by making you feel your are 'suffering' abroad.

You chide poeple for staying abroad and minding their business and yet you do everything possible to frustrate them when they try to come home and look for jobs.

what do you really want??
Politics / Re: Are Nigerians Resident In Uk Jealous Of Their Visiting Counterparts ? by gregejige: 4:47pm On Jun 09, 2010
As long as we are constantly thinking of who is jealous of us and who we are jealous of, there is a big problem in Nigeria.

Who cares how much you have, what you drive and where you shop . . if you cannot make the lives of others around you better??

So they are jealous of you because they have to work and are not at your beck n call like your maids back home??

It is all poverty mentality.

Some people deliberately keep others down so they can be worshiped.

Sad.

As long as I aint begging you for money and I aint stealing, it aint your business if I work at mc donalds or I clean the gutter.

i'm not of the belief that a player makes a team. infact, the player's absence can be a platform for a promising player that has been overlooked before.

True. But still sad when players you expect great things from are breaking down before the main event.

Portugal winger Nani has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering an injury to his collar bone.

Manchester United's Nani picked up the injury in training on Friday in Lisbon before flying to South Africa.

"After tests we conclude he is unfit to participate in the World Cup," said a team statement. ,

The best university in Nigeria is around 8000 in the world, maybe its political, but i know the edcuation is crab and some of does profs that frustate you in Nigeria are not known in the world except few.I was in Nigeria recently and a young boy told me he studies computer sceince,i was just laughing, because is irritating to hear that word after a longtime, how can be be jack of all trade and you will still not know anything.I had to expaln to the boy about networking, information systems managment,Business Information technology, software technology, embeeded, computer enginerring, media eng, which one are you,no ans,i tire

I wonder what was funny to you. Yes, people do get first degrees in computer science then maybe later on go on to specialize . . so there was nothing wrong with what the boy said.

Now you have suceeded in making the boy feel he can never be of any good just because he is still in Nigeria and you are a been to . . that is not nice. No wonder some people still have issues with those coming from abroad - people like you still run down others who ahave not been fortunate enough to leave the country.

How nice it would have been of you to encourage the boy and then educate him . . instead of laughing at him.

Politics / James Ibori’s Sister, Mistress, Get Five Years In Prison! by gregejige: 7:36pm On Jun 07, 2010
Christine Ibie-Ibori and Udoamakaa Okoronkwo-Onuigbo, sister and mistress of James Ibori, were this morning in London bundled into jail for five years each for their roles in the former governor’s massive corruption activities in the United Kingdom. The sentencing followed the guilty verdicts handed down by a jury last week at the Southwark Crown Court in London after the two women were found guilty of money laundering and mortgage fraud. A third accused person, Bimpe Pogoson, who was Ibori’s Personal Assistant, was discharged and acquitted by the jury. Ibori's sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori, was found guilty of 9 counts of money laundering and mortgage fraud. Okoronkwo-Onuigbo got her five years in prison for money laundering. The two women were accused and subsequently convicted of handling proceeds of criminal transactions on behalf of Ibori while he was governor of Delta State.

Nigerians in the UK turned out en masse in court today leading the court to move three times in order to create space for over 150 Nigerians that attended the sentencing today, but a large chunk of the attendees that had responded to the call of the Nigeria Liberty Forum to come to the event could not find a seat in the court room.

When Judge Christopher Hardy eventually began the sentencing hearing, the lawyers to the women pleaded with him to temper justice with mercy, claiming that the two women had been extensively manipulated by Ibori to commit the offences on his behalf. For the first time in court, the defense lawyers conceded that Ibori was a criminal with powerful influence. They alluded to his pervasive influence over the entire Nigerian government structure to buttress their point that the two women were too insignificant to have rejected his overtures.

However, the judge rejected their pleas. In doing so, Judge Hardy took the unprecedented step of coming down hard on the Nigerian judiciary, declaring that the Nigerian judiciary has been usurped by Ibori. He said it is the people of Nigeria that are the victims, not the two women who lived a life of luxury off the poverty of their people. He made it clear in open court that the women knew exactly what they were doing and therefore couldn't be described as victims.

Late last year, Judge Marcel Awokulehin of the Federal High Court in Asaba set the thieving former governor free after throwing out the 170 charges of corruption that had been brought against him, proving that justice was available to be bought in the Nigerian judiciary. Ibori swaggered into the Edo State capital in triumph to give a Founder’s Day lecture at the University of Benin, an institution the reputation of which was severely damaged in academic circles.

In the UK, Ibori did not find a price tag on justice. The two women were taken to prison as soon as the sentencing ended while Nigerians in attendance jubilated outside the court room or headed to local pubs to celebrate.

Meanwhile, he is still in Dubai awaiting possible extradition to the United Kingdom.

^^^^ Well it all boils down the the system, govt and the power situation in some ways.

Most companies are running from Nigeria simply because of erratic power supply and I dont blame them.

What is an electrical / mechanical engineer without electricy or the freedom to generate it? nothing! . . so who's goin to hire them??

What is the govt doing about power ? . . .  all talk and nothing.

If you cant handle it. privatise the damn thing or let the states who can generate their own do it!
Career / Re: Why Do Nigerians Spend So Much Time In School? by gregejige: 4:22pm On Jun 07, 2010
I cannot count the number of friends / classmates I had back then who really really wanted to be electrical / mechanical engineers and they had first class degrees in such fields in college.

But guess what, no one would hire them and these guys are now bank employees!!

Talk about the real brain drain - folks who should be helping our country's engines run smoothly are instead bank tellers counting money. angry

_____

My uncle was hired by a south African nation to help fix their countries electricity system. He has since finished the project and the country has electricity 24 hours of the day. This uncle of mine is back in Nigeria lecturing at one of the universities - no govt official has deemed it fit to tap his brain.

PrinceKevo,
I guess you do not need to crucify Pa-Ken, I believe what he said can be put to practice in Nigeria, having worked abroad and appreciate employers not keen about my certificates but my ability to deliver, meets and exceed targets, it changed my orientation about the rationale behind worshiping certificates in Nigeria, I took up a short term role  as a technical Project Manager with a company on a 3G Optimization project  of one of the Mobile Operator's in Nigeria prior to its commercial launch late 2008.

I had to recruit the guys to be on my team, tons of CV had been received and on my selection criteria, experience far outweighs whatever certificates you have, at the end of the day I ended up not asking any of the successful guys to show me if they had a degree or not,  one of the top performers happens to be a Youth Corp member who had some experience and could deliver better than guys some guys with loads of certificates.

We really need to look inward and encourage ourselves to turn Nigeria to a better place to live, BTW while I was leaving after three months, the same was asked to act as the Project Manager and he is doing just great now, attended some PM oriented training and he's continued to be a top performer with more responsibilities.

So how do you gather the experience if no one's willing to give you the opportunity (like you did some people) even WHEN you offer to be a non-paid volunteer??

Hence the reason why most people in Nigeria accumulate degrees . .

The problem is our system:

- FIX the damn Power system and you will see how many robbers / okada drivers will be off the streets.

- Encourage and support technical education.

I remember some going to the under bridge at oshodi several years ago - these young igbo boys had their own radio station!! with a decent transmitter designed by them from scratch and several receivers all around the electronics market. Some of them were also builing actuators used in cable antennae.

Why cant we support, encourage and develop these kinds of people??

Instead we run them down and go buy from china
Career / Re: Why Do Nigerians Spend So Much Time In School? by gregejige: 2:07pm On Jun 07, 2010
what do you expect people to do when they get their first degree and still no job . . and every vacancy says at least masters even when it is a cleaning job?

. . and before you say they should start their own business, who will give them the line of credit . . . and how do you start your own business when you spent 24 hours of ur time in school, not like in the west where you can work while goin to school??

. . as long as you are looked down upon if you do not have a university degree, things will beging to look this way.

Technical colleges need to be revived and employees must be encouraged to be hiring from these schools.

But of course our power issues need to be sorted out first of all or we are just wasting our time.
