It is a market for potential. Everyone's taking a bet on the next available big thing. Delap is a solid acquisition.

Delap is a proper 9. Picks the ball from the half way line, bulldozing the defenders to gain yardage, links up with his teammates and positions himself very well to strike.

I can imagine how difficult it must have been for him playing with the likes of Hutchinson et al. It was quite a poor supporting cast.

I have no doubt he’ll do well here.

Exactly this! For all of Jackson’s shortcomings, I still wouldn’t let him go—especially considering the fee we paid for him and the fact that he hasn’t been completely underwhelming. If we can keep him as a third striking option or someone who can play from the wing and link up with the No. 9—like we had with Drogba, Anelka, and Kalou—I don’t see any reason to let him go.

If we sign Delap and another striker, Jackson might occasionally have to fill in as a left winger or supporting forward—roles he’s taken on earlier in his career. It’s something Maresca hasn’t really had the chance to try yet. But with Sancho hopefully returning to Manchester, and both Neto and Madueke failing to impress, using Jackson out wide might not be such a bad shout—especially if we can’t secure a good left winger.

Most of these chap’s clips I saw prior to him signing for us, were actions from the LW and he was never this bad.

His linkup play is superb. I see no reason he shouldn’t excel playing out wide.

He can make that LW his as that’s his best position. Then when we have Jackson or Delap not playing, the Brazilian can still be shoehorned into the CF position. He’s that good.

For all his profligacy, I still think we need to keep Jackson around. His press game will count against certain teams.

It’s important to have players with different distinct profiles in a team.

My ideal attacking options for next season would look pretty much like this:

RW: Palmer, Estevao, Neto
LW: Rodrigo, Sancho, Madueke.
CF, Gyokeres (Delap), Jackson, Guiu

On a serious note, where I think we’ve got a bigger problem is the LW. Palmer and Estevao can hold down that RW position for years, with Neto happily being a squad player.

Sancho with his heavy wages needs to leave. That leaves us with just the ineffective Noni and the ousted Mudryk for the LW position and there the problem lies.

I expect a busy market as we may need to move some fringe or overpaid players this summer. That should see us balance the books and most probably make a big money move for Lws like Leao or Nico Williams. I heard Rodrigo is shortlisted for sale, we don’t have to sleep on that deal either.

If worse comes to worst we can tempt Newcastle with a deal for Gordon, even though I’m a big fan of Ademola Lookman.

Cucurella under Pochettino was a disaster to watch. He had no confidence to dispatch Chilwell and wasn’t an actual left-back like Maatsen and Hall. Almost everyone here wanted Lewis to stay as he was seen as the future of that no3 position, however, his sale was sanctioned by the club for profit reasons.

The only reason Cucu wasn’t shipped during that time was because it could have gone down as an accounting loss because no one was gonna pay £50-60meters for him.

I rightly questioned the sale of Lewis Hall because at the time, he has shown that he was a hot prospect and Cucurella was yet to convince anyone, despite the hefty price tag. This was primarily what it was all about and had little to do with anything else.
