If you knew how many big businesses in Nigeria whose domain names I could have registered you will be amazed. Many businesses in Nigeria came late to the game, many had zero online presence.
These businesses are still operating till today and they are not in jeopardy as you proclaimed.
Yes, if you are starting a new business today, the wise thing to do is to search if the domain name for your new business is still available or not.
At the same time, the notion that your new business is going to be in jeopardy because of a domain name is ridiculous. It is better not to start it at all if that is the case.

If NigeriaAir.com was registered in 2004, long before this airline was conceived then Nigeria will have to buy or negotiate with the current owner in order to use the domain. But for the Yahoo Yahoo guy who was dreaming up getting 48million naira, I wish him goodluck.
