Celebrities / Peter Okodua Is Dead by Hadeyur(f): 7:46am On Dec 06, 2013
He died from complications due to stroke.
A broadcast journalist with the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, Peter Okodua, died on Thursday at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta after a prolonged battle with stroke.
Mr. Okodua was 58 years old.
The deceased is believed to have first suffered from stroke when three of his children drowned in the Ogun River about twelve years ago. He has since been in and out of hospital for the illness.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that he had another round of attack on Tuesday and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre where he died.
Mr. Okodua’s demise was received with shock by his professional colleagues.
He was a former Vice-Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, between 1998-1990, as well as a former Secretary, 1993-1995. He was also a former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN.
A statement of condolence by the Chairman, Ogun NUJ, Wole Shokunbi, and Secretary, Soji Amosu, said the council received the news with shock and described Mr. Okodua’s death as a great loss to the media world.
The statement noted that Mr. Okodua was a very hardworking journalist who, for decades, became a household name in journalism practice.
While condoling with the management and staff of Ogun Radio, the union prayed to God to grant the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the loss
The Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, expressed shock at the news.  He said he was saddened by the exit of the veteran journalist, especially coming at a time when his wealth of experience was mostly needed in the media industry.
“Peter Okodua was a thoroughbred professional, revered media practitioner and cerebral presenter, who popularised Newspaper Review on OGBC in the 90s and anchored the popular current affairs programme, Sunday Morning Live, for over two decades on the same station. He has certainly left his footprints on the sands of time,” Mr. Amosun said.
The governor commiserated with the family of the deceased, management and staff of Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation, the people of Ogun State, and Edo State, where the late sports journalist hailed from.
He prayed to God to grant Mr. Okodua’s soul eternal rest and give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
