Service (NIS), Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma

Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Rose Chinyere Uzoma, yesterday absolved foreigners of involvement in Boko Haram attacks in the country.

It is widely believed, even within the intelligence community, that the militant sect employs the bulk of its members from neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

The NIS had carried out raids in some northern cities and arrested aliens that might be linked to the current insurgency in the region.

In one of such raids in Kano last January, more than 250 aliens were arrested.

But speaking yesterday when she appeared before the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (downstream) at its ongoing investigation into illegal oil bunkering in the country, Uzoma said there was no official confirmation on the participation of foreigners in Boko Haram’s activities.

She said: “I am not aware, as of today, of any case of foreigner entering this country through the sea ports that has been proved to have been engaged in Boko Haram activities.

“Let me use this opportunity, please, to say this fact: it has become commonplace that whenever there is an attack, it is usually assumed that the people involved are foreigners.”

According to her, “The Nigerian Immigration Service is the only security agency statutorily empowered to make public pronouncements on personality of persons.

“When people see dead bodies on the ground, they say they are illegal immigrants; any attack is attributed to illegal immigrants. I would like to inform you that we have come across on a very few cases of involvement of nationals of neighboring countries in these incidents.

“There was a case of a report of 68 Chadians that were arrested, who were supposedly involved in the bomb attack in Kano, and I had to send my officers to interview the supposed Chadians. It turned out that there was no single Chadian amongst them. Rather, we came across one Malian and a Ghanaian. Those two ECOWAS nationals did not have anything whatsoever to do with the bomb attack.

“Rather, they arrested them along with others at the premises of a bank when armed robbery took place. So, they were unlucky to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The CG added: “Though they might not have been with valid travelling documents at that time, but at the time of pronouncement they were not involved in the attack. But I would rather advise (that) it is safer to say ‘illegal immigrants’.

“Of course, we do have illegal immigrants in Nigeria, which we are all aware of, just as we, Nigerians, have lots of illegal immigrants elsewhere.

“Before this time, Nigeria has always trod a path of caution because of possible repercussion of mass repatriation of Nigerians in similar conditions in these other countries”.

Uzoma, however, disclosed that the NIS would not take anything for granted, saying, “Right now, we are doing our best to rid our country of those people in such immigration situations”.

Nigeria has repatriated tens of thousands of foreigners mainly from Niger and Chad over the past one year to curb the growing Boko Haram insurgency.

“The latest number of foreigners repatriated as at this morning is 11,000,” the NIS spokesman, Joachim Olumba, told AFP last February, adding, “The bulk of them are from Niger and Chad.”

Olumba said the repatriation “has been intensified in the past six months following the Boko Haram insurgency,” adding: “We have an obligation to rid the country of undesirable elements.”

Speaking on the NIS raid in Kano in January, the Comptroller of the NIS, Kano State Command, Dr. Brasca Ifeadi, said the operation was on the orders of the NIS Comptroller-General in response to the security threat posed by Boko Haram to the country.

He added, “All criminal and terrorist-infested areas and hideouts within and outside Kano metropolis will be raided.”

He said the raids were also carried out to prevent the aliens from becoming willing tools of destabilisation of peace and security in the country, describing the operation as the NIS’ contribution to the enhancement of national security.

Ifeadi said, “This exercise, which is a continuous one, is one of the Nigeria Immigration Service’s ways of contributing to the enhancement of our national security as all those found wanting would be repatriated immediately.”

Finland: The crimes that would be committed by these people would not be the same crime an average Nigerian would commit. These people could be lured easily by bokoharam and use them for mass destruction. They could take advantage of their poverty and use them easily for suicide bombings.
please can you give me one instance that a foreigner was caught in book haram or even other militancy, to, be honest we Nigerians are the crooks that our neigbojr should be afraid of, I believe anybody that goes to any of our neigboring contries can testify to this. We like shifting the blame instead of facing it

On the contrary Nigeriens should be afraid of Nigerians , have you ever heard of any serious break of law and order in Niger ' let me tell you if you go to Niamey they are more orderly and have better decorum than us in fact they are always scared of Nigerians with our funny ways. For goodness sake. Niger is a contry of 15 million people, inoder to cover our inefgiceincies we always blame our neighboring countries for crimes in naija like recently there was a a cry that the book haram members are from Niger when over 100 were arrested and quized by NIS non is a foreigner

Jamesqu: Oh, how I long for the days of Atlanta 96...up until Chioma's gold everything was looking bleak, but immediately she won...everyone was like I must get me a medal too o...and the harvest started, Falilat, Onyali etc.

But I'm a bit pessimistic about London. While Blessing is having a good year her events are highly technical. You will recall that she only got the Bronze (Long Jump) in Beijing due to one of the finalist failing a dope test and opened the door for her to try her luck. She must learn from Ajunwa, the first jump is the ultimate....she must produce a 7.00 at least in the first round where she has only three attempts. Then in the final, she must do at least a 7.10 to medal from her first jump...I wish her the best.

She beat the Jamaicans in Monaco (10.96) in the 100m just last week, so she is in form...I expect her to get to the final but must match Alozie's AR of 10.90 to medal...If she can't do a sub 10.00 in the final, there's no hope for her....the Jamaicans and Americans are doing this esily, remember 10.96 is even her PB.

Ajoke Odumosu (CommonWealth Champ) too is a hope...I doubt she has doen a sun 50 yet and that is what will be required for a medal....Falilat didi an AR of 49.10 to win just Bronze and Cathy Freeman did a 47s for the gold so she knows what is expected of her. But games differ and some 400mW have been won with less time with the quality of the field largely determinant. Nice one think you are objective but whar of table tennis any hope?

I have absolutely no hope in the realys. The field is tough and we don't have any of our top 4 athletes being consistent. At barcelona 92 we had 2 men each in the 100mM and 200mM final so our Silver in the 4x100m was expected. These were guys doing sub 10s. Utondu, Opara-Thompson, Idehen and Onyali too were a superb team and only got Bronze...except one of the favs mess-up...I dont have any hope here. The 400m is even worse..the women may nibble the final but the men....

Vivian threw (Short Put) an AR (I believe) of 18.96 in Benin recently, she may make the final but then its anybody's...she is an experienced and seasoned athlete so she MUST make the final after all these years. I believe that is also in the top 15 best throws of the year or something like that.

Chukwumerije MUST medal too in the taekwondo. Had a ridiculous Bronze instead of gold at Beijing (injury, I think) and struggled to qualify. In form now so I am expectant. In think this is my biggest hope anyway.

Our boxing has completely collapsed. I think we have only 2 or so boxers at the games, appaulling! Weight-lifting...smh.

Except our Basketballers can draw inspiration from Kanu et al, it will be tough. Quite commendable they beat Dominican and shockingly Greece to qualify but....their group is fire. If they fail to beat Tunisia on Sunday then they might as well leave. beating Tunisia and a bit of luck will see them to the quarter-final. they need to come 4th in a 6 team group. If they beat Tunisia, manage a result against France (beans)....then Lithuania, USA....it wont be easy but ask Bebeto and Argentina how Kanu and co dealt with them.

In Summary, best case Chukwumerije Gold, Blessing Silver (LJ) Bronze (100mW), Ajoke Bronze (400mW) and Bronze (4x400mW)....anything short of this would be a disaster.....I can't wait. I love the Olympics.

The berom and Fulani have been staying side by side for ages, when religious crisis started in 2001, the berom also killed Fulani even though the crises was mainly between them and hausas in jos city, that was the mistake the berom made, fulanis are warriors and always on the moves and they hardly forget or forgive.
