CrimeTwo Nigerian Caregivers Charged For Neglecting Autistic Woman In The UK by hakeem4(op): 9:02am On Sep 13, 2017
Two Nigerian women have pleaded guilty to charges of neglect for leaving a severely autistic woman locked in a car alone while they went on a two-and-a-half hour shopping spree.

Sylvia Ezeorji, 47 and Veronica Howe, 52, were both care support workers for 58-year-old Claire McMullen, who suffers from autism, learning difficulties and does not speak.

According to Kent Online, McMullen was found by police locked in a car in Chatham High Street, U.K on a hot day in July after concerned members of the public called emergency workers when they saw the vehicle rocking.

The woman was wearing a big coat and sweating. Beside her was a packet of Wotsits and a bottle of water the carers had left for her, but she was not even capable of opening the items.

Howe, of Castle Road, Chatham, and Ezeorji, of Porters Avenue, Dagenham, have pleaded guilty to neglect.

They were told by the court their actions showed “total disregard for a person’s life”.

McMullen is deemed a very vulnerable adult, the court heard. She needs two-to-one care 24 hours a day as she is in danger of choking on food so she must be supervised at all times.

Police officers had to smash a window to free McMullen because they were so concerned about her welfare.

She was immediately given water and drank it thirstily before being taken to hospital by ambulance to be checked over.

Ezeorji and Howe returned to the vehicle at about 4pm, two-and-a-half hours after they had abandoned her inside.

Police were still on the scene and arrested the pair on suspicion of neglect.

Both were later charged and pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates’ Court.

They returned to the same court for sentencing.

The court heard a statement from the manager of McMullen’s care home in Crawley, who said the support workers had told him they were going shopping with her in town.

He had thought that meant they were going to Crawley or nearby, as taking a resident out of the borough would need to be authorised beforehand.

The statement also said the pair knew her care-plan and had helped draw it up, so leaving her in the car showed a total disregard for the plan.

Nicholas also told magistrates that police saw McMullen repeatedly rocking herself in the car, which had tinted windows. The weather had been overcast, but very humid with the temperature around 20C.

The court was told the pair had admitted their actions fell below what is required of them and said they did go to check on her in the car, but left her there again and just forgot about the time.

Magistrates decided their sentencing powers were insufficient and sent the case to Maidstone Crown Court where the duo is still expecting their sentencing.

NO FRACAS BETWEEN NUJ ABIA STATE AND SOLDIERS ON PATROL IN UMUAHIA

The attention of 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, has been drawn to social media publications alleging that troops on patrol in Umuahia town have invaded the NUJ Press Centre in Umuahia at about 10.00am today.

While it was true there was an issue between some soldiers on routine patrol, the magnitude is not as was reported. What happened was that while the soldiers on patrol near the Abia State NUJ Secretariat, they noticed some people filming them. Unfortunately, they seized and damaged their recording devices; an iPad and 2 mobile phones. Preliminary investigation shows that the items belongs to journalists on their legitimate duties. Consequently, the Commander 14 Brigade and Deputy Director Army Public Relations 82 Division waded into the matter which has since been resolved amicably.

In addition, the soldiers involved will face disciplinary action.

The public are please requested to eschew rumour mongering and go about their lawful business.

Govt MUST take the blame since they didn't create foundation for entrepreneurship and development.

The Main problem is lack of Proper justice system and Education. When that is tackled the rest are minor issues
yeah I said the government are not trying when it comes to their duties ?

Enough of Universities in this country. A friend of mine who is a season Scholar recently told me that establishment of universities by churches in Nigeria is a way of creating employment. This he said to make me reason along with his support of this "ungodly" focus of our modern churches. I have always and I will continue to go against church establishing university. A narrow minded man will quickly agree that this social group - churhes are helping in creating job but I say capital No to this. Churches are only and will end up increasing the rate of unemployment by doing this. Someone may like to ask me how. Let us assume a new establish university absorb 1500 workers, academic and non academic staff inclusive. Yes, this is very good !!!! But at the long run, such school will end up producing graduates that will be rooming around looking for job. This will be done every year !!! After collecting tithes and offerings, churches establish schools that will not be affordable for there members even the less privileged. If indeed, any church wanna help us out of unemployment in this country, then I will suggest that it is better to establish companies, factories, plants. These have the tendency of creating employment permanently without any long run side effect. Universities is like secondary schools. You see them in every streets, villages, town, cities producing fruits that are half baked. The few tertiary institutions we have should be upgraded .......

KillerBeauty:
In developed countries they hold their government accountable for everything.
For job, housing, good road, education, health care etcetera

But the reverse is the case in Nigeria. We claim the government owes us nothing yet we pay tax, pay lightbill but no light, fix our road our selves n pay school fees for our kids.

Is that the way it's supposed to be? We cross our arms doing nothing while our politicians rob us of our right, steal our money, take the little we have as tax, run our economy into recession and yet we happily say they owe us nothing.

My dear they owe us everything. In Germany their government pay people who don't work but in Nigeria people who work are owed for months.
Yes ma I agree with your point, but we're still a developing nation.

First of all the government has just few roles in the provision of jobs
2ndly every nation passes through recession, it's part of the economy cycle
3rdly Germany is a country with good data base and little population, so the government of Germany can get the total number of people in the state and get their needs for us

We shouldn't compare ourselves with Europeans, we should still compare ourselves with developing nations like India

Just So You Know, The government does not Owe You Any job

By Hakeem4

There you go, whiners. Read it slowly and let it sink in. No one owes you anything. I started reading an entrepreneurship book my father gave me titled " ENTREPRENEURSHIP & START UP BUSINESS :- start up , growth & maturity" written by Paul Burns. The fundamental message this book is passing is how to start up a new business, growth stage, maturity and what to do when you fail. I read a place where the author said more than 70% of the employments in the UK are created by SME

Who are you blaming?

I lived in a society where everyone blames the government, the rich and everyone around them. While In school we were taught that once you have good grades in school there's automatic employment waiting for you. YES, it was true, in the 50's and 60's when there were few graduates.

way out

when I got to the university I studied civil engineering. My mom wanted me to work as a civil servant cause of "job security". When I got to 300L my father started telling me the reality of life that as a civil engineer to get a contract or a consulting job you need connections, even if you're the most brilliant engineer. So I felt bad and started thinking no one will be responsible for me when I graduate not my parents or the government. So I started reading books like

and I read about most of the world successful people in the world and one thing was that they started early and never depended on their governments. So I started thinking of a way to survive when i graduate so I thought of making blocks and interlocking stones.

your life your responsibility

“You are responsible for your life. If you’re sitting around waiting on somebody to save you, to fix you, to even help you, you are wasting your time. Only you have the power to move your life forward.” - Oprah Winfrey

So when I read news on how there're no job and youth would be insulting the government I just laugh.

Responsibilities Of A Government In An Economy

Governments are appointed by citizens to manage the affairs of their country. Their responsibilities include:

-Ensuring the security of a state- Government must maintain law and order internally. This is realized through legislation, the court of justice and the police force. Externally the armed forces protect citizens against external threats.

-Protection and general welfare of citizens   - Government is responsible for the general health and education of citizens. Welfare programmes must be provided for those who are very poor and vulnerable.

-Management of the economy – Governments are appointed by citizens to efficiently manage the economy to bring about growth and development. This includes: encouraging local and foreign investment, controlling inflation, maintaining the foreign reserve (NIR), curbing balance of payments deficits and achieving high levels of employment.

-Protecting the environment – Sustaining the environment is important to the well-being of citizens. Ways of protecting the environment include: legislation to prevent further degradation, zoning to protect wildlife areas from disruption by development of factories, shopping and residential areas and taxation to reduce the level of pollution by firms. http://wizznotes.com/pob/role-fo-government-in-an-economy/responsibilities-of-a-government-in-an-economy

Even this present APC led government really tried in the aspect of job creation with their N-power scheme.

Are you still blaming the government?

But government should at least give industries minimum of 8hours electricity per day and good roads, that's all we want
