Clefayomide:There we go again..Hyping so-call graduates unnecessarily..What has having self esteem got to do with being a graduate?A lot of people who are not graduates nor smell the four walls of a tertiary institution have self esteem and you cannot talk to them anyhow....I am sure you will be among those who look down on artisans, taxi drivers, roadside sellers or people who do not seem to be on the same level with you.. Two companies, linked with All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Mr. Bola Tinubu, and Mr. Lasisi Olalekan, Special Adviser on Taxation to Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, governor of Lagos State, SaharaReporters can reveal, were approved by law to collect the contentious Land Use Charge in Lagos State. They are expected to handle the collection along with Alpha Beta, another company with links to Mr. Tinubu. The 400 percent hike in the Land Use Charge, following an amendment of the law backing it, has provoked strident disapproval by the public. The disapproval became more intense after it was discovered that Alpha Beta, in which Mr. Tinubu is a major shareholder or the owner, was inserted as a collecting agent. SaharaReporters investigations revealed that the two other collecting companies are Information Connectivity Solutions Limited (ICSL) and De Soffit Consults Limited. ICSL, SaharaReporters discovered, is a sister organization to Mr. Tinubu's Alpha. SaharaReporters searches at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) showed that ICSL has two directors, Messrs. Abiodun Akinkunmi and Lanre Bankole. Mr. Akinkunmi, a former Lagos State Finance Commissioner, was on the board of Alpha Beta while serving as commissioner, a contravention of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. The country's Public Service Code bars public office holders from working in private organizations. The code equally bars public officials from putting themselves in positions where personal interest could conflict with their duties and responsibilities. Upon registration, SaharaReporters gathered, the shareholders of ICSL were Alpha Beta Consulting Limited with 4,999,999 shares and Mr. Tunde Badejo, who had just one share. To deflect suspicion, Alpha Beta transferred its shares to Connectivity Investment Holding Company (CIHC) and the Document of Transfer was filed at CAC on 13 July 2017. CIHC further transferred all its shares to ICSL on 28 July 2015. The second company, De Soffit Consults Limited, with registration number RC 932446, has as one of its directors, Mr. Lasisi Olalekan, Special Adviser on Taxation and Revenue Matters to Mr. Ambode. According to documents from the CAC, Olalekan owns 40 percent equity in the company, while one Mr. Ogunlana Femi owns 30 percent. The remaining 30 percent is owned by one Mr. Lawal Olanrewaju. The Lagos State governor appointed Mr. Olalekan was appointed Special Adviser while holding the position of Managing Director of De Soffit Consults Limited. Since assuming office as Special Adviser and up till date Mr. Olalekan functions as a director in De Soffit in contravention of the Public Service Code. With his appointment of staff of privately owned companies, who refuse to relinquish their previous jobs, Mr. Ambode appears to consider Code of Conduct for Public Officers. http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/30/two-companies-linked-tinubu-ambode%E2%80%99s-aide-collect-land-use-charge-lagos-state Lalasticlala |

US President Donald Trump decided Tuesday to end the protected status of thousands of Liberian migrants to the United States and gave them a year to leave the country. It’s the latest of similar moves, after more than 250,000 Salvadorans, Haitians and Nicaraguans lost their protected status under an administration which has made cracking down on immigration a priority. In 1991, when the West African country was in the grip of civil war, some Liberians living in the US were given “temporary protected status” to allow them to remain in safety. Then in 1999 approximately 10,000 of them were made eligible for “deferred enforced departure,” or DED, by then-president Bill Clinton, allowing them to continue to build new lives. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have periodically renewed the DED status, but Trump has now decided to allow it to expire, deeming Liberia safe for returnees. Trump has taken a tough stance on immigration in general and, in reported private conversations, an even tougher stance on Africans from what he has reportedly deemed “shithole countries.” The latest grace period expires on March 31, but Trump said in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security that he would accord the Liberians a 12-month “wind-down” period to prepare their departure. “Through consultation with appropriate executive departments and agencies and my advisors, I have been informed that conditions in Liberia have improved,” Trump wrote. “Liberia is no longer experiencing armed conflict and has made significant progress in restoring stability and democratic governance,” he argued. Trump admitted that the 2014 outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa had brought “tragic loss of life and economic damage” to Liberia, one of the world’s poorest countries after years of civil war. But he declared himself satisfied with Liberia’s progress in tackling the disease. It is not clear how many of the original 10,000 DED recipients may have died, moved on voluntarily or been granted another form of legal US residency — but the rest face an uncertain future. Opponents of Trump’s move warned it would uproot many who had made new and productive lives for themselves in the United States. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, noted on Twitter that, thanks to the previous presidents’ DED extensions, the Liberians had been living in the United States legally since 1992. “Many work in Minnesota hospitals and nursing homes,” she wrote. “I won’t give up this fight. We have a year.” http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/28/trump-gives-liberians-one-year-leave-us

American billionaire and businessman, Bill Gates, has said that his criticism of the Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery & Growth Plan was to stir leaders to wake up to their responsibility and focus on human capital development. Mr. Gates said Nigeria needs to act to save the country’s large youth population. During his visit to Nigeria, the co-chair of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation addressed an expanded National Economic Council meeting in Abuja where he criticised the government for “prioritizing physical capital over human capital” in its economic development plans. Present at the meeting was Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, and ministers. Mr. Gates’ comments attracted a huge debate among Nigerians across all political divides, with many backing his call. The federal government claimed Mr. Gates’ remarks were misunderstood by the media and tried to counter the message by highlighting its effort to develop human capital. But, in an interview with the CNN on Tuesday, Mr. Gates said his intention in criticizing the country was not to be impolite but to point out to Nigerian politicians the need to focus more on human capital development to save the horde of Nigerian youth population facing poverty and other social malaise. “While it may be easier to be polite, it’s more important to face facts so that you can make progress,” Mr. Gates said. Mr. Gates said he was “very direct” in his criticism of the federal government to stress the need for more to be done to raise the level of its investment in education and health. “The current quality and quantity of investment in this young generation in health and education just aren’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN. In his Abuja speech, Mr. Gates faulted the decision to anchor the country’s long-term economic growth on investments in infrastructure, pointing out that investments in people must go hand in hand. “People without roads ports and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports, and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy,” he argued. http://saharareporters.com/2018/03/27/why-i-was-very-direct-criticizing-nigerian-govt-bill-gates Lalasticlala |
