asha80: now is is strategic thinking..if far east international flights starts in asaba airport it would affect the AIIA because those biz men from oinitsha, nnewi and asaba triangle would rather use asaba simply because of distance....enugu state and ebonyi really need heavy fdis and local biz men investing in thetwo states....even if abia finally get a governor with a brain and turns aba and its envrirons to what it is supposed to be,biz men in this area would still prefer ph international airport to enugu simply because of distanxce.
Very difficult for international flights from Asaba - runway is too short. If Anambra builds an airport at Umueri side, Asaba will lose a lot of business.

Asaba has hilly topography while Aguleri/Umuleri is flat - only thing needed is a governor with foresight in Anambra.

OdenigboAroli: Do that and they will say you hate Enugu people. The reason why Enugu Internally Generated Revenue hasn't seen any increase is because the governor has no vission. Chime is clueless, lets face it. Anybody can do what he is doing in Enugu. Whats there? Collect allocation, pay workers, use the rest to reconstruct and beautify Enugu city and maybe every now and then go to one village a build a single substandard road..lol
Chime's ineptitude has no comparison. And it infuriates me when people put his name down as one of the best performing governors. Some people love to live in denial.
If care is not taken Enugu will become an abandoned city...If what Obiano is trying to do succeeds. Enugu people are too laid back and that is affecting their advancement.
Obiano hasn't started doing anything, he's just making noise. At least Chime has done to the best of his ability (even if you insist his vision is limited). When Obiano accomplishes something tangible, tell us - spare us the praise singing.

What is Obiano trying to do? How is Chime different from any other governor (save Lagos)?

3dankey: I have commented just once on this thread and will like to air my views again. Listen my IGBO BROTHERS, the only way we can attain this kind of height's that we all wish for,Is to have a FUNCTIONAL SEAPORT on our own. Jonathan gave us an international airport good, but we need a seaport. Only peter obi was even serious about it when he was in office and I still blame him for not persuading jonathan enough to complete the dredging of the river niger (don't know if I am correct) that would have made onitsha seaport a reality. We don't need a river port please.
I can also remember when he was the chairman of southeast governors forum: their was a resolution then from 1 of their meetings for the FEDERAL government to complete the seaport in akwa ibom(ABAKA not sure of the name) and link it by RAIL to ABA and other south east states. Now he is no longer there, don't know what the clueless/useless orji is doing. When ever I see us insulting ourselves I almost give up, we are IGBO's and should learn to love ourself (let's stop all this ANAMBRA better than enugu fight) instead let us complement ourselves.
Now take it or leave, there have being a grand plan to frustrate the IGBO's for a long time starting with ENUGU,ONITSHA, and ABA. Thank God we got an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, not enough until we get that seaport. A seaport in south east or close to the east like akwa ibom, will change the whole of IGBO land in less than 3 years. Just wish our governors are seeing this things we discussing here and can achieve it.
NOTE: achieving this will not be easy, remember stella odua (only for international airport oooo). For this expect enough blackmail and other things from those that do not want to see any thing good in the east. I rest my case and hope that one day a seaport close to the east and linked my RAIL will be a reality.
Onitsha will never be a seaport, it will always be a river port. Unless we're ready to spend like US (on the Mississippi) it will never accommodate ocean going vessels.

An important question - how rapidly is Kano growing relative to Enugu?
PoliticsRe: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by HappyJoe: 12:44pm On Aug 20, 2014
Afam4eva: Haba bros, how can Onitsha comprise of a city outside the state of Anambra. Where's that done? Asaba and Onitsha are two different cities irrespective nof how intertwined they are. Asaba is the capital of another state and has nothing to do with Onitsha save for the closeness. let's stop this delusion.
I think it's more realistic to talk about Onitsha/Asaba - just like Ibafo & Lagos can be grouped together. Onitsha is expanding to Okpanam, Ibusa, Ogwashi-Ukwu & co.
PoliticsRe: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by HappyJoe: 12:34pm On Aug 20, 2014
asha80: well i hope you can walk the talk..there is a reason i asked that question because i have come across seve igbo people who will shout that igbos need to industrialize heavily in the south east but meet the them at a lonely or sober time you will hear or see them making plans to site outfits in lagos rather than the east and you begin to question their lamentation before...point is the issue lies in us individuals and not in any government or politician...nnewi is an example of walking the talk.
The problem is logistics. The Southeast doesn't have good logistic links (this is a deliberate post civil war policy championed by Hausas and Yorubas).

Nigeria is an import dependent nation - so if you're not near the port, you're business will suffer. Somebody takes it from you. For a long time, the Southeast had no links with the outside world - and with Enugu airport and Ethiopian Airlines those links are still tenuous.

Kano has always had an international airport. You see, in Nigeria these things are deliberate.

Unemadu: It's probably a good thing to compare and compete and try to outdo or learn from one another.
That said u have to give it to kano. It has been a commercial nerve center from time immemorial and our brothers have made fortunes there.

Once thing struck me from basilos post and that is that Unity bank has their head quarters there.
This shows they believe in themselves.
Now has no one ever asked why Fidelity bank is headquartered in Lagos and not Anambra ? Or even zenith bank in Delta?

These are questions the igbos should ask themselves
Is Unity Bank making money? Ndigbo are into business to make money, not to do "nwanne". The biggest clients and stock market is in Lagos - so that's where your HQ should be.

Unity Bank was formed by Northerners when they got afraid that Igbos, Yorubas & Delta folks were totally taking over banking.

PoliticsRe: Enugu, The Pride Of The East. by HappyJoe: 11:12pm On Aug 19, 2014
Please can we put this Kano debate to rest.

1. Kano is probably the 2nd largest city in Nigeria.
2. But understand that apart from Kaduna, Kano & Maiduguri - there isn't any really large city in the far North.
3. In contrast, the Southeast has Enugu, Aba, Nnewi & Onitsha - important economic centers in their own right.
4. Our governors have ignored some of our key towns, this should be addressed.
5. The Southeast/South South urban cluster in unmatched in Nigeria - we just aren't utilizing it fully - Aba, Warri, Asaba, Onitsha, Benin, Enugu, Nnewi, PH and Uyo - all in close proximity.
6. In terms of economic activity; please note that even though Kano has a massive Shoprite facility, it's size is 24,000 sq.m compared to 22,530 sq.m in the Enugu mall. If Anambra alone can support 3 large shopping malls (Onitsha, Aba & Nnewi) it means there's A LOT of economic activity going on in the Southeast.
7. Kano absorbs a LOT of the business from at least 12 Northern states, this isn't like the Southeast/SS where many business centers exist.
8. So Kano is big, but we should understand why.

Let's return to the topic of this thread - this should tell you about Enugu's potential.

ENUGU: NEXT FRONTIER FOR REAL ESTATE GROWTH IN NIGERIA!

What makes Enugu a growth frontier for real estate development? More to the point, why should we be looking at this second tier city? The answer is relatively straightforward – look at the data.

Despite the megacity hype, in the coming decades the vast majority of urban Africans will live not in sprawling urban centres like Lagos but in small and midsize cities like Enugu. The United Nations projects that by 2050, seven out of 10 people will live in urban environments and that roughly two thirds of this global urban growth will happen in Africa. Yet by 2025, only seven percent of the continent’s city-dwellers will live in Lagos, Cairo and Kinshasa – the continent’s megacities. Add the projected populations of popular capital cities like Johannesburg, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to the total and the headcount remains far below the overall figure for Africa. That is because much of the growth will happen in smaller cities and towns.

In 2025, nearly half of Africa’s urban- dwellers will reside in towns of fewer than half a million people, with cities of one to five million people accounting for 27 percent of the overall urban population – the second-largest slice of the pie. Despite how we think of their larger and more distinguished cousins, these smaller cities are the dominant spaces for urban experience.

Many smaller African cities that lie just off the radar are experiencing a quiet transformation, largely unnoticed by the press and outside the purview of big business and foreign investment.

Take “Coal City” Enugu as an example. Enugu is by most measurements an ordinary city. A landlocked town of less than four million people, it does not make the list of important Nigerian cities – an honour generally reserved for Lagos, oil-rich Port Harcourt and the capital Abuja.

Yet in less than three years, rental rates in Enugu have more than doubled; in some cases, the value of land has tripled. Local estate agents confirm that the annual rent for a standard three-bedroom flat in the city’s New Haven enclave – a medium-to-high density area – is around $3,078, up 150 percent since 2011. Residential properties that were acquired at $7,850 are now valued at $48,300 – less than half a decade later.

So what has fuelled the rapid transformation in Enugu’s Real estate sector?

Strong Government Investment:

The city’s land and real estate market took off in 2011, the year its current administration, headed by lawyer-turned-politician Sullivan Chime, began an unprecedented and aggressive infrastructural development programme. Some 350-odd kilometers of road have been repaired and resurfaced in Enugu city and nearby Nsukka, and just under $120.8 million awarded in contracts to do the same for 250 kilometres of roads in outlying areas. Unsurprisingly, works and infrastructure received the highest allocation of any area in Enugu’s 2014 public budget – a total of $94.2 million.

A Growing Regional Focus:

Beyond the increased investment in transforming Enugu’s infrastructure, Enugu is also the focal point of a renewed interest by many from Eastern Nigeria. As the former administrative capital for Eastern Nigeria, Enugu has always appealed to the region’s predominantly Igbo community as a place to own a second home for vacation or retirement, especially for those in the Diaspora or living in other parts of the country. In addition, recent terrorism in Nigeria’s north and a plague of kidnappings in nearby states have driven an increase in settlers to Enugu state. Finally, a significant amount of the property demand by real estate investors and hoteliers looking to cash in on new serviced estates, a pumping nightlife scene and a budding tourism sector.

An Emerging Transportation Hub

The lack of a port or strategic waterway has limited the city’s potential as a major import base, however with progress towards an international air cargo hub in nearby Owerri and an inland seaport in Onitsha in addition to rumours of a free trade zone, Enugu is well placed to benefit from growing trade activity in the East. Apart from supporting direct flights to Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, the recent internationalisation of the local Akanu Ibiam airport has seen a significant increase in passenger traffic. Ethiopian Airlines now operates four connecting flights weekly to various destinations, including Beijing and Dubai, and KLM is also bidding hard for a hanger.

The future of urban Africa may currently be reported in the rise of megacities like Lagos, but the mostly unreported Coal city of Enugu will also have a few things to say about where the continent is going and how to get there. While investment attitudes towards African cities still display a preoccupation with the economic and political capital cities, do not overlook the “midi-cities” that make up the majority of Africa’s urban population and growth areas. Do not overlook Enugu.

Nothing divided Muslims and Christians in Northern Nigeria as much as Sharia law - & Jonathan wasn't responsible for that.

As for the usual threats against Ndigbo in the North - many are finding out that life is more important than making money. Many are moving out of the North - Ndigbo don't go to the North to beg, so the economy of the North suffers too.

pheliciti: Muslims are intolerant right? And the Jews are better? Please dig up answers to the following?
Why is it that no Christian can openly proselytize in Israel
Why are there more Jewish Muslims than Christains in Israel
Why don't our popular Penticostal churches set up in Israel; after all, that was the starting place of the Christian faith
Why do Jews treat christians with derision especially as they have a link in Jesus and Moses (note that the fight with the Arabs is over land)
Do you know the Talmud lays no blame on a Jew killing a non- Jew?
Closer home, since you justify your point with Nigerian examples, why do you have more churches in the North than you have mosques in the South (SW exempted)?
Do you really believe that killings in the North is Muslim vs Christian, especially if most of the casualties are Moslems too
I do not wish that any other race would go through what the Jews went through during the holocaust of about 5 years. Neither would any race want to be victims of a slave trade that pillaged the best of the black race for upwards 500 hundred years. It is thus wrong to say that the 15 million Jews have contributed more to the world than to 1.2 billion blacks. For one thing, i came to the world through the black race and it is up to me to make the best of it; likewise each self deprecating black man. Finally, it is certainly wrong to call 1billion Muslims intolerant because of contemporary media blitz. The killings the Middle East are wrong, but dig deeper for the causes and see if they are merely religious. Do read up on how the supposedly intolerant Muslims allowed the Israelis to settle in the Palestine territories only to be made landless, read the historical Muslim conduct during the crusades (although prosecuted by Europe) and then take a point of view of who is indeed intolerant.
2,500 Delegates Attend World Pentecostal Conference in Jerusalem

More than 2,500 delegates from many countries are participating in the three-day world conference here of the Pentecostal movement, formally organized as the Church of God in Christ. The movement claims 8,500,000 members throughout the world, and considers the rebirth of the State of Israel as one of the signs that the Messiah is coming.
Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in a message to the delegates emphasized “the historic meaning of the Biblical promises for the return of Israel to its land and the revival of the language of the prophets.” Abba Eban, Israel’s Minister of Education, addressing the conference, pointed out that “this generation’s greatest issue is draw not between Christianity and Judaism, and not between Israel and the Christian nations, but between those who assert and those who deny the supremacy of faith and freedom. “

107 Ugandan Anglicans going to Jerusalem for Global Anglican Future Conference

Thirty-four Bishops from the Church of Uganda and their wives will travel to Jerusalem later this month for the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON). Also in the delegation, there will be thirty clergy and lay leaders from around the country with experience in different areas of ministry.

1,000 people from around the worldwide Anglican Communion, including more than 280 bishops, will participate in this Pilgrimage, and the Church of Uganda will be more than ten percent. Twelve members of our own Anglican Youth Fellowship Choir have been invited to lead the music for this strategic event, and this is a great honour for us in Uganda.

We agree, but you'll have to answer a few questions.

1. What has "political relevance" achieved for the average Yoruba man? Obasanjo was there for 8 years, couldn't even redo Lagos/Ibadan road.
2. What has "political relevance" achieved for the average Hausa man? Plateau has even higher literacy rates than Kano - not to talk of Imo.

In spite of "political irrelevance", Ndigbo on average are doing better or just as well as everyone else in Nigeria. We're the most realistic people in Nigeria - there are no leaders. None of these charlatans are leaders - in the North or South. When there are leaders like Azikiwe, M.I. Okpara & Ojukwu - Ndigbo follow them and are ready to die for them.

But unlike Yoruba people who believe a Tinubu actually leads them, I CANNOT look at the likes of Hope Uzodinma and call them my leaders, tufiakwa!

Christians in Iraq want Muslims to stop 1. beheading them 2. forcing them to flee their homes 3. forcing them to pay jizya tax.

Christians in Pakistan want Muslims to stop 1. sentencing them to death for blasphemy 2. burning their homes.

Christians in Saudi Arabia want Muslims to stop 1. preventing them from building houses of worship 2. seizing their bibles.

Islam has no competition in intolerance in the World.

Yes, there are a few intolerant Jews, but this doesn't compare with the institutionalized intolerance of Muslim societies - even Sharia states in Nigeria.

As far a Christians are concerned - Jews are 100 times more tolerant than Muslims. I can support this with facts.

I'm surprised that as late as August 2014, APC hasn't told Ndigbo what its plans for the Southeast are:

1. Will they expand the Enugu airport done by Jonathan?
2. What do they intend to do about the 2nd Niger Bridge - if tolling is an issue, will they abolish tolls?
3. What are their plans for roads in the Southeast - do they have an emergency action plan?
4. How do they intend to help the Southeast/South South with sea ports, do they have a plan?

Instead of dealing with substantive issues, they are majoring on minor issues like whether an Igbo man would be running mate or VP. Let me remind them that NO Igbo man has governed Nigeria for 44 years, Ekwueme was Shagari's VP and Okadigbo was Buhari's running mate - so we're not stupid, we know who our enemies are!

APC is not a serious party and this Osita Okechukwu fellow is not a serious person - this "chop sand nonsense theory" is simply juvenile rubbish. Is it supposed substitute for no plans, policies and programs to sell to Ndigbo?

Ikengawo: our people are very short sighted. Sometimes it amazes me but you're right. They can't see it this way. They know about money but not economics. We're not strategic at all and have a hard time looking at the bigger picture. I always get frustrated when my own Orlu people want to create an Orlu state for no reason. It's not as if we're marginalized because we have dominated the governorship, but Owerri of course will get more attention than Orlu because it's the capital. Break the two away will create 2 weak capitals because there's strength in numbers but we're so short sighted that this doesn't make sense. This is the only reason I question Biafra, or nature is very short sighted and vision to see beyond the immediate reality is limited. We're good realists but you can't always be a realist if you want to change your reality. I see the same problem in many SE states. Anyone in Abia that governs and neglects Aba just because they're not from there is a fool. Aba has the power to transform the entire former east region. When you go to Anambra, the same second class status is given to Onitsha. It's only Enugu that pays attention to it's best shot at greatness.
Very right - the problem is that we haven't gotten over the clan/village mentality.

The problem is that the average Southeast politician lacks the vision to drive that. Consider Abakaliki, about an hour's drive from Enugu, the governor has no vision to tap into the economic growth of Enugu or leverage on proximity to Enugu.

Let's face it......90% of the politicians in this country are greedy, visionless and self-serving twerps; they're in politics just for the money, fame, and chance to be called 'your excellency sir'!
We were lucky with Sullivan Chime, but then lightening doesn't strike twice does it?......Not when it's something good it doesn't!
I pray it doesn't get to that, Chimaraoke (for all his faults) was better than Orji Uzor Kalu - & Enugu politicians (though no gentlemen) don't tend to be as crazy as Abia or Anambra politicians.

If they guy comes from Nsukka - Nsukka people tend to be level-headed; but I'm not sure such a person will emphasize Enugu like Sullivan. He'll massively develop Nsukka.

And Enugu needs the next 8 years to move it from a town to a regional city. I have no doubts that with the right set of policies, Enugu can favorably compete with Kano - in a decade. It needs an infrastructure plan that combines roads & buildings with attracting businesses - Ndigbo are fleeing the North & Enugu is often a great town to settle.

The problem is that a typical local politician may not see the need for all this - and might just prefer to be a "local champion" - no vision, no planning, nothing. Such politicians abound in the Southeast, neighboring Ebonyi is a very good example.

I worry about continuity in Enugu - Jim installed Nnamani, Nnamani quarreled with Jim. Nnamani installed Sullivan, Sullivan quarreled with Nnamani. Sullivan has refused to complete Nnamani's projects (even when they make sense) - like the International Conference Center in Independence Layout or abandoning Hotel Presidential. I fear the next guy could quarrel with Sullivan and abandon all his plans.

Sullivan has laid a solid foundation, Enugu's fate rests on the shoulders of whoever takes over from him - i.e. who governs Enugu for the next 8 years.

They should choose wisely, Enugu's politics is a bit rough (it is not for gentlemen) & there's a risk of them having a "street-fighter", who won't have too much time for development.

Please Nigeria should close all borders with Liberia - not airports, but land borders. They WILL want to come here (with their funny American sounding accents).

Liberia has barely 4 million people (smaller in population than Anambra state). It has very limited capabilities. Its leaders, (instead of improving healthcare) prefer to speak big English at Davos.

This is how govt tells lies - this time last year they said "37 out of the 41 bridges were complete". So nothing has changed.
