Politics / James Ibori Arrives Oghara In Delta State, Welcomed By Crowd (Photos) by harbdulrasaq88(m): 4:24pm On Feb 04, 2017
Mammoth crowd on Saturday received former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, at his country home at Oghara.

Ibori recently served out a 13-year jail term in the United Kingdom and was discharged from prison on December 21, 2016. He was convicted for money laundering by the British court.

Excited kinsmen and women shut the entire town down with business outfits like shops and markets closed for the day.

Many residents of the town had gone out to line the ever-busy Oghara Junction point of the East/West Road, waiting for the arrival of the former governor.

Celebrities / Mr Ibu John Okafor On Suicide Battle: How I Almost Jumped Into A Well In Ajao by harbdulrasaq88(m): 12:14pm On Jan 28, 2017
Mr Ibu John Okafor On Suicide Battle: How I Almost Jumped Into A Well In Ajao Estate Lagos

John Okafor aka Mr. Ibu is loved by many people because he puts smiles on their faces through his work. In a chat with Saturday Beats, the comic actor said that he would have taken his life since 1997 due to the hardship he faced in life.

He said that at that point in his life, things were so hard that he could barely afford to feed himself. To make matters worse, the actor said he had no roof over his head and suicide seemed like the easiest option.

“Do you know that there was a day that I had prepared to kill myself in Ajao Estate? That day, I was prepared to jump into a well because of the situation that surrounded me. Three days before that day, I had not eaten and I did not have hope of eating for the next week. I was only surviving on water and I hate it when I bother anyone. Most of my close friends were not bothered about my well-being even though it was obvious that I was not alright. I remember December 18, 1997, a friend of mine who I squatted with called me in the morning and told me that he would be going home for Christmas and he did not want anyone to be in his room. I assured him that no one would come to his place but he said he wanted me out of the room. I told him that I did not have another place to stay and he should trust me that as usual, I would take good care of the place. Though I was older than him, I did all the washing and cleaning of the house to the extent that I washed his panties and underwear. I did that so that I could have a roof over my head. But out of anger, that my friend went into the house, brought out all my things and threw them outside, then he told me to leave his house, he locked his door and left.

“From where I was seated, I was looking at the well. I thought to myself, ‘is it not better to end my life by jumping into the well so that when people return in the evening and they need water, they would discover my body and my friend would know that he was the reason I committed suicide?’ I went to the well and as I opened the lid and prepared to jump inside, the image of my mother’s face flashed through my mind. I quickly closed the well and began to wonder how my mother knew that I wanted to kill myself. My mother was still alive at the time; she was about 80 years old. I went back and leaned by the wall. A neighbour, Francis, was playing a song by Michael Bolton titled ‘When I am back on my Feet Again.’ The song gave me hope and I decided to stay alive,” he said.

Okafor said that after he had decided against killing himself, he needed to find somewhere to sleep and since he had no one to stay with; he opted to sleep under a lorry, a space where dogs used as their house.

He stayed there for a while till God sent a helper to him.

“I cleaned the place and was able to get some cartons which I used to do a tent. In the course of cleaning the place, I realised that it was dogs that used to sleep there at night but I had no choice. One night, about 30 dogs were barking so no one could sleep so I had to move my cartons to another location. While I was changing my bearing, I saw some people gathering. I hid my cartons, went close to the place and saw that it was a movie audition. I saw some of my friends there like Pete Edochie, and a friend called Sandra Ezeh. When Sandra saw me, she hugged me and said she was a big fan of my work especially my role in ‘Ikuku.’ She asked if I was doing anything and when I told her I wasn’t, she insisted that I accompany her to see her boyfriend. Since I had no job, I followed her; beside, all I needed then was food. I was so hungry at the time that it began to affect my eye sight. Sadly, her boyfriend had travelled so she said we should go to see another friend. We met the woman who owned a bar and when I asked for food, she said all she had was pepper soup and drinks. I told her to give me pepper soup and she was nice enough to tell them to give me two agidi with the pepper soup. After I ate the food, I fell into a deep sleep.

“When I woke up, I saw an address, 125 Adetola Street, then immediately, I remembered that a friend had called me asking me to stay in his house because he was travelling to Germany and that was the address. Immediately I crossed the street and went to the house. When I got into the house, my friend, Frank, just got in from London. He was so happy to see me that he hugged me and we both fell to the ground. He then said that no matter where I was staying, I had to move into his house. We went to pick my load from where I put it. Frank asked why my load was outside and I lied to him that I was preparing to travel. That was how he gave me a room in his flat. I prayed to God thanking him for saving me. He started taking me out and buying me clothes. It was from there I got my footing,” he said.

Celebrities / Ibinabo Fibresima Explains Why Nollywood Veterans Have Health Problems by harbdulrasaq88(m): 8:23pm On Jan 24, 2017
Nollywood Actress, Ibinabo Fibresima in a fresh interview lamented the spate of illness experienced by Veterans in the movie industry.

She also complained that the Muhammadu Buhari administration was not really helping the movie industry. ''It’s hard because with the past government it was easy to reach out and get help but with this new government it’s not easy. It’s not that they won’t help if we try and reach them but it’s a longer process.

''We still say to our veteran actors, we must learn to start to look after ourselves. I have uncles, aunties that are old, they are not sick because they live well. I keep telling people, we have abused ourselves in our industry because we work so much there is no break, no time out so we will break down one day. And our lifestyles do not help us, we drink, drink and drink we don’t care what we drink as long as it is alcohol.

''We need to stop for a minute and remember that we have a life like every other human being. Being celebrity does not make us supernatural. We should start to look after ourselves so that we can live long. When you get to 40, my dear, start to go to the hospital.

Then she referred to the lady as her girlfriend. Am I reaching or is Beverly now into women? See more photos after the cut...

Politics / PHOTOS: Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima Presents N183m Budget by harbdulrasaq88(m): 9:06am On Dec 22, 2016
Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima yesterday presented the Appropriation Bill of N183 million to the House of Assembly.

Tagged “Budget of Consolidation, Restoration and Rebirth”, N33 billion was allocated for the reconstruction of schools destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgency and construction of new ones.

The health sector got N19 billion, while Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement got N13 billion. Agriculture got N7 billion.

Shettima said education was worst hit by the Boko Haram attacks, maintaining that his administration is taking a major step to fix the laxities.

“Education is the sector which captures our attention the most. It is the area that has suffered the worst onslaught of the insurgency. Our experiences have shown that its inadequacy could be risky and its neglect could also be a recipe for insecurity even in the future.

“It is for this reason that the education sector alone is allocated N33 billion for primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. The amount allocated is to enable us continue with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the infrastructure and facilities at the secondary and tertiary levels.

“The huge budgetary provision is also to enable the full take-off of our newly-recognised state university in 2017, and ensure that more facilities and structures are put in place to obtain accreditation of all courses billed to take-off next year,” Shettima said.

Politics / Senate Begins Final Work On Economic Recovery Bills This Week by harbdulrasaq88(m): 1:14pm On Dec 04, 2016
Press Release
December 4, 2016

Senate Begins Final Work on Economic Recovery Bills This Week

This week the Senate will move a step closer to passing half of its historic and much needed economic reform package as six of the 11 priority economic growth and reform bills are slated for public hearings between December 5 and 8.

The legislation scheduled for public hearing on December 5 includes the National Development Bank of Nigeria Bill which is intended to provide short, medium and long term financing to participating financial institutions for loans to small scale, medium and industrial enterprises in agro allied businesses, manufacturing, mining and the National Road Fund Act to fund the rehabilitation and maintenance of the national road system.

Also, public hearing on the Federal Roads Authority Act which is to manage the federal roads network so that it is safe and efficient, with a view toward meeting the socio-economic demands of the country and the Customs and Excise Reform Act which seeks to reform the administration and management of the Customs Service for greater accountability and revenue generation will hold the same day.
On December 6, Land and Marine Transport Committee will hold public hearing on the National Transport Commission Act. The legislation establishes a National Transport Commission as an effective, independent and impartial authority in the transport sector.

The following day, December 7 and 8, the Committee on Upstream Petroleum will hold public hearings on the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIB). This long awaited legislation will establish a framework for the creation of commercially oriented and profit driven petroleum entities that ensures value addition and the internationalization of the petroleum industry.

Procedurally, legislation is referred to the committee with the appropriate jurisdiction for it to hold public hearing after the bill has passed the first and second reading during the Senate plenary session. Once the committee submits the public hearing report to the full Senate, the legislation is subject to a third reading, or final passage by members sitting at plenary as a committee of whole.

Commenting on the progress being made on the passage of key bills, the Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said the “Senate has been on a steady march to complete passage of the bills which forms our economic growth package before the end of the year. We have maintained all along that we would not rest until we did our part to end the recession, spur economic growth and bring relief to the people,” he further stated.

The Senate’s economic strategy was unveiled on September 20 of this year by Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki. The 11 bills were part of a wider list of recommendations to President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for how the National Assembly (NASS) could work with the Presidency to end the recession, restore investor confidence and begin to reorient the Nigerian economy. Key to much of the agenda is providing greater space in the economy for private sector participation, support for entrepreneurship and above all job creation.

Also commenting on the busy week awaiting the Senate, Saraki himself said “this is a very important week for the Senate. We have moved beyond partisanship and we have moved beyond rhetoric. We are now in the realm where we have really worked to deliver something meaningful to the people of Nigeria.”

Senator Abdullahi concurred with the Senate President. “People should really pay attention to the work the Senate has produced. The economic crisis provided the opportunity to work for long overdue reforms in government administration and accountability. The Senate seized upon the opening and now the country is on the verge of truly benefitting from the work of the NASS”, he said.

END

Signed:

Senate President’s Media Office
