August 1 Protests: NASS Cuts Short Recess, Holds Emergency Session Wednesday

The National Assembly has recalled its members from annual recess and will hold an emergency plenary session on Wednesday to discuss issues of national importance.

LEADERSHIP gathered from credible sources privy to the development that the decision was not unconnected to the planned August 1 nationwide protests against hardship in the country.

Recall that both Senate and the House of Representatives had last week Tuesday adjourned plenary till September 17, 2024 for lawmakers to observe their annual vacation.

The emergency plenary was disclosed in a notice by the Clerk of the Senate, Francis Akubueze, sent to Senators, saying the plenary will hold by noon on Wednesday.

The memo reads: “The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened.

“Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.

*Protest: Go And Interface With Your People, APC Tells Political Office-holders In South-West.*

Against the backdrop of the impending August 1 nationwide protests against hardship in the country, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has directed political officeholders from the South-West zone to return to their various bases and interface with their people on efforts being made by President Bola Tinubu to reform the nation’s economy.

The APC South-West Zonaal Executive Committee, in an emergency meeting held in Akure, the Ondo State capital, warned against turning South-West into the theatre of violent protests.

In a communique signed by the national vice chairman/zonal chairman, Southwest APC, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, and zonal secretary Hon. Vincent Bewaji, a copy which was made available to LEADERSHIP on Monday, the party
pleaded with Nigerians to “bear these temporary hardships and pains with patience and equanimity.”

While assuring that, in no time, the pains would give way to meaningful livelihood for all Nigerians, the party called on leaders of the South-West including traditional rulers, leaders of opposition parties, elite, trade union leaders, market women, students, and religious leaders to stand up and protect all socio-economic interests of the zone.

Pointedly, the ruling party condemned the call for change of a democratically-elected government outside of election and other legally provided procedures, describing the move as “unconstitutional, illegal, undemocratic, and provocative.”

According to APC, “Election losers, their supporters, and sympathizers must learn to wait for the next round of elections.”

The relief for a while now is that after the JSS 3 students concluded their state exams, they haven't been coming to school.

As a teacher, what's your workload and pay range?

PS: I took advantage of a situation to request for an increase last month and 2k was added.....
