Game is over and the final score is Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon. Here is the match report. The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, after defeating the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 3-2 in Alexandria. Odion Ighalo scored a brace, and Alex Iwobi got one goal to book Nigeria a match next Wednesday with the winner between Egypt and South Africa. Odion Ighalo scored twice and teed up Alex Iwobi’s winning goal as Nigeria eliminated defending Africa Cup of Nations champions Cameroon after a thrilling 3-2 victory in Alexandria on Saturday. China-based forward Ighalo bundled home a scrappy opener but Clarence Seedorf’s Cameroon hit back through Stephane Bahoken and Clinton Njie with two quick-fire goals before half-time. Nigeria drew level as Ighalo volleyed in his second just past the hour and he then turned provider to play in Iwobi to steer home three minutes later and set up the prospect of a highly anticipated quarter-final clash with hosts and favourites Egypt. Seedorf’s penchant for change has seen the former Dutch star heavily rotate his Cameroon side in Egypt, with Karl Toko Ekambi dropping to the bench here and 2017 player of the tournament Christian Bassogog recalled along with Clinton Njie in a bid to breathe life into a faltering attack. Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr paid the price for resting key players in the shock 2-0 loss to Madagascar, with Wilfred Ndidi, Kenneth Omeruo and Alex Iwobi all returning to the starting line-up. The Super Eagles eliminated Cameroon in the first knockout round the last time they were reigning champions in 2004, and their bid to repeat history looked on when Ighalo nudged Nigeria ahead with a scrappy opening goal after 19 minutes. Moments after Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui powered a header over at the other end, Peter Etebo hooked a deep cross to the far post where it was driven back across goal by Omeruo and Ighalo stabbed home via a huge deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Andre Onana. It was the first time Cameroon had conceded in Egypt, but after scoring just twice in three group games the Indomitable Lions matched that output in three frenzied minutes before half-time. Bahoken pulled Cameroon level on 41 minutes when he ghosted in behind Omeruo to connect with a terrific whipped cross from Bassogog, and Njie soon fired them in front after outpacing Ola Aina to a flick-on, holding his nerve and balance to slip beyond Daniel Akpeyi. Njie nearly got the better of Akpeyi early in the second half, the Nigeria ‘keeper superbly clawing the ball out from just inside his post after the Marseille winger’s cutback was deflected towards goal. Rohr introduced Samuel Chukwueze with an hour gone but it was Ighalo, the top scorer in qualifying, who came to the rescue once more with a thumping finish after Ahmed Musa chested a cross into his path. Ighalo joined Senegal star Sadio Mane on a tournament-leading three goals and he played a key role in Iwobi’s decisive strike on 66 minutes, threading the ball through to the Arsenal winger to side-foot past Onana. Ngadeu-Ngadjui toed wide at a corner but Cameroon struggled to threaten Nigeria in the closing stages with Ighalo denied a hat-trick late on as Onana plunged low to his right to knock away the forward’s header. The South-East geo-political zone has failed to clinch the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as President Muhammadu Buhari has re-appointed Boss Mustapha as the SGF thereby ending speculations that a former Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, from Ebonyi State, would be appointed the SGF. Onu, who is from the South-East, is a long time ally of Buhari having been a member of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party which produced Buhari as its Presidential candidate twice. With the positions of President, Vice-President, Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker and SGF all filled, it implies that the South-East has been omitted from all key positions. In the previous Buhari administration, Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the Peoples Democratic Party emerged as the Deputy Senate President over controversial circumstances which did not go down with the All Progressives Congress-led government The highest position being held by the South-East today is the minority leader of the Senate in the person of Eyinnaya Abaribe representing Abia-South senatorial district. Speaking with our correspondent on Saturday, the National Publicity Secretary of Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, Mr. Uche Achi-Okpaga, said the organisation was not surprised by the President’s actions. The Ohanaeze spokesman said the South-East survived the last four years of Buhari’s government and would also be able to survive the next four years. He said the President ought to act like a statesman by appreciating the nation’s diversity. Achi-Okpaga said, “We are not surprised. This is not news. We never expected anything from him before. When he was inaugurated for a second term, I issued a statement that we were not expecting anything from Buhari. “This is a man that has never minced words about his intentions. He never placed any premium on South-East so why should you expect him to give us appointments? You see how he went all out to remove the head of the judiciary who is from the South? “We were able to survive the first tenure and we have enough shock absorbers to help us endure till the end of his second tenure. So, our prayer is that he takes things easy so that the country will not disintegrate.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/south-east-loses-sgf-not-surprised-says-ohanaeze/

The Coalition of the United Political Parties on Thursday says it has filed a suit to challenge the continuous stay in office of some aides of President Muhammadu Buhari, who have refused to vacant office without fresh appointments. The spokesperson for CUPP, Mr Imo Ugochinyere, at a press briefing on Thursday said the coalition in the suit was seeking orders declaring the offices vacant, the aides as illegal occupants and impostors and that their continuous stay in office was in violation of the constitution. He said, “The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, is still in that office, Senator Ita Enang is still parading himself as Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate); Mr Abba Kyari is still parading himself as the Chief of Staff to the President; Mr Femi Adesina is still appearing on television programmes as Special Adviser to the President on Media, likewise Mr Garba Shehu, who is parading himself as a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity. “These among other officials of the Presidency are still illegally occupying their former offices without any lawful authority as the President has not made any announcement to the nation that he has appointed or reappointed officers into those positions. “Section 151 (3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended clearly provides: Any appointment made pursuant to the provisions of this section shall be at the pleasure of the President and shall cease when the President cease to hold office.” Stating that Buhari’s first term expired in the midnight of May 28 before he was sworn in again for a second term with fresh oath of office and a new mandate, Ugochinyere argued that all political appointments made in his first term, except statutory ones, had ceased to exist. “These officers who are parading themselves as officers of the government without formal appointments have violated the Code of Conduct Act which demands that political office holders must declare their assets before commencement of service to the government (this violation our lawyers are already working on seeking order for prosecution of these officers for carrying out functions of government without declaring their assets). “The impunity with which this government has been known continues as long as the President, despite the clear provisions of the constitution, allows his aides to continue in office. “President Buhari’s inability to appoint personal/presidential aides or indeed any other appointments over one month after taking the oath of office is a sign the President is still not yet ready to govern and lacks understanding of the urgency needed to fix Nigeria. This was the same path that landed Nigeria in recession in 2015. How a President seems to want to do the same thing over again yet expects to receive a different result is worrying.” He warned all affected aides to stay away from their former offices until and unless they were armed with fresh appointment letters or risk criminal prosecution and trial for violation of the Code of Conduct Bureau Act. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that until Nigerians accept new values and cultivate better ways of living, the old ways of doing things will keep holding Nigeria back. The President spoke while receiving members of the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) at the State House, Abuja. He also promised to pursue inclusive and participatory growth that will create opportunities for all. President Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, assured Nigerians that his administration will leave Nigeria better than when it came to power by focusing on the tripod of tackling insecurity, promoting economic diversification and fighting corruption. “Fulfilling these three promises is fundamental to taking Nigeria to the Next Level. I assure you that I am resolute on the delivery of these promises. When we leave, Nigeria will be a far better place than when we came,’’ the President said. He said efforts were made in the last four years to return Nigeria to path of sustainable growth, especially in re-energizing the economy, appreciating BMO for its diligence and sacrifices in ensuring effective communication with Nigerians, despite distractions. “It is not an easy job to sell this administration’s successes: we are doing unpopular things in the face of powerful individuals and taking on vested interests who are accustomed to the corrupt old order. “But we must do things the right way; if we promised change, then we must deliver it, regardless of whose interest we touch. There must be a manifest departure from the old order,’’ he noted. The President, who commended the organisation for supporting his vision since 2014, and propagating the achievements of the administration since 2015, said he remained committed to ending the challenge of insecurity in the country. “One message that is dear to me, that I urge you to propagate, is that I am determined to end the security challenges we face as a country, and make Nigeria a peaceful and prosperous country,’’ he added. In his remark, the Coordinator of the media organisation and Senior Special Assistant to the President, Malam Garba Shehu, said the group had grown into an institution as it was in place before elections in 2015, remained throughout the President’s first term, and will outlive the second term. Shehu said the organisation remains committed to the advancement of the “Buhari presidency’’, attributing its survival to some good spirited Nigerians Read more here https://thickmatch.com/buhari-nigerians-accept-new-values-cultivate-better-ways-living/

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, 2019 presidential candidate, on Tuesday declared that there is nothing wrong with the EFCC prosecuting the immediate past Senate President, Bukola Saraki for alleged corruption but warned that this must not be done as a persecution. Atiku pointed out that Saraki, who led his 2019 presidential campaign, is one of the most investigated politicians in Nigeria, who has been investigated and prosecuted all the way to the Supreme Court without being found guilty. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, recently disclosed it was investigating Saraki’s stewardship during his period as the governor of Kwara State and the Senate President. “Let it be stated in unequivocal terms that the investigation of Saraki’s stewardship, whether as a former Senate President or as a former governor of Kwara State, has absolutely nothing to do with the non-confirmation of Mr. Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the EFCC,” the Commission had said in a statement. However, the former Vice President observed that the current probe of Saraki “tends towards persecution.” In a post on his Facebook wall, Atiku wrote: “Ordinarily, there is nothing wrong in prosecuting immediate past Senate President, @bukolasaraki. He, himself, has indicated his preparedness to have his day in court. We, however, hope that he will indeed be PROSECUTED and not PERSECUTED. “I stand against corruption in government, which was why my office personally facilitated the take-off of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission with a loan, after that most important anti-corruption institution was founded by then President Olusegun Obasanjo. “However, there is a huge difference between prosecution and persecution. I am all for prosecuting the corrupt, but I believe it is wrong to use the instruments of state to persecute political opponents. “Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the immediate past Senate President, is one of the most investigated politicians in Nigeria. He has been investigated and prosecuted all the way to the Supreme Court and has prevailed against his accusers. It was expected that that should have been the end of the matter. “However, the revival of previously investigated cases, and the fact that Dr. Saraki was politically opposed to the administration of General Muhammadu Buhari seems to give strong grounds for objective bystanders to conclude that his current travails have gone beyond prosecution and are now tending towards prosecution. “The laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are made for all and we fought for democracy so that the powers of the state would not be used to suborn tyranny and oppression. “In the instance, I urge Dr. Bukola Saraki to stand firm and take solace in the fact Nigerians still hold the constitution higher than any other authority.
