Simona Halep on Saturday shattered Serena Williams’ latest bid for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title with a devastating Wimbledon win. The Romanian won 6-2 6-2 in front of an incredulous Centre Court, running after everything the American threw at her. It is the 27-year-old former world number one’s second Grand Slam title after her 2018 French Open success. For 37-year-old Williams, it was a third major final defeat in 12 months. “She played out of her mind, it was a little bit deer in the headlights for me,” Williams said. Williams, like in last year’s final defeat by Angelique Kerber, seemed weighed down by public and personal expectations as she quickly fell 4-0 behind in the opening set. Halep had said beforehand that she had no pressure on her and she that is exactly how she played. From the outset she looked relaxed and confident, attacking the Williams serve and keeping the rallies long and deep to force the American into errors. While Williams closed her eyes at changeovers to try to regroup, Halep kept her eyes on the prize and kept her cool to take the victory on her second match point when the American sent a forehand into the net. Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has said the present administration has invested N900 billion in the power sector since its assumption of office in 2015. Osinbajo stated this when he paid a courtesy visit on the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien on Friday in Asaba, NAN reports. ”Since assumption of office, we have invested so far in terms of support N700 billion in the power sector. Earlier, we invested N200 billion,” he said. The vice president said further that the Federal Government was in the process of investing another N600 billion in the sector. On further steps to improve power supply in the country, the vice president said that the federal government had decided to take a second look at the power sector. According to him, one of the reasons why there are challenges in the power sector is that each of the Distribution Companies (Discos) controls a particular territory. ”And now we are saying that any company that wants to provide power to any territory, should be able to provide power for the territory and the people. ‘We have been able to break the existing monopoly in the power sector. Whether upgrade or not, the discos should be able to serve the people. ”Another strategy we are trying to introduce is to open up the power sector by restructuring,” he said. On the second Niger Bridge, Osinbajo said that the project was very important to the Federal Government. According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari did not only negotiate for the equipment being used for the construction of the bridge, but is also paying special attention to the project. “I was here six weeks ago to look at the progress of the work there and I must say that the project is going on well. “I hope that very soon, we should be completing not just the bridge, but also all surrounding infrastructure both here in Asaba and the other end of the bridge,” he added. Earlier, in his address of welcome, the Asagba of Asaba noted that poor power supply had been a major challenge in the Delta capital and appealed to the federal government to intervene in the situation. He also appealed to the government to compensate the people of Asaba on the 1967 massacre which claimed many lives, by establishing a federal university in the town. According to him, Asaba is the only state capital in Nigeria without a federal university. Read more here https://thickmatch.com/buhari-govt-invested-n900bn-power-since-assumption-office-osinbajo/

The Borno State collation agent for the Peoples Democratic Party in the last presidential election, Mr. Nicholas Msheliza, said at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Thursday that virtually all the result sheets from the various local governments in the state were mutilated. He also said there was zero accreditation of voters in over 200 polling units out of the 3,933 statutory polling units in the state. He noted that there were a total of 5,078 voting points, including the polling units. Testifying as the 23rd petitioners’ witness at the instance of the PDP and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Msheliza also said the total votes of 911, 786 declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission was well over the accredited voters across the state”. , Under cross-examination by the respondents to the petition, Msheliza, “In over 200 polling units across Borno State, there was zero accreditation of voters. “Virtually all the results sheets that were brought to the state collation centre were mutilated. “There was virtually no result sheet that was tendered at the state collation centre that did not have calculation error, and I did reject most of them. “The Returning Officer of the first respondent (INEC), would always ask the local government collation officers to go outside the collation centre to reconcile figures, add them up and when they tallied, they should back to present them. “The figures were wrong.” Asked by INEC’s lawyer, Yunus Usman (SAN), to give the correct figures, he said he was not in a position to do so. He added, referring to INEC’s collation officers, “These were university lecturers, simple arithmetic of plus and minus and they could not add well. “All the results were mutilated. “The correct results were collated by our party agents and given to our counsel.” Under cross-examination by the APC’s lawyer, Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), the witnesses maintained that “the results were already collated” before he got to the state collation centre. But Akintola referred him to a part of his witness statement on oath where he stated that he “observed in the course of transmitting the results from local government result sheets to the state result sheets wrong figures were being entered by INEC officials.” When asked to reconcile the seeming contradiction between his claim that the results were already collated before he got to the collation centre, and his deposition that he observed when the figures were being tendered, the witness said, “They were merely announcing the results to the hearing of people present.” When asked if he visited the polling units in the state as the state collation officer for the PDP, he said, “I could not have visited the polling units because of the peculiar security challenges in Borno State.” https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/virtually-all-result-sheets-were-mutilated-in-borno-atikus-collation-agent/amp/

The Christian Association of Nigeria has assured hidden issues surrounding the rape allegation against founder of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly(COZA), Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, by celebrity photographer, Busola Dakolo will be unravelled by its investigating team. CAN Acting General Secretary,Joseph Daramola, vowed the investigating team will carry out its work without fear or favour. He spoke with Thickmatch on Wednesday in Abuja while giving an update on the rape saga. Daramola said to Thickmatch: “We do not want to limit the investigation because it is very wide. We all know that there is something hidden in this issue. Without sentiment nobody is condoning any criminal act. “I am a lawyer and before you can prove offense of rape successfully, you have to consider so many things. You have to prove beyond every reasonable doubt before you can establish any rape case. “One cannot easily have his way into a woman, it is not possible and here we are talking about rape. If you look at the entire story, one has to do proper investigation. “For example if the court wants to look into it a lot of things will be considered. Church elders will interrogate Fatoyinbo without fear or favour. There is no pastor that people don’t tempt. According to him: “We are on the same page on this matter. The truth is that, the ministry of Jesus Christ is to save and not to destroy. And if our ministry is to save when even there is a member who has done wrong, the first thing that is to come into our mind is how do we face the situation? “Then after which you now deal with it in accordance to the scripture. And generally the ministry of Christ is to redeem mankind. “So this case calls for prayers and caution. Even if it is truth and it has not been established as truth, so the entire story is to be investigated. The church has to be very careful because, we are not supposed to be judgmental. He further stated to Thickmatch as follows “ if eventually anyone of them is found wanting at the end of the investigation then we will look at the scripture. As it is now we see both the accuser and the accused innocent until anyone of the is found wanting. “The lady also may be found guilty. As much as we frown at sin, we should not easily condemn people when it is not legally proved. That is the position of CAN and the church.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/coza-investigating-team-will-unravel-hidden-issues-can/

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State has approved the immediate release of N350 million for the completion of the new Secretariat Complex in Ilorin. Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye said this in a statement on Wednesday in Ilorin. That would leave them with the (third payment) retention fee of N34 million after six months,” Ajakaye added. He said the governor was concerned that some of the state’s civil servants were still in rented office accommodation, 52 years after Kwara was created. The new secretariat complex is made up of four blocks with each of the blocks having 76 office spaces. Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, on Tuesday said the Federal Government should cancel RUGA program, rather than suspending it. Speaking with reporters at the Government House, Jalingo, Ishaku said the scheme was a form of colonialism and that its suspension was not enough, as it still raises suspicion. “Ranching is the best modern practice of breeding cattle and solving the farmers/herders conflicts,” he said. Lau, Zing, Ibi and Sarduana local government areas of the state had been earmarked for Ruga. But the protests in many states, including Benue and Taraba, as well as outrage from well-meaning individuals, informed the scheme’s suspension. He said some youths in the state had described the scheme as a threat to tribes in Taraba state and the nation at large, adding that herdsmen troubling the state were aliens with an ulterior motive to grab the lands of the original inhabitants. Ishaku, who officially kicked against the suspended scheme said “Ruga is colonialism; it is not about cattle; it is not even about grasses. It should not only be suspended but should also be cancelled completely. “The whole Ruga scheme should be cancelled. You can’t do a Ruga in the entire country. I don’t accept it. It is not workable, and it will not work in Taraba state. “Already, I have in place the Anti-Open Grazing Law in Taraba state that prohibits open grazing but encourages ranching. And we are making a lot of progress on ranching. “I have submitted a request to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for us (Taraba) to be given a loan for us to do the ranching, but the CBN has refused to approve it, for reasons I don’t know. “Otherwise, I would have showcased what ranching is in the state. It is the best form of practice in modern days, if indeed you are talking about cattle, grasses and grazing. “But I don’t think the federal government are talking about cattle; I don’t agree that they are talking about grasses. They are talking about something else: colonisation,” he said. Read more here https://thickmatch.com/gov-ishaku-insists-ruga-cancellation-calls-scheme-colonialism/

The Senate, on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to ban the production, importation or circulation of snipers insecticide, a product currently being used to commit suicide. This followed a motion sponsored by Sen. Theodore Orji (PDP-Abia) and 15 others on the rising incidence of suicides among Nigerians. NAN reports that Orji, while making his presentation noted with grave concern, the rising cases of suicide, particularly among young Nigerians. He said suicide could be prevented particularly when family, friends and close relatives of the person contemplating suicide provided support, either by way of encouragement, listening to them or removing means of committing suicide such as dangerous drugs and chemicals especially sniper. He also said that it is worrisome that the number of Nigerians taking their lives had assumed a frightening dimension, saying that government, religious institutions and other relevant corporate bodies have not addressed the ugly situation in the country. He said the situation may continue, if not properly addressed. Orji said that there was need to create awareness on how to control stress and depression by government, religious institutions and other relevant corporate bodies and the establishment of trauma centres across the federation. This,he said would also reduce the rate of suicide in the country. Contributing , Sen. Bamidela Opeyemi (Ekiti) said the issue of suicide was more of a sociological issue that has to do with depression, mental issues and ultimately poverty. He said the Senate must interface with the executive to address the challenges in the economy by creating opportunities for employment via industrialisation and agriculture. Contributing, Sen. Rochas Okorocha (APC-Imo) said many Nigerians were committing suicide because they were not happy. He said the government should find out why people were not happy and why they were talking their lives. Okorocha, therefore advocated for the creation of a government Department or Ministry of Happiness to address the problem. Adopting the motion, the Senate also urged the federal government through the Ministry of Information, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Ministry of Health to create awareness on how to control stress and depression. Former Super Eagles captain, Jay Jay Okocha, has said the team with the right mindset will emerge victorious, when Nigeria take on South Africa in the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday. Nigeria are yet to defeat South Africa in their last five outings, which ended in four draws and one defeat against Bafana Bafana. Okocha is however not bothered by the recent head-to-head results and thinks the game will be decided by the players’ performances on match day. “I think it’s always easier to sit on the outside and act as if you have the best solution. But I’ve played the game at the highest level and I can tell you my opinion. “You can come up with whatever tactics you want as a coach but if you don’t have the tools to execute you will struggle, and if you don’t have willing players that are ready to commit to the cause than you will struggle. “I think it’s all about the players’ mindset on the day and the team that wants it more,” Okocha told Goal.
