he scarcity of petroleum products has worsened on its fifth day in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, even as economic, social and political activities are grounded ar the weekend. Passengers and other commuters in the metropolis were stranded as workers, traders and other businessmen and women, as well as Christians, could not board vehicles to their various destinations. According to our correspondent, who visited some fuel stations in the Cross River State capital, observed that the gates of the stations remained closed as they have no fuel for customers. However, few stations that have the products, recorded long queues with a litre of petrol going for over 100% increase (N300 per litre). Fuel at the black market (unauthorised selling points) sold at N400-N500 per litre. Similarly, fuel in Odukpani, Akpabuyo, Akamkpa, Biase and Yakurr local government areas was also not available. It was gathered that filling stations in these local government areas had fuel last on Friday. A customer, George Akpan, said, “Last time I bought fuel was on Thursday at the cost of N145 a litre but it’s now N300-N350 or more per litre. Black marketers sold it at N350-N400 a litre. “The scarcity of the product has already caused untold hardship on the residents of the city. It has taken a more dangerous dimension now, especially at this weekend ” Mr Nakanda Udobong said that the increase has affected the economy of the state as the prices of food stuff have increase tremendously. The cause of transportations, he said, has gone up by 150%. A distance of N50 now goes for N150 or more, “Already, the cost of transportation from one point to another has increase tremendously,” he stated. Udobong, resident of Calabar South, lamented, “The reason for the scarcity has not been known but we want federal government and President Buhari to intervene urgently so that Nigerians would have blissful week ahead”. Sadly, the prices of garri and rice, the most stable foods for people of the state, have gone up by 100-200 per cent. More importantly, the scarcity of the product not only hindered economic growth but has caused inconveniences as the long queues hindered traffic flow in the city making some streets impassable. Also speaking, Chief Eyo Okon said that the scarcity has affected economic activities in the state. “People were seen roaming various filling stations in the state looking for the products that are no where to be found or available to buy.” Meanwhile, the fuel scarcity has spread to central and northern districts of Cross River State. The current fuel scarcity may not be unconnected with the state leadership tussle in IPMAN. The Chairman of IPMAN, Mr. Edet Umana, who was recently inaugurated by the National President of the association in Calabar, Elder Chinedu Okoronkwo, said despite a judgment of the Supreme Court confirming Okoronkwo and by extension all the state executives put in place by him, a Federal High Court in Calabar had given an order defying the Supreme Court. Umana said the Calabar Federal High Court order of June 19, 2019, which dictated that the national officers of the party be removed, had emboldened a faction of IPMAN refusing to recognize his authority. The faction has gone around to close fuel stations in Calabar, just as tanker drivers loyal to their faction, refused to lift products at the depot. “The judgment they secured here undermines the subsisting judgment of the Supreme Court and what we are saying is that they must obey the Supreme Court judgment. What they are doing is illegal and you can see the people are suffering,” Umana said. An independent marketer in Calabar, Dr Okechukwu Uwazie, the Managing Director of Uwasco oil Nigeria limited, who spoke on the situation, said, “By the virtue of our position we are law abiding citizens. What is going on is that some people form a group claiming they want to hijack this oil business. “I am surprised that if the Supreme Court has given ruling since December 14, last year in a case they took us to court. Why won’t they be law-abiding citizens? Why should they not vacate the office? Why are they not law abiding citizens? Why are they now putting this crisis? “Mr Edet Umana is now the chairman by Elder Chinedu Okoronkwo government and the order of the Supreme Court. This is my first time of hearing that Supreme Court will give judgment and you will come to a lower court to seek for interpretation,” he said. Cameroon, the last African country standing at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, have been eliminated following a 3-0 defeat to England on Sunday. The English ladies, who won all three group stage fixtures, completely dominated the Indomitable Lionesses. Steph Houghton opened scoring from an indirect free-kick before Ellen White made it 2-0 late into added time in the first half. Cameroon came out for the second half and pulled a goal back which was cancelled for offside before England sealed victory. This result means that all three African representatives at the tournament have now quit the tournament. Just yesterday, Nigeria lost 3-0 to Germany in a one-sided affair. Associates of former Akwa Ibom State Governor Senator Godswill Akpabio have warned his opponents against making unfounded and unguided statements against the former Senate Minority Leader. The associates, who fingered members of the Ibom Integrity and Servant Leadership Culture Group Initiative for alleged plots to stop Akpabio’s ministerial appointment, warned that all evil plots against him would fail. They urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to deal with those engaging in activities inimical to the growth of the party in Akwa Ibom. A statement by Cyril Gabriel Essien and Comrade Emmanuel Amama accused the group of “hatred for the APC and acting a script to see it fail”. The statement reads: “One can only see that the members of this self-acclaimed integrity group hate the party to its marrow. To a discerning mind, they and their cohorts have grumbled for a long time, and have now exposed themselves as those who worked against the interest of the APC in Akwa Ibom State. “We pray they come out in the open wherever they are hiding; let them expose themselves as the Akwa Ibom chapter of the group has done. “They are opposition members in APC garments. If the opposition had won the presidential election, one would not be surprised to see them being offered a ministerial slot. “We know that the party will follow the recent Zamfara example for those discovered to be agents of antiparty activities. They should be brought to book.” See more here https://thickmatch.com/fighting-akpabio-will-fail/

A Kogi High Court sitting in Koton-Karfe on Friday indicted a legal practitioner, Mr Adetunji Oso, for unethical and unprofessional conduct during court proceedings. NAN reports that Justice Alaba Omolaye-Ajileye, inflicted Oso, while delivering judgment in the suit filed by the state Chief Judge, Justice Nasir Ajanah and Chief Registrar of the High Court, Yahaya Adamu against Gov. Yahaya Bello, Kogi House of Assembly and three others. Omolaye-Ajileye held that Oso, from the chambers of Chief A.A. Adeniyi & Co. and counsel to governor Bello in the case, behaved in an unprofessional manner. ”The gravity of the misbehaviour of Oso, in the face of the court, made it expedient that the matter should not only be put on record for future references but attract the attention of the leadership of the Bar and the Bench. ”There is need for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and the Body of Benchers to take appropriate action in order to preserve the integrity of the court system. The Jurist stated, “the genesis of the unfortunate incident was an oral application on Friday, June 14, in which Mr Oso informed me of a pending application for a stay of proceedings in this case, pending before the Court of Appeal, Abuja. “I said there was no such application made before this court and he strenuously argued that I could no longer proceed with this case. “Mr Oso argued that because he had informed the court of the pending application, the court must not proceed with the case slated for definite hearing on that day. “The response of the opposing counsel, A. M. Aliyu (SAN), was taken and a ruling on the point rendered, in which I overruled Mr Oso on that point and directed that the case should proceed to hearing. “Upon being over-ruled, Mr Oso announced to the court that he was recusing himself from the case and in a most defiant, disrespectful and impudent manner, unbecoming of a Legal Practitioner, he walked out on the court. “He thereby eviscerates the dignity and integrity of this court in the eyes of the public. The action of Mr Oso is most unprofessional and condemnable. It is unequivocally, a breach of the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC). “As an integral participant in the administration of justice, I suppose, a lawyer’s paramount duty is to the court and the Rule of Law. “He must avoid doing anything that may have the effect of diminishing court’s authority or ridiculing the aura of respectability it commands and enjoys”, he said. Justice Omolaye-Ajileye explained that, as a Judge, he was duty-bound to enforce high standards of conduct of legal practitioners that appeared before him. Accordingly, he directed the Registrar of the court to make copies of the judgment and the proceedings of June 14, available to the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), chairman Body of Benchers and the President, NBA for their notification. Barcelona have reportedly made a huge offer to lure Neymar from PSG - including Philippe Coutinho going in the other direction. Neymar wants to leave the French capital and came in for stinging criticism from president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Barca are keen on a return for the Brazilian after selling him to PSG for a world-record £199million two years ago. And they are willing to send his countryman Coutinho plus £90million in the other direction, according to Spanish publication Sport. The two clubs are seemingly already in negotiations over the deal' - with the Parisians reportedly asking for around £270million off the bat. But Barca have now returned with the proposal involving Coutinho - who has endured a tumultuous campaign at the Nou Camp. The former Liverpool midfielder copped plentiful criticism from fans at the Catalan giants for his displays over the course of the campaign. Coutinho made the move to Barca in January 2018 for a deal worth £105million, potentially rising to £142million. Manchester United and Liverpool have been tentatively linked with swoops for his services, but PSG would now seem more likely to be his next destination, especially if Neymar moves in the other direction. Meanwhile, Real Madrid will not be making a move a move for Neymar, according to the same publication, leaving the path clear for Barca to secure a return. Africa's showpiece tournament is right around the corner and in preparation, we have compiled a combined best XI and a bench that could definitely give the world's best a run for their money. The central midfield and attacking areas are particularly strong with Thomas Partey settling for a substitute's role. With Joel Matip not in the fold for Cameroon, who takes his place in the heart of the defence? Here goes! We've selected a 4-2-3-1 and a talented bench of seven substitutes. Bear in mind that we have selected players that have featured prominently for their club's first team wherever possible. Who makes your team and who gets axed? GK: Andre Onana (Cameroon) The Cameroonian stopper came through the Barcelona ranks but was allowed to slip through the cracks. The 23-year-old has been outstanding for Ajax this season and made outstanding saves in their memorable semifinal clash in the Champions League against Tottenham. There might well be a high-cost auction for his signature come the transfer window. RB: Serge Aurier (Ivory Coast) The Tottenham full back was a part of the team that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015. He left Paris Saint-Germain for Spurs two years later in 2017, but isn't exactly a fan favourite in north London and played just 17 times all season in 2018/19. However, he is still a top-level, experienced right back in the prime of his career at 26. CB: Mehdi Benatia (Morocco) Benatia has had a somewhat nomadic career but with clubs like Roma, Bayern Munich and Juventus under his belt, he's one of the most experienced centre halves at the tournament. Alongside Hakimi and Wolves star Romain Saiss, Morocco have the pick of the tournament's defences. CB: Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal) K2, his nickname because of his imposing height, has attracted interest from clubs around Europe for the past few seasons. Napoli's second-place finish in Serie A this season has been in part down to Koulibaly's excellence and consistency. He's made 34 starts in 36 league outings and has become composed on the ball, an area that he has developed in the last few years, to supplement his aerial dominance and aggression. The complete package defender. RB: Achraf Hakimi (Morroco) On-loan from Real Madrid, the 20-year-old Moroccan is highly regarded around Europe for his versatility and it's not hard to see why. He's got two goals and seven assists this season for the German side in all competitions this season, from an unfamiliar left-back role. His natural right back position is where he slots in here, and watch out for him next season where he will be staking a claim for Dani Carvajal's right back spot at Real. CM: Thomas Partey (Ghana) 26-year-old Partey is the quintessential Diego Simeone player, tough and relentlessly hard-working. A defensive midfielder with Atletico Madrid, he often plays a more advanced role for his country and has seven goals in 17 appearances, since his debut in 2016. CM: Naby Keita (Guinea) Keita's big money move to Liverpool hasn't exactly worked out as many expected just yet. However, he had begun to show glimpses of his best form before injury ruled him out of the Reds' run-in. A dynamic all-action engine-room star, Keita made the Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2017 and the CAF Team of the Year in 2018. CM: Hakim Ziyech (Morocco) Moroccan star Ziyech stunned the world with his tally of 19 goals & 15 assists across all competitions this season, and he was the driving creative force behind Ajax's amazing season. It's unlikely that he will be at the Dutch club next season, with offers for his services streaming in from all quarters. But no one will ever forget his silky combinations with fellow left-footer Dusan Tadic and that improvised strike against Spurs after another typically flowing Ajax team move. One wonders where Ziyech will be playing his club football next season. CF: Mohamed Salah (Egypt) Last season's Premier League player of the year had a slow start to 2018/2019 but he ended up as a joint-winner of the Golden Boot with 22 goals, sharing the award with two other African stars also in this team. Salah scored memorably against Chelsea in the Premier League and is a popular figure in the dressing room at Anfield. Mo Salah is now a Champions League winner with Liverpool and he netted in the opening stages of the final. RW: Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) The 2016 PFA Player of the Year hasn't hit the heights of three years ago when he spearheaded Leicester's fairytale charge to the Premier League crown, but he remains a highly dependable operator and a man often selected by Pep Guardiola in big games for Manchester City. We've selected him here on the left, despite his preferred position being off the right flank to cut in with that wand of a left foot. Mahrez should be fit and raring to go and that's bad news for Algeria's opponents in Group C namely Kenya, Senegal & Tanzania. It looks like a group of death. LW: Sadio Mane (Senegal) Arguably Liverpool's most important attacker this season, Senegalese star Mane has knitted it all together in 2018/2019 and become the complete package. Often a lack of consistency would be one criticism levelled at the wide man, but his 22 goals this season have earned him the Golden Boot in England and the respect of many defenders. He's also now another African Champions League winner and there's no wonder Real Madrid is rumoured to have registered an interest in the scintillating Senegalese star. Combined XI Substitutes bench Dennis Onyango (Uganda) Kwadwo Asamoah (Ghana) Victor Wanyama (Kenya) Wilfried Zaha (Ivory Coast) Idrissa Gueye (Senegal) Nicolas Pépé (Ivory Coast) Mbwana Samatta (Tanzania) What do you think of the team, Nairaland/thickmatch managers? The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors Forum on Tuesday disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to discuss ministerial lists with them. But they maintained the matter of a cabinet for the President’s second term was purely the President’s decision. The President, the Forum said, should appoint whosoever he wishes. President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday urged universities to intensify efforts at making discoveries and inventions that can assist the development of the country. Buhari made the call in Dutsinma, Katsina State, in a goodwill message to the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsinma (FUDMA). Represented by Professor Hafiz Abubakar, the former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Buhari said that part of the speech would serve as a wake-up call to the nation’s universities. “Research, critical thinking, moral dispositions, discoveries and inventions should find natural habitats in our universities, as they do in several other universities in the world. “Universities are supposed to be strong drivers of the country’s development initiatives for sustainable development,” he said. He challenged the universities for being slow in aspects of discoveries and inventions. “It is not heart-warming that in our over 58 years of independence, Nigerian universities are slow in discoveries and inventions,” he said. He, however, said that his administration would continue to do everything possible to improve structures and facilities in the institutions, and to enhance learning by training the required manpower through various interventions like TETFUND. Buhari also urged FUDMA to partner with Sokoto River Basin Development Authority to produce improved agricultural varieties and give the required scientific and extension support to the local farmers. The rift between National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Governor Godwin Obaseki appeared deepened as the lawmakers-elect for the Edo State House of Assembly rejected nomination for the House leadership by the State Executive Committee of the APC. Three lawmakers-elect from Edo Central Senatorial district are in the race for the position of the Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly. They are Frank Okiye (Esan North East 1) Emmanuel Okoduwa (Esan North East 11) and Victor Edoror (Esan Central). A meeting between the state leadership of the APC and the lawmakers-elect ended in deadlock as the lawmakers-elect insisted on not abiding by the decision of the party. Sources said the Edo APC stuck to Hon Frank Okiye as the Speaker but the lawmakers-elect rejected the proposal on ground that they should be given the independence to choose their leaders during plenary. The source said the lawmakers-elect argued that they would not allow Governor Obaseki pick their leaders for them. Another source said what the lawmakers-elect demanded was just proclamation letter from the governor. A chieftain of the party who pleaded anonymity said the lawmakers-elect were asked to go and choose their leaders based on zoning arrangement of the party. According to the source, the Speakership seat was zoned to Edo Central, Deputy Speaker’s and Deputy Whip seat were zoned to Owan Federal Constituency while the Chief Whip seat was zoned to Edo South. Keyamo who was Buhari’s agent at the collation centre disputezd the Mission’s claim that the collation of the election results was not transparent enough. According to him, “There are aspects of the report that are not definitive enough. For instance, if they say the result collation process is not transparent enough, I expect them to be very clear as to what they expect to happen over and above or beyond what we have in the Electoral Act currently. “I can see that they expect that result from each unit is made known and published. However, you can see that the Electoral Act allows for the Form EC8A from each of the polling units to be given to agents of the political parties. “They did agree that those results came from agents of the political parties; they did not see any place where party agents were denied copies of Form EC8As. “Again, the Electoral Act allows for the Form EC8A to be pasted at each polling unit. Pasting is publication if you didn’t know. “So this Form EC8A was published in each of the polling units, so I don’t want Nigerians to go away with the impression that those results from each polling unit were not published. “The only thing that I may agree with their report is that they want it to be centrally published on INEC website. “I do agree but there is no mechanism to automatically publish it now because there is no provision for automatic electronic transmission of results and this is the crux of this election. “There is no provision for that and I expected them to talk about that a lot in their recommendations. “They should have dwelt on the crux of our election now which is electronic transmission. They know that that system collapsed in Kenya so we should not be quick to jump and follow the world when we know that technologically we are not ripe for that yet. “As for us, we knew that the opposition was only banking on that; we knew they were just banking on waiting in Abuja, hacking into a server if it was available, planting a result and declaring a winner. “But it doesn’t work out that way because there must be state by state collation of results Secondly, and most importantly, the EUROM failed to discuss the report of other observers. These were local observers, regional observers, continental who came to the conclusion that despite these hiccups here and there, the results reflected the wishes of the generality of Nigerians. “If you are an observer, you must be definitive in your report. There is no need being dodgy about it because we have 120,000 polling units across the country. In all the reports, I don’t think they discussed more than two polling units.” Read more here https://thickmatch.com/apc-eu-report-not-definitive/
