TEXT OF ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT’S NYSC HONOURS AWARDEES DURING THE OCCASION OF THE WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE DELIVERDE BY THE ASSOCIATION’S PRESIDENT MRS, JEGEDE IMMUMONI SUZANNE ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2018. Gentlemen of the press, executive members of the association, fellow distinguished awardees; it is an Honour for me to welcome you to this press briefing that has been put together by the leadership of this association to address the media and the Federal Government on some salient issues. 2. The theme of this press briefing is: “DISREGARD FOR PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE AS REGARDS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NYSC PRESIDENT’S HONOURS AWARDEES’ SCHOLARSHIP” 3. INTRODUCTION: The President’s NYSC National Honours Award is a statutory award designed to reward excellence amongst young persons who have been adjudged remarkably outstanding during the mandatory service year via Community Development Service (CDS) and other programmes of the scheme. The award which is conferred annually by the President and Commander- in- Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is undoubtedly, the highest award conferred on young Nigerians in the country. 4. The association is a non-political, non-religious body that is primarily aimed at fostering National Development in Nigeria, which has its membership opened to all persons conferred with the Award. 5. OUR MISSION is to; sustain the spirit of hard work by way of identifying peculiar needs in various Nigerian communities, source for funds to meet such needs in form of Community Development Project for a better Nigeria. OUR VISION is; reaching out to the nooks and crannies of the society through Community development Services. 6. In line with the Federal Government’s policy of rewarding hard work, Excellence, leadership skills and exemplary qualities for outstanding NYSC Corps members who distinguished themselves during the mandatory one year National Youth Service, the Government in 2010, 2011 and 2015 awarded a post-Graduate scholarship to awardees. 7. It is a scholarship to study for Masters and PhD in any university in the world. The Federal Government gesture was aimed at building capacity for the youth, in the best institutions of their choice so that the distinguished awardees could use same knowledge for Nation Building, having shown such attitude through their selfless service to fatherland. 8. In 2015, a combined Award of 2012, 2013 and 2014, 164 Ex-Corps members who were painstakingly selected out of over 600, 000 Corps Members conferred with the Award. Consequently upon, the Petroleum Trust Development Fund PTDF selected 74 awardees for Masters and Ph.D Degrees, while they had completed Masters Degrees programmes and are currently running PhD Courses in Various Universities Overseas, 90 Awardees have been deliberately abandoned by the supposed Government agencies that are tasked to sponsor them. 9. Following series of agitation by the abandoned 90 awardees to secure justice by receiving their sponsorship letters and funding like their PTDF counterparts, who are fully enjoying the scholarship Award, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR ordered that Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), PTDF, NIMASA and Federal Scholarship Board should create a dedicated funding line and Sponsor the scholarship with immediate effect, as according to him, Time and Justice are of essence. 10. Since June 2016 when President Buhari issued the Order, the Various Agencies defiled the Directive as they all turned deaf ears to the presidential mandate. The affected awardees have lost Hundreds of thousands of their hard earned money in securing and losing admissions overseas, as well as struggle for the pursue of justice over what we feel as a clear display of “Nobodysm” meted on the awardees, who seem to lack a voice that will speak for them in this dilemma. 11. Gentlemen of the press, it may interest you to know that thousands of Nigerians have been leaving the Shores of this country yearly since then for overseas scholarship, most of whom are selected on recommendation from “people at the top” while these selfless youths who knew nobody but were so honoured for their hard work and excellence by an independent National selection committee, after a careful examination and consideration are ignored even after a presidential directive was issued. It is worrisome that that a P[residential directive which is tantamount to an order could be blatantly disregarded by the Agencies that Mr. President directly appoint their chief Executive. This gross act of insubordination negatively portray’s the Nation negatively locally and internationally. 12. The Chairman, senate committee on Youths and sports directed that the Federal Scholarship Board (FSB) should submit a budget draft to the National Assembly to work on, so as to clear all Categories of Awardees, but the Director of Federal Scholarship Board only worked on the Budget of 2010/2011 affected scholars and refused to submit that of 2012, 2013, 2014 awardees. We believe that the refusal by the Director to carry out the president’s Mandate and that of the senate president’s is a calculated attempt to thwart the process. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Petroleum Development Training Fund (PTDF) were to provide funds for this Scholarship Scheme while the National Universities Commission (NUC) was to act as the clearing house for the scholars under Tetfund. 13. Elsewhere, we have identified three main groups who have similar experiences of abandonment under disparate conditions and at different stages. In the first group, we have 16 NYSC scholars who resumed their PhD programmes at universities in the United Kingdom and the United States of America in 2014. Reports show that despite the full remittance of their funds to the National Universities Commission by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), covering their tuition, living expenses and travel fees for four years, it is unfortunate that these scholars are currently stranded abroad with a backlog of unpaid tuitions and living expenses ranging from 1 to 2 years. 14. All efforts to recover their funds have been futile. News published in the Nation Newspaper on 8th February, 2018 (pages 22&23) provides concrete evidence of the official transactions between Tetfund and NUC in a letter signed by one Mr Chris Maiyaki, who was the Director of Protocol and Special Duties of the NUC at the time but currently the Director of the Executive Secretary’s Office. These scholars are faced with survival crises as they have been surviving on menial jobs. They currently risk withdrawal and deportation back to Nigeria as a consequence, if their outstanding tuition fees and living expenses are not paid in earnest. 15. The second group of 11 awardees started their PhDs in 2015. They are also stranded in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Their tuition fees and living expenses have not been paid for over 2 years. The scholars in this category have written to the Senate which led to the consideration of their plight as a matter of National emergency. However, their problems remain unresolved. This has led to untold hardship for these scholars who are still struggling to fend for their families, house rents and school fees without approved fund from Tetfund, while reports reaching us daily suggest that there is a need for the intervention of Mr President to come to the aid of these scholars. We appeal to the Federal Government/ funding agencies to reach out to their respective Universities for reassurances regarding the payment of their fees and allowances. 16. CONCLUSION We believe in the bullet effect of the Mass Media and the role of Journalists as the watchdogs of the society and the voice of the Voiceless. Therefore we seek the intervention of the federal government and relevant stakeholders to address the ugly development and also call the attention of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) to answer questions regarding the disregard to the Presidential order. 17. OUR PRAYERS We urged the present administration to effect the following: That letters of scholarship be released to the 90 awardees yet to be sponsored because their scholarship has been approved even by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari since June 2016. The President May wish to order Various Agencies such as NPA, NIMASSA, PTDF an FSB to Urgently Act on his earlier directive by this Year’s academic calendar. iii. We call on Mr President to please direct Professor Abdulrasheed Abubakar, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission to pay all the outstanding dues and fees of our stranded colleagues abroad immediately. Vi. That Mr President should intervene in expediting the payment of the tuition fees and living expenses of the 11 scholars who are already studying for their PhDs in the United Kingdom and United States. V. That Mr. President should direct the appropriate MDAs to resolve the uncertainties surrounding the funding of Masters and PhDs of the other awardees whose scholarships have been approved by the present administration. Thank you. |

The 2014 President's NYSC Honours Awardees conducted a free medical outreach to Wassa IDP camp, FCT- Abuja today Saturday the 29th day of August 2015, serving corps members-Medical & Health CDS group were in attendance. The Program was well-intentioned and conducted successfully. Programs like this outreach are not new to us as ex corps members because the NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) afforded us the opportunity to apply our cognitive skills, learning and resources to the betterment of our host communities, this has been the bedrock of our achievements. The program was scheduled & carried out as follows:- We arrived Bassa IDP Camp at about 0900hrs, the colonies were mobilised and triaged, preference was given to Pregnant women and nursing mothers, focused ante-natal service was offered including routine antenatal laboratory investigations, counselling on care in pregnancy, safe/supervised delivery and lactation/infant care. Point of care diagnostic investigations like Rapid Malaria test and HIV screening was also offered with subsequent dispensing of prescribed medications at the Pharmacy point at absolutely no cost for the IDPs. Those with eye problems were sent to the Optometry unit for eye examination, those diagnosed with errors were given corrective lenses. Children on the other hand who are a vulnerable group were engaged in a fun-filled social interaction to enhance their social well being, there after they were taught simple self and environmental hygiene, they were also offered free books and writing materials. Others with peculiar needs as per diagnostic and laboratory findings were placed on treatment and had their drugs dispensed. Relief items such as mosquito nets, cartons of Noodles, bags of rice, bags of sugar, bags of garri and wheat among others, were also donated to them. Lastly, a mini clinic was set up for them which is to be manned by the community health extension worker domiciled in the community. The program ended at about 1500hrs. Our esteemed collaborators and supporters for the program were; NYSC FCT, Society for Family Health, Book my School, FEMA, NEMA and the media viz; ITV, Radio Nigeria, Raypower & Luv Fm. We deeply appreciate our collaborating agencies and all those who worked towards the success of the event. We are personally moved by the plight of the IDPs and going by our motto 'we care', we call on other well meaning Nigerians both in the public and private sectors to share in our foresight 'we care' and come together to assist this vulnerable portion of the society, they deserve our collective inputs in improving their living conditions and ultimately resettling and integrating them back to their communities. Hey Peeps Havn read all ur comments here. Here is my take. I did abt 8 proj & i happn 2b lucky & in good termz wit my ZI. He guided me wit tips and coupled wit the xperience i got frm an ex-awardee corps member, i waz able to beat the challenge. Frm wat i gathered, the selection process is being done/Salection based on category 1. Education 2. Health 3. Empowerment 4. Infrastructure & so on Then ur personal qualities such as 1. Sense of Leadership 2. Emotional poise 3. Ability to raise/source for funds 4. Skills & so on Mind you there are assessment forms frm camp & also service period evn thou this does nt really affect your score Another factor is your REPORT- Proper report shld be done & accurate pictorial evidences clearly shwn in a self explanatory manner. Your CDS activity should be well covered & included in your report. Recommendation letters should be collected from all the Sector/Institution affected & attached in the report Incase of any purchase, receipt should also be attached to the report Incase of any publication, kindly attach a copy of the page. Make sure that all the projects applied for haz all been executed. Lastly, ensure that at-least in 2/3 of your projects, someone from NYSC or an invited guest is there to witness it & photos should be taken & included in the report. Dont wanna ryt mch actually but alwyz hv the intention of transforming peoples lives & the award will surely come. I never tot i could until when i did. I remember a community hospital i donated some basic materials to. These people were grateful to the extent that i had 2cry.....They do call me & sends text messages 2me with alot of well wishes uptil 2dae. In my own batch, the 1st position was nt called for the Presidential award & i waz the 2nd Best. He build a giant cybercafe & well equipped in the Governors home twn, sponsored by the emir....which is a project under EDUCATION alone & it earned him 1st position in the state award. I hope this helps....... |

Sir, NOW I KNOW IT IS TOO LATE FOR YOU With so much pressure mounted on me by the Nigeria and International media do I write to you once again before the year end. May I let you know that I received your letter, even though addressed to me, but was read first before me by the public through the media. Even the attempt by your Media S.A to use my daughter against me was also gotten. I do not have issues with since you claimed mine never got to you first before the media published. Mr President, in less than eleven hours from now, you and I will be shouting ‘Happy New Year’ and will even exchange text messages and call each other, but I have deemed it fit to send you this last message before you and I will shout the ritual shouts of joy. It doesn’t end there that the new year is very close, but it’s also my pleasure to tell you that in less than 70 days of 2014, I will be 77 years, a year which crossed the biblical three scores and ten, and thus should not be afraid to speak the truth even if it hurts. And you may not easily remember this, but 2014 will make you 57 years of age, a year which you were born-1957. From all available calculations, I am older than you with 20 years, an age ripe enough to father you; hence this letter is like a message from a father to a son and not as an ex-president to a sitting president like you alluded in your reply to me. Be that as it may, your reply jolted me back to reality that I made a mistake in the title of my last letter to you – ‘Before it is too late’. I just realized that it is already too late for you to make amends. Very few leaders make positive things happen within two years of leadership and you are obviously not in that category, as you have less than fifteen months to hand over the baton, except you wish to contest again, which will be a breach of the personal vow you made not to run. Let your conscience be your judge on that. I wish to now answer the posers you raised in your reply to me. Joe, you raised the issue of Boko Haram ravaging the North East being ravaged by terrorists and insurgents; and haven cross checked the eight years I ruled as President, there was no such record of such happening in my regime. A pilot has a co-pilot incase the plane is drifting afar and you were the co-pilot when late President Musa Yaradua held sway, and Boko Haram reared their ugly head which your regime has now made beautiful. Mr President, I wish to know like many Nigerians what advise you gave to your boss to stem the tide then, in private or during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings. To put the blame of Boko Hara solely on Yaradua will be a great disservice to his memory. As a matter of fact, Boko Haram was not prominent during Yaradua’s regime; rather your kinsmen from the creek who termed themselves militants were the ones having a field day. It is these militants that your former boss dealt with which has caused us the current peace we enjoy in the Niger Delta as well as more inflow of cash which your Minister of Petroleum has turned to her personal fiefdom today, awarding contracts to her cronies, while she plans to sell of the refineries to them with your able connivance. If Yaradua could solve a problem in your region, it will be more honorable for you to do so to his region; that is what my people in Yoruba term as a fight of the dogs. As you admitted in your letter that I advised you to use the carrot and stick approach, I still maintain you do so. I regret to say that your approach has not been sincere enough. You mentioned my military tactics against Odi, stating that it never yielded the desired result. Mr President, my invasion of Odi remains the best strategy to have used then, considering the fact that we were just entering democracy and all insurgence has to be quenched immediately. If I were to take the same decision again, I will take same and I have no regret in what I did. You referred to the attack on you in 2007 and I begin to wonder who was in control then. You were the Governor and had all the apparatus of state to effect arrest; even to apprehend innocent citizens and term them suspects were within your power, thus I see no reason why such should even come up in your letter. I had my faults during my tenure but I never laid blames on the past leadership. For you to write that kidnapping and armed robbery began long before you became President is totally untenable. May I also remind your Excellency that I was not also the President then, but I didn’t complain. My job was to reposition while yours is to consolidate, and to the best of my conscience; I repositioned the country to the path of democratic rule where the Soldiers have been perpetually kept in the barrack. You claimed that I am aware of prosecuted corrupt officials by this regime, but I am sorry to say that I am completely ignorant of any corrupt public officials that you have jailed. They are not hidden Mr President, as they abound around you. What is Stella Oduah still doing in the Aviation Industry if truly you are prosecuting them? Why is Diezani Alison Madueke still doing her beauty pageant show close to the Oil sector if you mean your war against corruption? Do I need to mention your Attorney General, Education Minister or the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs amongst sundry others? It is no longer news that the EFCC has become a toothless bulldog under your watch. I may be accused of being selective in those they prosecuted but that is a tale peddled by the media by my then political opponents. Nigerians wish to see those selected corrupt few who will be jailed. Joe, I did not mince words when I wrote that you are sinking the ship of the PDP. Since your ascension to the throne of Aso Rock, our party fortune has nosedived. None of the governorship elections held under you has seen us coasting to victory; rather you dine with the opponents. It is my belief that you agreed with my letter on this, hence our party is standing solidly behind our candidate, Tony Nwoye, to challenge the Anambra guber election in court. I do know that it is all to the gallery as nothing good will come out of it. In PDP, rigging is the game and you cannot claim to be unaware of it. How did you get into power if we didn’t rig you in? Do I need to remind you that your home state which produced your ‘house boy’, Seriake Dickson was rigged? It makes no sense claiming a saint when you are a product of what you condemn. Your Excellency, the most virtuous prize for statesmen is honor. You did not just tell me that you will not contest the 2015 election, but told other governors. Before my letter was written to you, many governors have told the public that you made the pact with them to run for only one term. While it is your right to run again, I wish to remind you that at my age I will not lie, especially not against someone young enough to be my son, more so you are my protégé. It was you promise to me to lead for one term that made me announce to Nigerians that they should vote for you, as you have promised to run for one term. The video footage of the rally where that statement was made is still available for you to watch. Let me now be the liar before Nigerians, but let God be the judge. I do hope that in the coming year, you would have looked into the last letter I wrote to you and make amends, especially concerning our political fortunes. You have two chances to redeem the party from losing the 2015 election, which is to win the Ekiti and Osun States governorship election coming up in 2014. Mr President, your opponents in those states will be planning to rig as well, and it will be foolhardy for you to believe that mere going to present the flag to our candidate is enough to win the election. Remember that they are the incumbent, but also have a flash back that we did it in 2003 in four South West States with the exception of Lagos where we swept way the incumbent. I need not teach you the tactics, as you have practiced it already in your home state. Sir, snatch the victory in these two States and send a message for 2015; then let them approach the tribunal for court victory which if well played they can never get. Before the year ends again; I wish to apologise to Nigerians for imposing on them wrong Presidents who have not tasted what they voted for, and while it may be too late for you to make real positive impacts on the common man like we did with GSM, you can begin tackle one serious and pressing issue which will keep you in the minds of Nigerians for long; something tangible that they can see to forgive your numerous sins. They are easy people to handle and please with a forgiving spirit; this you and I know. As it has become customary, I will also leak this to the Press. The first one written to me by former EFCC Chairwoman, Waziri was leaked to Elombah.com and the next one was leaked to Premium Times, but for this I am yet to decide who will get it first. As you cross over to the New Year, Mr President, I wish you a more eventful New Year devoid of Occupy Nigeria. Please accept the assurance of my highest consideration to your office and warmest regard. These little things matter… SEGUNOLA OJASANBO (GCFR) Exclusive http:///UIT4lyg84v |

Every once in a while, Nigerian public figures are saying things that become history, unfortunately, sometimes bad and shameful history. Here is the list of the worst 10 quotes of the year 2013 in the descending order. 10) “I am the best rapper in Nigeria. If you have an opposing opinion, now is the best time to keep it to yourself” Rapper Yung6ix having his imagined Kendrick Lamar moment. Dear Yung6ix; make good music, put out an album, put your name out there. Maybe then we’ll take you seriously. 9) “Any academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4, 2013 automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution and vice chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies in their institutions.” This was stated by Nyesom Wike, the Education minister, in the middle of the lingering ASUU strike. This caused even more problems and deepened the crisis. Wike’s press conference during which he was screaming at the microphone and yelling threats became an instant visual manual for government officials on how not to act in public. “I was not a tribalist when I had a long-standing and intimate relationship with Miss Bianca Onoh, an Igbo lady…” Femi Fani Kayode, the former aviation minister and presidential spokesman, while he had so many disastrous statements, he got more than he bargained for when in defending himself against tribalism attacks, bizarrely claimed to have had a sizzling relationship with Bianca Ojukwu, widow of the late Biafran warlord. He was forced to recant when she threatened to sue him for every penny. 7) “We have stolen billions of dollars, what did you do? We steal because you never stoned us for it.” Governor Rotimi Amechi of Rivers state makes provocative statements one after after another. His latest one was dropped at a tribute event for Nelson Mandela some weeks back, and it was both an indictment on himself as it was on his docile followers. 6) “Come, sit on my laps and I will show you a level of grace you do not understand.” According to Ese Walters, repentant adultress and misguided victim, senior Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of the Commonwealth Of Zion Assembly must have been using these cringe worthy lines to score with wide-eyed members of his female congregation. The most surprising part of this line is that it actually works. His sweet roll came to an end when she published a tell all blog post revealing the pastor’s many sexcapades. Pastor Fatoyinbo is yet to deny Walters’ claims. And is yet to give that robust response. 5) “As the president, I don’t know him (Abu Shekau) and don’t know if he is dead or alive; you journalists will know more than us. You are the ones who talk to Boko Haram.” In a presidential media chat, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan pronounced the words never to be spoken by a country’s chief security officer. In denying the whereabouts (and maybe existence) of Abu Shekau, Boko Haram’s point man, Mr. President took the war on terror 10 steps back. 4) “Yes, Patience Jonathan is my Jesus Christ!” Now this would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. And true. Evans Bipi of the Rivers state house of assembly was speaking from the bottom of his heart when he declared dame Patience Jonathan (aka mama Peace) his deity as she was responsible for his political career so far. 3) “I cannot categorically tell you one now… the one we are going to make use of is going to be made known by my oga at the top…” Mr Obafaiye Shem, former Lagos state commandant of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps was asked a simple straight forward question by the hosts of Channels tv’s daily breakfast show. “What is the website of the NSCDC?” It became his undoing as he went on a rambling routine that did not produce the answer to the question but succeeded in shedding light on the pathetic state of affairs of our public institutions. 2) “We do not pray for accidents but it is inevitable… we do everything to ensure that we do not have accidents, but it is an act of God.” Stella Oduah, Aviation minister addressing journalists 3 days after 16 people lost their lives in the Associated airlines crash that was ferrying the remains of Olusegun Agagu, a former aviation minister. Of course, as it turned out, God had nothing to do with this particular crash as the Accident Investigation Bureau revealed that a malfunctioning engine and a wrong call by the pilot was most likely the cause. 1) “You are a widow… go and die” Oh dear! Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole became this year’s face of insensitivity when he was recorded on video, yelling at a poor widow displaying her wares illegally by the roadside to go and die. He later had tea with his victim and rewarded her generously but still, that image lingers. @EngrBakoji
