I stayed in Moremi hostel for 3 years and honors for a year in Unilag. It was never like this.

Female hostels in OAU weren't usually as bad as male hostels.
And even though Moremi was mostly for seniors so to speak, Moz wasn't so bad either.

But male hostels (Awo, Faj) was something else.
Though not all blocks.

The day my mum came to visit me in school, that was the last time I lived in AWO HALL. She made sure to prevail on my dad to get me an apartment off-campus.

She said she couldn't breathe properly. And was wondering if it's actually a hostel or a prison.

Being a student in Nigerian tertiary institution is like being a prisoner....

But all in all, there was fun. So many things were worth learning.

I am not here to take part in tribal bants. But most hostels in government universities are like that, my state included. Even in the FCT, at the university of Abuja, where they should have the best of the best, the hostels are awful...and inadequate. And I have seen UNILAG medical student hostels, and they look awful. I don't even want to look inside self.

This has been the issue for decades. Even when I was a child in the 1980's many hostels were already falling to bits (I am the son of now retired lecturers and essentially grew up on one of Nigeria's larger universities campus. I also am accuainted with University of Abuja as I live in the FCT ).

The palaver is that funding is not enough to improve hostels. But because most students in this country come from poor backgrounds, fee increases is not going to be popular. Even the student loan scheme of TInubu, while a 'good' idea...and it may even enable unis increase fees to meet the demand, just shifts debt to the student (and as seen in the USA, those debts can be albatrosses on the neck of students self).

This is not about your tribe being better than their tribe. It is a national disgrace.....and we should stop laughing and start thinkling solutions.

You're right. I lived in UNN back then and the hostels weren't different from when I went to OAUIfe and when I visited Ramat Poly in Maiduguri and Udus Sokoto.

Things must've changed now, but back then, difference no much.

Soyinka was born in Abk, but was Abk a city in the 30s?
My grand parents were also born in an obscure village and like OBJ, majority of those from that time were born in the village.
