Politics / Chatham-house Declaration, Forked Tongues And Our Security Catastrophe by haveadream: 8:36am On Feb 25, 2021 |
One of the things we should be VERY careful about is making promises, declaring what would be in future, threatening actions, and all that. Most often, these words and declarations stand in judgement against us when things do not turn out as we had said, especially, when this happens due to our faults. In this circumstance, we wish we could ‘go back yesterday’ to unsay what we had said. Some will just maintain boldfaces and carry on as if nothing is wrong. Others would deny what they had said, claim they were quoted out of context or deliberately misinterpreted by mischief-makers or make efforts to alter the narratives. In 2015, the then presidential aspirant, GMB spoke to the whole world from the mountain-top of Chatham House and said inter alia: ‘Boko Haram has sadly put Nigeria on the terrorism map, killing more than 13,000 of our nationals, displacing millions internally and externally, and at a time holding on to portions of our territory the size of Belgium. What has been consistently lacking is the required leadership in our battle against insurgency… our soldiers have received neither the necessary support nor the required incentives to tackle this problem… Let me assure you that if I am elected president… no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be lost to the enemy because… we will give them (soldiers) adequate and modern arms and ammunitions to work with, improve intelligence gathering and border controls to choke Boko Haram’s financial and equipment channels, we will be tough on terrorism and tough on its root causes…and I, Muhammadu Buhari, will always lead from the front and return Nigeria to its leadership role in regional and international efforts to combat terrorism. These were EMPHATIC statements by one who had sought power for years and appeared to know where he was headed to. Thanks to the unforgiving and unforgetting internet. The most worrisome is not what these vicious bands of terrorists do to us; it is the ‘forked-tongue’ tendencies by the government in these matters Before then, GMB, the politician had asked GEJ to vacate office for competent hands since he had failed in the security front while Prof Osinbajo had professorially and ‘SANically’ declared that failure to secure the citizenry was an impeachable offence. Now, that PMB has been the ‘oga at the top’ for 7years, the overall security situation has degenerated and become catastrophic and there are excuses and blame-trading all over the place; victims are being blamed and we are being told by body language that our security does not matter or does not matter as much of that of cows and their herders. As I write this, soldiers are being ordered to recover the territory taken over by Boko Haram in the Borno axis and the issue of adequate arms, and low morale of our soldiers still resonates (despite humongous sums expended without budgetary approval). In the recent past, Borno-based soldiers still lamented poor feeding, accusing their superiors of embezzlement. The Government has not followed the lead provided by Dubai when it convicted some Nigerians for financing BH nor learnt from Kenya, which froze the accounts of 9, publicly named, terrorist financiers. But the CBN speedily identified EndSARS financiers! Check our mainstream and online media daily and see how Nigerians are being decimated, dehumanized and pauperized (through the ransom-economy), with embarrassing impunity by BH, bandits, herdsmen and kidnappers (are they not all the same?). The most worrisome is not what these vicious bands of terrorists do to us; it is the ‘forked-tongue’ tendencies by the government in these matters, and the vigour with which our security forces deal with protesters, IPOBinas and other ‘trouble makers’. The records are uncountable and as such, I will just mention the major recent cases. November 2020 was a very bad one for the nation in terms of security. The blood-thirsty BH terrorists, who some of us defended when they were ‘on the other side’, boldly sauntered into our territory and beheaded 43, 78 or 110 hardworking farmers( no one is sure of the figures), who were driven by the urge to fend for themselves and contribute to National food security. The renegades were celebrating, contesting the figures given by the government, which as always, was shocked. Before long, they were at Kankara, where they kidnapped and motorcycled our students away. From Kankara, they moved on to Kagara where they seized our students and tied them (their human luggage) on their motorcycles, in pairs, and drove away unhindered and from there to Shiroro. One can imagine the number of motorcycles deployed in these operations and yet they came they saw and they conquered and now, Gumi, and helpless governors are genuflecting and begging them! I am not a security person but I know that appeasement, as a strategy, is NOT sustainable. Of course, they have taken over Kastina, Zamfara, Niger and Southern Kaduna (where the women had to take the extreme step of nude-protesting) where they slaughter, maim, burn and kidnap at their pleasure. They have attacked bullion vans, monarchs, footballers, reverends, IDPs, wedding guests, mourners and even corpses. Just the other day, Buratai’s LGA was attacked, where many were abducted in addition to their usual scorched-earth practice. The Global Rights has just reported that 4552 of our compatriots were murdered in ‘mass atrocities’ in 2020. We are not talking of the amount amassed as individual and government ransoms, houses burnt and farms laid desolate, those maimed and those who have joined the clubs of refugees, widows and orphans and economic destitute. The pain and shame meted out on Nigerians and Nigeria is embarrassing enough but the most worrisome and ominous, has been the ‘communication house of commotion’ that the presidency or the federal government has become. It is a forked tongue scenario! After the Borno Massacre, the great Lai said that Nigeria was at the mercy of terrorists because ‘they’ refused to sell arm to us while his principal, the President said that they had given the military all they needed to fight BH. Femi Adesina said the military was well equipped while Garba Shehu said that the farmers did not obtain clearance to go to the farm; the military took time to investigate and later accused the villagers and international community of complicity. https://businessday.ng/columnist/article/chatham-house-declaration-forked-tongue |

Politics / Hundreds Freed In Kaduna As Police Raid A Nigerian ‘torture House’ by haveadream: 5:48pm On Sep 27, 2019 |
Nearly 500 men and boys have been rescued from a building in the northern city of Kaduna, where the detainees were allegedly sexually abused and tortured, Nigerian police said. Children as young as five were among those in chains at what was thought to be an Islamic school, officers said. Kaduna police chief Ali Janga told the BBC the building was raided after a tip-off about suspicious activity. He described it as a “house of torture” and a place of human slavery. Eight suspects, most of them teachers, were arrested. The police chief said the detainees – some with injuries and starved of food – were overjoyed to be freed. The detainees said they had been tortured, sexually abused, starved and prevented from leaving – in some cases for several years. “I have spent three months here with chains on my legs,” Bell Hamza reportedly told Nigerian media. “This is supposed to be an Islamic centre, but trying to run away from here attracts severe punishment; they tie people and hang them to the ceiling for that.” Some of the children told police that their relatives had taken them there, believing the building to be a Koranic school. Two of the children freed by police said their parents had sent them from Burkina Faso. Police believe the rest are mostly from northern Nigeria. Islamic schools are popular in the region but there have long been allegations of abuse in some schools, and of pupils forced to beg for money on the streets. One parent told Reuters news agency that they did not know their children would face “this kind of harsh condition”. The captives are sheltering at a camp where their families are arriving to identify them. Hafsat Muhammad Baba of the Kaduna state government told the BBC the government will continue to provide medical care for the men and boys. https://www.palmtreereporters.com/hundreds-freed-in-kaduna-as-police-raid-a-nigerian-torture-house/ |

Politics / Nigeria's Muhammadu Buhari Says He's Alive, Not An Imposter by haveadream: 3:50pm On Dec 03, 2018 |
LAGOS, Nigeria – Nigeria's president took the extraordinary step of denying rumors that he died and was replaced by a body double, telling the country that he is alive and well. "It is the real me I assure you," President Muhammadu Buhari said Sunday to a group of Nigerians during a visit to Poland, where he is attending the United Nations Climate Conference. "A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health," Buhari said. "I am still going strong." The 76-year-old, who was elected in 2015 and will run for his second term in February, has been in ill health throughout his presidency. But in the video of his remarks posted to Twitter by his personal assistant, he joked as he dismissed the rumors, to laughter and head-shaking applause by some government officials after a Nigerian posed a question about his identity. The government has been tight-lipped about Buhari's health throughout his presidency. Rumors of his death started in 2017, when Buhari spent seven weeks in London for medical treatment. They abated when he returned to Nigeria, but returned in full force last month, stoked by prominent opposition leaders and separatists. Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra, said that a Sudanese lookalike, named Jubril, had taken Buhari's place as a body double. His claims were shared widely online, often accompanied by videos that appeared to portray a dead Buhari lying in a London hospital. This is not the first time that Nigerians have speculated about a president's mortality. State secrecy around former President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's ill health fostered similar rumors before Yar'Adua died in office in 2010. As Nigeria prepares for the upcoming elections, the opposition said the president's health renders him unfit to continue his tenure. Some have questioned his ability to contain insurgent groups and Islamic extremists, which the president recently said had started using drones. In the 2015 elections, Buhari made the defeat Boko Haram a major goal for his presidency. But extremists continue to carry out deadly suicide bombings and abductions in the northeast and wider Lake Chad region. Deadly attacks against the Nigerian military are on the rise. In November alone, 39 Nigerian soldiers were killed and another 43 were wounded, according to the presidency. In late November, Buhari pivoted from repeated claims from his government that Boko Haram had been "crushed," instead urging the military to "rise to the challenge." The Islamic State also claimed it is "full control" of Arege, a town near Lake Chad, after Nigerian soldiers fled their barracks. The group also posted a statement Monday on the main IS website claiming that, after two days of attacks against the barracks, many soldiers were also killed and wounded. The Nigerian military has not responded to the claims. ___ Associated Press writer Maamoun Youssef in Cairo contributed to this report. Politics / CBN: How NNPC, Buhari’s Finance Minister Withdrew $3.12 Billion From NLNG by haveadream: 2:05pm On Nov 23, 2018 |
Twenty-two withdrawals totalling $3.12 billion were made from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) dividends account domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the last three years. This is according to documents submitted to the Senate Committee on Gas Resources by the CBN in Abuja on Thursday. Chairman of the committee, Bassey Akpan, read out the figures when officials of the CBN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) appeared before the committee. NAN reports that the committee was looking into the 1.05 billion dollars that the NNPC admitted withdrawing from the NLNG dividend account to “augment under-recoveries” in the importation of petrol. NLNG is a gas firm jointly owned by the federal government and three multinational oil companies namely Shell, Total and Eni. The NNPC, which represents the government in the gas company, holds 49 per cent of the shares. Shell owns 25.6 per cent, Total 15 per cent and Eni 10.4 per cent. The lawmakers are angry that the NNPC acted beyond its powers by unilaterally drawing from the NLNG dividends, without recourse to the National Assembly or other tiers of government. According to them, dividends from the NLNG are supposed to be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation, to be shared among the federal, state and local governments. But the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru, told the Senators recently that the corporation acted in line with its establishment act. According to Mr Baru, Section 7 (4) (b) of NNPC Act empowers the corporation to fund its operations from revenues generated by it. He said the action was necessitated by the need to sustain the supply of petrol across the country following the withdrawal of independent oil marketers from importation after the stoppage of fuel subsidy in 2016. At Thursday’s hearing, MR Akpan directed the NNPC, represented by its Chief Financial Officer, Isiaka Abdulrazak, to furnish the committee with all the originating mandates for the 22 withdrawals. The senator gave the directive after Mr Abdulrazak said upon enquiry from the lawmakers, that the NNPC was the operator of the account. However, a new twist was added to the matter when Mr Akpan asked the CBN’s Acting Director of Banking Services, Christopher Olomukoro, whether authorisation for withdrawal from the account came from any other entity or government official other than the NNPC. Mr Olumokoro answered in the affirmative, saying the CBN “also accepts withdrawal mandates from the Minister of Finance”. “So, who runs the account? Is it a joint account between the NNPC and the Federal Ministry of Finance?” Mr Akpan asked. The CBN director answered: “No, but the issue here is that the Honourable Minister of Finance also has the power to submit mandates in respect of that account.” At this point, Mr Akpan said out of the 22 withdrawals, the CBN submitted mandates for only seven, which he said came from the NNPC. He wondered why the mandates from the minister of finance were not included. This elicited reactions from members of the committee, who requested for all the 22 withdrawal mandates in custody of the CBN from both the minister and NNPC. They also directed the NNPC to provide the originating mandates and letters of approvals for its withdrawals from the account. The committee gave the agencies till November 30 to provide the documents and adjourned sitting till December 4. https://www.palmtreereporters.com/how-nnpc-buharis-finance-minister-withdrew-3-12-billion-from-nlng-account-cbn/ |

The number of witnesses is immaterial. Just this week, one of our clients was in court with four witnesses against one and yet we won the case. Buhari's EFCC will always be disgraced in court because they have no idea of what they are doing but rather they are specialist in media trial. By the way am not a supporter of the loquacious Fayose. stephanie11: |
