The Tinubu Versus Osinbajo Titanic Clash: Avoiding The Yoruba Trap of Mutually Assured Destruction

As BAT and PYO faces off in what is likely to be one titanic clash for the ages, the bottom line for the Yoruba is to avoid what might be a cleverly set trap of mutually assured destruction. Mutual assured destruction (MAD) refers to the concept that two superpowers are capable of annihilating each other with nuclear weapons, regardless of whether they are attacked first. It is therefore critically important that they and their supporters be reminded that the bottomline for Yoruba in Nigeria’s primitive ethnocentric “winner take all” politics is to ensure that one of them ultimately captures the grand price, Aso Rock.

In 2015, for the first time ever in Nigerian politics, the Yoruba formed the core of a winning presidential coalition. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) engineered the coalition and Professor Yemi Osinbajo (PYO) for seven years has loyally served as Buhari’s VP with all the baggages that come with being on the same ticket on what many Nigerians would probably vote as one of the worst presidencies in Nigerian history. The saving grace for the APC is that the opposition PDP is so disorganised and has lost its political mojo.

Foreign Affairs / OPINION: Out Of Ukraine War, A Plan For Africa’s Food Security by Health16: 8:22am On Mar 31, 2022
A foreign conflict has exposed Africa’s dependence on imports and is galvanising action to boost local food production and tackle climate threats

The victims of war are sometimes found far away from the battlefield—and so it is with Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. For while the fighting there is causing immeasurable suffering and destruction, it is also threatening a silent catastrophe in Africa.

The conflict has sent food prices soaring. This is hard for the 283 million people who are already going hungry on the continent. War in Ukraine has also exposed Africa’s chronic dependence on food imports.

Wheat imports account for about 90% of Africa’s $4 billion trade with Russia and nearly half of the continent’s $4.5 billion trade with Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia have disrupted grain shipments at a time when global stockpiles were already tight. This is now raising the spectre of mass starvation on a continent that depends on food imports to feed itself.
