Christianity EtcWhy Carry The Bible You Don't Read? by HenryQuest(op): 6:26am On Oct 27, 2013
It is not a new knowledge that many Christians move about with bible but hardly opens it. There are many reasons why people do this; either to make people to believe they are born again or to appear holy and sanctified amongst men. With our actions, it is obvious that the bible we carry are just used for the purpose of decoration. Happy sunday to you all.
PoliticsPDP Crisis: Five More Govs Ready To Join Us – Baraje by HenryQuest(op): 5:29am On Oct 22, 2013
Barely one week after a court declared the parallel National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) illegal, the leadership of the group has boasted that five more governors have indicated interest to join the seven already with the group. This is coming at a time when the Baraje group has vowed to remove Alhaji Bamanga Tukur from office as national chairman of the party.
Justice Elvis Chukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja had Friday last week proclaimed the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP National Working Committee, (NWC) as the authentic national leadership of the party.

Reacting to this, the group, in a statement signed by Kawu Baraje, disclosed that it would  abide by the court’s judgment but would hold a meeting this week to decide another line of action.

He stated: “As a group that has a lot of respect for the judiciary, we have accepted the ruling in good faith and wish to abide by it. Even so, we have directed our legal team to appeal the judgment, as a matter of urgency, as we remain convinced that we have a good case and are thus determined to ensure that Tukur and his cohorts are not allowed to hold sway as the leaders of our great party.”

Baraje, who just returned from the Holy Pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, disclosed that he has convened an emergency meeting of the G7, stakeholders and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the New PDP to exhaustively discuss the new developments and chart the way forward, as there is no going back on the struggle to rescue PDP from the “hands of usurpers.”

He said: “Apart from deciding on the Federal High Court ruling and the challenges facing us a group, the G7/stakeholders/NWC meeting slated for this week is expected to deliberate on how five more governors of PDP that have indicated interest to join the Baraje leadership will be received in the fold.”

The factional national chairman denied media reports of a crack in its camp and declared that his group was determined  to remove the Tukur-led NWC it described as undemocratic elements.

He said: “Let us reiterate that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, reflected in a section of the media, of division and disunity among our governors and National Assembly members because of our current travails, the fact remains that instead of division, our current travails have strengthen us the more and act as a unifying factor that have shown us that it is a matter of time that the undemocratic elements that have seized our party will be dislodged.

“Meanwhile, we feel nothing but pity for Alhaji Tukur and his NWC, who are already gloating over their ‘victory’ over us and even had the temerity to describe us and our governors as criminals. By being so uncouth in addressing governors duly elected by Nigerians, Tukur and his disciples have once more vindicated our struggle to flush out these unholy undemocratic elements from our party.

“We are confident that this is one mission, which we shall successfully accomplish, by the grace of God, not minding the use of state security agencies to harass and intimidate our people.”

CrimeWoman Fakes Own Kidnap In Enugu by HenryQuest(op): 6:49am On Oct 15, 2013
Police in Enugu have arrested a woman that allegedly faked her own kidnap to demand a ransom from her husband.
Nancy Chukwu is accused of conspiring with a man to stage her abduction in Enugu and asking for 200,000 naira (£780; $1,250) ransom.
Mrs Chukwu, a housewife and trader, reportedly gave her husband’s phone number to her alleged accomplice— a commercial motorcyclist.
The man then called her husband and, pretending to be a kidnapper, demanded the money to be paid into an account if he wanted to see his wife again.
The woman is believed to have hidden herself with the man, waiting to get a positive response from the husband, Marcus Chukwu.
Rather than pay, he went to the police, who eventually traced the bank account to a friend of the motorcyclist.
Mrs Chukwu and the alleged accomplice were arrested, and a police spokesman later said they both confessed to the crime.

CrimeMan Chops Off Own Genitals, Throws Them To Dogs by HenryQuest(op): 5:48am On Oct 11, 2013
A 30-year-old man, Ejike is lying in critical condition in a private hospital in Nkpor near Onitsha after cutting off his manhood with a knife. According to sources, Ejike, from Nkwelle Uke community in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state, was a luxurious bus conductor based in Onitsha until he returned to the village recently.
He allegedly visited the village shrine and invoked the spirit of the diety before taking away kolanuts offered to the gods and from that moment, began to manifest strange signs.

It was gathered that last weekend, Ejike took a knife, cut off his penis and scrotum, and a strange dog suddenly appeared and ran away with the severed genitals. Family members were said to have rushed him to the hospital immediately.

When Daily Sun visited the hospital yesterday, Ejike’s private parts were completely bandaged while a catheter was fixed from the region where he passes urine.

Though he refused to talk to the reporter, he was furious when her sister arrived with his aged father. He blurted out, saying he took the action in protest so that the family would know that he was not joking when he said he would cut his penis. Scores of visitors in the hospital also said he had threatened to cut off his manhood in the past because his penis had disappointed him several times.

But the elder sister who was attending to him in the hospital told Daily Sun that he acted under the influence of evil forces. She said that no man in his right senses would slice his manhood, adding that the family wass shattered by his action.

The Chief Medical Director, Crown Hospital Nkpor, Dr. Eddy Emegoaku confirmed that Ejike’s case was critical but declined further comments on his medical condition.

CrimePipeline Explosion Kills Four Brothers In Plateau by HenryQuest(op): 4:52am On Oct 08, 2013
Four members of the same family in Tariya village of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State were, yesterday, killed while attempting to scoop petroleum from a ruptured pipeline in the locality.
Assistant Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Chrisantus Longbit, said two of the victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the other two, who were rushed to Our Lady of Apostle Hospital, Jos, died shortly.
Longbit said when the five people went to siphon the petroleum, a misunderstanding ensued amongst them. One of them, who is presently at large, allegedly lit a match that led to the explosion.
He said: “The person who lit the match fled the area, but we have spoken to his family and they gave his name as Idi.
“We have warned the communities and the NSCDC Commandant, Vincent Bature, has on several occasion visited the village head on this issue of pipeline vandalism, but they have refused to listen.”
…another  dies stealing fuel
Meantime, the decomposed body of a 25-old-man, Zayyanu Abubakar, has been evacuated from inside a petrol tanker compartment where he suffocated and died since Friday, October 4, while stealing petrol.
According to reports the deceased fell inside the tank of the vehicle with plate number, XA 640 TBW, parked along Sokoto Western bye-pass and loaded with 33,000 litres of petrol.
The deceased was alleged to have stolen 20 litres from the fuel compartment and had returned for more when he ended up inside the tank.
It took the combined efforts of the officers of the state fire service, the police from Kwanni Division, Sokoto, and some good Samaritans, four hours to bring out the decomposed body.
Yahaya Mohammed, a relative of the deceased, said: “He told his siblings about his earlier successful exploits and they warned him against going back into the vehicle.
“He had told them that he nearly suffocated in the first attempt, but unknown to them, he went back, got trapped and died.”
A fire serviceman, Zayyanu Jelani said: “We were here since around 8a.m., when we were alerted about the ugly development.
“This is the first time we are recording this type of unfortunate incident in Sokoto apart from fire incidents on fuel tankers.”
Spokesman of the state police command, DSP Al-Mustapha Sani, confirmed the story and added that the police would thoroughly investigate the incident.
The remains of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of Uthmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

TravelAirlines Hike Fares Over Dana Airlines’ Suspension by HenryQuest(op): 4:38am On Oct 08, 2013
Passengers were, yesterday, dazed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, MMA2 and the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, Terminal 1 as airline operators increased airfares astronomically.
Vanguard gathered at the terminal that there was a sharp increase  in fares.
For instance a 55-minutes flight to Abuja attracted between N22, 000 and N26, 000 in the economy class depending on how early a prospective passenger bought the ticket.
Before the clampdown on Dana Airlines, the tickets were sold for between N18, 000 and N20, 000.
First Nation Airways that resumed flights recently after closing shop for about 14 months charged N25, 500 to Abuja while Aero collected N22, 500.
Some passengers, who spoke to Vanguard, lamented that the  operators were using the opportunity of the crisis in the industry to exploit hapless travellers.
One of the passengers, Mr. Wisdom Clark said the situation was unfortunate and pathetic, stressing that in a country where the economy was going down, airlines were still charging exorbitant fares.

PoliticsPDP Reconciliation Will Fail –sagay by HenryQuest(op): 6:37am On Oct 04, 2013
Lawyer and teacher, Prof. Itseruwa Sagay (SAN), does not mince words when it comes to issues of national importance. In this interview, he said the splinter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came to him as a surprise. He does not see the new PDP returning to the fold, adding that it would be a major setback for President Goodluck Jonathan’s ambition for 2015. While speaking with PATIENCE EGWUWA  he gave his candid opinion on how the All Progressives Congress (APC) can make the best of the presidential election in 2015. Excerpts:

Did you foresee the splinter in the PDP?

No, I did not foresee a split as major as this; I certainly did not. What I saw was that there was going to be several disagreements and individuals would leave and join other parties, most likely the All Progressives Congress (APC). For one, I saw Rotimi Amaechi, ending up in APC because of the unrelenting hostility, which he was experiencing, both from Aso Rock (the president and his wife) and then the locally imposed PDP executive in Rivers State. So, I didn’t see him remaining in the PDP because they just didn’t give him any room to maneuver, to make a dignified return to the party. They wanted to humiliate him at all costs. So, I knew he was out.

The other person I thought was definitely going to leave was Nyako, the governor of Adamawa. He has been angry for a long time. You could see it in his countenance and in his words. He didn’t have anything to lose. He was doing his second term. I could see that in his eyes. So, I knew that he was going to leave.

But the others have been a bit of a surprise: Lamido, Wamakko, the Kwara governor and Aliyu; though Aliyu has been very vulnerable. He has spoken a lot, but I thought that at the end of the day he would retract back into the PDP. So, what has happened now is very major; it is an earth-shaking development. The PDP can pretend that it is an in-house affair, but it is actually an earth-shaking event.

I don’t see those people ever coming back. You can see that the man who schemed it all is Atiku. He is the schemer, coordinator and organizer of everything. He is a good chess player. What he did was first to create a platform in the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM). He got PDM secretly registered. Nobody knew so he took everybody by surprise. Then, he kicked up such a force within the PDP that the party either has to swallow whatever is ingested into it and be humiliated and then allow him take over or he would have an excuse for leaving and then joining PDM with his group.

For example, demanding that President Goodluck Jonathan should undertake that he would not contest the 2015 election, that is mission impossible. Between Goodluck and his wife, Patience, that is the beginning and end of life. There is nothing that is ever going to make him renounce his ambition for 2015. Never!

Even though he has not said he is running.

He has not come out to declare his ambition, but everybody knows that his two legs are in 2015. Nothing will ever stop him from contesting. A nuclear bomb will not stop Jonathan from 2015 election.

Now, Atiku is a very smart and intelligent man. So, he knows this, but he doesn’t want to create a situation where people will say that he split the PDP frivolously and went away. So, he brought in this condition, knowing that the answer will be no. Then he would have something to hang on to and say ‘if only he had agreed to renounce his ambition, we would have remained and cooperated to make the PDP a stronger party. Since he has refused, on principle, we are leaving.’ And then they will declare for PDM. So, it is all stage-managed. It is a clever chess move for Atiku to actualize his determined intention to contest the presidential election in 2015.

So, you don’t see their efforts at reconciliation bearing fruits?

No, the reconciliation will fail. If you look at what Baraje is doing, you will know that they are not joking. One, he is opening a secretariat and then instituting more legal actions against the PDP saying that Tukur’s PDP and the executive should no longer be recognized; that his own should be the one recognized. But of course, we know that that is not possible. No court is going to say that. All those hostile actions are just laying the ground for this splinter PDP people moving en masse to PDM. Nothing is going to stop them. They are going to do that.

If that happens, what are Jonathan’s chances in 2015; bearing in mind also the recent emergence of the APC?

His chances of nomination will be much greater because virtually all the opposition to that would have been out. In fact, he will then be nominated without any primaries. That is step one. But the second step which is becoming president again in 2015 will be much difficult. Now, he has a narrower field of absolute and certain support in the country.

If you go to the South-South, he can only be confident of four states out of the six. Edo is already out and Rivers will be out. He will be left with Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa and Delta. If you go to the North, virtually all the North is going to pass him by. Already Kano, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara and Nasarawa are for the APC. There is no question about that. With this people going away, Sokoto, Niger, Kwara, and Adamawa are all gone. More than half of the North is already gone.

In those circumstances, he cannot rely on northern votes as he did the other time. And don’t forget that we have the CPC factor in the APC which is also very strong in the North. So, the North for Jonathan is almost a write off.

Really, he would be depending almost exclusively on the four states in the south-south and some states in the south-east. Imo is virtually out. But since APGA usually don’t have a presidential candidate, may be the remaining four states will vote for him. So, his chances will be much narrower. There is no question about that. And of course, forget west because they will vote en masse for the APC.

What role will his incumbency play in all of these?

It will not make any difference in this case. The opposition is just too much. Not just too much, it is an angry opposition; determined opposition. Then another factor which also is going to work against him is this northern obsession with power. The North is obsessed with power; especially the Hausa-Fulani and they will do anything (there is no limit to what they can do) for the so-called power to return to the North. That is the problem. It is a problem with me as a person because when you don’t look at the quality of a candidate and you are simply saying that power must return to the North, that is a problem.

They don’t care whether a donkey is fielded; it does not matter to them. They don’t just care about the consequences of having someone who is grossly inadequate holding such office. It is a sort of blind attitude to governance. So, we have a lot of problems ahead of us.

My hope is that plans like that should fail and that somebody should emerge because of his competence, record, character and the programmes he has for the country, for a change. In this mix in which there is no absolute certainty of anybody getting it, it is possible a good candidate will emerge.

How do you see the emergence of the APC and their strategy for 2015? It seems Gen Buhari is still interested in the race for the presidency.

The APC too has its problems. There are in fact two major problems, one of which is permanent leadership. What they have now is temporary leadership. But more worrying, more sensitive is who becomes its presidential candidate. Buhari is a very powerful figure in the APC, but in my view, it will be a mistake to field him. The man has contested three times already and has lost whether fairly or unfairly. Second, he is strongly associated with this extreme northern mentality. Let’s leave out the Muslim aspect. He also has the Huasa-Fulani mentality of power at all costs and also he does not have respect for other parts of the country.

The recent statement he made of equating Boko Haram with Niger Delta militants to me is an illustration of extreme insensitivity and so much commitment to the North. It shows that he can see no wrong by anybody in the north. We are talking of mass murderers who have killed thousands of innocent Nigerians. They have butchered Nigerians, butchered United Nations personnel, destroyed newspaper houses and killed their workers, destroyed so many churches and killed Christians as well as Muslims, and even killed school children in a boarding house.

How can any human being talk of accommodating people like that in any civilized democratic setup. These are people who deserve to be at The Hague being tried for crimes against humanity. So, for me, Buhari should not show his face. And if the APC puts Buhari forward, they have cut their chances of success by half.

Who would you rather tip for the post?

I have been thinking along that line because I am an APC man myself.  My view is that the best combination would be Audu Ogbeh. He is one of the senior members.

Is he not too old for the job?

He is under 70. Buhari is older than Audu Ogbeh. Audu Ogbeh as president and Raji Fashola as vice president; that is the winning combination as far as I am concerned.

Some are even saying Tambuwal and Fashola.

No, no, no. Tambuwal has not established himself as anything. He doesn’t have exposure. I have seen him; he is doing well, but I think his time is yet to come. This man, Audu Ogbeh is a Second Republic politician and he was voted the cleanest politician in Shagari’s government; the most honest politician; the man who shunned corruption totally.

He tried to do it in PDP as chairman and he didn’t survive it. He was kicked out; he was almost killed. So, he is one of the cleanest and finest politicians we have ever had. If you put him there and you have a strong man like Fashola who has the energy and dynamism behind him, then you have a winning team.

Crime2 Men Docked For Having Sex Inside Church by HenryQuest(op): 6:28am On Oct 04, 2013
Two middle-aged men, Samuel Friday and Oni Oluwatobi have been arraigned in an Osogbo Magistrate Court for allegedly having sexual intercourse inside the auditorium of a church in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The suspected homosexuals, who were facing trial before Magistrate Olusola Aluko over allegation of indecent sexual practice, were arrested at the Peace of Jesus Apostolic Church, Asubiaro, Osogbo, where they allegedly committed the crime.

The police prosecutor, Mr. Solomon Oladele, told the court that they conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by unlawfully engaged in homosexual at the said church.

The charge sheet read out in court read in part:  “That you, Samuel Friday, and Oni Oluwatobi at Peace of Jesus Apostolic Asubiaro Osogbo in Osogbo Magisterial District did conspire together to commit felony wit indecent sexual practice between yourselves.”

The police prosecutor said the two accused persons had through their action committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused persons however pleaded not guilty to the charges and their counsel, Mrs. Nenna Ugwu urged the court to grant them bail with assurance that they would not jump bail if granted.

In his ruling, Magistrate Aluko granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in the like sum and adjourned the case till November 14, 2013 for mention.

PoliticsWhat Have You Done For Nigeria? by HenryQuest(op): 7:46am On Oct 01, 2013
To so many people, Nigeria is a country where nothing good works out. Infact, there are many misconception about Nigeria. Many are exhibiting hate, acrimonious, and indifference attitude towards the country because of some ugly situations and predicaments. There was an American President that once said that Americans should stop thinking about what the country will do for them but about what they will do for the country. So many might disagree with me here but I strongly believe that we the ordinary Nigerians have not even done enough in our own little way. Take for instance, some Nigerians that criticise our educational sector are amongst those that pay for exams to be written for them. On the long run, such a person will graduate with an empty brain and will join the critics of our educational sector. How many of us dispose refuse properly? How many of us drink bottled juice and eat bananas in the car and dispose them off properly? How many of us employ people based on their ability and qualification instead of our ties with them? How many of us supports our various local communities in any way we can? There are so many ways we can give to our country. I am not trying to say that the government have been living up to expectations but to emphasis the fact that we also can contribute to the growth of Nigeria by playing our own role properly.
In all, despite the security, economic, ethnic and political challenges in the country, I stand firm to state that Nigeria remains a home for all. We all have a role to play in the building of a better Nigeria. GOD BLESS NIGERIA. Happy independence.

I THEREFORE ASK; WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR NIGERIA?

PoliticsReps Declare N320bn Missing From Crude Oil Remittance by HenryQuest(op): 7:29am On Sep 30, 2013
Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Hon Abdulmumuin Jibrin, last weekend declared N320billion missing from the remittance by the Nigeria Nationl Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). He said that the sum of  N1.516 trillion was paid in by NNPC into the Federal Government treasury.

Jibrin noted that what Nigerians want is total remittance of revenue generated from oil sales and not crude oil sales figures declared recently by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources. He said:  “It should be noted that this is after taking into consideration, payments for Joint venture cash calls (i.e. cost of production) and petrol subsidy payments. However, only N1.516 trillion has been remitted to the Federal Government coffers by the NNPC showing a shortfall of N320.654 billion for the period”, the lawmaker noted.

“Again, it should be noted that this is actual revenue generated at the prevailing market rate of crude oil and gas. The budget for the Fiscal year 2013 was based on $79 per barrel, whereas the price had hardly fallen below $100 per barrel for the whole year. This implies that even though we are receiving way above the benchmark on our crude oil and gas sales, we are not meeting our targets because our crude oil production has fallen way below budgeted estimates as a result of massive crude oil theft and unabated corruption in the oil and gas sector,”Jibrin lamented

The Finance Committee chairman maintained that Nigerians are not as keen on crude oil sales figures as the actual remittances from in NNPC to the federation account, adding that the amount remitted was more important and NNPC should have been more honest to present the figures so that Nigerians could understand what actually accrued  to the Federal Government.

His words: “For January to September 2013, the federation was expected to earn N1.837 trillion (or N204.168 billion per month) from the sale of crude oil and gas marketed by the NNPC with the Petroleum Minister as its board chairperson”

CrimeWoman Accused Of Turning Into Cat Escapes Death In Aba by HenryQuest(op): 6:47am On Sep 30, 2013
A businesswoman in Aba, Abia State, Mrs. Ngozi Okoye has her stars to thank for narrowly escaping being lynched over the disappearance of a mysterious cat, suspected to be a product of witchcraft.

Ironically, she was the victim of the cat that was initially found in her home and it took the intervention of journalists and policemen to save her from a mob action.

Narrating her ordeal, Mrs. Okoye said for long, she had observed that money she kept in a firmly locked cardboard in her room at No.1 Obu Street/Obohia Road in Aba was always  missing mysteriously.

The woman, who sells fruits near the Aba Shopping Centre, said at a point, she suspected her children and kept a watch on them.

But when she realized that her children were innocent, she reasoned that what was happening to her had spiritual undertone and reported the matter to a man of God.

Mrs. Okoye said after observing some prayer points as directed by the pastor and the problem persisted, she contacted another man of God in her desperate bid to get the problem solved.

This time around, she was told to fast and pray for a given number of days along with the clergy man who would also pray for her over the issue.

The woman said after the fasting session, the problem stopped and on that day of the incident, she was taken aback when she wanted to collect some cash from inside the cardboard and touched a strange object.

When she opened the cardboard properly and pointed a torchlight towards the direction she kept the money, she saw a half dead pussy cat with some naira notes stuffed in its mouth.

Shocked at the strange creature, she raised the alarm and alerted the man of God whom she had met initially over the issue, just as people in the neighbourhood trooped to her house to catch a glimpse of the ‘witch’ pussy cat.

She said the man of God advised her to bring the now dead cat to him before it could be buried.

Confusion crept in as the now restive crowd wanted the cat to be burnt, but the woman insisted that she must take it to the man of God and put the cat in a bag and headed for the man of God’s house while the crowd, which caused traffic gridlock on the ever busy Asa/Ehi Road followed her, insisting that she must give them the cat to be burnt.

In the melee that followed, the cat was said to have disappeared and the crowd turned against the woman, accusing her of being the witch cat and was about lynching her when she ran into a shop close to a commercial bank at the shopping centre.

Despite the pleadings of policemen providing security at the bank, the crowd surged forward and the situation was saved when a group of journalists who came to the scene alerted the police.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for Ndiegoro Division, Mr. Crescent Mama, sent his men to the scene, but the crowd which had blocked the entire road, could not let go. It took police re-enforcement for the woman who had been smuggled into the bank premises to be taken away after the crowd had been reasonably dispersed.

Bemoaning her fate, the woman vehemently denied the allegation and rained curses on whoever that turned into the cat that had been stealing her money mysteriously.

The police at Ndiegoro later released her after being kept in protective custody as investigations were ongoing into the matter.

CrimeAgain, Boko Haram Massacre 40 Students In Yobe by HenryQuest(op): 6:32am On Sep 30, 2013
It was a bloody Sunday in Gujba, a sleepy town in Yobe State, when gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram Islamists stormed the state’s College of Agriculture and killed more than 40 students, some of them in their sleep. The insurgents were said to have launched the coordinated attacks in the early hours of yesterday. The attack was coming as four travellers were slaughtered in renewed attacks on motorists near Benisheik town in neighbouring Borno State.

Giving an account of the killings, a student who does want to be mentioned said: “The attackers had sneaked into the male hostel around 1am when the students were fast asleep, set the hostels, administrative block and some of the classrooms ablaze before opening fire on students who attempted to flee the scene.”

A statement signed by Abdullahi Bego, Special Adviser on Press Affairs and Information to Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam, confirmed that 40 students were killed in the massacre at dawn. “Forty students were killed by criminals and terrorists while four others were injured during the attack,” the media aide said in the statement.

He said that the Governor had visited the injured persons on admission at the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu even as he (Shema) described the attack as “devastating, heinous and barbaric.” According to Bego, the governor also pledged that government would foot the medical bills of the victims while commiserating with the families of the deceased, and those injured in the attack.

“Governor Gaidam is calling on the military and other law enforcement operatives in the state to intensify surveillance and patrols, to deal more effectively with the prevailing security challenges. Although, there is increase in troop movement and  deployment of more military hardware in the North-East, people are yet to see the kind of action that will effectively nip criminal and terrorist activities in the bud, the governor said in the statement.

Recall that yesterday’s attack came barely two months after a similar attack on a secondary school at Mamudo in which 42 students were reportedly killed. Gunmen had set ablaze the students hostels at the Government Secondary School on July 6, killing 42 students and a teacher. The development prompted the state government to shut down public schools in the state for two months in order to enable it construct perimeter fences around them.

In Borno, the insurgents returned to Benisheik  last Saturday, where four passengers, including a woman travelling in a Volkswagen Golf car were attacked. The incident occurred at Malumti, a village near Benisheik where the militants had killed about 140 people mostly travellers, two weeks ago.

Sources said the Islamists dared the military men on patrol as they waylaid the Golf car. “They killed the driver and three men but spared the woman. The car and its passengers were coming from Damaturu,” a resident claimed. The insurgents however, set ablaze the car. As if that was not enough, the attackers reportedly returned on Sunday morning, hijacked a truck conveying food items from Maiduguri, evacuated the items, loaded them into a waiting vehicle and burnt the vehicle after allowing the driver to flee.

“Many vehicles trying to use the road today, (Sunday) on their way to Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa and Jos were stopped in the morning. Many of them had to return to Maiduguri with their passengers,” Saleh Ali, a trader told Daily Sun .

Reacting to the incidents yesterday, President Goodluck Jonathan,  condemned the killings describing them as depressing in the wake of the 53rd independence celebration.

Speaking during the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Service, at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, he said anybody in his shoes would be short of  what to tell Nigerians nor words to comfort the families of the affected students. “If you are wearing my shoes, what courage would you have to stand here before Nigerians, what message will you send to Nigerians, to the parents of these young people, our future leaders, students in school of Agriculture? would you say that the killing of these students is political?”, the President asked.

In a related development, the Senate President, David Mark, condoled with the government and people of Niger State over the ill-fated boat mishap in the River Niger near Malilli village in which no fewer than 42 persons have been confirmed dead.

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar also described the Gujba killings as ‘senseless and tragic’, saying, it casts a ‘horrible image’ on the events marking the 53rd National Day Anniversary. “As a father, I am deeply saddened by these senseless murders. These were young Nigerians studying agriculture with a goal of helping to feed our nation.

“We must urgently review our strategy for confronting these cowards. The murders at the Yobe State College of Agriculture are further proofs that we need to have a rethink on how we provide security for our nation.” Quoting late American civil rights hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, (Jr.) as a rallying point for Nigeria, Atiku said: “Those who love peace must learn to organize as effectively as those who love war. We must organize ourselves better to provide dignity and security for Nigeria.  To defeat terror, we must use much more potent, unbeatable weapons: democracy, education and opportunity, ” the former vice president advised.

PoliticsI Didn’t Sign Agreement Not To Run In 2015 – Jonathan by HenryQuest(op): 6:22am On Sep 30, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has said  that he did not sign an agreement with any group or persons not to contest the 2015 Presidential election for a second term in office.  Also, he has described as unfair, the continuous strike by  the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), despite efforts by his government to address the infrastructural decay in institutions of higher learning.

The President also disclosed that he met with service chiefs yesterday with an order to end the embarrassing attacks by Boko Haram, adding that the state of emergency declared had been successful but the insurgents now look for soft spots like schools to frustrate and embarrass government.

Jonathan, during a Presidential media chat anchored by Senami Ohiemohia of AIT, with Shehu Dauda of Capital Post, Nosa Igiebor of Tell Magazine, Gloria Ume-Ezeoke of Channels Television and Shola Oshunkeye of The Sun Newspapers, challenged those who insist that he signed such agreement to publish it for Nigerians to see.

He said that his remarks at an interaction in Addis Ababa with some Nigerians that, if the seven-year single tenure passed, he would not run, were misconstrued.

“I didn’t sign any agreement not to contest. If I did, they would have shown you. What I said was, if Nigeria accepts the single tenure agreement, I will not run because it will be assumed I’m greedy, that having served four years as a president and two years completion of Yar’Adua’s term following his demise, adding additional seven years will amount to 12 years on the seat.”

President Jonathan insisted that the time was not right for him to declare his intentions on whether or not to contest the 2015 election, saying doing so will be against the Electoral Act and a criminal offence.

He said: “It is even against the Electoral Law for me to declare that I would contest when the electoral body has not blown the whistle,” adding however that his silence should not be a stumbling block to other people interested in contesting because they must prepare to convince Nigerians that they are the better alternatives.

On the allegations that his aides were already erecting billboards announcing his intention, President Jonathan expressed surprise at the development and said it would be investigated and corrected since he had ordered after the 2011 elections that all billboards bearing his campaign should be pulled down.

On ASUU’s strike, Jonathan said the union’s continuous demand for earned allowance was not part of the Federal Government’s responsibility as they are supposed to be paid from internally generated revenue, adding that touting infrastructural decay despite efforts meant to address it was unfair. He appealed to the lecturers to return to class.

He said the government had fulfilled the major part of the 2009 agreements and that the others would be fulfilled as time goes on.

President Jonathan said he personally ordered the inventory of all the universities in the country with the aim of exposing the problem and gradually addressing them.

“That is why we released N100 billion to uplift the infrastructures of the universities across the country. We cannot solve all the problems overnight.”

Presidential Jonathan expressed surprise that in spite of his goodwill to the universities, ASUU had decided to remain adamant, hinting that it was high time labour laws were looked into to check some of the excesses of striking workers.

He said: “ASUU strike is very unfortunate. Throughout this period, government decided to take inventory in schools. Our technical team set up, visited all the schools and presented  video and pictures to the Federal Executive Council and I directed the Vice President to ensure that the same report was presented to the National Economic Council meeting, which has governors as members.

“After seeing those documentations, we said this must change. For us to take that inventory, it means we are committed to improve the university infrastructure. So, for ASUU to go on strike on this, is unfair. They didn’t prompt us to take this inventory, we did it voluntarily.

“No government wants to expose itself, so, for me to do this it shows we are committed. I didn’t expect the strike to last this long, that it has lasted this long is unfortunate.”

On the immediate steps to end the strike, President Jonathan said: “I call on ASUU, for the sake of our children, to return to class. Their earned allowances is supposed to be paid from internally generated revenue. We are only assisting them, it is not mandatory.

“Even if we have all the money in the world, we can’t solve all the problems now and we have released N100 billion outside the line budget, they should return to class.”

The President described the seat of power as hot because “whatever happens in the country, people look up to the President to solve it,” adding that despite the numerous challenges, Nigeria was better off under his administration.

He listed the establishment of more federal universities, stemming corruption in the agriculture and petroleum sectors as well as the successful sale of power generating and distribution companies to the private sector as part of his achievements, saying the results would soon be felt.

President Jonathan denied that the Nigerian economy was bankrupt, describing those behind such assertions as unpatriotic.

PoliticsStop Treating Nigerians Like Animals, Catholic Church Tells FG by HenryQuest(op): 7:50am On Sep 28, 2013
The Federal Government has been called upon to stop treating Nigerians like animals in the parks. The charge was given by the Catholic church in the country which stressed that even animals have rights to good life.

Fr. Evaristus Bassey, the Director of Church and Society of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, who conveyed the church message on Friday while briefing newsmen in Calabar to mark the World Tourism Day, decried the deplorable condition of the nation’s roads and the ongoing deforestation of  large reserves including water resources, adding that such would endanger economic growth in rural communities.

Fr. Bassey, who doubles as the Executive Secretary of Caritas Nigeria/JDPC, said this year’s World Tourism Day with the theme “Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future,”  is  aimed at promoting a friendly environment for the well being of especially the poor in our society.

He said: “The holy father, Pope Francis and the bishops of Nigeria enjoin all to inculcate environment friendly approaches in the exploitation and use of natural water resources, forest reserves, green belts, game reserves etc to enhance economic growth for the well- being of all especially the poor in our society today and for future generations. Water always has a link with sanitation and sanitation has a link to health.

“Deforestation is causing many water sources to dry up.  Rivulets that were before now protected by a canopy of trees are now exposed to sun that quicken their dryness. Provision of good drinking sources of water enhances the well being of citizens.

“Neglected tropical diseases, many of which emerge from poor water sources are by so doing tackled as well through provision of adequate and accessible supply of potable water. Some states have good water access per population. Many states still have very poor access especially in the rural areas. We anticipate the occasion tomorrow and call on government at all levels to initiate small water schemes in rural areas.”

Calling on the Federal Government to give special attention to communities that have limited their livelihoods because their forests have been declared national parks, forests or games reserves, Bassey said: “Government should stop treating the people of these areas as if they are part of the animals in the parks, even an animal has rights.”

According to him, “since the vegetation contributes to the well-being of the planet, communities in national parks, for instance the three axis of the Cross River national park, should have their infrastructure developed as a matter of urgency.”

He decried the deplorable condition of the roads leading to Ekang and the border community with Cameroun, that passes through the Oban East axis of the Cross River National Park, saying: “It is impassable, and the people have been treated as if they were part of the flora and fauna.”

He, however, commended Governor Liyel Imoke for patching up certain sections of forest roads across the state.

CrimeB-i-z-a-r-r-e!: Madness Hits Seven Members Of A Family by HenryQuest(op): 7:14am On Sep 28, 2013
For the family of Mr Ogbonnaya Ani in Umuose Urobo, Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, life can’t be more cruel to seven members of the household now afflicted with madness one after the other.

Indeed, 70-year-old Ani is swimming in the ocean of grief, anguish and pains.  He paints a perfect picture of a fellow whose gods have not been benevolent enough to crack his palm kernel for him. Rather, they watch his blessings turn to blemish.

The Ani family is being ravaged by the spirit of madness. Take this:  Ogbonnaya Ani’s elder brother’s daughter is mentally challenged. His younger brother’s son is in the same condition. Three of his own children, a male and two females, are equally afflicted. His daughter-in-law is not left out. So, there are six mentally ill persons in the family and, perhaps, still counting. Worst still, one of Ani’s mentally challenged daughters is heavily pregnant and no one seems to know who the lover boy is. And before his first wife died, she exhibited some signs of madness.

Recently, our reporter encountered the distraught Ani. He told the stranger than fiction story. There is no doubt that the madness ravaging his immediate and nuclear families have left its toll on the old man. Sadness is evident in his sunken eyes. He looked frail and his voice quakes in palpable agony as he spoke. But for the magnanimity of a relation, Ani and his household would not have had a place to lay their heads. This is because his mentally challenged son, Igwe Ani, alias Martin Martin, set his house ablaze. And before help could come, the structure had been reduced to ashes. So, currently, Ani and his family are squatters somewhere in Umuose Urobo in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

When the reporter visited the family last Wednesday, Ozieme, Ani’s beautiful but mad daughter, was hanging around. With her tummy protruding as a result of advanced pregnancy, she looked vacantly into space, perhaps unaware of her environment and condition. A few times she smiled and muttered to herself. When asked to pose for a photograph, Ozieme obliged.

Before Ozieme became sick, she was a very beautiful girl. In fact, in spite of her condition, glimpses of her beauty remain. And even in her state of madness, men still find her attractive and make love to her. The evidence is the bulging stomach she is carrying.

Tale like no other

“This place we are is not my house,” began Ani, who spoke in his native dialect. “My place is further up, after Oriebe. I relocated to this place because of the problem that I’m facing. I had a small mud house and I made it good enough for people to stay in before the problem started through my son, Igwe. It first started with Igwe and his sister, Ozieme joined later. While Igwe’s problem started at home, Ozieme’s started from outside the community.  When she travelled and returned, she began to behave abnormally.”

In an agony laden voice, Ani continued: “I don’t know how it started but we suspected or thought that Igwe joined his mates to smoke all sorts of things. I cautioned him to stop it if he was indulging in such act but there was no difference. We used to beat him to stop smoking to know if he would but to no avail. He started manifesting madness about eight years ago. He was still in primary school when it started; he was in Primary Four when he broke loose. Because of the problem, he couldn’t continue with his education. I cannot really say if he brought it upon himself by smoking certain substances or it is a problem destined to come”.

Ani said that the problem reached a crescendo when Igwe burnt down his house. “He used to pack all sorts of rubbish and dump in the house. It was impossible to chase him out of the house because he used to wield cutlasses and wood, threatening to harm anyone who gets close to him. At a point, he had outgrown everybody. On a certain day, he set the house ablaze and before people could come to fight the fire, things had got out of hand. That was how the building containing two rooms, a parlour and big verandah were razed down. Thereafter, we became homeless, so I brought my wife and kids to stay in a relation’s place. That was how we relocated.”

Like brother like sister

Ani said that his daughter was okay until a certain man from Nsukka in Enugu State came to seek her hand in marriage. According to him, the man eloped with the girl, adding that by the time she returned home, she had lost her mind even as she nursed a baby.

His words: “In the case of Ozieme, there was a time she travelled to Enugu to stay with her brother. There she started a relationship with one man from Nsukka and they agreed to marry. She brought the man home and introduced him to us. After meeting with us, the man said that he was going to prepare and come back for the formalization of the relationship. She insisted on going with the man; we asked her to wait for the man to go and come but she refused. We didn’t see the man again. When she was coming back, she came with a baby and started behaving in a manner we could not understand. We tried all we could to deal with the situation to no avail. This thing happened about five years ago and we have not set eyes on the man ever since. She didn’t have the soundness of mind to breastfeed and properly care for the baby and she died. Right now, she is heavily pregnant, she will be putting to bed anytime and we do not know who is responsible for the pregnancy.

“Again, another of my daughter who is married and a seamstress is also behaving abnormally. I cannot explain how this problem came into the family. From our parents, we did not experience any such thing. It did not happen to my eldest brother, who had died.”

Family tradition

Madness is becoming a sort of tradition in the family. Take this from Ani: “I cannot say how it came about because I’m not God. But my brother’s daughter, Nweke is also having a mental problem. In her own case, someone took her to a town and later brought her back, saying he could not understand her behaviours anymore. He said that she was talking out of sense hence he brought her home. So, if you ask me, I would say that that was the time I started seeing such a thing in the family. She was the first in the family to be afflicted by the problem. It started about 20 years ago and it has been spreading from one person to another. Even my son’s wife who was married from another village and living in Enugu with Ozieme is also behaving in a way we cannot understand. I learnt that she is walking about the street but I have not seen her. The whole thing is surprising to us. It is an unimaginable disaster. It is a heavy burden on us and we do not know what to do about it. In fact, it is beyond us. If not that we surrendered ourselves to God in prayer, asking him to protect us, who knows what would have happened now?”

Wife’s family involved

Asked if such trait could be traced to his late wife’s family, he said: “In the family of my deceased wife and mother of these mentally challenged children, they had a problem somewhat close to this. But in their case, it wasn’t so pronounced as this. In their own case, it made them to be talking too much. In a nutshell, I would say that my wife’s family manifested a semblance of this problem but it wasn’t full blown like this”.

At a point, Ani couldn’t continue his blood chilling story as he seemed drained of energy. Admitting that he was overwhelmed by the development, he, however, attributed his staying power to the grace of God. “If not God, perhaps I would have been consumed,” he remarked.

Speaking on the matter, an Urobo village leader, Chief Augustine Aja Akuma, said: “When the problem started with Igwe Ogbonnaya Ani, we thought that he had joined some boys to smoke dangerous substances because, at the time, he just returned from Kano where he was staying with his brother. We used to tie him with ropes and beat him in a bid to stop that sort of thing. But the more we tried, the worse the situation became. It got to a point when he began to strip himself naked and started behaving in an incomprehensible manner. He started eating dirty things”.

Chief Akuma further said: “We were yet to come to terms with Igwe’s condition when his sister, Ozieme returned from her station and started behaving abnormally. We started wondering if it was the Nsukka man she ran to that caused it. But if the Nsukka man was responsible for Ozieme’s madness, what about her brother’s condition? Again, if Igwe smoked something and it turned his brain as some thought, did his sister also smoke the same thing? These are questions that could not be answered.  We have been battling to solve the problem without success. We have brought several prayer groups to the family”.

Affirming that it runs in the family, Akuma volunteered: “Pa Ogbonnaya Ani’s brother’s daughter (niece) also had the same problem. In fact, she has been in it for over 20 years because the child she bore when it started is in his 20s now. We don’t know how this thing came about because Pa Ogbonnaya’s father and mother were not known to be mad just as Ani’s siblings were all sound in mind. Why the problem befell their children we cannot explain.

“About four or five years ago, Ogbonnaya Ani’s younger brother’s son (nephew), Sunday Onu, started acting funny. He is a bit calm now because of injections being administered on him by psychiatrist people but that does not mean that he is normal.  Ani’s three children – one man and two women are affected. His son’s wife, who we married from another village, suffers the same fate. We don’t know what this means. We don’t know whether it is a curse or spiritual attack. As I said earlier, we have invited prayer warriors from different churches on several occasions and they came to pray with the family, yet it has defied all solutions”.

Disclosing that the family is in dire need of assistance, he said: “We are appealing to government, well meaning organisations and individuals to come to the aid of the family because they have suffered too much. Ogbonnaya Ani is above 70 years of age, yet he bears this sort of tribulation. At his age, he ought to be enjoying the fruit of his labour, he is supposed to be taken care of by his children but he is the one taking care of them because of their health condition. Whatever help that could be extended to the family will be of immense benefit to them.”

CelebritiesHow I Escaped Death In Kenya Mall Attack –soyinka by HenryQuest(op): 6:55am On Sep 28, 2013
But for a stroke of luck, Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, would have been among the dead in the terror attack that took place at the Nairobi Westgate mall in Kenya last weekend.

Speaking at a press conference at the Freedom Park, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday in honour of the late Ghanaian poet, Professor Kofi Awoonor who died in the attack, Soyinka led a group of eminent Nigerian writers to condemn the Nairobi massacre. Soyinka, who said he, like Awoonor, was invited to the Storymoja/ Hay Literature Festival, said he couldn’t attend because of other pressing engagements he had elsewhere.

“My absence was particularly regrettable, because I had planned to make up for my failure to turn up for the immediate prior edition. Participant or absentee however, this is one edition we shall not soon forget,” said Soyinka.

The iconic writer said, considering his close relationship with Awoonor, he might have been at the same place with him and could have been shot as well. He said: “Kofi and I could have been splitting a bottle at that same watering hole in between events and at the end of each day.”

Condemning the use of religion to commit atrocities, Soyinka, who spoke on the theme, “Humanity and Against,” said: “Those who organised and carried out the outrage on innocent lives in Nairobi are carriers of the most lethal virus of corruption imaginable – corruption of the soul, corruption of the spirit, corruption of that animating humanistic essence that separates us from predatory beasts. I am no theologian of any religion, but I aver that these assailants delude themselves with vistas of paradise after life, that their delusion is born of the perverted reading of salvation and redemption.”

As the literary community mourned the deceased writer, Soyinka felt constrained to denounce his killers, who he described as “the virulent sub-species of humanity who bathe their hands in innocent blood.” He noted further: “Only cowards turn deadly weapons against the unarmed, only the depraved glorify in, or justify the act. True warriors do not wage wars against the innocent. Profanity is the name given to the defilement of the sanctity of human life. We call on those who claim to exercise the authority of a fatwa to pronounce that very doom, with all its moral weight, upon those who engage in this serial violation of the right to life, life as a god-given possession that only the blasphemous dare contradict, and the godless wantonly curtail. This scalp that they have added to their collection was roof to a unique brain that a million of their kind can never replace.”

Lending his voice to the condemnation of the murder of Awoonor, renowned playwright, Professor JP Clark, said the late Ghanaian writer came across as a non-conformist during his encounter with him at a pan Africa literary conference in Kampala, Ugunda, in 1962

Saddened by his death, Clark said: “I was in a state of shock to hear that Kofi Awoonor could go like that by random bullets in a country far off. It really shows the absurdity of life.” He advised all to do the best they can while alive.

CrimeSSS Nabs Ozekhome’s Kidnapper by HenryQuest(op): 7:51am On Sep 27, 2013
The Department of State Security Service(SSS), yesterday announced the arrest of one Kelvin, alleged to have masterminded the kidnapping of Mike Ozekhome. The suspect alleged to be a notorious armed robber, was arrested on September 25 by a combined team of the Nigerian Army and the operatives of the DSS.

The suspect, who is said to be on the wanted list of the security agencies for sometime now, according to a statement from the DSS, masterminded the kidnap of Mike Ozekhome on August 24, along the Auchi-Benin Rroad and a top female official of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

He was also alleged to have masterminded the kidnap of a judge of the Edo State Judiciary and several members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and one Dr. Chudi Nwike, a former deputy governor of Anambra State who was killed by Kelvin while in captivity.

The statement signed by the Deputy Director of the agency, Marylyn Ogar, said the suspect had masterminded several attacks against security personnel, carried out several armed robberies and kidnap operations in Delta, Edo, Rivers and Anambra states

According to the statement, the suspect maintained operational bases and detention camps in Warri and Kokori Community in Delta State, Ugbokolo Community in Benue State, Benin city in Edo State, and Aba in Abia State respectively.

Ogar further stated that Kelvin had, on September 18, 2013, issued a 60-day ultimatum to the Federal Government from his base in Kokori, Delta State, and threatened to wreak havoc on innocent Nigerian citizens.

Also, in a statement signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration) in Delta State, Onyire Kaneneolisa and made available to Daily Sun in Asaba, the police stated that Kelvin was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at a hotel in Benin city, Edo State capital by a combined team of the military and SSS operatives.
