PoliticsNigerians Will Beg APC  In 2019 To Continue – Momoh by HenryQuest(op): 7:47am On Jun 03, 2016
Former minister of Information, Prince Tony Momoh is one of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Erstwhile   National Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change(CPC), Momoh in this interview, examined Nigeria’s democratic journey so far as well as the activities of President Muhammadu Buhari in the last one year. He argued  that the President is in the right path in the effort at bringing the country out of economic doldrums. According to him, Nigerians in the next two years, would commence pleas that Buhari should continue in office beyond 2019.
Excerpts:

Our Democracy was 17 years old on May 29. Being one of the agitators for the return of democracy during the days of the military, how would you see us having gone so far?
If you want to look properly at the particular road you have taken, you have to know the structure of that road. Democracy as a system of government is a way people choose to have their affairs run. Some may have the military system, some may have monarchy. Some may have even fascism. But the fact is when you have democracy, we know it is one of representative government and people say democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people. But what type of democracy have we chosen? We say we want a federal structure and we have a document called the Constitution. The Constitution is very clear about the structuring of government in Nigeria. It has three tiers. At the national level, at the state level which is 36 states and at the local government, which is 774 Local governments. We must look at what the document says. At the centre, we have the lawmaking arm too – the Senate and the House of Representatives of the National Assembly. At the state level, we have the House of Assembly. Then of course, the local government level which under section seven of the constitution must be democratically elected. If you look at also where the power lies, it does not lie in the National Assembly; it does not lie with the House of Representatives. It lies with the people. Section 14 says sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria and from the constitution government derives all its powers. It means therefore that it is what the people have given to the organs of government, which is the legislature, the Executive and the judiciary; it is what the people give to them that they do.
So, it means therefore that if anybody like the National Assembly or the Executive like the governor at state level exercises any power that is not documented in the constitution, he should be called to order. The constitution is a documentation of delegated powers and who delegates these powers; the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
There is chapter four of the constitution that deals with fundamental rights and these rights are protected by the courts. Therefore, anybody whose right is infringed or there is a threat to infringe on his right can go to the High Court in a state and complain that his right should be protected. But the chapter two has the duties that you must perform. You have rights to enjoy; you have duties to perform and those duties, Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State policy – they are social; they are political, social-economic, environmental, cultural, foreign policy. They are all documented.
Since we are in a democracy, the way you practise the democracy is laid out in the Constitution. As a political association, a group of people, you now ask to be a political party. So, unless you are a political party, you cannot contest election or ask to be voted for.
Having decided to take part in the running of the state as a political party, you know what the structure is now. The two main political parties are APC and the PDP. There is something that must focus your own appearance on the scene. You must have a constitution where you show organs of party from ward level to national level and you must have a manifesto where you will say this is what I promised Nigeria on the basis of which I want to ask for their votes.
One thing about that manifesto is that you will look at what is in chapter two, the duties you will perform; what will you give to Nigerians politically, educationally, economically and so forth. You must put them there. Having put them there, you now come and register as a political party. Then you go and contest elections.
In contesting elections, it means there must be registration of voters. It means there must be accreditation of voters at the time you want to contest election. Then, there must be voting, the votes must be counted and the votes must count.
Chapter four is to be monitored by the courts. Chapter two, the courts cannot monitor. That’s why you say it is unjusticeable. Section six, subsection C of the constitution says that the courts have no power to look at chapter two. But section 22 says the media has an obligation to look at chapter two. You now see therefore that what is denied the courts is given to the media. In Nigeria, in our arrangement, the media are constitutionally the fourth estate of the realm. In other areas, it is by convention. But in Nigeria, the press has as much right to monitor what is happening as any other arm of government has the right to monitor. But the difference is that while, for instance, the National Assembly has oversight functions over the executive, the media has oversight functions over the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
How has this translated into practice in our system? I will say that at the local government level, we have destroyed that tier because it’s supposed to be elected. Only a few local governments are elected. They appoint supervisory committees and so on and so forth. At the state level or in the state elections, it is all writing of results. The State Electoral Commissioner reports directly to the governor. So, there is no democracy there. At the National level, we have been fighting to ensure that we have democracy.   I know you are a top participant in the incumbent system, can you give us a view of how the government has fared?
In 2005 or so, America said Nigeria will be a failed state by 2015 and I wrote and analyzed it and said from what Americans are saying that Nigeria will be a failed state, they are looking at it from the material aspect. But the fact is that there is a spiritual dimension to life. America is a country and Americans are creatures. Nigeria is a country and Nigerians are creatures created by the Almighty God. I’ve always said that Nigeria has a mission and Nigeria has an anointing. Nigerians will help grow the world in the next, 20, 25 years and there is nothing anybody can do about it. It’s an anointing by God Almighty. With that in view, how can Nigeria be a failed state? That twenty-something years is beyond 2015 and I believe that would not have come to pass if there had not been change in the election in 2015. You saw what Orubebe did, wanting to force a particular situation, which we thank God Almighty that it didn’t come to pass. So, Buhari being there has come at a time of unprecedented depression in our economy. Oil prices have fallen below 40 dollars. Then the Niger Delta that is laying the golden egg, you know what is happening. Instead of 2.2 million barrels a day, we have less than 1.2 million barrels a day. We are earning 1 billion dollars a month and spending $4 billion a month. It’s not done. The subsidy they said we were paying for fuel, obviously, it was all paper money and people just sat down collecting money. If you see what has happened, what Buhari said he will do, he will fight corruption, he will create jobs, he will face agriculture and of course, he will fight insurgency. Buhari is a very predictable person. He will secure this country. He will do anything to secure this country. In other words, he will fight insurgency, he will fight hostage taking, he will fight armed robbery; he will fight anybody who wants to undermine Nigeria’s economy. He will even fight those cattle rustlers and other people who are undermining other communities by destroying their hosts. He will fight them. So, there will be security in this country. It’s only after you have secured the country that you will start developing it, stabilizing it through infrastructural development. So, security, plus stability will give us prosperity. There is no magic about it and that is what Buhari has been doing.
When he started, about 14 local government areas were in the hands of Boko Haram. Now, the Boko Haram is not in control of any local government area. I don’t know whether people know that Sambisa Forest is bigger than the South West. Sambisa Forest is a massive area. It’s not like a 100 kilometers area. It’s a huge area, stretching to Cameroun and that’s where they are holed up and where the army is fighting them now.  Secondly, you will see how much is being given to capital expenditure. I don’t know if we ever gave that much to capital expenditure in our recent history. Then you will see the war on corruption. I think the latest you can look at is this fuel subsidy. You know that it’s a cartel that has been routinely sharing our patrimony through diverting the little we have to buying fuel, bringing it and people just sharing it.  The area of capital development, that’s stabilizing the system is also going to be celebrated within one year. Look at the roads that will be built; even the money he put on the second Niger bridge in the South East and lots of other areas that will be empowered.
This feeding of school children will be a massive empowering programme. There is hardly any area in this country where there is no public school. You know what it means to feed school children once a day – the millions of eggs you will need; the amount of vegetables, rice, everything. So, that will be a massive booster to agriculture. Lots of people will go into agriculture.
Looking ahead, the President has said repeatedly that he feels the pains of Nigerians, he doesn’t want to inflict pain on them and all that. People have also said that his government still has three years  but he has been unable to showcase so many bus stops within the first year. Looking forward, what do you think the government will give to Nigerians?
Are you not worried as regards the report we are having about shrinking economy, GDP dropping and all that.
How long will this last?
But you should be worried by what the people are saying that if elections were to be called today, in view of the deprivation in the polity that APC might fare badly?
I agree with you. Nobody likes to suffer.
You don’t think that could be a threat to your party even in 2019?
That’s why I said within a year or two, you will celebrate us. In fact by 2019, they will be begging us to continue in power. If by 2019, we have thousands of people who are empowered because of the economic programme we have, you think those who are empowered will not vote for us? That’s why I’m saying we have to attend to certain things. They are painful. But we plead for patience. Within a year or two, Nigerians will be celebrating Buhari.

PoliticsI Regret Serving Nigeria –orubebe by HenryQuest(op): 7:40am On Jun 03, 2016
Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, yesterday said he regretted serving Nigeria in ministerial capacity.
He rooted the reason for his comments on the criminal charges brought against him at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) by the Federal Government for alleged failure to declare his assets in 2011.
During his trial, Orubebe, who was led in evidence by his counsel, Mr. Selekowei Larry (SAN), told the tribunal that the charges against him were unfounded and uncalled for because the property for which he was arraigned does not belong to him.
In his remarks while giving evidence, Orubebe claimed he served Nigeria diligently and with energy at his disposal for six years and four months and that the payback for his service was the criminal charges brought against him unjustly.
“Let me make this point now here before this tribunal that the only regret I have for serving this country is this trial. It is very unfortunate, it is regrettable and it is shameful. I am sad and my heart is heavy because I am put on trial on mere empty land in the bush here in Abuja officially given to me by the same government I served.
“Nigerians may not know this and I wish to say it out that during the peak of the militancy in the Niger Delta, I slept with the militants in the Creek for two weeks, negotiatedwith them on how to adopt peaceful approach for their demands, and in the end, my efforts brought peace to this country and our oil companies have their peace and Nigeria was better for it in the area of security and economy because of my efforts, only to be compensated with this trial that has destabilized me.
“I still love this country but, I have a pain in my neck. I have respect for government and its policies. If the Code of Conduct Bureau had invited me for clarifications on my asset forms, I would have honoured them because it is a simple thing to do and because my conscience is clear.”
The former minister had, in his evidence, claimed that he did not declare Plot 2057 in Asokoro District of Abuja because as at the time he was leaving government in 2011, he had sold off the land to pay debt of his house rent of two years.
Orubebe told the tribunal that government allocated the land in dispute to him but that he sold it to his landlord, Akinwumi Ajibola for N10 million to offset the two-year house rent debt owed him.
The former minister said it would have been criminal for him to claim ownership of the property he had sold off and the Certificate of Occupancy handed over to the buyer before he left office.
He asked the tribunal to dismiss the charge against him because he had not breached any law as far as the property in dispute was concerned.
Another witness of the former minister, who, incidentally was the former landlord, Ajibola confirmed that Orubebe was his tenant at Drive 2, House 3, Ministers Quarters, Mabushi, Abuja, and that the tenant was indebted to him to the tune of N10 million for the two-year house rent.
Ajibola claimed to be a real estate developer and chief executive of Didention Properties Limited. He informed the tribunal that Orubebe parted with the empty land allocated to him in lieu of the debt and that the Certificate of Occupancy handed over to him at the end of the transaction. Under cross-examination by government lawyer, Mr. Mohammed Diri, the witness claimed that he did not register the Power of Attorney and the Deed of Assignment because what he bought was an empty land in the bush that cannot be registered at the time.
Meanwhile, tribunal Chairman, Mr. Danladi Umar, has adjourned judgment in the matter till June 30. The Federal Government had put Orubebe on trial on one-count charge of failure to declare in his assets form at the end of his service, the land with Plot No. 2057 allocated to him by government.

PoliticsSome Times In April; What Nigeria Must Learn From Rwanda. by HenryQuest(op): 7:27pm On Apr 12, 2016
The genocide/pogrom that took place in Rwanda 22 years ago comes to mind of people who are conversant with African history each time the month of April comes. It has been described as the deadliest genocide in human history. Over 1 million people, mostly Tutsi were massacred within a period of 100 days. The callous and inhuman nature at which the killings were carried out is highly unimaginable.

The concept of "neighbour", "friend", "husband/wife" was thrown away as neighbours, friends, husbands and wives took joy in taking each others life provided they are not from the same ethnic group.

Amazingly, 22 years after, Rwanda has been rated among the safest countries to live in the world. Infact, it ranks number one in Africa. This was revealed in a research carried out by Gallup’s Law and Order Index, a worldwide measure that gauges people’s sense of personal security in their neighbourhoods and their personal experiences with crime and law enforcement.

This therefore justifies the quote, "I have never advocated war except as a means of peace" by Ulysses S. Grant. The people of Rwanda learnt the importance of peace through war. Currently, the whole of Rwanda are observing the annual remembrance/commemoration of the events that took place between April and July, 1994. It may also interest you to note that Rwanda is the fifth largest contributor of peacekeepers worldwide. Ironical isn't it?

We have fought our own war. This time, it lasted for 30 months, yet, we have not learnt any lesson from it. The events that led to the civil war are quietly creeping up but we are too blind to see it. If the recent statements by DSS on the killing of Fulanis in Abia state sweeps down through the north, then I fear for my people dwelling among them. Reprisal attack might be the ultimate weapon for vengeance.

This is April, we must not give foreign movie producers scripts through our actions and inactions just like Rwanda 22 years ago. At this delicate stage of our existence as a multi ethnic people, the socio-political and economic implications of statements, utterances, press releases, actions and inactions must first be put into deep consideration.

Christianity EtcToday Is Holy Thursday by HenryQuest(op): 6:44am On Mar 24, 2016
Holy thursday marks the beginning of a period in the church calender known as sacred tridium, meaning the three most sacred days in the days of the year. It beginson holy thurday and ends on holy saturday. It is the period between the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus.

Today marks the holy thurday for the year 2016. It was on thursday night that Jesus was arrested by the Jews, and handed over to the authorities to be judged.

It was also on holy thursday that Jesus instituted the order of priesthood. This happpened during the passover feast otherwise known as last supper Jesus had with His apostles where He demonstrated love, humility, compassion, and exemplary leadership by washinf the feet of His apostles and commanding them to do the same to others.

Jesus instituted the sacrament of holy eucharist on holy thursday. In a common language, it is the day Jesus instituted the reception of communion by sharing bread and wine with His apostles and commanding them to do same in remembrance of Him.

In Roman Catholic church, the evening mass today is celebrated for the priests. It is known as mass of the last supper.

It was also on holy thursday that Judas Iscariot ( the apostle who betrayed Jesus) brought the Jews to Jesus and handed Him (Jesus) over to them with a kiss at the mount of Gethsemane.

Christians all over the world today remember this day as it marks the beginning of the agony and passion of Christ Jesus in the road to the restoration of the glory of mankind.

EducationImpact Of Publications: Unn No. 1 In Nigeria In Webometrics Universities Ranking by HenryQuest(op): 5:27pm On Jan 27, 2016
WEBOMETRICS just released its December 2015 ranking of Top 2000 Universities in the world based on their Google Scholar Citation profiles[First Edition (December 2015)].
It is my pleasure to inform you that UNN came 1st in Nigeria, 14th in Africa and 1389th in the world. As a matter of fact, less than 30 African Universities were ranked. Also, only UNN and University Ibadan were ranked from Nigeria, a pointer to the overall poor quality of academic publications from most Nigerian universities.
Hence, our collective efforts are paying off and UNN is now counted amongst the best in the world. We are now reaping the dividends of increased publications by UNN staff in high impact and visible journals. However, we are still a long way from getting into the top five in Africa. But it is achievable, if we intensity our publications in high impact visible journals that can be accessed and cited from all over the world.
A summary of the ranking as it concerns Africa is:

Could this be a justification for the hostile attitude and policies of most European countries towards refugees and migrants in Europe?

Read:
Two months ago, I updated something on the hardship migrants from Syria and other troubled countries in the Levant pass through in the hands of European countries where they are seeking assylum. Infact, I condemned the actions of the affected European countries.

Just yesterday, there were multiple terrorist attacks in the central city of Paris, France. To cut the story short, the attackers targeted a football stadium were France was playing an international friendly against Germany as well as a concert and some restaurants. There was pandemonium and confusion on what could have led to the attacks, how it was planned, and the people involved.

Reports emanating today suggests that one of the attackers has been identified as a refugee whose details were taken in Greece where he first landed.

This is exactly one of the main reasons why the refugees have been getting so much harsh welcome from the Europeans (apart from supposed economic migrants). Maybe this terrorist act has proven them right.
SportsRe: ‘Enyeama's Retirement Is Sad’ – Oliseh Opens Up On Crisis by HenryQuest(m): 2:19pm On Oct 09, 2015
I think Oliseh didn't learn from the mistakes of his predecessor. He should pocket his arrogance and bossy attitude any time he's on national assignment. In a a team game like Football, one needs to be psychologically balanced and prepared at all times. Crisis like this kill the morale of players. A captain should be listened to if he wants to speak. Besides, good coaches most times communicate to the players through the captain because the captain is as entastic and young as the players and he'll be able to speak in a language his colleagues would understand. I know Oliseh did this because he felt he has discovered a 29 years old goalkeeper who impressed against Tanzania. Let him be tried against Argentina then we'll judge him. Besides, why make Musa captain when Mikel is there? Mikel is older, more experienced and mature than Musa. He is also a player many others look up to. Who looks up to Musa? Who'll respect him in the team? I think oliseh is heading towrds doom. My humble opinion.

Christianity EtcToday Is The Feast Of Assumption Of Blessed Virgin Mary by HenryQuest(op):
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, informally known as the Assumption, according to the beliefs of the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and parts of Anglicanism, was the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.

The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility. While the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is the same as the Assumption, the alleged physical death of Mary has not been dogmatically defined.

In Munificentissimus Deus (item 39) Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory

In the churches that observe it, the Assumption is a major feast day, commonly celebrated on August 15. In many countries the feast is also marked as a Holy Day of Obligation.
