EducationI Dared To Be Different, UNN First Class Graduate Shares Her Experiences by HenryQuest(op): 11:15am On Jun 14, 2021
Congratulations to a strong woman who refused to succumb to challenges; a fighter who refused to be stopped against all odds.

Cheers to the one who never gave up on her dream, who dared to be different. Behold the jinx has been broken and a first graduate of the family stands tall today in glowing excellence.

Congratulations to a fine girl who refused to back out of the stormy 8 years journey. Cheers to a determined and hardworking girl who stood firm and conquered the battle. Yes; a FIGHTER!

I fought discouragement, fears and put every form of negativity behind. I refused to be held back by circumstances around me.

At 18, all mum wanted for me was marriage. We argued a number of times and I was labelled a rebellious child because I wanted to get a degree before marriage. Mum would wake me up every 2 a.m. to remind me of how poor they are and how they can’t afford me a university education, and the option left for me was marriage. I stood my ground, bought a Diploma form in 2011 without their knowledge.

Alas! The forewarned unpleasant reality of not having the wherewithal for my university education dawned on me in 2011 when UNN offered me admission to read Linguistics. All my parents could raise for me was 12K. One can imagine 12k for a whole semester. Thank God for my elder sister who came to my rescue. And reacting to my elder sister’s assistance, my elder brother said to my face and I quote “I still don’t understand why our elder sister is wasting money to send you to school. Money they could use to support our younger brother’s dream of travelling abroad. Reason being that most graduates hardly get good jobs. Every other person was against my decision to get educated except my elder sister.

Notwithstanding the hitches and struggles, I was awarded a diploma in 2013 with Distinction. Sadly, my parents didn’t appreciate my effort because they aren’t literate enough to understand what it means and takes to graduate with distinction. I kept my cool hoping to be celebrated by my second family in Aba because they are graduates. So I broke the news with excitement expecting congratulatory gestures from them, but all they could do was to undermine the feat with comments such as “You made it because of the leniency of UNN Aba campus lecturers. Do you think you can make first class in UNN Nsukka campus?” I felt very bad.

Not satisfied with a diploma cert, I decided to work in order to save money for degree. The highest paying job I could get with my certificate then was 12K monthly. My little earning and fresh memory of the challenges I faced doing diploma almost made me give up on pursuing a degree. With mixed feeling, I decided to try marriage but the relationship failed in 2015 because of genotype. I was so hurt and heartbroken that I decided not to get into another relationship. In fact, I cancelled marriage from mind. Same year, I got a job that paid better and I was able to save a little. But I was still troubled. Degree I no get, marriage I no get and I was 24.

Fast forward to December, 31st 2015, I left the family prayer meeting to go pray in seclusion. I told God: “I am done making decisions for myself. I won’t even plan for 2016 because all my plans in the previous years failed. I leave myself in your hands. Any direction your wind blows me to, I will follow. I am done struggling for a better life.” I wailed, groaned. I let out the entire burden in my heart for a fresh year. I decided I was not going to interfere in my own life affair because things obviously weren’t going as I planned.

Into the quarter of the year, I started having a strong urge to go back to school. To make matter worse, people began sending me job openings for graduates and/or asking me if I was done with my Degree, and those who knew I didn’t have a degree kept pushing me to go back to school.

While in the kitchen one evening with my elder sister, these words fell out of my mouth: “Aunty, I am going back to school.” Then a huge silence crawled into the kitchen. Everything in the kitchen paused for about a minute except for the sound produced by the boiling pot of soup. My sister smiled at me and said: “Sarah I don’t want to start what I cannot finish.” That was expected because “I am going back to school, literally means “Get ready to spend money. She was my only pillar of material support in everything.” I asked her to promise me that she will take care of my school fee while I take care of every other thing. She asked me how. I told her about the plan to WORK and STUDY. She was very skeptical about it and expressed concern about my overall wellbeing at school. I finally applied and was successfully offered admission to study Foreign Language [French] at UNN.

Meanwhile, the school fee didn’t come handy and I urgently needed money to beat registration deadline. It got to a point that I had to use the money my sister’s husband gave me to give a business partner to pay my school fee. This caused a huge problem between I, my sister and her husband. I was never trusted with money again.
School fee settled, registration done, however, there was no money for accommodation. I chatted Chizoba up begging him to allow me stay in their family house while I do house chores for them in exchange. Chizoba declined because I was just an online friend he had neither met nor known much about. Instead, he offered to help me get a female student who could squat me. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get anyone and I was left with only the option of staying with Jonathan, his friend. I agreed to stay with him. Jonathan would leave the room for me to sleep in his neighbor’s room every night.

One month into staying with Jonathan, his landlord asked me to pay him 20k to continue staying with him or leave. When the pressure from the landlord became unbearable for me, I left Jonathan’s place for Onyinye’s place. (still another connection from Chizoba). Onyinye was neither a student nor a graduate. She was an apprentice who was also struggling to survive. I had no food left. Chizoba would sneak food out of their house to bring for me. I stayed from morning to night without food. My food for a day sometimes was biscuits of N50 unless Chizoba brings food for me. Onyinye was always giving me this pity look and I became uncomfortable with it. So I left Onyinye to go stay with Chimsimdi, a new friend who accommodated me until I was able to pay my own part the rent.

Life in school was so tough that several times I thought of dropping out. However, I kept telling myself that dropping out is an act of cowardice. Most times, I shed tears when I open my book to study. I suffered severe ulcer because food was always scarce at my end. This took a toll on my concentration,

On the other hand, the pressure to get married kept coming from my mum. Most of the times, I wished I could avoid travelling home after school because each time I travelled, mum will remind me of my mates who are married. Thank God I didn’t succumb to the pressure.

After all the struggles, I graduated with a First Class Honors degree as the best in the Dept of Foreign Languages and second best in the Faculty of Arts, UNN with a CGPA of 4.76 at 28.

To all those that supported me in one way or the other, I say THANK YOU. May this story be an encouragement to those that find themselves in similar situations. Keep up the fight! There’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

PoliticsAtiku Distances Self From 2023 Campaign Posters by HenryQuest(op): 3:54pm On Jun 07, 2021
A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has said that he knows nothing about the 2023 presidential campaign posters that surfaced in Abuja recently.

VANTAGE NEWS reports that the posters seen in different parts of Abuja had Charles Soludo as Atiku’s running mate.

In a statement issued by Paul Ibe, the media adviser to the 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku said he is currently working on solutions to the myriad of challenges facing the country.

Ibe stated that it is silly for someone to link Atiku who is a member of the PDP to Soludo who is currently aspiring for the governorship seat in Anambra State under the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

He asked the general public to ignore the posters that he described as the handowrk of mischief makers.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to reports in a section of the media of campaign posters of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Prof. Charles Soludo, an aspirant in the Anambra State governorship election in parts of Abuja.

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the reports, but for the interest of those who may be misled by the disingenuous plot.

“We know nothing about the posters or those who may have promoted it.

“It is obvious that this is a work of mischief. For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku Abubakar is of the Peoples Democratic Party, while Charles Soludo is of the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA. It is silly of anyone to attempt to drag the former Vice President into an election in Anambra which outcome will be determined by the people of the state.

“Atiku Abubakar is presently preoccupied with joining hands with other well-meaning Nigerians to help in finding solutions to the myriad of challenges plaguing our nation such as insecurity and economic downturn marked by joblessness and extreme poverty.

“That explains why last Monday, the Waziri of Adamawa commissioned the headquarters of Standard Micro Finance Bank and two manufacturing plants, promoted by him in Yola to provide much-needed jobs and opportunities.

“We wish to restate that the purported 2023 campaign posters in circulation linking Atiku to Soludo is the handiwork of mischief makers and should be ignored.”

PoliticsBiafra Tweet: Fayose Mocks Buhari, Says President Cannot Operate Android Phone by HenryQuest(op): 5:11pm On Jun 02, 2021
A former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has mocked President Muhammadu Buhari for making a controversial post on twitter about repeating the civil war that led to the loss of many lives.

Buhari had tweeted, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

Although social media giants, Twitter has since deleted the tweet, Nigerians are still reacting.

Fayose, in a tweet on Wednesday, said Buhari cannot operate an Android phone, alleging that it was his social media handlers that posted tweet on his behalf.

“It is obvious that those using the President’s powers for him do not know when and where to stop their power-madness.Regrettably, Twitter may not know that Buhari is not the one operating the handle. Can our President operate Android Phone not to talk of making genocidal tweets?” Fayose asked.

Fayose, who berated Buhari for threatening genocide through the tweet, asked Twitter to hold Garba Shehu and Lai Mohammed accountable for the tweet.

He said, “A president who cannot address his own people in time of crisis can certainly not be the one tweeting on the crisis. Twitter should rather hold Garba Shehu, Lie Mohammad and co accountable.

“Nigeria is boiling everywhere and all that the President can do is to be threatening genocide up and down? Now that Twitter has dealt with our almighty President Buhari, won’t he “deal” with Twitter too? Like Trump, like Buhari.”

VANTAGE NEWS reports that Buhari actually said what was tweeted in a video that has been circulating online.

The president made the statement in the controversial tweet while briefing officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the State House, Abuja on Tuesday.

PoliticsDo Not Condemn Israel, Fani-kayode Warns Buhari by HenryQuest(op): 9:11am On May 17, 2021
Femi Fani-Kayode, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against condemning Israel or joining “in any reckless adventure against the Jewish state.”

According to Fani-Kayode, who is a former minister of aviation, doing so will have serious consequences.

He also warned the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to leave Nigeria out of what he described as “jihad against Israel.”

VANTAGE NEWS reported that Erdogan had on Friday, in phone conversation with Buhari, asked that Nigeria, as a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, stand with Palestine — another member of the organisation.

“President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by phone with President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria. Exchanging Eid al-Fitr greetings, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments,” the Turkish Presidency tweeted on Friday.

“Drawing attention to Turkey’s efforts exerted in order for the international community to teach the necessary lesson to unlawful, unjust and unscrupulous Israel due to its attacks against Palestine, President Erdogan voiced his belief that Nigeria would show solidarity with the Palestinians in this rightful cause,” it added.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, Fani-Kayode urged every Christian to stand with Israel, saying that there are over 100 million Nigerian Christians that love and revere Israel.

He said, “President Erdoghen of Turkey should leave Nigeria out of his jihad against Israel& his attempt to teach Israel a lesson. President Buhari would be wise not to condemn Israel or join in any reckless adventure against the Jewish state otherwise a terrible price will be paid.

“It is an article of faith for a every true Christian to stand with Israel. There are over 100 million Christians in this country who love & rever Israel. We pray for her every day & bless her. If we are forced to choose between the Arabs & the Jews we would choose the Jews.

“Israel can & will NEVER be defeated. If provoked she will bring all her enemies to their knees. We have enough problems of our own. Taking on the Jews would be an exercise in futility, would divide our country & would push us closer to greater conflict & possibly a civil war.

“Remember what happened in Lebanon in the 1980’s and 1990’s? God forbid it should happen here.

“A word is enough for the wise.”

I have been monitoring comments and post from these list of accounts

and here are my observation.

1. With all the killings going on in the North, from Kaduna. Katsina, Niger, Kogi, Zamfara, Bornu to mention a few. You won't see them criticing the Bandits/Kidnappers/Bokoharam or the Fulani Herdsmen who have been killing, maiming, raping both farmers, students, muslims/christian worshippers, young and old.
2. They defend everything about the government, even when is glaringly clear to be anti people.
3. They defend and praise police/soldiers needless brutality on the citizen.
4. The roam about creating threads to spread hate and tribalism
5. Any thread were Igbos are killed in the name of IPOB, they are the first to rejoice.

PoliticsBy Army Standard, Govs Ugwuanyi, Umahi Are ESN ‘deputy Commanders’ – Nnamdi Kanu by HenryQuest(op): 5:17pm On May 13, 2021
The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has reacted to a statement by the army that it has arrested the deputy commander to Ikonso, the late commander of the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN), Awurum Eze.

VANTAGE NEWS reported that the army in a statement issued by Brig Gen Mohammed Yerima, said Awurum, who is from Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State was arrested in Aba, Abia State.

Yerima in the statement said Awurum had on the 4th of May 2021 escaped when operatives of Intelligence Response Team (IRT) stormed his village house in Isiala Mbano where he was hiding, adding that “He was eventually apprehended on Wednesday, 12 May 2022, in Aba after weeks of unrelenting follow-ups by operatives.”

He added that Awurum “can be seen in several photographs posing with the fugitive terrorist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.”

Reacting to the report, Nnadi Kanu said that taking pictures with him does not make someone his deputy commander.

Kanu, in a tweet, posted a picture he took alongside the governors of Enugu and Ebonyi states; Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and David Umahi; and a foremost constitutional lawyer, Prof Ben Nwabueze.

He added that the governors and Nwabueze were ‘ESN Commanders’ since they can be seen in the same photograph with him.

Kanu said, “Since standing beside or taking a photo with me makes you an #ESN “deputy commander”, perhaps the very preeminent & foremost constitutional lawyer, Prof. Nwabueze, @DaveUmahi, & Gov. Ugwuanyi are all #ESN deputy commanders.”

PoliticsContract Allegation: Fr Mbaka Issues Explosive Reply To Garba Shehu, APC (video) by HenryQuest(op): 5:48am On May 03, 2021
The Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has blasted presidential spokesman Garba Shehu and the All Progressives Congress for attacking him and threatening to report him to the Pope.

The attack on Mbaka by Shehu and the APC came after the fiery Catholic priest had called for the resignation or impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over rising insecurity in the country.

While Shehu accused the clergyman of asking for contracts for his support for Buhari, the president’s party APC threatened to expose and report him to Pope, who is the supreme leader of the Catholic Church worldwide.

But in his reply during Sunday mass, Fr. Mbaka said it’s only stupid people who attack message from God. “I’m not afraid of anybody in this job, I’m doing this job for God. So if anybody says he’s angry for what is being said, whatever he wants to do to himself he should do. I’m a messenger of God, so you should be stupid to be attacking a message from God. No matter who you are God is above all of us, so if you don’t feel happy that God is revealing secret to you; God is giving you expo, it’s an expo – instead of him destroying you silently, he tells you look at what you should do, you are not doing well in so so places. So why should Mbaka be attacked by any reasonable human being? Whether you call yourself Shehu or what there is no need for that. I don’t even need to explain what I said once it’s from the oracle of God, my work is to listen to God, if he says I should talk I will say it and take my leave, Fr. Mbaka said.”

The priest said that in Nigeria, if you say the truth you will be attacked, but that he will survive the attack of those attacking men of God whom he described as crocodiles who want to eat the fishes in the fish pond.

He said instead of those in government attacking the messenger, they should rather challenge the truth; whether there is insecurity or not, whether there is good hospitals in this country or not.

On the allegation of giving him contract, Fr. Mbaka said it’s a laughable childish accusation. He said, “whoever is saying that is a shame to himself and shame to the people he is representing. Father Mbaka’s voice came from the spiritual, so what I’m saying is unchallengeable.”

He said he has been silent because he was waiting for them to change until God said he should speak. Mbaka boasted that he is not just a priest but also a job provider, saying that direct salary earners from him monthly are not less than 23,000. “So the person challenging father Mbaka, how many people are you feeding? So if I talk you talk because the government is paying you, do you know how many people I’m paying? The priest quizzed rhetorically.

On the threat by Buhari’s party APC to report him to the Pope, Fr. Mbaka laughed it off and said that Rome would clap for him if they hear that he is challenging evil government. Emphasizing more on that, the priest gave a funny analogy using one of the best footballers in the world, Lionel Messi. He said, “you will go and report Messi to FIFA that he plays too much, they will make him soccer ambassador. The insecurity I’m talking about can affect them, even the Shehu who is talking the bandits can kill him. How will a whole Nigeria not have a quality hospital and the president will be flown abroad when he is sick, what a shame!

He said if the federal government’s problem is that he is blessing Nnamdi Kanu that he does not have apology for that because the IPOB leader is his brother and spiritual son.

Fr. Mbaka said many more in his Sunday message and you can watch the full video from the link below:

Our correspondent gathered that the student apparently made different attempts to take his own life between Wednesday and Friday before he eventually succeeded in hanging himself.

VANTAGE NEWS learnt that his phone was seized by a lecturer on examination supervision duty after he was caught cheating with it while writing BCH 353 exam on Wednesday, 10th March.

Daniel’s course mates who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that he last came to school after the incident on Wednesday. Some of them believe his quest to take his own life was due to depression that he suffered after he was caught engaging in examination malpractice.

His lodge mates at his residence in the Odim Gate area of the university community where the ugly incident happened told VANTAGE NEWS that Hypo bleach mixed with dye, hair relaxer and Captain Jack liquor were found in his room.

They also reported that rope tied in the ceiling of his room, knife, syringe and belt were also found.

According to them, it seemed he had attempted to take his life through the items but was unsuccessful.

Daniel eventually hung himself at the balcony in the second floor of the three storey building where he fell from the rope and landed on the floor, suffering a broken leg.

He was rushed by neighbours to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead in the early hours of Saturday.

Confirming the incident, the President of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry Students, UNN chapter, Silas Ijaja, said, “the information reaching me through the closest person is that the guy attempted to kill himself with corrosive chemical, relaxer and strong ethanol he mixed and drank but it did not work. He then used rope to hang himself from the balcony of his room where he fell from and fractured his leg. He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead on Saturday.

“It is obvious he died of depression over the incident that happened in exam hall on Wednesday. It may not also be unrelated to his inability to cope with the pressure of the ongoing examination. We have a lot to read and write this period and it is driving so many students into depression,” he added.

All efforts made to contact the Head of the Biochemistry department and school authority prove abortive.
