Hensben, leave all these things. Tell yourself the practical truth.
If you don't know how to speak English well In our own society. It's definitely going to serve as a hindrance to you in certain walks of life.

Factos, if you want to be a pilot today, you must learn the language well. If you wanted to work at the UN, you must learn the language.
This is a practical application, not a sentimental one. English language is spoken by more than 4 billion people worldwide. Not knowing the language does hinder your social progress in our society.

I don't know what you're defending. You've been advised to maybe use Google translator. On this platform, we all speak English or it's variations which we understand. When you do, it's usually difficult to understand yours. You usually fail in effective communication.
Sometimes you write long paragraphs without comma or full stop or good spacing. All these make it more difficult to decipher what you're saying.
Please learn the language better for us to understand you better.
Who told you I don’t speak English, must I speak it well when I am not teaching English language to anybody. But nonetheless I’m not the type that don’t learn so for me to speak English language to this level shows I actually learnt.

That's what you get for calling me mentally enslaved when that is what word is loaded.

I would like any Igbo man here to tell me when last he revered amadioha, or went to an ofala or new yam festival. Or believes in the supremacy of our kings in the village as our highest political authority. Or officially taught their children the Igbo language.
Our culture is dead. Nothing to chestbeat
Its not dead because culture is an ideology, it’s inside of us.

Africans take pride in speaking language like English , French because those are the languages Africans were taught in schools from formative years up to the university level. Most European countries are taught in their own local language and then a foreign language is added as optional( like we have French in some schools in Africa) . Africans are not as privileged as their European counterparts who weren’t really forced to learn and adopt a foreign language like English as lingua Franca .

Someone like Wole Soyinka takes pride speaking English language because that’s the language of instruction in Nigeria where he had most of his education. If the prof had been spanish born and bred in Spain he would probably have maintained that same pride writing books in Spanish language , getting international recognition doing it too. This is where I have issue with Reno’s point . He added people like Wole Soyinka who takes pride in speaking and writing English ( a foreign language ) , to a list of those who achieved great things with native names and then in the next paragraph he’s criticizing other Africans who do exactly same just because they bear white man’s name. I no just understand his point with those two contradicting paragraph.

Like I said earlier , I don’t think it makes much sense mocking u that didn’t grow to speak and learn English as first or second language like most people here.
You made a good point. As for Wole Soyinka I that’s his occupation and he should be good at it, I think he read englsih and literature as a course. I am good at my profession too. But when speaking informally you don’t mock people for not good at it, correction is allowed though. It’s just like a Spanish man laughing at a German for not speaking Spanish fluently.

You can't see the unbridled joy I have right now seeing that none of them even recognize what they're fighting for. cheesy cheesy

See the way they all rushed me when I suggested adopting a universal language. It struck straight at the heart of our tribal awareness, when in essence, nobody even identifies what that is. cheesy

Imagine the heaviest sense of irony they all feel on the realization that they are castigating a language they are in fact learning, speaking and passing down to their own offsprings. cheesy

Isn't it funny?? cheesy I have asked 4 different people what these African traditions they are all raving about is in the 1st place and that was the END. grin grin
People suddenly realized they were fighting for nothing. They were just emotional and sentimental.

I WON. I won because logic would always trump sentiments and emotions.
Ive answered you before; language and culture is self value induced. Be proud and real with yourself and people will value you more. It is an identity, the day you lose your identity you become a wonderland in thought.

There is a reason I am asking you guys what exactly are the "African traditions" we're talking of and are proud of. grin grin

Secondly, you guys keep saying"white man's language" in a derogatory tone as if English should be hated. If you think it should be, why are both of us communicating in ENGLISH grin grin grin
Nobody is saying English should be hated, you are the one undermining African culture and language because we are not creative yet. When Africans will start being productive and exporting their product with written Yoruba just like the Chinese you will then realize how comical your suggestion is. Wizkid started essence with Yoruba intonation did it stop the music from going far.

I read everything from hensben’s initial post U responded to and subsequent posts that followed; I know u didn’t start the whole insults/diatribes. Well, personally I feel u should’ve just ignored the first guy that struck out ur posts and ended it with with an offensive post.

I’m not holding u by my standards o, but personally I would’ve just ignored him and continue the discussion with more polite people that had commented on the topic. At most , I would report the post and move on with the discussion with someone else.

As regards the topic itself I understand the point Hensben was trying to make , tho using that Reno’s post on IG as the basis for making a a case for the way he writes English messed things up for him.

I don’t know how Reno thinks , but I really do not see the correlation between someone bearing an English name(which he was christened when he was a toddler and has no control over ) and being unable to speak their native language . English is the language of learning in Nigeria,it’s ironic most of the people he mentioned that became great with their native names actually speak the English language perfectly well ( I know some of them even wrote books in English language that won them international recognition ); So I don’t really understand what point he was trying to make. In the course of the discussion I discovered English seem not to be Hensben’s first or second language , so it’s understandable some of the basic rules of English language he’s unable to observe when he writes . I would not mock/castigate/blame him for this.

Personally I do not think a universal language is adoptable . I remember someone ( I don’t know if it was you ) pointed it out that having a grasp of the English language is one of the pre-conditions for u to work in the UN, but it’s actually funny that the Chinese representatives will always choose to speak their language at the general assembly knowing fully well most listeners don’t even understand “go” or “come” in mandarin. I did a little check on google that revealed with a population of little above 1.4billion , just 10million people in China speak English . Less than 1% of their population don’t speak English despite the country having a literacy level of 98.6% .

I’m not the best with figures but to me those figures above are saying the most populous country on earth with over 1.4billion has refused to Learn English nor any other potential universal language for reasons best known to them. So how will the dream of universal language u desire be achieved ?
Reno said only Africans take pride in speaking foreign languages, whereas they can’t speak their native language. I brought it here because some handle take pride in correcting my English and even go as far as mocking me which is comical when you are not British . I have a British friend who is a teacher, no time he has ever mocked me because of English because he understand i am not British, he even have interest in pigin because he has nigerians as brethren in jehovah witness who communicate with pigin sometimes unto naija things.

Roland let me give a better illustration of my point from present happenings.

Take the Hausa language. After the infringement of Islam into our part of Africa, the fulanis went on a religious conquest and successfully conquered many smaller satellite tribes. Vast majority of them co-opt the Hausa language. Today someone from Adamawa in the east will go all the way to the sokoto in the west and still understand them.

Because of the unity of their language, they were able to even form a sociopolitical system that has worked for all of them. Many years ago someone from borno will not understand someone from sokoto, but that's not the case today. Today they see themselves as one and are united in the same causes.

This is as apt my point as any. Same languages help in uniting people.
They are United indeed, with all those killings coming out from there. Oga there is no unity there but cheating, some persons are sitting on the head of the rest.

Why are you people dragging donjapete grin he is correct

If you remove language limitations, cultural differences and religious differences, we can all unite as one

Besides what's special about languages? That requires preservation, if you think that it's efficient to be battling translations in the future because you can't let go of some tribal affiliations, you are a joker

English language is like a river, it welcomes terms and words from other languages, it has been diluted so much that it's no longer what its original speakers used

If the argument is which is better or easier to learn, then that's a different conversation but we humans need only 300k words to communicate properly

In a day you don't use more than 2000 words, if a language is broadly used and it's easily accessible, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't become a general language for the world

All these tribal hype and cultural protections aren't helping anybody, they provide aesthetic appeal and sow unnecessary divisions among people that don't have any reason to be divided
Good, that is because it’s just a mere language, nothing special, just like every other languages out there. So holding the language to high esteem just because the original owner control the economy of the world is myopic. Are you aware there was a time Hebrews, Greek languages dominated the world before English hijacked it. Time will come English language will no longer be yardstick for anything but a mere language.

I'm sure I'm not the first person to tell you that reading your posts induces headache sometimes.
From poor punctuations to wrongful spelling and mixing up words.
Yes bro, you do fail in your communication. Yours is not the occasional spelling mishap or autocorrect blunder but an inability to master the language all of us here understand and use to transmit information to each other. I'm not actually trolling here, I'm pointing out a particular weakness.

People don't make sense when they say, it's not necessary learning English. Well, pick a language then that all of us will understand. It's not mental slavery, it's common sense.
If you claim not to understand me then how come you reply my comment. It’s mental slavery, you will not know now. China that are doing well today didn’t need English to become relevant but ideas and creativity. Afrobeats is selling today but they mostly use pigin English, Yoruba and Igbo, that’s the advantage of being yourself. So you saying you don’t understand what I say but you can communicate with pigin English is pure mental slavery. If you are British I will understand. As far as you are not British or American no way your English can be 100 percent, starting from intonation, diction and pronunciation so you pointing out my mistakes when you are not British is “I too know mentality” or probably to embarrass me which make me laugh. Imagine you correcting my English in front of a British man, you have automatically devalue yourself not me. You will know this later in life.

This is not an excuse to not to learn your lingua franca. Every person on that list knows how to express themselves very well in English and use it to transmit their knowledge.

Furthermore, Our native languages are dying out and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Language is only afterall a means of communication. Different languages have always acted as a bridge in society.
An effect that highlights our differences as a specie
.

If losing our languages mean we {humanity} get to be united as a whole. I'm all for it. Someday, one can get to any point of the globe and not be hindered by an inability to understand the other.
And people liked this comment, smh, it is finished for africa, Nigeria mostly. But is there anything I write in English that you don’t understand, am I mixing any language to English I write. Bringing out errors or sometimes wrong sentences which you still understood is not correction but mental slavery. Get that.

Its unfortunate people don’t even know quality footballers this days, just score or assist you become a good footballer all of a sudden, no one is interested in doing eye test and see the overall play of the said player to ascertain his level of quality. Pulisic is mentally and physically weak to even be rely on, he goes to the ground at every slight touch and start behaving like earthworm while on the floor, this is why I don’t fancy Neymar also, they goes to the ground at every slight and tackle and start complaining and whining, they disrupt play and kill the mentality of the team which results to complacency and then lose or draw.

what exactly has marina achieved as director recently, she good but the best director? hell no!! Bayern director should win all best awards. such a well run club. youth promotion. quality buys elite standards. not like Chelsea that need transfer ban to promote our youth (eg) mount, james. or transfer pursuit failure to even consider them (eg) chalobah. so again what are her achievements!!!!huh
Its easy to be a director in Bayern than in Chelsea seeing that they play in a one horse league with monopoly to sign the best players there. England is competitive both in signings and winning trophies so it is more hectic and stressed out when negotiating. Getting players that will fit the league is not easy unlike in Bayern. Bring Bayern squad to epl and see how their competitive level in ucl will drop due to fatigue from local competition. Bayern are always physically and mentally ready to play European football, even when they lose their local game once a while they don’t feel bothered because they will still win and if they don’t win it’s nothing to worry about. As it stand now their goal every season is mostly ucl. So Marina winning best director is worth because her team won ucl and she did a good business for couple of seasons now.
