Mastercard and Visa introduced a security code which is called Securecode for Mastercard and ipin for Visa card. Now, SecureCode does not come to your phone, it is a password secretly known to you generated by processes that vary from bank to bank while Ipin is being done at ATM's. OTP means One-time-Password which could be in soft mode of hardware. You can either generate OTP with an Hardware or you receive it via sms, this also vary from bank to bank with different limits. For example Stanbcibtc uses SMS OTP, while Zenith and most banks uses SMS OTP and Hardware.

As I have said OTP is used in authorising either a cash transaction or a non-cash transaction. Example of cash transaction is using your card online or internet banking transfer of funds, a noncash transaction could be like adding a beneficiary to your internet banking.

I hope my explanation is clear enough. If you've got both cards and experience, I'm also happy to bring to your notice that I have managed ATM cards when I was at intercontinental bank(Defunct). I also have all the cards and have internet banking for all my accounts which I use day in day out. I am a staunch supporter of cashless transactions. Please take correction.

It will also interest you to know that SecureCode is being disable on use of MasterCard which I think same goes for Visa card to be using OTP always. Policy keeps changing.

Point of correction, OTP is not exclusive to MasterCard, or visa. OTP is simply for transaction verification, which could either be a cash or non-cash transaction. Internet banking also uses OTP to authorise any activity.

I've got both debit card types and i'm talking from experience.
With Visacard, you'll need an ipin for any online transaction while with Mastercard, OTP is certain.
visa card ipin is different to the normal visa card pin just as otp is not a mastercard's pin, gerrit?
