Science/Technology / Physicist Can Predict Wars Using Mathematical Algorithms by heroshark(m): 11:40am On Apr 23, 2016 |
Wars can often seem like series of random events and
attacks without any pattern or reason behind them.
Surprisingly, physicist Sean Gourley and a team of
researchers have found a mathematical equation
that can be used to not only model past wars
perfectly, but that can predict the trends of
attacks in future and ongoing conflicts. Sean began
the project hoping to create a database from
various sources, to accurately collect every piece of
news that occurs. What his team didn’t expect to
find was a pattern in the attacks of wars, all related
down to one very simple equation. This TED talk is
incredibly fascinating, and as it turns out, all wars
actually follow the exact same trend. Gourley reports that the path, leading up to the conclusion he and his interdisciplinary team drew, was not an easy one. Finding trends within warfare and insurgency overlaps many academic disciplines, so many in academia created a lot of friction to the project as it didn’t really have a home in one subject. Gourley claims that he was criticized for not focusing fully on the discipline he was good at, but also learning about other disciplines which he didn’t know enough about, according to Ozy. His research on warfare found that all conflicts had a downward trend with a slope around 2.5 . This related the number of people killed in an attack to the number of attacks for a given death toll. At first this data seemed random, but they found that when plotted on a logarithmic scale, it resulted in an almost perfect descending trend. Iraq was the first conflict they looked into, but as they began digging deeper into past conflicts, they found that nearly every war in history yielded the same exact results. As they plotted more and more wars, all of the data clustered around a slope of 2.5, meaning that there was some kind of similarity between every known human conflict. The equation is as follows: P(x)=Cx P is the probability of the event, x is the number killed, C is a constant, and α is the slope of the conflict’s trend line. This is a surprisingly simple equation that in theory describes every human conflict that will ever take place, or has ever taken place. As they thought about these numbers more, they determined that α is really the structure of the insurgency in a war. Using this formula, Gourley claims that governments and military organizations should be able to develop strategies all based around how to change the α value, therefore potentially ending a war. A conflict that will continue, maintains a slope of around 2.5, so the key is to find some way to push that trend either higher or lower. Pushing α higher would mean fragmenting the insurgent groups and making them weaker, eventually leading to a cease fire in conflict. Pushing α lower would mean pushing groups together, making them stronger and more robust, but capable of being defeated. For the most part, this research has yet to be adopted by military powers to predict and organize attacks, but through further study, it could become a driving factor in war strategy. The goal should ultimately be to end conflicts, and through mathematical planning and calculations, finding the pathways to those “cease fires” may just become a little easier. |

Crime / Man Threw His Mother Into An Abandoned Well In Anambra State. by heroshark(m): 10:43am On Apr 10, 2016 |
THERE was pandemonium in Ezigbo village, Igbo-Ukwu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday, April 7, 2016, when a 30-year-old man, Ejike Nwankwo Ohagba ran amok and threw his mother into an abandoned well in his father’s compound. He also used blocks to kill her in the well. Our source said the suspect had in September last year allegedly killed two of his siblings in the same well, set his family house ablaze and disappeared only to reappear in the community last week to continue his killing spree. On the fateful day, the source said, the suspect’s mother, late Mrs Christiana Nwankwo Ohagba, a widow, took off from where she was taking refuge since her family house was burnt to do some farming with a 14-year old boy, Chiemerie at the family compound. Meanwhile, the source said, the suspect was hiding somewhere within the compound, with his mother completely unaware of the danger lurking around the premises. As Sunday Sun learnt from the source, it was Chiemerie who first saw Ejike and alerted the deceased that the suspect was in the compound. Chiemerie escaped but the deceased could not as the suspect swooped on her. After wrestling with him to free herself in vain, she was thrown into the well by the suspect who went ahead to gather blocks and started throwing them into the well to ensure that she did not survive. They said it was Chiemerie who reported the attack on them to other members of the community after running for a distance from the scene of the incident. But before help could come, the widow was already dead in the well and the suspect varnished again. Police and the local vigilante were invited to help and bring out her body from the well. Reacting to the incident, the traditional ruler of Igbo-Ukwu community, Igwe Martin Eze, Idu of Igbo-Ukwu, said he was still in shock over the incident and actually dumbfounded. The monarch said the incident was reported to the police. He implored the federal and state governments to set up rehabilitation centres in many communities where people could be rehabilitated when they begin to exhibit unusual behaviour. He also said that jobs should be created to get the youths employed to reduce the level of hardship which he noted was responsible for increase in crime in the society. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Ali Okechukwu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said he was yet to confirm the incident.

Romance / If Your Partner Does Any Of These 5 Things, You Should Never Let Them Go by heroshark(m): 1:35pm On Mar 28, 2016 |
Relationships are more complicated in modern
times, than past generations. There are more
external influences, pressures and awareness than
ever before. Societal pressures are more varied
than ever, telling you to feel this way or another.
There are patterns of behavior and intention that
you should be on the lookout for. The presence of
any of these patterns means a high potential for a
strong productive relationship. 1. if They Can Calm You Down At one point or another, despite best efforts and intention, we get very emotional. Whether livid, depressed, anxious, or any other self destructive behavior, a person that can see your needs and meet them is a keeper. Sometimes, though, a person brings 'balance' to your life at an unnecessary price. Your independence, confidence, self love and sense of freedom should always be present. 2. if They Share Your Sense Of Humor Laughter is a crucial spice of life. Everyone's flavor is different than the next. If you find someone that not only appreciates your palate but expresses some deliciousness of their own, that's a treasure. 3. if You Have The Same Hobbies And Interests Leisure activities of every sort are not only ways to refine our expressions but also ways to unwind and recover. Having your special someone interested in the same hobbies and entertainment options as you makes life easier and more enjoyable. It's very revealing when you can relax with someone. 4. If There Is Respect At All Times Respect is a massive corner stone in the foundation of every relationship. Respect is formed from awareness and reliability. Through respect, trust is gained, and with these formations your bonds will deepen. This is hard to do all the time, so as long is they are putting forth effort. 5. if They Don't Let you Get Away With Bullshit Obviously your significant other should always support and nurture you as well as they can. In order for this support to remain product, your lover must have the mutually understood ability to call you out when you are not acting right. Not only do they need the ability but you must remain receptive to criticism. 1 Like |
Science/Technology / Albert Einstein Begged His Daughter To Protect This by heroshark(m): 1:20pm On Mar 28, 2016 |
Albert Einstein was a famous physicist, whose work is still a
cornerstone of modern physics. Einstein wrote the theory of
relativity. This theory states the laws of physics are the
same everywhere and that any observed difference is based
on the time and place of the observer. His brilliance was
particularly noteworthy as he had a consistent knack of
explaining extremely complex ideas in simple and relatable
terms. He wrote many letters and gave multiple lectures on
a variety of fields of study and concepts. His granddaughter,
Evelyn Einstein, donated 1,400 letters to the Hebrew
University. Albert left strict instructions that the content of
the letters were not to be published for two decades after
his death. He did this in the hope that in that period of time
humanity would grow and mature. One of the letters was for
Lieserl Einstein, Albert's other daughter. While the letters
should not be published for at least two decades preceding
his death he states that the letters should remain
confidential until ' society is advanced enough to accept
what I will explain '. Below I have taken excerpts from this
particular letter to highlight his meaning. The letter's focus is
on the power and fundamental presence of love. He urges
humanity to never forget how to express, recognize and
appreciate this life giving power. "To give visibility to love, I
made a simple substitution in my most famous equation. If
instead of E = mc2, we accept that the energy to heal the
world can be obtained through love multiplied by the speed
of light squared, we arrive at the conclusion that love is the
most powerful force there is, because it has no limits." This
is true love and intention have limitless potential, only
through our lack of imagination and faith that we, humanity
as a whole, limit ourselves. No matter what breakthroughs or
developments occur in any field of study the reason for the
study and desire should be remembered. Through
understanding we build the foundation to accept and love
ourselves and the universe we live in. "If we want our
species to survive, if we are to find meaning in life, if we
want to save the world and every sentient being that inhabits
it, love is the one and only answer. Perhaps we are not yet
ready to make a bomb of love, a device powerful enough to
entirely destroy the hate, selfishness and greed that
devastate the planet. However, each individual carries within
them a small but powerful generator of love whose energy is
waiting to be released." There the legitimacy and
authenticity of this letter are in question as the original is
nowhere to be found. Skeptics theorize that an anonymous
author used the famous Sites In name to bring attention to
his words. Either way the words are valid and the notion is
clear. |
