Ahead of its presidential primaries scheduled for December 6, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole candidate for the 2015 election. The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the party took the decision Thursday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. The position follows a similar decision by the PDP governors’ forum and the party’s Board of Trustees, BOT. The two organs had earlier endorsed the president on Wednesday. The decision means no candidate, except Mr. Jonathan, can seek to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the PDP. At Thursday’s meeting, the governor of Niger state, Muazu Aliyu, who was first to speak, told the meeting that all PDP governors had in their meeting on Wednesday “unanimously without any reservation decided to endorse the sole candidature of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 election”. Hello Nairalanders, A friend of mine needs to make up her mind whether or not to pay to join this Trevo thingy. I am not really a "networking marketing" person especially considering the funny news we hear every now and then about it. But there is this colleague who has literally been on my friend's neck, asking her to join. Left to me, she shouldn't join. but then, I thought it would be nice to also ask for independent views based on what you guys might already know about it. Are you into Trevo already or do you know someone who is? Kindly share the much you know about it. I am all ears. Help a friend. Thanks |

Oduah's enemies are really out to finish her... If she is indeed guilty of all these allegations, then it's most unfortunate... Read below: ..... Twenty-four hours after her claim to have acquired a Masters degree from the St. Paul’s College in the United States was punctured, PREMIUM TIMES has uncovered another false claim by our embattled Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah. This time, the minister lied on oath to the Nigerian Senate, claiming another American ‘university’, Pacific Christian University awarded her an honorary doctorate degree in 1998. Mrs. Oduah made the claim in a 7-page resume she distributed to Nigeria’s 109 senators during her confirmation hearing on July 2, 2011. On page four of the document, the minister claimed the university, which she said was based in Glendale, awarded her an honorary doctorate in Business Administration. It was based on this document that she was grilled and eventually confirmed by the lawmakers. But investigations by PREMIUM TIMES suggest that no university called Pacific Christian University exists in the United States. The U.S. Department of Education, through its National Centre for Education Statistics, keeps an up-to-date database of all public libraries and educational institutions in the country – public, private and colleges. PREMIUM TIMES reporters spent hours on Wednesday searching this database. Our reporters searched by state (California), city (Glendale) and name of institution (Pacific Christian University). Yet, nothing came up in the name of the university Mrs. Oduah claimed gave her an honorary doctorate. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/152958-aviation-minister-stella-oduah-in-fresh-fake-doctorate-degree-scandal.html |

After so long on the now scrapped F&F plan on MTN, I recently switched to Trutalk, loaded N200 and was given N300 bonus, I then went on to register my two M2U numbers (*380*1*MTN Number#) and got confirmation that the numbers have been registered. Only for me to start making calls. See me, se gbege, after a while, I noticed that when I make calls to my two registered M2U numbers, MTN deducted from my main account as against the bonus they willing gave me themselves (abi, I beg them to give me before ni). I called MTN Customer Care severally to complain and all they had to say was "sorry, it was a mistake", another agent said, "sorry, for now, you can't use your M2U bonus to call numbers that were on your old F&F plan (even though the plan no longer exists)". Na im I tire o, I con been dey wonder. Now my fellow Nairalanders, my questions are: 1. I am the only one this broad day cheating/intentional misinformation has happened to? I doubt. 2. Why didn't they tell customers all the conditions attached before asking us to switch plans (and sometimes, they even go ahead to switch our plans themselves without warning customers prior)? 3. What steps are the NCC, Customer Protection Agency and other relevant Government Agencies taking to STOP these rip offs of Nigerians by these cunning telecomms companies? 4. Shey na like this e go dey go? Happy New Year, my people (that's in less than 6 hrs) |

My dear fellow Nairalanders, it was like a bad joke when I learnt about Airtel banning the use of BB data plans on non-BB devices starting from 3rd December, 2013... I think the worst hit would be Samsung and Android users like me. I do know that the practice was not illegal, although it was quite an economical option. Why they stopped it is anyone's guess. So, my simple question is, what better alternatives do we have now But something tells me that when one door closes, another opens.... It's just a matter of time.MTN? GLO? ETISALAT?? What do we do?? |

A controversial bill seeking to allow public officers operate foreign bank accounts passed the second reading at the House of Representatives on Wednesday. Under the extant Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 2004, it is criminal for a public officer to operate a bank account outside Nigeria. The bill that passed the second reading on Wednesday sought to amend this law “so as to make the leave of the Bureau necessary for a public officer to maintain or operate a bank account outside Nigeria.” One of the supporters of the bill, Mr. Bamidele Faporosi, argued that the current law was “weak and ineffective,” as no public officer had been successfully prosecuted for flouting it. He explained that the amendment proposed included a proviso that the public officer must get the approval of the bureau before opening such an account. He claimed that the disclosure would remove the secrecy surrounding foreign accounts. Faporosi argued further, “Today, people are operating such accounts by proxy or even in the open because they know that nothing will happen. “This amendment says you can operate the account but this must be with the leave of the bureau. “People now know that there will be punishment for non-disclosure.” Another lawmaker, Mrs. Aisha Dahiru from Adamawa State, told the House that the secrecy surrounding foreign accounts encouraged “the monumental corruption” in the country. But some members expressed reservations, fearing that the proposal would simply give public officers a licence to stash more government funds in private accounts overseas. For example, the Deputy House Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, held the view that the bill “stands logic on its head.” He noted, “This amendment can actually encourage corruption rather than reduce it. “Why not say public officers should operate domiciliary accounts in the country?" www.punchng.com/news/reps-move-to-allow-public-officers-operate-foreign-accounts-2/ |
The Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) has set aside N15 billion to pay allowances of unemployed graduates participating in its Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS). Head of its GIS, Akubo Adegbe, disclosed this to newsmen in Minna on Sunday. Mr Adegbe said each of the 50,000 participants to be recruited for the internship programme would earn N25, 000 monthly. He said the scheme was aimed at providing participants with requisite experience in various disciplines preparatory to securing jobs. Mr Adegbe said the graduates would be placed in firms and organisations, non-governmental organisations and selected government agencies on a one-year internship. “The interns are expected to acquire professional skills, training and work experience to improve their job-placement opportunities.” “The Federal Government will be responsible for paying monthly stipends to them, while participating institutions will be expected to provide adequate opportunities for training and mentoring,” he said. Mr Adegbe said that the scheme would enhance chances of the 50,000 unemployed graduates through improvement on their skills during the internship programmes. He urged the graduates to ensure that they registered for the scheme. The management of SURE-P funds, drawn from savings from government spending on petrol subsidy, has been hit by controversy and allegation of mismanagement. The government promised to use the funds to address unemployment and infrastructure. The Senate said the government has failed to provide names of the beneficiaries of funds already paid out. Worse, the senate committee on SURE-P said last week the government has failed to account for N500 billion of the total sum. www.premiumtimesng.com/news/149793-sure-p-pay-unemployed-graduates-n25-thousand-monthly.html |
While delaying marriage has advantages -- a lower divorce rate, higher income for women and fewer and less intense arguments between spouses -- studies show there also may be benefits to tying the knot before age 30. However, there is such a thing as marrying too young. Research shows that marriages beginning when a woman is 18 are twice as likely to end in divorce as those beginning when she is 22. Below are five reasons to get married in your 20s. 1. It could make you happier. The highest percentage of people ages 20 to 28 who consider themselves "highly satisfied" with their lives are married, as opposed to single or cohabiting. What's more, the largest number of women who described their marriage as "very happy" tied the knot when they were 24 to 26. A 2010 study found that "the greatest indicated likelihood of being in an intact marriage of the highest quality is among those who married at ages 22-25." 2. You'll make more money (at least if you're a man). An analysis revealed that among men in their mid-30s, those who married in their 20s had the highest levels of personal income. Economists have found, in general, that married men earn more than single men -- even when you control for other factors like age and education. 3. You'll have more sex. Couples who marry in their 20s tend to have more frequent sex than those who marry later. Researchers say that "a four year increase in age at marriage is associated with a couple having sex about one time less per month." What's more, married people as a whole have more sex than their single counterparts. 4. You'll drink less alcohol. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior found that married and engaged young adults reported lower frequency of drunkenness than those who are not in a serious romantic relationship. Laying off alcohol has many health benefits, including weight loss, better sleep, better skin and a reduced risk of some cancers. 5. There's nothing to be gained from waiting -- if you think you're ready. We certainly aren't advocating a rush to the altar, but if you feel like you're prepared for that next step, go for it. Research says there's no advantage to delaying marriage just for the sake of delaying it. A 25-year-old person who meets an excellent marriage prospect would be ill-advised to pass up that opportunity only because he/she feels not yet at the ideal age for marriage. Furthermore, delaying marriage beyond the mid-twenties will lead to the loss during a portion of young adulthood of any emotional and health benefits that a good marriage would bring. www.m.naij.com/news/52062.html |
He's 23, he dropped out of Stanford, and his start-up is backed by some of the biggest names in Silicon Valley venture capital. Evan Spiegel, founder of Snapchat, could be the next dotcom billionaire from central casting - but only if he's right that people will pay for a social media experience. Snapchat - for those of you who are over 25 - is a wildly popular mobile app that lets users communicate by sending each other photos which automatically delete after a few seconds. When Evan Spiegel visited London this week - his first time in the UK - he came and gave me a demo. His app was only launched in September 2011, and while he is not giving out any numbers, he says it is now on a quarter of all UK smart-phones, which means as many as seven million British people may be Snapchatting. I'm definitely not the core demographic and I struggle with the idea that my friends would want to click on a picture of the coffee I'm drinking. But Snapchat's founder says the idea of "ephemeral media" - social interactions that did not leave a trace online - is very powerful, and so it has proved. Spreading the idea was hard in the first few months. I assumed his fellow students would have been the guinea-pigs but he tells me, "everyone at Stanford is making an app", so they weren't that keen on helping him. (Does anybody ever finish their degree at the Californian university?) But it was in schools where it did take off early in 2012, with teenagers rapidly learning that it was better than social networks for talking to friends without the whole world prying in. That pattern has led to two common assumptions about Snapchat - that its prime use is for "sexting", the sending of explicit pictures between teenagers, and that it poses a major threat to Facebook. Evan Spiegel shows he is already the practised diplomat in dealing with both issues. "It is really easy to jump to that conclusion" he says about sexting, while the data suggests that Snapchat is being used all day, in a wide variety of contexts, and much of the traffic is between women users. Facebook briefly spooked the markets last week when its chief financial officer revealed that younger teenagers were spending less time on his network. But when I ask Mr Spiegel the "Facebook killer" question, he tells me "we really admire what Mark (Zuckerberg) is doing", and says there is plenty of room for both forms of communication. And indeed a recent study by Enders Analysis shows that the impact of messaging apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp on Facebook may be somewhat exaggerated. Its research did show more than eight million people using mobile messaging apps in the UK, with nearly half of all those between 16-24 using them daily. But it also revealed that Facebook was still dominant in this age group, with 70% using it on their phones every day. But the question I want answered is how Snapchat plans to make money. I'd expected two responses from Evan Spiegel - that his firm is still intent on building its audience rather than worrying about revenues, and that when it does think about a business model it will be based on advertising. I am wrong in both cases - building revenues is now a priority, and the aim is to earn money from users rather than advertisers. While refusing to go into details - "we don't want to spoil the surprise" - he outlines a plan to get users to pay for added value services. This seems an unlikely proposition - Facebook and Twitter have relied almost exclusively on various forms of advertising as revenue sources, and it's unclear that users who have grown accustomed to a free service can be persuaded to pay for extras. But Evan Spiegel is looking to China rather than other Silicon Valley outfits for inspiration - he points to the success of WeChat, owned by Tencent: "They grew their business in the absence of a brand advertising market so they had to do it through in-app transactions and gaming services and they're now generating 90% of their $2.5bn (£1.6bn) a quarter through in-app transactions." He goes on to outline a theory that social media businesses like Facebook and Twitter are seen as utilities, and therefore people will not pay for them, while apps like Snapchat are entertainment products and "people pay a lot for entertainment". The question must be whether you can successfully monetise an app that is almost exclusively used by young people who probably have little spare cash. Remember how much excitement there was about the way the BBM messaging service was enabling Blackberry to reach a whole new demographic? BBM has millions of users and is now out on the Android and iOS platforms, but it has failed to arrest the decline of Blackberry. Still, Snapchat has obviously tapped into a mood amongst a new digital generation that is more concerned with communicating everything to just a few close friends than telling the world their business on Facebook or Twitter. That kind of idea with that size of audience always attracts interest from predators - YouTube and Instagram were each swallowed by Google and Facebook respectively when they were just a year old. When I suggested that Facebook might try to buy the business there was nervous laughter from Spiegel and his PR advisors - and he insisted that he was staying independent. A few hours after our meeting, reports emerged that Snapchat had turned down a bid from Facebook valuing the business at $3bn. But don't be surprised if someone else comes dangling a multi-billion dollar offer for the business quite soon. And maybe in the ephemeral world of hot new mobile messaging apps, Evan Spiegel would be best advised to grab it before it disappears. Source: www.m.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24925932

Angry leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities allegedly chased away the Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada (retd.) from the emergency ward of the Lokoja General Hospital on Tuesday. Wada had gone to the hospital to visit their injured colleague, Dr. Ngozi Ilo, and commiserate with them over the death of their former President, Prof. Festus Iyayi, in an accident involving his convoy and an ASUU vehicle on Tuesday. The Chairman, University of Benin chapter of ASUU, Dr. Anthony Monye-Emina; and the Benin Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Sunny Iyalo, had minor injuries and were therefore not admitted into the hospital. The ASUU leaders, including the National President, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi; the Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Nassir Adesola; the Chairman, Lagos State University chapter of the union, Dr. Adekunle Idris; Monye-Emina; Iyalo and lecturers from the Federal University Lokoja however sent the governor away from the hospital’s emergency ward. Their grouse was Wada’s late response to the accident and the uncaring attitude he allegedly displayed towards the union leaders involved in the accident. They also accused him of trying to make a political gain out of their misfortune. Idris, who confirmed that Wada was chased out of the emergency ward, said, “We are surprised that a state governor could resort to telling lies because contrary to the claim by his spokesperson that he showed care towards our colleagues, he did not. “Somebody that did not stop after his convoy killed our leader; somebody that did not come to the hospital until some minutes to 5pm(on Tuesday) after the accident that happened around 11am could not be said to be caring. “That was why we chased him out of the emergency ward of the hospital and we also prevented him from seeing Prof. Iyayi’s corpse in the mortuary. “We are not happy with the fact that he came very late to the hospital and the fact that when he came, his press crew attempted to take photograph and video record of Dr. Ilo, who is our national welfare secretary. We stopped them because that was the height of insensitivity. “Somebody that could not provide us with an ambulance cannot be said to be caring. We had to call UNIBEN for an ambulance that took Ilo to the UNIBEN Teaching Hospital while our colleagues from the Federal University, Lokoja, with the assistance of the vice-chancellor, gave us the ambulance that was used to convey the remains of Prof. Iyayi to Benin.” Idris added that though Wada left the hospital “like a gentleman,” some of his overzealous security aides tried to be naughty. He said, “Some of the policemen that followed him to the hospital wanted to be naughty but we lectured them. The hospital workers and the residents of Lokoja who witnessed how we chased the governor away were happy.” Also, Adesola expressed dismay at the efforts made by the governor to rewrite the incident. He said, “It was actually the last of the governor’s convoy that veered off the road and ran into a vehicle that was conveying Iyayi and others. “When the governor’s convoy came with noise and harassment, everyone on the road moved to the side of the road for them to pass but unfortunately, the governor’s aide has told the world that an ASUU vehicle was avoiding a trailer and ran into their escort vehicle. “What manner of reckless lying is that? The front of the ASUU bus remains intact except for the windscreen that broke. Iyayi was sitting at the back of the bus and the escort van ran into it. The most annoying part is that the incident occurred around 11am and the governor did not even visit the hospital until around 5pm. “He came with a large number of pressmen and security aides and was attempting to make some political capital out of our misfortune. “We actually had to chase him away from the emergency ward where our welfare secretary was still receiving treatment." ... A former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, on Wednesday told the leadership of the All Progressives Congress that he could not be wooed to join the party as he had never been a politician. He made this disclosure when the leadership of the APC visited him in Minna, Niger State. Abubakar while speaking to newsmen after his meeting with the APC leadership said, “I am not a politician, I am not a partisan politician and I don’t need to be wooed. “The APC leaders came to brief me on the amalgamation of the new party, how they are doing, how far they have gone and how things are moving. I have given them my dose of advice.” He added that Nigerians should be allowed to exercise their right by joining any party of their choice, urging them to do what is right for their party. Abdulsalami said, “Whether you are in opposition or in government, you are serving the country. So whatever role any party finds itself, they should play that role very well.” Also, a former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida said his door was always open to anyone that comes to consult with him on how to move the nation forward. “I said Nigeria first before PDP. Nigeria is bigger than PDP. They came to talk about Nigeria and how to move the nation forward. “The APC leaders visited me to discuss the welfare of the country which should be the responsibility of every Nigerian whether you belong to a party or you do not have a party, you have an assignment to protect the integrity of the country. “People who come to talk about Nigeria and the way forward will always be welcomed by me. We have to find a way forward for this generation, what we are doing is for this generation,” he said. The Natoinal Leader of APC, Chief Bisi Akande said they were in the state to consult with the former leaders. “We need to pick the brains of former rulers in this country in order to be wiser than we were before we came here.
