Former Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi Is Dead Nigerian football icon Stephen Okechukwu Keshi died suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday in Benin City, Edo state, TheCable understands. The former international football player and coach had lost his wife of 33 years, Kate, last year after a prolonged battle with cancer. TheCable confirmed his death from a member of his family as well as one of his close associates. “He was not ill at all, never showed any signs of illness, but we suspect he never got over the death of his wife,” a friend said. He is survived by four children and his mother. |
Former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, has accused “some individuals” at the party’s national secretariat of conducting a “secret handing over” of his position as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party to Ahmed Makarfi who is to function as the caretaker chairman. The party’s former deputy national chairman, Uche Secondus, had earlier handed over the reins of office to Mr. Makarfi at a brief ceremony held at the Wadata Plaza in Abuja. The opposition party has been dogged by crisis overthe chairmanship position.Powerful party organs have rallied behind Mr. Makarfi who, himself, was appointed under controversial circumstances. Mr. Sheriff who had been in charge of the party for months, insists he remains the chairman. The two men had secured favourable court injunctions restricting either of them from parading themselves as national chairman and or caretaker chairman of the party respectively.Mr. Makarfi said the former Borno governor wouldhave attended the party’s meeting on Monday night if he had not travelled out of the country. But in a press statement issued Tuesday evening, Mr. Sheriff, said through his spokesperson, Inuwa Bwala, that he was still in charge.Read his full statement:The statement reads in full: “Our attention has beendrawn to the activities at the National secretariat ofthe PDP to the effect that some individuals masquerading as leaders have handed over to AhmedMohammed Makarki under a contraption called “caretaker committee”.“We state as a matter of fact that going by proceedings still pending in the courts to the effect that Senator Ali Sheriff remains the National Chairman, whatever transpired was null, void and of no effect whatsoever.“Sheriff has not mandated anybody, nor was his authority obtained by Uche Secondus, who has been parading himself as acting on behalf of the NationalChairman.“While we await the verdicts of the courts, we wishto state that Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is and remains the National Chairman of the party, until otherwise declared by the courts.“We allowed the charade to go on at the secretariatwithout any form of challenge in strict obedience tocareful pronouncement on the matter, but we must also state that there is no gathering of groups or individuals, however powerful, such groups or individuals may be, that can be said to take precedence over the law.“For the avoidance of doubts, we state categoricallythat what took place at the PDP secretariat on Tuesday June 7, 2016 was a total disregard to court orders. And an extension of the impunity for which the party has been accused of and which has taken the party to where it is today.“The public should disregard all the actions and pronouncements,” Mr. Bwala said. |

The Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar, on Tuesday threatened to jail senators attending court sessions in solidarity with Senate President Bukola Saraki and throw them outof the tribunal. The chairman got angry over ‘rude’ comments fromsenators and other supporters of Mr. Saraki. The individuals, seated in the court gallery, had repeatedly asked Rotimi Jacobs, prosecution counsel, to “sit down.”This immediately infuriated Mr. Umar, who said the Senate President’s supporters’ conduct was becoming unbearable in his court, adding that they should “keep quiet.”“If I hear anybody ask the counsel to sit down, I will deal with the person and nobody can question me about it. In fact, I will hold the person in contempt and sentence the person to hard labour and nobody will question me.”The trial of Mr. Saraki for alleged anticipatory andfalse asset declaration resumed Tuesday (today), after weeks of rescheduling at the instance of prosecution team. The session is currently underway. The tribunal is hoping to conclude the cross-examination of prosecution witness, Michael Wetkas, this week, counsel in the case said. The cross-examination began in April, and has prolonged till now, a situation that has angered the prosecution team which has accused the defence of unnecessarily slowing down the trialBoth teams are currently sparring over the significance of questions being asked by the defence.Paul Usoro, counsel to Mr. Saraki, had been grillingMr. Wetkas, an EFCC official, for weeks, over evidences he tendered against the top lawmaker before the court. |

MOVEMENT for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Biafra Independence Movement (BIM) havecalled on the United Nations and other world leaders to divide Nigeria into six geo-political zones to solve problems facing the nation. The group said granting the six geo-political zones in Nigeria self rule would be the only solution to the many problems in the country. In a release signed by the Director of Information of the pro-Biafra group, Mr. Chris Mocha, the two groups appealed to the UN and other super powers to consider the lives of people that are killed on a daily basis in Nigeria arising from the insurgency in the North East and Fulani herdsmen said to be allegedly affiliated to ISIS and Boko Haram. Mocha said the proposed nations inlcude South East, (Biafra), South South (Niger Delta), North East, North West, South West, (Oduduwa) and North- Central. He stressed that no amount of preaching on nationalism can change Nigeria as it is today. Mocha said when the proposed zones are granted independence, assets of the citizens of the different countries will be protected by international laws, just as bilateral agreements will guide the future relationship of the new republics. The group, however, insisted that several members of BIM/MASSOB were killed last week during the Biafra anniversary at Nkpor and Onitsha. “While all the members of BIM/ MASSOB in Anambra central senatorial district including Nkpor town in Idemili North Local Government Area celebrated at Ifite Dunu, our counterparts in Anambra North including Onitsha converged at the zonal secretariat, project site at Nteje in Oyi council area of Anambra State. |
