Hundreds of bodies – too many to count – remain strewn in the bush in Nigeria from an Islamic extremist attack that Amnesty International described as the “deadliest massacre” in the history of Boko Haram.
Fighting continued on Friday around Baga, a town on the border with Chad where insurgents seized a key military base on 3 January and attacked again on Wednesday.

“Security forces have responded rapidly, and have deployed significant military assets and conducted air strikes against militant targets,” said a government spokesman.

District head Baba Abba Hassan said most victims are children, women and elderly people who could not run fast enough when insurgents drove into Baga, firing rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles on town residents.

“The human carnage perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists in Baga was enormous,” Muhammad Abba Gava, a spokesman for poorly armed civilians in a defence group that fights Boko Haram, told the Associated Press.
He said the civilian fighters gave up on trying to count all the bodies. “No one could attend to the corpses and even the seriously injured ones who may have died by now,” Gava said.

An Amnesty International statement said there are reports the town was razed and as many as 2,000 people killed.
If true, “this marks a disturbing and bloody escalation of Boko Haram’s ongoing onslaught,” said Daniel Eyre, Nigeria researcher for Amnesty International.

A pair of dramatic raids Friday in France led to the killing of three terrorists -- one suspected in the fatal shooting of a policewoman and four hostages, the other two in the massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdomagazine -- and to the freeing of more than a dozen people being held hostage.

A massive hunt was launched Friday for the only surviving suspect from the two standoff scenes in France, who may have escaped, police union spokesman Pascal Disant said. Hayat Boumeddiene, a 26-year-old woman, allegedly was the accomplice of Amedy Coulibaly, 32, in a hostage-taking incident at a kosher grocery store in eastern Paris.

• Cherif Kouachi, a suspect in the Charlie Hebdo slaughter, visited Yemen in 2011 and French authorities were aware of his contacts with terrorist organizations in Yemen and Syria, Molins said at a press conference.

• Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for orchestrating the deadly terrorist attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, the founder of the magazine The Intercept, Jeremy Scahill, told CNN. CNN has not independently confirmed this claim.

• Four hostages were killed and 15 survived in the standoff between an armed terrorist and police at a Paris kosher grocery store on Friday, according to Israeli government sources who characterized a phone conversation between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and French President François Hollande.

• A man claiming to be Amedy Coulibaly, the suspected hostage-taker at the Paris grocery store, told CNN affiliate BFMTV that he belonged to the Islamist militant group ISIS. CNN cannot independently confirm the authenticity of the recording.

You all remember the hairstyle of the 60s and 70s, the flamboyant afro rocked by the most fashionable men and women. Ooops, forgot you are from the 90s (or maybe 20th Century). Well, check any old picture from the 70s, you will be surprised Popsy was once a “guy”.

Afro, sometimes shortened to ‘fro and also known as a “natural”, is a hairstyle worn naturally by people with lengthy kinky hair texture or specifically styled in such a fashion by individuals with naturally curly or straight hair. The hairstyle is created by combing the hair away from the scalp, allowing the hair to extend out from the head in a large, rounded shape.

Well, like all things, afro went out of vogue in the late 80s. But that’s not the end. Afro is back!

The timing makes sense. Natural hair is a perfect fit for a generation that shuns Styrofoam and loves composting, hybrid cars and eco-friendly yoga clothes. “It goes with the holistic lifestyle people are trying to live,” explains Glen Ettienne, owner of the De Lux Gallery hair salon in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. “People are trying to eat better, cut back on chemicals. It’s not a phase — it’s becoming the culture.”

The real afro is just natural hair, but keeping it is not as simple as that. It’s takes a lot of time and effort grooming it. But the look it gives you is worth the sweat.

Getting a good night’s sleep is key to performing at your best during the day. A lot happens in your body while you sleep. When you get your ZZZs, you cycle between REM and non-REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement. During REM sleep, your eyes move quickly in different directions. That doesn’t happen during non-REM sleep. First comes non-REM sleep, followed by a shorter period of REM sleep, and then the cycle starts over again. Dreams typically happen during REM sleep.

So, how much sleep do I need?
The amount of sleep a person needs depends on many factors, including age. For example, in general:
Infants require about 14-15 hours a day.
Teenagers need about 8.5-9.5 hours on average.
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours a night for the best amount of sleep, although some people may need as few as 6 hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep each day.
Women in the first 3 months of pregnancy often need several more hours of sleep than usual.

However, experts say that if you feel drowsy during the day, even during boring activities, you haven’t had enough sleep.

Ok, what happend when I don’t get enough sleep?
Simple, you pay what you owe! If you miss 2 hours of sleep,be sure you owe your body 2 hours. The amount of sleep a person needs increases if he or she has been deprived of sleep in previous days. Getting too little sleep creates a “sleep debt,” which is much like being overdrawn at a bank.

Eventually, your body will demand that the debt be repaid. We don’t seem to adapt to getting less sleep than we need, while we may get used to a sleep-depriving schedule, our judgment, reaction time, and other functions are still impaired.

Burkina Faso’s military chief is now the head of state of the West African nation, after unrest that led to the resignation of President Blaise Compaore. Gen. Honore Nabere Traore said Friday that he has taken over presidential duties and that he will lead the country through a political transition and elections.

Faced with violent protests demanding an end to his 27-year rule, Compaore initially dissolved the government but said he would stay in power until elections could be carried out. He changed his mind, and on Friday announced his resignation. Compaore said he stepped down to preserve peace in the country.

Traore appealed for calm and called for a return to a normal constitutional process. Security forces, including the military, will continue to maintain order and safety in the country, Traore said. Upon his resignation, Compaore appealed via Twitter for “free elections to be held in Burkina Faso within 90 days at the most.”

France, the former colonial ruler of what is today Burkina Faso, welcomed the President’s resignation and called for elections to happen quickly. Unrest has gripped Burkina Faso — a key partner for Western countries in the campaign against Islamist militants — since protests against Compaore’s government turned violent Thursday. Demonstrators stormed Parliament, setting fire to the building.

Compaore had been in office since he took power after a bloody coup in 1987. The opposition had called for Compaore’s immediate resignation. In Bobo-Dioulasso, the country’s second-largest city, protesters reportedly tore down a statue of Compaore. The incident followed reports of protesters storming the parliament building, where lawmakers were set to vote on a motion to allow Compaore to extend his time in power.
The country was formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta when it was established in 1958 as a self-governing colony under France.

Boko Haram has denied claims by Nigeria's government that it has agreed to a ceasefire and will release more than 200 abducted schoolgirls. The group's leader, Abubakar Shekau, said the girls had converted to Islam and been married off since being taken.

Nigeria's army announced a ceasefire with the militants on 17 October, saying the girls would soon be freed. But violence has continued since news of the alleged truce, including a fatal bomb blast on Friday. Boko Haram has been fighting an insurgency since 2009, with some 2,000 civilians reportedly killed this year.

In a video released on Friday, Abubakar Shekau said: "We have not made ceasefire with anyone. We did not negotiate with anyone. It's a lie.
"We will not negotiate. What is our business with negotiation? Allah said we should not." Shekau also claimed that the militants were holding a German national, thought to be a teacher, who was kidnapped by gunmen in July. There was no indication of when or where the group's latest video was shot.
The video will come as a huge embarrassment for the Nigerian government after it said it had secured a ceasefire with Boko Haram.

The Islamist militants sparked global outrage in April by abducting 219 schoolgirls from the remote north-eastern town of Chibok, in Borno state. Their continued captivity has led to criticism of the Nigerian government's efforts to secure their release. Hopes were raised earlier this month when Nigeria's chief of defence staff, Alex Badeh, announced a truce with the group. "They've assured us they have the girls and they will release them," he said. "I am cautiously optimistic." But the Boko Haram leader said the girls were "in their marital homes" after being married off by the group.
