As you read this, highlife singer, J.Martins, is already in Nice, France, where he has been contracted to perform at the wedding of Chelsea FC star striker, Didier Drogba, and his wife, Lalla Diakite. The wedding holds Sunday but the Good or Bad crooner left Nigeria Thursday morning. J.Martins is the only Nigerian artiste invited to perform at the wedding that will feature a constellation of football stars drawn from Drogba’s club side and national team, Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire. Meanwhile, E-Gist gathered that J.Martins was not invited on his own strength, but on the strength of his collaboration with Congolese music star, Fally Ipupa, on the song, Jupa Remix. In fact, it was Ipupa that was invited, the source says. “Drogba really loves the song and he thought it was Fally Ipupa’s. So, when his management got across to Fally to perform at the wedding to sing specified songs, he told them that Jupa Remix was not his. And that for him to perform it at the wedding, his collaborator, the owner of the song, had to be there.” When Drogba was briefed, he assented because he had seen J.Martins perform at an event in Lagos, the source further says. Drogba is getting married to his long-time partner, Lalla, by whom he has three kids. Unlike other multimillionaire football stars, the Ivorian goal poacher, who was rated one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2010, is opting for a private wedding bereft of outlandish pomp and ceremony. |
Many peeps in the industry will keep wondering why the songstress Omawunmi didn't want to unveiled face of the man who impregnate her after several weeks of questioning and hush-hush talks as regards who is the baby father of pregnant songstress, Omawumi Megbele, but we can boldly unveiled the man who is responsible for the powerful singer's pregnancy. Information's carried out by our correspondent revealed that Oluwatosin Ibrahim Yussuf is the one responsible for the star singer pregnant. Though the handsome dude is alleged to be engaged to another lady and Ibrahim has said to have taken full responsibility of the pregnancy and has even given his word to take proper care of the child to any level. However, Ibrahim, who is said to be the choice of several ladies on the Island, is said to be calm and not ready for marriage with the songstress at the moment. In fact, Omawumi and her bosom friend, Waje, are said to have been regular faces at the night club. |
In apparent recognition of his propagation of peace in the restive Niger-Delta region, consistent hitmaker, Enetimi Odom, the musician popularly known as Timaya, has been appointed a Peace Ambassador by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, IIFWP, a division of the United Nations. According to Dr. Hak Ja Haan Moon, co-founder of the IIFWP, Timaya was especially chosen for this honour because he is “one of those individuals whose lives exemplify the ideal of living for the sake of others, and who dedicate themselves to practices which promote the founding ideals of the IIFWP.” Among other things, the Peace Ambassadorship comes with a special number plate for the singer. Reacting to the honour, Timaya says, “I am happy. Honestly, I am. This goes to show that the ideals I am using the instrumentality of my music to preach are not in vain. I have said it in my music and at different fora that Nigeria can only progress unless the Federal Government pays more than lip-service to the agitations of the people of the Niger-Delta. It is even a good thing that the President is from that region which means that things will surely get better. I thank those who deemed it expedient to make me a Peace Ambassador and I promise not to relent in this struggle.” Moon says further that the new Ambassador for Peace, like others from all over the world, is expected to contribute to the fulfilment of the hope of all ages, a unified world of peace wherein the spiritual and material dimensions of life are harmonized. Thus, Timaya joins a short list of highly rated celebrities including D’fbanj, Ini Edo and Ramsey Noah who are also UN Ambassadors. Interestingly, this recent honour is coming a few weeks after the ‘Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa’ as he is also known was specially recognised and appreciated for his outstanding contributions to the social and cultural development of Sierra-Leone at the country’s 50th Independence anniversary. Meanwhile, Timaya and his Dem Mama Soldiers are currently on a 10-country tour of Europe spanning Holland, Greece, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and France among others. During the trip, he will perform at the FIFA Women’s World Cup holding in Germany between June 26 and July 17 where the Super Falcons of Nigeria are participating. |
Report at our disposal revealed that Otunba Mike Adenuga and two of his children, Paddy, and Oyin, are at loggerhead. Sources attribute this development to attempts by the children to move out of the world of the father without the latter's consent. Further findings revealed that both Paddy and Oyin separately sought their father's blessing and support to set up businesses of their own. According to sources, the venture they had in mind would divorce them from the operations of their father's business activities. The celebrated face of multibillionaire enterprises such as Globacom, Con Oil and Equitoria Trust Bank was said to have refused their entreaties. One of the torch lights of the Nations commerce is said to prefer his children eke their living within his web of businesses. However sources claimed that both Oyin and Paddy refused to heed to their father's wish. They were said to have initiated moves contrary to their father's desire- and in order to drive his point home, the Billionaire was said to have stopped allowances due to them. And forbade provision of funds to them by the managers of his businesses. Paddy while trying to act independently was said to have secured a loan facility that went sour from a 'friend'. His forgiving father was said to have waded into the matter when anti graft agents were invited into the case. But despite this, the favorite son of the man many want to be like still refuses to do away with the idea of moving out of his father's world. And this adamant still upholds the tension between them. Oyin is said to be faring slightly better. She is said to have kick started a cosmetic trade outside of the country. Those in the know however insists the lady that made headlines with a ruse intending wedding to party sojourner, Wole Aboderin still needs funds 'to make things happen' What those in the know of this development find mystifying is why the children of the man widely celebrated as an exemplary Nigerian and generous giver are so bent on moving outside his sphere of influence. http://www.modernghana.com/movie/11957/3/billiionaire-mike-adenuga-at-loggerhead-with-sonpa.html |

THERE are strong indications that the ban placed on West Bromwich Albion’s attacker, Osaze Odemwingie, by coach Samson Siasia of the Super Eagles would be extended to the team’s next Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Madagascar and the friendly re-match against Argentina in Antanarivo and Dhakar, Bangladesh, respectively.http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/sportsonthehour/2011/june/10/sportsbreak-10-06-2011-001.html |

A LAGOS High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday sentenced a middle-aged man, Joel Omotosho, to 16-and-a-half years imprisonment for stealing N20 million belonging to his employers. Justice Adebisi Kayode-Ogunmekan in her judgment dismissed an application filed by the prosecution for the forfeiture of a property he admitted building with the stolen money. The prosecution, led by Mr. M.T. Adewoye, had asked the court to order the forfeiture of the property to his employers, Man Mountain and Company Limited, as compensation. According to the judge, it was wrong for the prosecution to file such an application after trial had been concluded. She said the prosecution was right to contend that the court could make an order of forfeiture of a stolen property in favour of the complainant when such stolen property was traceable. Justice Kayode-Ogunmekan said the court could not make such an order under the circumstances of the case as the prosecution failed to follow the conditions specified by law to warrant the court to make such an order. She averred that the forfeiture application filed after trial had ended and the convict had been granted allocutus by the court, could not stand as the prosecution solely relied on the convict’s confessional statement. Also, she held that it would be double jeopardy for the convict to forfeit the property after pleading guilty to the charges of stealing and had taken a plea bargain. Omotoso was found guilty of the 11-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, which he had admitted to before the court on March 24. He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment on each of the counts, which would however, run concurrently from the day he was first arraigned. His lawyer, Mr. Adeshina Ogunlana, had earlier filed an application objecting to the forfeiture, describing it as belated, malicious and oppressive and had asked the court to discountenance it. Ogunlana had argued that the prosecution couldn’t properly oppose the convict’s plea of allocutus, which was a part of his fundamental human rights. He said the forfeiture would amount to double jeopardy for Omotosho, who had spent almost 10 years in Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos, without being sentenced. According to him, the application violates Sections 516, 390 (9) and 263 of the Criminal Code Cap C17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003. |

CRISIS brewed in the Senate, last night, following the resolution of former Governors to enthrone a political rival of the Senate President, Senator George Akume as the minority leader. Akume was adopted by leaders of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, despite an earlier straw poll by Senators-elect in the minority that Senator Ganiyu Solomon, ACN, Lagos West should be adopted as Senate Minority Leader. Senator Solomon has now been slated for the position of Senate Minority Whip while the CPC is to produce the deputy minority leader and the ANPP is to produce the deputy minority whip. Senator Solomon’s adoption as minority leader was reversed after a meeting, weekend, in Lagos House, Abuja where party grandees, mostly former governors were said to have influenced the choice of Senator Akume as the minority leader. Akume is yet to be presented for adoption to the Senate and it was learnt, yesterday, that the minority caucus is to present him when the Senate resumes. However, the prospects of his being adopted raised concern among senators, especially in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who are promising to foist a leader on the minority parties in the same manner the minority parties collaborated to sabotage the PDP’s choice of Rep. Mulikat Akande-Adeola as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Besides, opponents of the Akume candidacy were pointing at the fact that he is from Benue State like the Senate President. Those in support of Akume among the class of former governors belonging to the party were pointing at the need of broadening the party base ahead of the 2015 election with the enthronement of a non Yoruba as the party’s highest ranking personality at the national level. Akume’s choice is, however, facing serious challenges from allies of Senator Mark. Mark and Akume who was formerly in the PDP fought a bruising campaign for the Senate presidency in 2007 which Mark won after a last minute rally of support. The ACN presently has 18 senators, the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC and the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP each has seven senators, Labour has four senators and the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP has one senator. The PDP, however, has the majority with 71 senators. A senator told Vanguard, yesterday: “What the ACN did to the PDP by helping them to fuel a rebellion in the House of Representatives is likely to play out in the Senate as the PDP seeks its own pound of flesh by foisting a leadership on the minority parties.” A ranking senator in the immediate past Senate and a known associate of Senator Mark refused to be drawn into the controversy saying that the Senate would deal with the issue when it comes. He said: “They have not come but when we get to the bridge we will cross it.” Another associate of Senator Mark was more forthright by affirming that the proposal would be decided on a vote an unusual procedure in the adoption of minority leaders. By Senate tradition the Senate is expected to receive the proposal of the minority caucus without debate. Mark’s associate who said there would be no way that Akume could sit on the leadership, stressed:. “This matter will be decided on the floor and a vote will decide it.” |
Defeated House of Representatives speakership contender, Honourable Mulikat Adeola-Akande, has said that she was a victim of sheer betrayal, which robbed her of victory. Honourable Adeola-Akande, however, said she had accepted defeat in good faith and in the spirit of sportsmanship. She spoke in Abuja while addressing Nigerian women who gave her support during the race at the headquarters of National Council for Women Societies (NCWS). Describing the emergence of Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, representing Kebbe and Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State as the Speaker as an act of God, she said she decided to join the race, knowing fully that she was eminently qualified and capable of running the office. She said what happened clearly showed that some people worked underground against her in spite of her open endorsement. The House of Representatives member from Oyo in the South-West said, “before I decided to take a shot at the speakership race, I examined all the dynamics at that time and I saw that everything favoured me. “Most especially, when we all know about the zoning formula in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”. Adeola-Akande said the position was zoned to the South-West and that she was one of the lucky ones that came back for a second term from the South-West, saying her candidacy was endorsed by the PDP and even most of the House members prior to the day of election. “But we cannot blame God for anything. He has His reason for everything. It was so easy for me to congratulate my colleague because I see it as a contest. And if you have faith in God, you will know that God will never do anything that will make you unhappy.” She maintained that she was not going to be daunted by the incident but to continue to push for the actualization 35 per cent affirmative action as promised by President Goodluck Jonathan. She noted that the success of any administration was a collective responsibility and urged the Nigerian women to support the new government of President Jonathan to succeed. The President of the National Council of the Women Societies, Hajiya Ramatu Usman, said Hon. Adeola-Akande, found it expedient to thank the women for their overwhelming support during the race. |
THE newly-inaugurated Senate has uncovered a destabilisation plot which, sources said, is being coordinated by the leadership of one of the opposition parties. A returning senator, who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune on the matter, said that the senators were told of the plot which emanated at a meeting of the opposition party with one of their leaders. The senator said that the plot involved a serious and consistent antagonism against the leadership of the new Senate. The source said that a leader of one of the parties, who is seeking to rally the opposition parties along the line of his agenda, however, met a brick wall in the senators of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), who refused to join in the destabilisation plot. Sources said that the plot was to ensure that members of the opposition parties opposed every pro-PDP move in the Senate and possibly grind its activities to a halt. “The plan is to ensure that the Senate does not move as smoothly as it did between 2007 and 2011. The fact is that one of the opposition parties told its members that if the president of the Senate, Senator David Mark, is allowed to have a smooth sail, he could start eyeing top national positions in 2015 and bringing him down to earth would force the man to negotiate with them,” a source said. While members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) were said to have attended the meeting, senators from the ANPP reportedly refused to attend. One of the lawmakers told the emissaries that he was not ready to attend a meeting where he would be dictated to from Lagos. He said he was out to represent his party in the Senate and would only do things that would enhance the standard of life of his constituents. “We can’t just start opposing in the Senate just for the sake of opposition. We can support issues that are in tandem with the thinking of our people and reject those that are against the wishes of our people. But, as for me, I don’t represent Lagos; I represent my people,” the senator said. A source said that the plot by the leader of ACN, Senator Bola Tinubu, to back Senator George Akume as Senate Minority Leader, was one of the methods he intended using to orchestrate division in the Senate. “Tinubu wants Akume to become minority leader, when he knows that Akume and the Senate president are practically political enemies. The scenario he wants painted is such that Akume will continue to block bills and moves to enhance the workings of the Senate. It is a sure way of preparing the Senate for a disastrous session,” the source said. |
