Celebrities › How We Sealed Kanye West’s Deal – D’banj by HighChief4(op): 5:31pm On Jun 25, 2011
Members of the Mo’hit crew Thursday(Last Week) in Lagos described the open contract it signed with the American super Kanye West’s record company Good News as the biggest thing to happen to the Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

The contract sealed between Don Jazzy, President of Mo’hit records, D’Banj, Kanye West and management of Good records was witnessed by rap artiste Jay Z and other top rated American musicians.

Narrating the genesis of the deal, D’Banj disclosed that “After our collaborations with Snoop Doggy Dogg, we traveled to Dubai on business and that’s where we ran into Kanye. We were quite surprised when he told us he was familiar with our music and was willing to work with us.

We decided that since Snoop was only interested in collaborating with us, we should give Kanye a chance. And that’s how the whole process started”.

Now that the deal is sealed, the D’Banj continued “we will be traveling to America to begin recording of our first album and that will take us away from the country for about three months.

Our going to America does not also translate to relocation, instead we would be spending some time there and the rest of the year in Nigeria”.

Don Jazzy who also spoke at the media brief held at the Koko Lounge in Yaba, Lagos allayed fears in some quarters that his record company would abandoned artistes on Mo’hits records saying, “ the contract we signed is between D’Banj and Mo’hits records and what this means is that, this is an opportunity for artistes signed our label to get world attention too.

Right now all our artistes have equal opportunity of getting on board the Mo’hit/Good records collaboration”.

He also spoke about his company’s desire to sign on its first female musician pointing out that this year’s Koko Mansion will dwell on searching for Mo’hits’ first lady.
Business › Ministerial Appointment: Electricity Employees Threaten Nationwide Darkness by HighChief4(op): 5:22pm On Jun 25, 2011
Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees, on Thursday, threatened to throw the country into darkness should President Goodluck Jonathan fail to appoint a focused engineer as Minister of Power.

The union’s Assistant General Secretary (West), Mr Johnson Fati, while addressing newsmen in Ibadan, urged President Jonathan to appoint a technocrat, well experienced and seasoned engineer who could deliver as minister.

While noting that the Federal Government was planning to put a non-professional as Minister of Power, the union expressed doubt over the performance of the Presidential Taskforce on Power, because of the lack of indepth technical knowledge of the sector.

According to the union, the present power situation in the country was a clear manifestation of the committee’s ineptitude.

While noting that two licences were issued to the companies owned by the committee’s chairman, Professor Barth Nnaji, to generate power since seven years ago, the union disclosed that the companies had not generated one watt of electricity.
Politics › Al-mustapha, Others Know Fate July 14 Over Kudirat Abiola’s Murder . by HighChief4(op): 5:21pm On Jun 25, 2011
JUSTICE Mojisola Dada of a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere yesterday fixed July 14, 2011 to deliver ruling in the no case submission instituted by former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamzat Al-Mustapha and two others facing criminal trial over their alleged involvement in the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.

Justice Dada fixed the date shortly after counsel in the matter argued and adopted their written addresses before the court.

While adopting his written address, Olalekan Ojo, counsel to Al-Mustapha, Alhaji Lateef Shofolahan who was an aide to the late Alhaja Abiola and Rabo Lawal who was head of the anti-riot squad in Aso Rock, had urged the court to dispense justice in accordance with the law and not on rumours and sentiments.

Ojo submitted that the court has a constitutional duty to discharge and acquit the defendants since the prosecution was not able to establish a prima facie case against them, adding that the case of the prosecution must be cogent for it to compel the defendants to prove their innocence.

“The court cannot rely on the statement contained in the proof of evidence. There was no legally admissible evidence before the court during trial of the defendants,” Ojo said.

He submitted that there was need for sufficient evidence to be presented before the court, just as he added that the evidences of the prosecution have been discredited following cross-examination by prosecution witnesses.

“There is no sufficient evidence against the defendants for them to be convicted. Discredited evidence is no evidence. A no case submission involves absence of evidence,” he added.

Ojo insisted that the prosecution witnesses two and three were induced to say what they told the court because they are on the pay roll of the state.

While praying the court to discharge and acquit the defendants, he urged the court to uphold the no case submission of the defendants.

But the prosecuting counsel, Lawal Pedro (SAN), in his reaction submitted that the court should determine whether the prosecution has not established a case against all the defendants.

“Circumstantial evidence is enough for the court to convict the defendants. I pray the court to call on the defendants to open their defence,” Pedro said.

It will be recalled that Justice Dada had at the last adjourned date declared as null and void, application of the prosecution seeking the court to reopen its case in the trial.

The judge in her ruling on the application also held that the application lacked merit and that attempts by the prosecution to make the court reason with it is an attempt to defeat the order of court.

She also ruled that the said application amounts to prosecutorial rascality, adding: “It was an insult and an affront for the court to have ordered a case closed after five months and four adjournments for one witness who happens to be a very high officer in the police and a lawyer; and such officer refused to come to court after being repeatedly asked to come to give his witness.

“And for the prosecution to have told the court that the court rushed to close its case is an affront to justice, especially when an order of the court is not being respected by Lawal Pedro (SAN), lead counsel to the prosecution, who happens to come from the Ministry of Justice.

“The court is not an extension of the Ministry of Justice. The court restates the earlier order and asks the prosecution to submit their response to the no case submission of the defendants,” she declared.

Politics › Pregnant Woman, 11 Others Injured At Ekiti Varsity’s Stampede by HighChief4(op): 10:15pm On Jun 23, 2011
THERE was a stampede yesterday at the University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD) as 12 students, including a pregnant woman, were wounded during a test conducted for about 3,000 students of the Faculty of Education.

The early morning pandemonium saw three students on danger list as the management of the University of Ado-Ekiti Teaching Hospital (UTH) battled to revive them through artificial respiratory machine, while others were placed on drip from the shock they suffered during the incident.

Meanwhile, a bill for a law to consolidate government-owned universities in Ekiti has been passed by the state House of Assembly.

The schools are the University of Science and Technology, Ifaki-Ekiti, the University of Ado-Ekiti and the University of Education and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti. With this law, the three universities, according to the Speaker, Adewale Omirin, should be merged in order to have a stable and viable university system.

The UTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Patrick Adegun, said the pregnant student might be induced to deliver the baby or be operated upon to save her life and that of the baby.

Adegun, who received the institution’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dada Adelowo and other principal officers of the school, who were at the hospital to see how the students were faring, said there was no casualty.

The students were said to have rolled over one another and sustained injuries while rushing to submit their answer sheets on a test on Education Research Method held at the 2000-capacity Education Trust Fund (ETF) hall.

The course lecturer, Dr. Michael Omirin, said the victims were trying to submit the test scripts to their course representatives in front of the one-storey building.

A source said the incident was due to the harsh attitude of the students. He said: “Every year, a large number of students fail the course. So we have over 4,000 students in the hall that has the capacity to contain just 2,000.

“So, as we were rushing forward to submit our scripts because the lecturer gave us 10 minutes to write and submit our scripts and once he goes out, he would not collect it again which translates to automatic carry-over”.

Adelowo promised that the university would foot the medical bills of the affected students.
Crime › Man Kills Friend Over Ludo Game . by HighChief4(op): 10:13pm On Jun 23, 2011
Policemen attached to Oke-Odo division have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing his friend to death during an argument over winner in a ludo game.

The incident, occurred at the 23-year-old suspect’s one-room apartment around pleasure area of Oke-Odo, at about 7.30pm last Sunday.

The suspect, Ismaila Adeniyi , stared at everyone as he was paraded before newsmen Monday at the Oduduwa Office of the Police Public Relations Officer, unsure of what was going to happen to him . When asked was in police net, he openly declared that he mistakenly sent his bosom friend to an unprepared grave the previous day during a scuffle over winner in a ludo game.

He claimed he was leading his friend whose identity he gave as Olu Afolabi , three -nil . But on the forth round, an argument, according to him, ensued when it became evident he was going to win again. The argument degenerated into fight during which he reportedly stabbed his friend, Afolabi, who died moments after reaching the Isolo general hospital.

However, some eyewitnesses told Crime Alert that efforts were made to dissuade the duo from engaging in the deadly fight when they saw them using dangerous weapons on themselves. “ it all started like a joke, first we saw them exchanging words like they were going to pull down a wall and afterwards, they started punching themselves like boxers and I and some members of their age group went after them and tried to stop the fight.

They were separated for a while, and I left the scene for my apartment. I don’t know what happened next but I heard people screaming at the top of their voices and rushed to see Olu lying still on the pool of his blood. It was like a dream and I’m still waiting to get over it”, Deji Olufowobi, a neighbour to the deceased stated during a visit at the scene.

Muyiwa Ajose, another eyewitness said “these men fought like they were not friends who were living in the same apartment. When I tried to separate them, they rather resorted to the use of sharp -edged broken bottles which they threw at their faces like gladiators in a battle front.

Then, I and others, backed out and left them to their fate. Moments later, I saw one of them writhing on the ground with blood streaming furiously out his abdomen. The other man he was fighting with ran away, but we had no other option than to rush the dying man to the hospital where he later gave up the ghost”.

In an emotional -laden voice, Ismaila in this interview, begged to be forgiven, regretting his action. Narrating, he said, “I never meant to kill him. I only stabbed him in self defence. We were playing ludo in my room Sunday, when all of a sudden , he started abusing me, calling me a mad person because I was leading . I then pushed him and before I knew it , he landed a blow across my face and we started fighting. That is how he used to behave any time one was leading him.

He picked up a bottle and broke it on my head and blood started gushing out. In retaliation and self defence, I picked my own bottle and stabbed him three times. It was at that moment that I realised I had done wrong. I never knew he would die as we rushed him first to a private hospital from where he was referred to Isolo general hospital, where we were told he was dead”

At this point, he bent his head , refusing to speak. When he raised it up, his eyes were filled with tears. Without directing his question at anybody in particular , he asked, “ does it mean I have killed somebody?

Recalling how he met Afolabi, the Kwara state-born suspect said, “ he was my best friend. We met when he joined me as an apprentice in in our master’s shop in Oke-Odo, years back. He was part of my family. In fact, I was told my mother fainted when she heard I had killed my friend. She was rushed to the hospital and I have not set my eyes on her. I regret my action. If I had known, I would not have stabbed him. I would have rushed out of my room. At least, it could have saved me all this trouble”

For the second time, he stopped for a moment, before continuing with an appeal to the bereaved family, particularly the late Afolabi’s mother . A last wish he begged to be granted him, should he be killed , is for the sum of N3,500 which he claimed to have managed to save all his life, to be given to his late friend’s mother. “ I know it will not bring back Afolabi . But let them use it to do one or two things concerning Afolabi’s burial. And if I do not come out of this alive, I will take it as my fate”, he said remorsefully.

Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Samuel Jinadu said the suspect would be charged with murder, advising youths to stop using dangerous objects to attack themselves as it could lead them to same trouble as Ismaila.
Politics › Bankole Sneaks Into Lagos ! by HighChief4(op): 10:10pm On Jun 23, 2011
IMMEDIATE past Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, yesterday arrived Lagos devoid of the fanfare, which accompanied his departure to Abuja shortly after he lost his re-election bid into the House in April.

The former Speaker arrived the VIP Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, about 7:58 p.m. aboard a chartered flight operated with an Hawker Sidney (HS125) marked ZS - BOT.

Bankole, who was the last passenger to disembark from the aircraft, was accompanied by four of his personal aides who pulled some trunk bags as they left the apron.

The former Speaker, who dressed in his usual all white attire and a pair of palm sandals to match, quietly walked into a black Peugeot 607 saloon car that was in the middle of the three-vehicle convoy that came to receive him.

He, however, frustrated attempts by photo-journalists to take his photographs.

The convoy also quietly left the terminal to an unknown destination without the blaring of sirens, which used to signify the arrival of the Speaker, when he was in office.
Politics › Amosun Sacks Ogun Assembly Clerk, Seven Perm Secs. by HighChief4(op): 10:09pm On Jun 23, 2011
FROM the ranks of junior workers, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has taken his battle against the state workforce to the upper cadre.

Yesterday, he told the Clerk of the House of Assembly, Mr. Demola Badejo, the immediate past Accountant-General of the state and the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Pension, Mr. Babatunde Salau, and six Permanent Secretaries to quit.

Their offence: Perceived loyalty to his predecessor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

Other Permanent Secretaries affected were Babajide Oyeti (Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs); Seyi Banjoko (Ministry of Agriculture); Jide Oyenuga (Bureau of Political Affairs and Administration); Kehinde Ogunfowodu (Bureau of Employment Generation); Moshood Opebiyi (Bureau of Economic Planning and Development) and Mufutau Lawal (Teaching Service Commission).

The governor was said to have rained abuses on Oyenuga who he accused of corruption.

A source said yesterday: “Amosun actually called him and said: ‘You are a thief’ and Oyenuga replied: ‘With due respect Mr. Governor, I’m not a thief and never you address me as such”.

The official reason for asking the Permanent Secretaries to go when they are not due for retirement yet was that the state wanted to downsize “to reduce the wastage in the system”.

But those familiar with the rules governing the terms of service of permanent secretaries said even if they are forced to leave the service, their salaries would still be paid for life, so the state would not have gained anything by asking them to go.

“This is a clear case of victimisation. Some of the affected permanent secretaries have been pressurised since the assumption of office of Governor Amosun to say something damning or indicting of Otunba Daniel but they refused to yield to such pressure. How can somebody say that you want to retire permanent secretaries so as to save fund when in actual fact, they will continue to draw their full salaries, even in retirement? This is a case of penny wise, pound foolish,” said the source.

The Nigerian Compass had exclusively reported on Monday that the governor was set to disengage 1,994, workers, recruited by the immediate past administration in the Gateway State, from the public service.

Some of the Permanent Secretaries were said to have received the news of their sack with shock while others reportedly took it in good faith, describing it as “an act of God.”

The Nigerian Compass also learnt that the governor is poised to commence a downward review of the salaries of other permanent secretaries in the civil service.

But when contacted, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant (Media and Communication), Mrs. Funmi Wakama, denied knowledge of the compulsory retirement.

“I am not aware, but I will try to get across to the governor who is currently attending a meeting of the Governors’ Forum in Abuja,” Wakama told reporters in a telephone interview.

The ultimatum given to the governor by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to show commitment to pay the N18,000 minimum wage or face the full wrath of the workers expires today.

The workers’ union has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if the governor refuses to accede to the minimum wage demand as signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan in March.

This is coming on the heels of threat by a human rights activist, Kayode Ajulo, that any governor who is not ready to pay the N18,000 minimum wage should resign or be impeached for violating an extant law.

According to a statement, Ajulo maintained that the payment of the minimum wage was non-negotiable because “it took effect from March 23, 2011”.

His words: “With the long expected review and/or amendment of the National Wage Act, Cap. N61 Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 2004 by both Houses of National Assembly and the congenial signing into law by President Goodluck Jonathan, on 23rd day of March, 2011, it has unambiguously come into effect that Section 1 of the Act is amended in subsection (1) by substituting for the existing subsection (1) a new subsection “(1)”:

“(1) As from the commencement of this Act, it shall be the duty of every employer (except as provided for under the principal Act as amended) to pay a wage not less than the national minimum wage of N18,000 per month to every worker under his establishment”

“By the above provision which takes effect from 23rd March, 2011, the day it was signed into law by the President, the payment of the new minimum wage becomes accruable and is not subject to further negotiation, compromise or wishful thinking of several employers of labour in Nigeria, particularly governors, with the exception of the few that gave indication to pay accordingly”.
Politics › Anenih, Clark’s Rivalry Splits Govs, Pdp In South-south by HighChief4(op): 10:07pm On Jun 23, 2011
THE power tussle between foremost Ijaw leader, Senator Edwin Clark, and former chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),

Chief Tony Anenih, appears to have heightened as the development is gradually taking its toll on the cohesion of the party in the South-South, with party leaders from the zone toeing opposing lines.

Already, the rivalry, which has caught the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan, has created power blocs within the PDP in about four states of the South-South with the governors of the affected states inadvertently being caught in the political tussle between the two elders.

The suppressed cold war between both elders again came to the fore and has remained sustained since the dissolution of the Federal Executive Council by President Jonathan and the call for ministerial nominations from the states.

The frosty relationship between Anenih and Clark became noticeable about three years ago when the latter accused the former Works Minister of working against the interest of Jonathan, who was then the vice-president in the build-up to the 2011 presidential election.

Although there was no evidence to that effect, Clark had accused Anenih of positioning former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, to take over from Jonathan. Clark, from Delta State, had parted ways with Ibori as he accused him of imposing his cousin and current governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, on the state in 2007 with the aid of Anenih who was then chairman of the BoT.

The crisis, which has defied solutions, has been lingering in the state since then to the extent that Clark had twice canvassed support for the governorship candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Chief Great Ogboru, against Uduaghan.

But Nigerian Tribune gathered that not only have both men mustered support for their preferred ministerial nominees in their respective states, they have equally extended their support for different nominees in states other than Edo and Delta, a development that has generated conflict of interests.

A source told Nigerian Tribune that the rivalry was more than the ministerial nominations but the desire to control the politics of the South-South.

“We all know the genesis of the crisis between both elders; they have never hidden their disdain for each other since Chief Clark first made the allegation that the Leader (Anenih) was trying to replace Jonathan with Ibori.

“Even when the issue of the late president’s health came up, and the clamour for Jonathan to act was on, Papa had accused the trio of Ibori, Uduaghan and Anenih as those in the way of Jonathan to take over; and that was the reason for the elder statesman’s strong position against Ibori when the arrest saga was on.

“As I am talking to you now, Mr President is even aware of the development but he would prefer that they sort out their differences, because they are both like a father to him; it is real to that extent because right now, those who want to be ministers or even other appointment seekers have broken into groups in Abuja.

“We now have Anenih group and Clark group, as the lobby for appointments continues; and this is not just in the case of their states; it affects the entire region because even most of the governors have had to get to them separately to lobby for their preferred persons and it is across the zone, except that some of the governors are only being careful in handling the situation.

“It is a development that has created unnecessary camps, because if you think you are going to one of them secretly, you will be surprised that the other would know as you get to him. So artificial barriers have been created amongst our people by the disagreement between the two elders,” he said.

For instance, while Clark has been pushing for the reappointment of former Minister of State for Education and political foe of Governor Uduaghan, Kenneth Gbagi, the governor, with support reportedly coming from Anenih, has been pushing for the former governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the last election, Chief Ovie Omo-Agege.

It is the same situation in Edo State where Clark has openly accused Anenih of unilaterally selecting his cronies and relations, even as he warned that the former BoT chairman’s interference in the nomination process in Delta was a way of reviving Ibori’s influence.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that Clark’s choice of former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, from Rivers State, is against the desire of Governor Rotimi Amaechi
Politics › Tension Over Senate Leader’s Seat . by HighChief4(op): 10:06pm On Jun 23, 2011
The peace hitherto experienced in the Senate is being wrankled as Senators from the North-East threaten to make the Upper Chamber ungovernable should someone from outside their region eventually emerge as the Senate Leader.

The Senators specifically accused President Goodluck Jonathan and Senate President David Mark of attempting to Christianise the Red Chamber by jettisoning the earlier zoning formular of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which alloted the position to their zone.

One of the Senators, who spoke on behalf of the other 14 PDP members from the zone, declared: “The NWC made the proposal for us to have the position, but they said they will have to wait for the President to come back from the United States to seek his endorsement. When they took it to him, he insisted that the South-South must have the position and Senator Ndoma Egba must be the one to occupy it”.

The Senators accused Jonathan of acting in bad faith and that he was actively plotting to deny the zone of its fair share of positioning by insisting that the party zoning arrangement be set aside in favour of his native South-South and especially a particular candidate.

“We are also aware of the plot to alienate us from the scheme of things which is why when the president was confronted with the issue, he said that religion and geographical location will not be used as a basis to select the Senate Leader.

“Instead of even giving us the next most important position which is the Senate Whip, they now said we will only be given the Deputy Leader which is the fifth in line.

“They have a grand plan of making the Senate to be more of a Christian enclave but they won’t succeed because they are only using the platform of Christianity to achieve their selfish interest. That is why many Christian Senators, even from the South-South, are not with them.

“Are they saying that the North-East is not part of the PDP or is the South-South more PDP than us?” they queried.

They also vowed that they would not accept any position given to them by the party other than that of the Senate Leader.

Insisting that the original position of the party must be respected in terms of who becomes the Senate Leader, the Senators threatened to make the Senate ungovernable for Mark if he continues to “trade the path of dishonesty and selfishness” as it is apparent in the matter under question.

“We will fight this with the last drop of our blood,” the Senators added.

The PDP had originally zoned the position of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives to the North-East along with the Senate Leader but the rebellion of members of the House from the North-West with numerical strength, leading to the emergence of Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Emeka Ihedioha as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives changed the equation.

Contacted, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Prof Rufai Alkali, declined comment on the issue.
My prediction is that Abia is the next to fall for APGA. That is if Okorocha does a good job in Imo state. Abians are very connected to what is happening in Owerri.

Ebonyi state is very unknown to me. Of all the South-East states, Ebonyi is a state that I do not know much about.
Some PDP guys have a strong hold in Ebonyi politics, the likes of Egwu and Anyim, but we have some other oppositions and I see a good number of PDP members defecting to other parties before 2015, there is a very bright future for APGA especially if Rochas delivers. I know Abia is next on line
APGA has a great chance of capturing Abia and Ebonyi. But I am not sure about Enugu. Sullivan Chime is a performing governor and Enugu is a PDP stronghold.

Ndigbo, please ignore the fool is trying to derail the thread.
Yeah, Chime is doing just fine, but he was having problems with PDP before Nwodo resigned and I envisage that happening again during next election because He(Chime) would want to project a candidate which might not go down well with other PDP chieftains and this will present the opportunity for APGA, if APGA can get Enugu that means we are there already.

According to the charge, the prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Ogunremi, said Gbolahan, stole a yellow-coloured Elepac SV 3000 gasoline generator valued at N34, 000 from Akintoye Emmanuel, on June 4, 2011, at about 5.00 a.m. at 36, Agric, Olomi area of Ibadan.

The offence, according to the prosecution, was contrary to and punishable under section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 30, Vol. II Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria , 2000.

According to the facts presented by the prosecutor, Gbolahan was stopped by policemen on patrol who saw him standing by the road side at Olomi with the generator on the fateful day.

Suspicious of his movement and the object in his possession, the policemen approached him and asked him where he was going.

Confronted with the charge, Kola, who said that he was running a barbing shop, simply admitted he committed the offence and pleaded guilty.

The Magistrate then ordered that he be imprisoned for two months.
