More indications have emerged concerning the circumstances leading to the alleged killing of a 26-year-old lady Jasmine James by a 22-year-old Nigerian man, Chiedozie Amadi in Houston, Texas. Afrotimes had earlier reported that police arrested Amadi at the scene of the incident. In a statement, Houston Police said witnesses told officers Amadi appeared to intentionally strike the victim with his vehicle as she walked on the sidewalk, causing the vehicle to flip over. Amadi was then seen striking the victim in the head with a metal object. Unconfirmed reports say James was a sex worker and Amadi was her client. It was said that things went awry between the duo when James allegedly stole a yet-to-be-identified object from him and made away with it. Amadi reportedly traced her with his car and caught up with her with her at 9700 Block on Bissonnet Street, where he ran her over before hitting her with the metal object. It was not immediately clear if an altercation occurred at the scene before Amadi hit James with the vehicle. Meanwhile, a magistrate set Amadi’s bail amount at $2,000,000 at the request of the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. “The repeated and violent nature of this incident indicates that defendant poses a threat to the community and public safety everywhere if released,” prosecutor Michael Levine wrote in the DA’s request for the bail amount. If convicted, Amadi faces up to 99 years to life in prison. Source: Afrotimes Newspaper: https://www.facebook.com/AfrotimesNewspaper/photos/a.119381757440035/126894840022060/

A Nigerian man who was earlier charged for allegedly sexually assaulting a female customer while working as a sales consultant has been placed on probation. Israel Okwuchukwu Onwuegbuzie, 23, a University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) student from Nigeria, was originally scheduled to stand trial on the charge of sexual assault. Instead, on May 31 in provincial court in Charlottetown, Onwuegbuzie sat at the defence table next to his lawyer Isaac Quinn and pleaded guilty to the offence. Reading from an agreed statement of facts, Crown attorney John Diamond said that on Saturday, Sept. 11, Onwuegbuzie was working as a sales consultant at Staples on University Avenue in Charlottetown. At around 9 a.m., a woman entered the store looking to buy a desk. Onwuegbuzie spoke to the woman and said her lips were "really turning him on." The woman walked away and continued shopping in another aisle near the back of the store. Onwuegbuzie followed her and put her hand on the crotch area on the outside of his pants. He then kissed her on the side of her face, neck and briefly on her lips, said Diamond. The woman left the store and phoned the manager to complain about the encounter. Inside Staples, the woman was wearing her workplace uniform. Later that day at around 4:45 p.m., Onwuegbuzie showed up at her workplace – a local grocery store – and asked to see her. Onwuegbuzie was recognized as the sales consultant from Staples and was asked by the store's manager to leave. He was arrested the following day on Sept. 12 for sexual assault. Diamond presented a joint recommendation with Quinn for two years of probation and a conditional discharge. Diamond said he spoke with the female victim, and she was satisfied with the recommendation. If Onwuegbuzie doesn't breach the conditions of his probation, he won't have a criminal conviction at the end of the two-year period. Quinn told the court that his client is studying computer science at UPEI on a student visa and plans to graduate in the spring of 2024. Quinn added that his client has a bright future ahead of him, and by pleading guilty, he spared the female victim from testifying at a trial. Quinn noted that a conditional discharge was not contrary to public interest and a criminal conviction could lead to Onwuegbuzie being deported under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Chief Judge Jeff Lantz accepted the joint recommendation. He agreed that a conditional discharge was obviously in Onwuegbuzie's best interest. The recommendation was also not contrary to public interest to have Onwuegbuzie finish his degree at UPEI and learn from the experience. Lantz also summarized a victim impact statement filed with the court, saying that the woman quit her job as a result of the incident. She is also dealing with panic attacks and is fearful of being inside stores and near strangers. During the two-year probation period, Onwuegbuzie is not allowed to have any contact with the victim. He is also required to take programs for sexual deviancy and/or respectful relationships. Other aspects of the sentence require Onwuegbuzie to provide a sample of his DNA to the national databank and pay a $100 victim surcharge. Canada-based Nigerian fans of Afrobeat star, Burna boy have spoken of their plans to ‘capture’ the singer when he comes to North America for concerts in support of his new album Love, Damini. Burna Boy had earlier announced a few concerts in support of his forthcoming album. They will take place in the US and Canada in July. Recall that the Grammy Award-winning Nigerian artiste has been trending for wrong reasons. The Nigerian police are probing his role in the alleged shootings by security operatives attached to him at Nigerian club last week. This is the second time he would be facing police probe in 6 years. In November 2017, the artist was invited by Lagos State Police Command over alleged robbery investigation. But despite his troubles, fans of the musician cannot wait to seize the rare opportunity of the visit of their star to Canada. Speaking recently to Afrotimes News, Kola Michael, an student at the University of Toronto said “Being a die-hard Burna Boy fan right from back in Nigeria, I’ve been waiting earnestly for his show in Canada. Though Montreal is a 6-hour drive away, I am ready and to go! It’s been 4 years I last saw Burna and so I told myself I can’t miss this opportunity” Another fan, Felix said he purchased Burna boy’s concert tickets within a few minutes of the tickets going on sale. “For some reasons I am yet to understand, Nigerian music stars hardly come to Canada. They go to the US, the UK and Europe but rarely visit Canada. I’m so happy Burna Boy will be in Canada this summer. If he had planned to tour America and not visit Canada, we would have captured him from America and brought him to Canada by force” Felix joked. Burna Boy will perform on July 30 at the Osheaga Festival in Montreal, Quebec as well as in Markham Fairgrounds during the Kultureland festival, August 6-7. Those assigned to Canadian immigration officer ‘DM10032’ are finally getting permanent residency after years-long wait. After being stuck in immigration limbo for years, immigration applicants in Nigeria and around the world who had permanent residency applications assigned to one Canadian immigration officer — notoriously known among them as a worker who’s fallen “asleep,” “useless”, or idle — are finally seeing significant movement on their files. Some immigrant hopefuls have even landed in Canada in the past few weeks while others are booking one-way tickets with newly stamped passports in hand — only a couple of months after they told their stories about the torturous wait under an officer only known to them as code “DM10032.” The officer had left their applications largely untouched for years, prompting questions about their employee status or even the person’s existence. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) confirmed that DM10032 was an active employee but didn’t explain why scores of applicants assigned to this officer were left in the dark since they applied to become permanent residents in 2019. It said it doesn’t “comment on personal details.” Now it appears the department has largely cleared a backlog of permanent residency (PR) applicants waiting for more than two years under DM10032. “As soon as this story got published, we discovered that the officer … began to work on these files,” said Oluwaseun Adewolu, who had her residency finalized in the past couple of months after nearly a three-year wait. “Two months after … literally everyone in my WhatsApp group has all gotten PPR [passport requests]. We have quite a number of people from that same group that are going to land [in Canada] this weekend.” Adewolu, who is a member of several social media groups created around Canada’s immigration delays and DM10032, said she knows more than 30 applicants assigned to that officer who have had significant movement on their files in the past two months. Adewolu’s family left Nigeria and landed in Winnipeg in March. She has registered her children in school and has been doing job interviews. “It’s been three weeks but to a large extent, I’ve seen the glamour, I’ve seen the reality of Canada, I’ve seen how welcoming the country is.” ‘The wait is killing us,’ says family “It’s been very depressing, like I go to sleep most nights very sad. I think I’ve lost a bit of myself,” said Ikechukwu Uketui, an optometrist in Nigeria. He applied in November 2019 and his file was assigned to officer code “AB14712.” “It really breaks me mentally, sometimes I just cry … I just can’t wait for it to be over.” Source: Afrotimes Newspaper https://www.facebook.com/AfrotimesNewspaper/photos/a.119381757440035/126521953392682/

The United States embassy in Lagos and Accra are receiving backlash for scheduling visa application interviews for as long as three years. The US government has received loads of petitions over the matter but nothing seems to have changed as the embassy has cited a huge backlog of applications, Covid-19, and reduced staff numbers among the reasons for the extended interview dates. It has emerged that if a Nigerian applied for any kind of visa at their embassies in Lagos or Accra, the earliest time they will be booked for an interview will be in April or May of 2025 – that is at least 36 months after the application. Although the hundreds of Nigerians affected by the situation have petitioned the Department of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration for intervention, nothing has changed since last year. Some people who shared their experiences with Afrotimes Newspaper disclosed that they have had to travel to Liberia and Ivory Coast to apply for their visas to enter the US because, in those countries, the waiting time is much less. “The earliest time you would be booked for an interview, if you are eligible, is somewhere between April and May 2025. This is sad considering the fact that a lot of people making travel arrangements do not make them two years in advance,” one applicant said. Canada’s immigration backlog has grown beyond 2.1 million across all lines of business as of April 29, according to the latest Canadian government data sighted by Afrotimes News. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s backlog has progressed as follows since last summer: • April 30-May 2, 2022: 2,130,385 persons • April 11-12, 2022: 2,031,589 persons • March 15 and 17, 2022: 1,844,424 persons • February 1, 2022: 1,815,628 persons • December 15, 2021: 1,813,144 persons • October 27, 2021: 1,792,404 persons • July 6, 2021: 1,447,474 persons The number of persons in IRCC’s inventory grew by 98,796 in the 18 days between April 11 and April 29. This increase is largely driven by the temporary residence inventory. Over this same period, the permanent residence backlog increased by 638 persons. Between April 12 and May 2, IRCC reduced its citizenship backlog by 258 people. However, despite the slight overall increase in the permanent residence inventory, IRCC has reduced its Express Entry backlog by 4,292 persons since mid-April. The reduction in the Express Entry backlog will allow IRCC to resume all-program draws in early July. Candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) have not been invited to apply for immigration since December 2020. Before the pandemic, the FSWP was the main Express Entry pathway. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates who have not been drawn since September 2021 are also set to receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) again. IRCC had been holding off on inviting these candidates, as the backlog had driven up processing times in excess of the six-month standard for Express Entry-managed programs. Starting in July, the vast majority of new Express Entry applications will be processed within the six-month service standard, according to IRCC. Last month, the Canadian Parliament’s Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM) began a study evaluating IRCC’s backlogs that will culminate in a written report available to the public containing recommendations on how to improve IRCC’s application processing.
