MrCover: Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara state have arrested a suspected serial POS fraudster and fake alert scammer, Victor Adebayo, 24.
Parading the suspect in Ilorin on Friday January 14, the state commandant of the NSCDC, Makinde Iskil Ayinla, said that the suspect had sometimes posed as a pastor to dupe his victims.
He said that the suspect was arrested by the intelligence unit of the corps after he had defrauded many unsuspected people of the amount of money worth more than N700,000.
According to the Civil Defence boss, the suspect who claims to be a Lagos based resident usually send alerts to unsuspected POS operators and will now collect cash from them and disappear into thin air.
"On January 13, 2022, operatives of the NSCDC intelligence and investigations department picked up a suspected serial fraudster who has been going around defrauding people of their hard-earned money," Ayinla stated.
"The suspect was usually going around in his Toyota Corolla car and very neat appearance and would meet POS operators to give him cash and he will now make a fake transfer which he has programmed on his phone,"
The suspect, who confessed that he had been doing it for more than two years, had previously posed as a pastor to convince the POS operators or tell them that his wife is in labour in the hospital and needed a certain amount of money.
Meanwhile, some POS operators in the Ilorin metropolis, especially some that might have fallen victim to fake alert fraudsters before, had thronged the Kwara State Command of the NSCDC, trying to identify the suspected serial fraudster.
The state commandant also appealed to the POS operators and the entire people in the state to be wary of fraudulent act of certain criminal elements who he said are going about with intention of defrauding them of their money.

POS operators are also not helping matters. I suspect the banks are conniving with them by supplying them cash. ATM will not have cash but POS always do.
No! POS agents don't have time for banks, they get their cash at some fuel stations, super markets, shops etc. It's very simple, Oga/Madam give me cash lemme transfer to you. The Paris Saint-Germain forward saw off competition from Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to lift the seventh Ballon d'Or of his incredible career.
Messi claimed a maiden Copa America title with his country during 2021 and was also top scorer in LaLiga for the 2020-21 season with 30 goals as Barcelona finished third.
The 34-year-old also helped Barca win the Copa del Rey before moving to PSG on a free transfer in the summer.
He had collected the honour for a record sixth time in 2019 – one ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo – before the awards were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Most were expecting the prize to go to Lewandowski after he maintained the incredible goal-scoring form that made him favourite for last year's prize before it was scrapped.
The Poland international, 33, finished second after scoring 38 goals in 30 league games for Bayern in 2021, in addition to winning the Bundesliga.
And Kroos was fiercely critical of the decision to name Messi as the winner before also revealing who he voted for in his top three.
Speaking on his podcast, Kroos said: 'It's absolutely not deserved.
'There is no doubt that Messi, with Cristiano, has been the player of the last decade, but this year there should've been others ahead of him.'
Kroos said his top three were Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema, Lewandowski and Jorginho.
Iker Casillas, the legendary former Real Madrid goalkeeper who had some sensational battles with Messi during his career, also admitted the PSG star should not have won the prize.
The Spaniard added: 'It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards.
'Messi is one of the best but you have to know who is the most outstanding player after the season. It's not that hard.'
After winning the award, Messi did acknowledge Lewandowski's achievements over the past two years and said he did 'deserve' the prize.
Messi said: 'You deserve your Ballon d'Or. Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner.
'I think France Football should give you your Ballon d'Or. You have to have it in your house.'
But it was not all criticism for Messi. Match of the Day host Gary Lineker hailed his award as a 'magnificent seven' and described him as a 'truly extraordinary footballer'.
The former England and Barcelona striker tweeted: 'It’s a magnificent seven. Congratulations to Lionel Messi on winning yet another Ballon d’Or.
'A truly extraordinary footballer and an absolute credit to the sport both on and off the pitch.'
However, football fans were also questioning why Messi was named as the winner with a large number on social media insisting it should have gone to Lewandowski or even Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

With his latest success, Messi added to his 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019 trophies. He played down any talk of retirement in his victory speech.
