TravelDubai...the Best City For A Nigerian To Live And Work. The Pros And Cons by hilary26(op): 6:11am On Nov 02, 2014
Dubai is a city determined to retain its heritage while racing at breakneck speed to embrace the 21st century. As a vibrant, international city, it encompasses all the good, bad and ugly of any large city. The  experience of living and working in Dubai can be most enjoyable and a great adventure if expats leave themselves open to the experience and abide by a few simple rules. Here are some pros and cons of living in Dubai.

Cultural awareness in Dubai

It's important to always remember that Dubai is an Arab emirate. While it's the most liberal of all the emirates, there are a few cultural restrictions of which expats must be aware. The Islamicreligion impacts every aspect of Muslims’ lives and they prioritise their life in this order: religion, family, country. The call to prayer occurs five times a day, Muslim women are respected and expats should be aware that some will not be comfortable in the presence of a man.

PRO: Muslim country, but other religions tolerated

Although Dubai is an Islamic emirate, other religions are allowed to be practised (there is a church compound in Jebel Ali with Christian churches and a Sikh temple) but there is a strong warning that no evangelisation will be tolerated. Ramadan, the holy month, will mean shorter hours and lots of Iftar parties in the evening after the fast is broken.

CON: Cultural adjustments needed when in a Muslim country

The call to prayer five times a day can mean that non-Muslims may have to wait a bit to continue their business until Muslims return from prayer. During the holy month of Ramadan work slows to a crawl and most restaurants will be closed during the day or serve a limited menu. No alcohol will be served until the fast is broken at sunset.Arabs are generally gracious people and it is ingrained in their culture to not make anyone lose face. Therefore, they say “no” in such gracious ways that sometimes one is not certain that they have said so, and this can be confusing for expats not used to this. Important cultural restrictions to be aware of: modest dress is required (minimum is being loosely covered from neck to elbow to knees); drunkenness, drug use, dishonest behavior, foul language and public displays of affection are all criminal offenses with severe punishments; the raising of the third finger hand gesture can land one in jail; to beckon someone it's best not to wave with the hand palm up but with the hand palm down; and never argue with or raise your voice to a policeman or other official.

Accommodation in Dubai

Renting property in Dubai is the best option as purchasing a place can be difficult because of the restrictions on foreigners owning property. There are many sections of the city to live in, depending on one's preferences. Dubai Marina is an exclave of expats, Deira and Burj Dubai is the more traditional area. Outer communities include Arabian Ranches and the Green Community. Jumeirah, Al Wasl, Al Safa and Umm Seqeim have lovely residential accommodation. All will have mostly newer high-rise apartments and attached villas available for rent.

PRO: Housing is mostly new and short-term leases are available

Accommodation in Dubai is mostly new and pleasant. Serviced apartments are available everywhere in the city. These come furnished and are serviced as part of the rent; short-term leases are also available for this type of accommodaton.

CON: Dealing with realtors and landlords can be tricky

Annual rents on apartments in Dubai must be paid in full and up front. Some companies will cover this for their employees and then deduct amounts monthly from their wages. Realtors can be difficult to work with. It's better to find a place by word-of-mouth and then go directly to the property or engage a realtor to handle matters thereafter. An agent is required to complete a rental agreement. Maintenance on buildings can be sporadic and absentee owners who do not pay their fees can mean the renter will experience restrictions on use of some of the amenities of the building.

Doing business and working in Dubai

The economy in Dubai is moving forward at a rapid pace. This offers many opportunities, especially for entrepreneurs and professionals. All kinds of services are needed. Most of the goods available in Dubai have been imported. As a young country, the UAE it is still struggling to establish efficient operations in many segments of industry and relies on expats to provide this expertise.

PRO: Lots of opportunities for entrepreneurs and professionals

There exists a never-ending list of services, goods and expertise needed in Dubai and the UAE. There are numerous free-zones for various industry segments that will help a new business get started such as Media City, Healthcare City, Knowledge Village and the Dubai International Financial Centre.

CON: Emiratization and setting up a business can be frustrating

Emiratization, an effort to increase the presence of Emiratis employed in the private sector, is a high priority for the government, and is a serious consideration for all private sector companies. This means it's not uncommon to have an Emirati superior who is less qualified than his subordinates.  Setting up a business in Dubai can be time-consuming and frustrating. Government regulations can be a maze and difficult to understand; it can even be difficult to get the same interpretation when working through the process. There are times when one department is not connecting with another and applicants can run around in circles. There is also the question of ownership – in some cases, an Emirati sponsor is needed to establish a business and the Emirati must own 51 percent of the business.  Be very careful of an employment contract. Everything should be in writing up front i.e. salary, end of service payout, health insurance, etc. Some companies have been known to take advantage of their workers. Expats should not bring their family members over until they have their work visa, which allows them to sponsor family resident visas. For Westerners, the pace of doing business will be slower than they may be used to. Getting a decision made is sometimes the biggest challenge.

Lifestyle in Dubai

PRO: English is widely spoken and the nightlife scene is vibrant

English is a common language in Dubai, and spoken and understood by most people in the emirate. People are generally very friendly and eager to make new friends and, since it's an international city, expats will have the opportunity to make friends from all over the world.  The plethora of fast-food franchises means it's possible to get foods that are familiar. Expats can get anything delivered at almost anytime, including food, groceries, dry cleaning and office supplies. Friday brunch is a popular activity for expats, with every hotel and restaurant offering delicious arrays of food and drink to patrons. Dubai is a fun city that caters to the young. Nightlife is lively but doesn’t start until after 9pm and goes on to the wee hours. Big name entertainment and parties are advertised all the time.  This is a unique city and country that offers quite a lot to see and explore. Dubai boasts museums, film festivals, art festivals and sporting events. To experience a taste of Emirati life there are also the souqs, desert safaris, dune bashing, camel riding and pearl diving experiences. And expats can “shop til they drop” as Dubai is a shopping destination with a mall on almost every corner.

CON: Bureaucracy

Getting official paper work, i.e. resident and work visas, utilities set up, bank accounts opened and mobile phones connected can be a bit frustrating as it can be difficult to navigate bureaucracy in Dubai. Many documents will have to be translated into Arabic. Be sure to use a reliable company. The Dubai Roads and Transportation Authority Al Barsha office offers this service at a nominal fee. Groceries come from all over the world, so expats will need to learn to grocery shop by country of origin. And, since all food is imported, it can be a bit expensive and one's favourite item from home a bit illusive when the supply chain breaks down. Pork will only be available in specially designed areas of some grocery stores. While most modern businesses stay open all day, many traditional shops will close from 1pm to 4pm but they do stay open very late, sometimes until 10pm.  People come and go from Dubai, making it a never-ending circle of suddenly making and losing friends.   Alcohol can only be consumed in certain tourist hotels. Always take a taxi if planning to drink alcohol as there is zero tolerance for driving, which means jail time, with even just one alcoholic drink. If wanting to purchase liquor to be consumed at home, a liquor license is required. Liquor carries a 30 percent tax in Dubai.  Illegal drugs – just don’t do it – will lead to jail time for sure.

Getting around Dubai

PRO: Good public transport

Dubai Metro – if it is going where you want – is a nice, clean, affordable way to move around the city. There is a system of feeder buses offered at most of the major stations. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. For air travel, once expats have their residence visa, they can get an EPass which expedites clearing customs.

CON: Driving can be hazardous and temperatures are extreme

Driving in Dubai is for the stout hearted. The road system is difficult to navigate and the driving can be erratic and fast, especially on the main expressway, Sheikh Zayed Road. There are limited street signs and not all streets have names. Directions are given in landmarks. If making a wrong turn or taking the wrong exit in Dubai, the city is totally unforgiving. It can take more than 30 minutes to get going in the right direction again. Except from November to March, it is far too hot to walk any distance in Dubai.
Christianity EtcRe: Pastor Chris Removes Information About His Wife From Church Website, by hilary26(m): 11:07pm On Aug 31, 2014
Philipmems: I am not a member of his denomination but having heard from both parties I will live you to be the judge considering what women and men are capable of doing.. Pastor Chris O. accused his wife of having bad friends who are influencing her wrongly, she no longer respects anyone especially in the church. He even said that at one time he called the wife so they can settle there differences but she refused to take anything short of a Divorce from the pastor.
Anita is accusing Chris of adultery and infidelity.
At the end of the day my take is that Satan master confusionist has crept into their home either through the man or the woman but wait oh even if its adultery as speculated what happened to our women of steel (1 peter 3:1-3), for better for worse, our mothers stuck to our fathers through thick and thin, never to be distracted by side chicks... Frankly speaking the easiest way for confusion to enter a home na through woman... After all according to the book of Timothy it says a woman was deceive first before Adams.
Read 1 peter 3:1-6 and 1 Corinthians 7:1- 12 especially 10 and 11 and understand that the woman has more role to play in keeping her home together and if it fails shes mainly to be blamed.
See as una deh trivialise the abomination. Sheh na dis man and woman deh see vision for una b4....now the satan deh hv always served in secret has exposed them and all u 'believers' of pastors are quoting the bible to cover their mess.
Whether u believe or not....dis pple are thieves but they are stealing with the only weapon that is legal. Religion.

HealthRe: American Ebola Patients Saved With A "Secret Serum" by hilary26(m): 4:30am On Aug 05, 2014
The moment they decided to return the two doctors home for treatment I knew they have always had the cure.
America is the home factory of every virus. Africa is the test field. What they do is to come as tourists and infect our animals or plants and then go home to wait for results.
It is just business, just like HIV, now the nations with the epidemic will start paying them for the drugs.
In 1984, Robert Gallo filed a patent for his new invention, HIV. Today they tell us the virus got to humans from monkeys because we share certain DNA details with them.
America had the cure for Ebola way back in the 1970s when they manufactured the virus.
For every virus made, they also make the antivirus. Just like in comouters. The software companies that sells anti virus softwares are those who introduce viruses so we may buy their antivirus.

Hon. SuQ Ma'DIQ:
That woman entered the Chimes' family through the back
door. To those that know how it works, such women
always end up like this.
You really are not expecting evil to last forever.
Here is the thru scenario.
Scene 1.
Chime has a daughter, who also happen to have a runs
gal as bossom friend. In trust, she takes runs gal home.
Runs gal sees stupifying affluence. Her runs brain goes to
work. Granted, Sullivan is randy, thinks he has seen all
pants colors. This time he underestimated this particular
runs gal's greed and desperation.
Scene 2.
Plot thickens. Schemings here and there as runs gal
makes every evil move possible to break into Chime's
family by hook or crook. She goes to Babalawo,
Spiritualists etc.
Scene 3.
As the result of runs gal's evil plans takes effect, Chime's
daughter's BOSSOM FRIEND she once innocently took
home suddenly becomes her STEP MOTHER. Battle line
was drawn and Things were no longer at ease.
Scene 4.
Runs gal is from runs family. Her parents and brothers will
do anything for money, even if it means sacrificing their
runs sister. They were all drawn into the gold rush.
Chime's family went to God in prayers. Their prayer point
was: That God should make the scales fall off their
Daddy's eyes. Prayers answered.
Scene 5.
Its vendetta time as Sullivan realises he's been conned by
runs gal. First payback move was to pregnate runs gal's
sister to spite her and her family of wolves. This was also
to prove to her that her juju aint working no more.
Runs gal goes for Sullivans life. He fell ill but as God will
have it he survived.
Scene 6.
Runs gal's juju backfires. She becomes mad. And is finally
barnished and ejected from the position she once usurped,
Wails and tears is heard everywhere in runs gal's family all
THINGS FELL APART. While is thunderous jubilation in
Chime's family as they thank God for their liberation and
family reunion.
TRUE STORY
A good summary there. It trully back fired. I knw the full details and this is a perfect summary.
Be careful whom you call friend.

Music/RadioRe: How Don Jazzy's Twitter Rants Exposed His Business Foolishness And Selfishness by hilary26(m): 4:44pm On Nov 07, 2013
yunfazz: As written by Ms. Uduak Oduok who is an Entertainment Attorney

I began writing, yesterday, about the recent potential legal drama between Don Jazzy and Wande Coal to discuss the alleged claim of Intellectual Property theft and legal issues present, which I will still do, albeit on a different post. However, while writing, I just got tired, like really tired of the state of the industry and the foolishness being served of late.

Eyin Nigerian artists eti su mi, really (you Nigerian artists make me weary, really). Sheesh. Y’all can be off the hook, many times. You’ve got a grown man and so called boss for that matter such as Don Jazzy displaying foolish behavior of the highest order on twitter; and crying about a problem he created in the first place.

What are we supposed to do Don Jazzy? You are the business man, you also should have some scars to show from the epic Mo’Hits fallout/ dissolution that you “get it.” Didn’t you at least learn something from that? What’s good? I really tiyah, for real.

ON A DAY THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALL ABOUT TIWA SAVAGE’S RELEASE OF HER SONG ‘EMINADO’(Goodluck charm) featuring Don Jazzy, Don Jazzy totally pooped on that parade and brought the bad luck charm by undermining Tiwa Savage’s shine with his silly cries on twitter about an alleged theft by his former artist.

Are Wande Coal and Don Jazzy mates? What rubbish?! Why is Don Jazzy, the egbon (older one and adult) and most importantly the boss getting on twitter and stooping down to this kind of level as a business owner and leader in the industry? It is embarrassing and unacceptable. It also is ridiculous because from the facts, HE CREATED THE PROBLEM.

How can you not have your split sheets in place as a producer? I don’t care if the artist is your mother, father, sister, brother, girlfriend, wife, gay partner or what have you. You get that in place!

How, at this point in your career, do you get into a studio with your artist and not delineate the lines on who owns what? If you made music under Mavin Records, the music belongs to Mavin, if you signed the proper legal documents evidencing this basic arrangement. You’ve got the sound recording belonging to Mavin. The lyrics and composition also probably belong to Mavin, at least a large portion, given the kinds of agreement I see artists sign with labels in Nigeria with certain aspects in music publishing that differs from us here in the States, so why are we even here?

You clearly did not do this because Wande Coal can produce the original demo song of which he co-authored with you; with no delineation of those rights spelt out. Are we suppose to cry or be sad for you? Why?

As Wande Coal correctly indicated in his tweet, Jazzy has Coal’s phone number and contacts and could have easily contacted him to resolve the dispute, privately. He did not do so. Instead, he chose to follow an impulsive, selfish and egotistical act on twitter that instantly shifted the attention from the release of Tiwa Savage’s beautiful ‘Eminado’ video, all in less than twenty four hours, to a showing to the world that Nigeria’s music industry and its leaders have no focus, no direction and is a big joke.

When was the last time you saw any of the label heads in the USA, including Jimmy Lovine, Diddy and even Kanye West get on twitter to fight artists who allegedly steal their work?

Okay. Hold up. Wait a minute. Don Jazzy, if you are invoking the law and claiming infringement of your “intellectual property” what exactly are we doing on twitter? That’s all legal speak which means lawyers get involved to either help work things out and get you compensated on some licensing deal, for the sampling or explicit copying of your work, or we get into the courtroom. What are we doing on twitter?

I am truthfully exhausted with the frequency/rate of foolishness coming out of the industry from leaders and industry professionals at large. It is alarming and you should be worried about the state of this music ecosystem, if you care both about your country and music, in general. This is unacceptable.

Don Jazzy owns Mavin Records. Tiwa co-owns 323 with T-Billz. Shouldn’t Don Jazzy at this point in his career know that he undermines the marketing and selling of Tiwa Savage’s song with this foolishness? What’s the brand partnership agreement they signed? Anyone have a copy because there should be a clause preventing this kind of behavior. Yes, I am really tired with the foolishness.

Our industry is just looking a big mess and very stupid to me right about now. We look foolish both locally and internationally. We act stupid with our business ventures, we are very reactionary on social media, we let egos get in the way, from the likes of Jason Njoku to his ex-CEO Michael Ugwu. Y’all didn’t think that I thought Ugwu came with clean hands did you? He was one of the first shouting on AML, right here, when I questioned the rapid jump and growth of IROKO into the music market under IROKING, about how I was dead wrong and all the m/billion page views IROKO received blah, blah.

Well, what happened? Ugwu was the CEO of IROKING, and he did not deliver. That was his terrain. Granted Jason Njoku’s egotistical self got in the way and he released the foolish press release that created what has to be the worse PR and disgraceful employer/employee and pr fail ever for a new brand; but nevertheless, what the heck? IROKING is being scrapped under Ugwu’s watch as CEO. What happened to all the “b/million” views et al. Ugwu had a responsibility to also deliver.

Have y’all heard of Chinedu Echeruo? The Nigerian-American who created HotStop in New York and this year allegedly sold the company to Apple for $1Billion? For all the years Echeruo helped build and operate his company, you never heard the fella display the kind of ego that he should arguably display. As he said, he checked it at the door, and today, we all point to him as a shinning example of what a successful Nigerian owned business and entrepreneur should look like.

Can we all take a page from Echeruo i.e. have a healthy dose of humility, get your entertainment business in order and have even more humility? Who said it would be easy? Practice!

Our industry was exciting, fun, young and filled with so much hope but in less than two years, it looks a shamble. From 9ice, Mo’Hits, Knight House, Storm 360 to eLDee (I am unsure why everyone keeps leaving Trybes Records, including Sarz, of late), EME, to Chocolate City and so many other labels in between, you gotta ask, what the heck is going on? Our creativity is at an all time low and we spew nonsense both on our airways and in our music videos thinking we can sustain this industry with the mess. Industry, what’s really good? Is this it? Like are we for real? Many of you who read AML are industry leaders. What’s really good, leaders? Seriously?

Artists walking out on label and management deals like they are visiting red light districts for one night stands, labels with no basic music business skills promising artists heaven and earth and getting screwed, plus left with heavy debts to deal with, diarrhea on twitter from industry heads and professionals who should know better as a means to resolve their legal issues and the list goes on. Common folks, give me a freaking break!

We want to be like the West, yet we lack the common sense to set the legal precedent and have our Nigerian courts determine legal issues that can move our society forward; to ensure the sustainability and success of our industry. Jesus, what’s with this foolishness? Really? Why do we as a community of business owners and industry professionals keep choosing to display juvenile behavior on social media platforms that really undermine the industry; and also affect our sister industries like fashion and film?

We are now at an age where the young ones look up to us and WE MUST respect ourselves with our dealings in front of them and with them. The baton has passed on to us and we are doing a terrible job as it stands with how we carry on with the business of music and resolving our issues. If we have issues with our young ones, then sort them out privately because if we can’t respect those behind us, guess what, they won’t respect us either and what lies ahead will not be pretty for us.

I, for the life of me, have no idea why we are even here. Can anyone tell me? Oh! Don Jazzy says Wande Coal stole his song from him. Don Jazzy at every step of this particular brouhaha clearly failed to protect the alleged rights stolen, which is unacceptable from a seasoned businessman, artist and music producer WHO WAS THE LABEL BOSS FOR A YOUNG MAN THAT HAS WORKED WITH AND LOOKED UP TO HIM FOR HIS ENTIRE CAREER! But, oh! We are suppose to cry with him on twitter. Because why?

Oh! And don’t get me started on COSON, MCSN and all the other entities adding to the current foolishness in the industry.

*Sigh* I’m tired from all the foolishness. Sheesh.

-Uduak

Some of us even hold metings as club fans ....when I see this pple having a meeting under a leaking roof of one shabby roadside bar all in the name of football. ...and I watch the news and see greatgrand fathers like Buhari getting set to rule Nigeria 2015, I always cry. our youths have seen and embraced poverty and cowardice.....the qualities of fools. Misplaced priority. The day we leave the western lifestyle and try to solve our local problems, that's the day our politicians will start to do the work they actually know how to do.
They know we are busy watching football that's why they decided to continue chopping the national reserve and fortune dry....peeping at us thru the tinted glasses to knw whether our attention is coming to politics.....if we start coming, the ask another company to introduce a new reality show....lol!

Installing Husband - A woman writes to the IT Technical support Guy
Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0and I noticed a distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0..

In addition, Husband 1.0uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5,and then installed undesirable programs such as NEWS 5..0, MONEY 3.0 and CRICKET 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system..

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5..3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,

DEAR Madam,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme. htmland try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.

If that application works as designed, Husband1..0should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5..

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5 or Beer 6.1.

Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.

You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.

We recommend: Cooking 3.0 and Hot Looks 7.7.

Good Luck Madam!
