Daily Manna: Damned Through Pride Wednesday 31, July 2013 TEXT: OBADIAH 1-9 KEY VERSE: “The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD” (Obadiah 3,4). Pride is often defined as an exaggerated sense of self-worth; a supremacist and negative viewpoint that deceives a person into believing that he/she is superior to others. The proud is always a victim of a perverted mindset which fails to accept the fact that one’s life is not determined by self-worth. It is instead governed by the networth which is essentially determined from above. Our text today reveals the misery and reproach that came upon the nation of Edom, the descendant of Esau as a result of pride and the mischievous activities that they were involved in. Edom was Judah’s southern neighbour with whom she shared a common boundary. As close as the inhabitants were to Judah, they nonetheless had great bitterness against Judah. Edom prided herself in the safety of their city which was cut into a solid rock cliff, the feeling of their sufficiency, their wealth, their wisdom and their allies. Obadiah declared that their sense of self-sufficiency and pride will be judged by God. He further affirmed that God will humiliate and bring them to reproach. The Bible warns that pride is the surest route to destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Just as Edom fell, so will the proud people fall. A humble person is more secure than the proud. A proud person portends a bloated view of himself and exposes himself to unnecessary attack and confrontation. The humble however remains lowly no matter who he is. In this state of lowliness, he receives grace to make more progress in life because he daily depends on God. A believer who is a product of grace can never permit a strand of pride in his or her life, lest he/she loses his peace and attachment to God. If there is a semblance of pride in you, spare no effort in getting rid of it, for you run the grave risk of incurring the ire which God reserves for the proud. Daily Manna: A Spirit-Inspired Ministry Tuesday 30, July 2013 TEXT: MICAH 3:1-12 KEY VERSE: “But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin” (Micah 3:8 ). Abraham Lincoln once said that he had no difficulty in finding men who would shed the last drop of blood for America. His difficulty was finding those who would shed the first drop. Nothing needs more of the Spirit of God than the preaching which declares to men their sins. Micah denounced the sins of the leaders, priests, prophets and all those whose responsibility was to teach the people the word of God. These were elders who were supposed to live among the people to direct and instruct them in the things of God, who had instead moved into Jerusalem for a mere political disposition. The leaders who should have known the law and taught the people accordingly had set the law aside and had become the worst of sinners. They took advantage of the very people they were supposed to serve. The leaders had no compassion or respect for those they were supposed to serve. They treated the people miserably in order to satisfy their own desires. They treated God’s people with disdain and had the effrontery to ask for God’s help when they found themselves in trouble. As it was in Micah’s day, so it is today. Men who ought to be true teachers of God’s word have become the worst culprits in distorting the word, interpreting and applying it for purely secular and pecuniary considerations. No wonder the word no longer transform life in many assemblies today. Micah remained true to his calling and proclaimed God’s word with great conviction. He attributed the power of his ministry to God’s Spirit (verse 8 ). The work of God cannot be done effectively through a man’s power and strength. Hence, the disciples were promised the power of the Holy Spirit to enable them do the work successfully (Acts 1:8 ). At whatever level a believer finds himself, God expects him to declare His word not “with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power!” Be like Micah and be true in declaring God’s word and living it out. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The righteous is as bold as a lion. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: Aglow In The Spirit Monday 29, July 2013 TEXT: GALATIANS 5:19-26 KEY VERSE: “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another” (Galatians 5:25,26). Dr. Charles Weigle, the composer of the favourite hymn, “No one ever cared for me like Jesus” once visited Pasadena, California. Early that morning, he had an opportunity to walk through some of the famous rose gardens when the full fragrance of the flowers filled the air. Later in the day, he arrived at the hotel where a Bible conference was being held. As he took his seat, a man turned to him and said, “Dr. Weigle, I know where you’ve been. You toured one of our lovely gardens, for I can smell the pleasant aroma on your clothing.” The Spirit produces character traits which are found in the nature of Christ. They are the by-products of a life anchored in Christ, by-products that can never be cultivated without abiding fully in Him. If we want the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us, we must join our lives to His, know Him, love Him, remember Him and imitate Him. The result will be that we will fulfill the intended purpose of the law – absolute love for God and man. Those who profess to have received the Spirit of Christ ought to make manifest proper fruit of the Spirit evidenced by Spirit-inspired principles and godly practices. Paul the Apostle went further to caution the Galatian Christians against pride and vainglory. This, according to him, would lead them to provoke and envy one another. The glory that comes from men is fleeting and sensual. Many have narrowed fruit-bearing to mere service. How mistaken such are because every item of the fruit of the Spirit has to do with character and behaviour. Hence, walking and living in the Spirit involves the manifestation of Christ-likeness of character that is made possible through the vicarious death of the Saviour on the cross at Calvary. Our ultimate resolve must be to walk so closely with the Lord that the fragrance of His grace undergirds everything in our lives. That done, people around us will surely acknowledge that we have been with Jesus. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Christ in the believer is the hope of glory. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: The Only Dependable Friend Sunday 28, July 2013 TEXT: JOB 6:4-30 KEY VERSE: “My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away” (Job 6:15). An English publication offered a prize for the best definition of a friend. Among the thousands of answers received were the following: “one who multiplies joys, divides grief”, “one who understands our silence”, “a volume of sympathy bound in cloth”, “a watch which beats true for all time and never runs down”. But here is the definition that won the prize: “a friend is the one who comes in when the whole world has gone out”. This award-winning definition corroborates the definition of friendship in the Holy Writ. “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). In the text under reference, Job complained of his three friends. He was glad when they first came to his side thinking they would offer him comfort in his sore distress. Instead, they began to probe into his life, to find out the secret sin which he had committed on account of the troubles that had befallen him. They held that any misfortune was always because of unconfessed sin. They felt that he was hiding some secret misdeeds which they urged him to confess. Job saw them as miserable comforters who cruelly misunderstood him. He compared them to a desert stream choked with ice and snow during winter rain, but dwindle and dry up on the first approach of summer. This foregoing is the typical example of human friendships. But how great a contrast to the love and friendship of Jesus! Not like a brook that dries up in time of drought, but like a well of water springing up within the heart forever. He does not merely give consolation and sympathy, but He is the great Comforter. He imparts Himself. His promises chase away our fears as His Spirit reminds us of the words: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee”. Nothing gives Him greater joy than to be a perfect circle of which earth’s friendship are broken arcs. Please accept Him as your Friend, Saviour and Master and discover a true friend indeed. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: In Jesus only is found a friend in need; a friend indeed. |

Daily Manna: Death In The Pot? Friday 26, July 2013 TEXT: 2 KINGS 4:38-44 KEY VERSE: “So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof” (2 Kings 4:40). Truly, the blessing of the Lord “maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it” (Proverbs 10:22). How often we see the very pleasures and attainments of the world becoming the means of downfall, sorrow or death of those who get them. But for those who trust in the Lord, His providence never plays such trick on them. Elisha, in today’s text, had just returned from his providential sojourn at the home of the Shunammite woman to the company of the school of prophets located in Gilgal. There was famine in the land. As he catered for the spiritual need of the budding prophets by teaching them God’s word, he was equally concerned about their physical needs. He instructed his servant to prepare meal for them. In the course of making the pottage, an unnamed gatherer of herbs had mistakenly included poisonous herbs which caused the unsuspecting eaters instant stomach cramps. Elisha heeded their cry and sanctified the whole food with a meal (flour) tossed into the death pot. He also miraculously fed a hundred with only twenty loaves. This episode holds great lessons for us. We must be rest assured that God is interested in our overall well-being and makes necessary provision for us even in difficult times. Care must be taken, however, as to the solution “herbs” we gather in a bid to meet our needs. Today, there are so many poisonous ideas, doctrines and prophecies that appear so attractive to the untrained minds but at the end they produce sorrow and death. God’s intervention through Elisha shows that God is able to turn our situations around from bad to good once we trust Him. Settle it also in your mind that “little is much when God is in it”. There is no basis for fear when we walk with the Lord. Have you discovered what tastes like death in your ‘pot’? Hand the matter back to the Lord in faith, ensuring that you are within the circle of His will. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If we remain innocent, God often turns our mistakes into miracles. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: Our Indispensable Home Keys Jul 25 Thursday 2013 TEXT: PSALM 84:1-12 KEY VERSE: “My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God” (Psalm 84:2). The first and most important step for anyone who wants to acquire typing skills is to get acquainted with the home keys. The home keys comprising eight keys are on the middle row of the keyboard. These keys are ASDF (left to centre) and ;LKJ (right to centre). Once your eight fingers are appropriately rested on these keys, other keys are in reach of specific fingers. They are called home keys because your fingers must always return to them. If your fingers are off the home keys, your typing will lack accuracy, speed and efficiency. In today’s text, the Psalmist recognised the “home keys” of his life – God, His presence and ordinances. The psalm is supposed to be that of King David written at the time he was forced out of Jerusalem through Absalom’s rebellion. The wandering David was deprived of the joys of true and edifying worship in God’s tabernacle. He longed for this blessedness with utmost passion and devotion. Whatever his exile afforded him – good or bad – he was not at home elsewhere. His was like the case of a bird that wanders from her nest (Proverbs 27:8 ) and therefore never at ease. He passionately desired and cried for the courts of the Lord, nay, for the living God Himself. David also coveted the blessings of those that dwell in the house of God. These people may not have much of worldly possessions, privileges and positions, but by excellent estimation, they are the most blessed of the earth. It is possible that, for whatever reasons, you have gone off the “home keys”. But down deep in your heart this moment, there is a longing for “home”. The edifying fellowship you had in a true Bible believing church and the intimate communion enjoyed with the Lord now lost can be restored. Simply and humbly retrace your steps to the “home keys”. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: No worldly enjoyment can quench the thirst of a heart that truly pants after God. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Daily Manna: The War Within Tuesday 23, July 2013 TEXT: GALATIANS 5:13-18 KEY VERSE: “For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would” (Galatians 5:17). War is bad. Civil war is worse. It produces no winner – the winner is a loser. The American Civil War (1861-1865) recorded over a million casualties. The Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970) claimed about three million lives. The Chinese Civil War (1945-1949) recorded over six million casualties. Added to these irretrievable losses are colossal economic setbacks and hard-to-repair social dislocations. Civil war proves more deadly than external aggression. Today’s text talks about another kind of civil war. It is the war that goes on within each of us which is as tricky as the normal civil war but portends eternal outcome. This describes the struggle between the flesh and the spirit, between internal corruption and conviction. The epistle had been addressing the problem of false doctrines that was making the rounds among the Galatians regarding obligations to ceremonial law. It urged the believers to stand fast in the liberty wherewith Christ had made them free. But this liberty is neither a licence to sin nor freedom from God’s moral law. In particular, believers are exhorted to walk in the Spirit which is the only way we can win the said civil war and be predisposed to demonstrate love which is the sum of the law. Those who walk in the flesh exhibit carnal traits that promote sin and strife even among church members. Pride, anger, ill-feeling and harsh tempers in a person show that he or she is still walking in the flesh and therefore is losing in the said battle. Walking in the Spirit implies yielding to the tender influence and grace from the Holy Spirit that come by spiritual interactions and application of God’s word. The victory that Christ scored over the devil, the author of sin, translates to our own victory. It is God’s design that every Christian lives an overcoming life on a daily basis. But this is only possible when the believer devotedly yields to the regenerating and sanctifying influence of God’s Spirit. Are you winning the civil war? THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Victory over Satan and sin is defined by victory over self. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

NB This is for yesterday and today a double doze for you God Bless You as you read.... Daily Manna: “It Is Well” Jul 21 Sunday 2013 TEXT: 2 KINGS 4:18-37 KEY VERSE: “Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well” (2 Kings 4:26). With over 186 patents and honorary doctorate degrees from 30 universities, American inventor, Charles Franklin Kettering (1876 –1958), was a man of no mean achievement. Here is his counsel: “believe and act as if it were impossible to fail”. This agrees with the scriptural principle of calling “those things which be not as though they were” (Romans 4:17). One word for this attitude is FAITH, one of the most powerful forces that govern the world. The Shunammite woman in today’s text made a profound confession of faith in the face of trial. She had every cause to resort to wailing. What can be more agonizing than for a barren woman who had a miracle child in old age to suddenly lose the child after he had grown up? The child died after complaining of headache to his dad. She simply kept his body in the room earlier created for Elisha and went off to seek divine intervention through the man of God. She avoided discouragement from people. She obtained permission from her husband to go to the man of God without hinting him of the death of the boy. Neither did she enter into a dialogue with Gehazi who was sent by Elisha to inquire about her need. She had said to her husband, “it shall be well”. And to Gehazi, she answered, “it is well”. But when she got to Elisha, she laid herself and her trouble at his feet. Her faith, characterized by her confidence, hope, positive affirmation, paid off – her son was restored to life through Elisha’s peculiar ministration. What challenge are you facing today that is more hopeless and painful than the Shunammite faced? If God honored her faith by restoring the life of her dead child, He can solve your problems. But switch on to the ‘it is well’ attitude of faith and take the matter to God through prayer. THOUGHT FOR TODAY: The greatest limiting factor in the world is doubt. Daily Manna: Spiritual Suicide Monday 22, July 2013 TEXT: EZEKIEL 4:1-8 KEY VERSE: “Lie thou also upon thy left side, and lay the iniquity of the house of Israel upon it: according to the number of the days that thou shalt lie upon it thou shalt bear their iniquity” (Ezekiel 4:4). “From whence shall we expect the approach of danger? Shall some trans-Atlantic military giant step the earth and crush us at a blow? Never. All the armies of Europe and Asia... could not by force take a drink from the Ohio River or make a track on the Blue Ridge in the trial of a thousand years. No, if destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men we will live forever or die by suicide.” That was Abraham Lincoln’s submission on the American Civil War. Lincoln’s observation implies that America could only be conquered through self-destruction. Those who are conversant with the history of the Jews will agree that this observation equally applies to them. Israel had the privilege of being a chosen race whose destiny was directly in the hand of God. Jerusalem, in particular, was regarded as the City of God (Psalm 46:4). Its inhabitants therefore needed not to be afraid of being crushed by any invader. As proven by scriptural accounts, the only thing that could predispose them to defeat was sin – rebellion against God. One of such situations is found in today’s text. Prophet Ezekiel was instructed by God to demonstrate the impending siege of Jerusalem by the Chaldean army and the consequent depression the Jews would suffer. This was done by a series of prophetic actions which included his laying siege to the portrait of Jerusalem and lying before it first on one side for 390 days, and then on the other side for 40 days. It served to douse the pride of rebellious and presumptuous Jews many of whom were already in captivity, who relied on mere strength of the city. Similarly, true Christians are more than conquerors. The devil, his demons and human agents cannot overcome them. This is in so far as the Christian is in right standing with God. Indulging in sin is akin to a suicide attempt and renders the Christian vulnerable. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The surest path to spiritual defeat is sin. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: Not On A Revenge Mission Saturday 20, July 2013 TEXT: PSALM 83:1-18 KEY VERSE: “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth” (Psalm 83:18). There is a general belief that one must take back a pound of flesh from those who have hurt or cheated him. Retaliatory and vengeful tendency is so rife in the land that lasting peace has become elusive. One is considered weak, foolish and stupid if he refuses to revenge and stand-up to those who have wronged them or cheated them. This tendency reveals the depravity of the human nature. When we treat others better than they treat us, we take the high road of honour and nobility. In our passage today, we find Asaph praying the kind of prayer characteristic of Old Testament saints. He calls on God to rise and take up judgment against those who have set themselves against Him and the people of God. Even then, this prayer is very instructive to today’s believers. Instead of taking up arms ourselves against those who are unjust to us and treat us badly, we can hand them over to God in prayer to avenge for us. It is not proper for Christians to take up arms against their persecutors. And even when we hand them over to God to handle, it is not that God should bring them to damnable judgment. Rather, it should be that through the chastisement of God on them, they will come to recognize the supremacy of God and submit to Him. That was the whole essence of the Psalmist’s prayer. We cannot pray with a bitter spirit against our enemies and expect God to hear us. That is not the way of the New Testament Christians and that is not the way Christ taught us. What He taught us is to forgive and to love. He didn’t seek revenge against those who accused Him wrongly and who drove those agonizing nails into His hands. Instead, He prayed, “Father, forgive them…” That is what He has taught us to do; and that is what we must do. THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Learn to let go; never embark on a revenge mission. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: Beyond Remorse Friday 19, July 2013 TEXT: 2 CORINTHIANS 7:8-16 KEY VERSE: “For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter” (2 Corinthians 7:11). Often times, people tend to put forth a show of regret and repentance over a wrong act. But this, most times, is when such wrong or evil deed once concealed is about to be revealed. For fear of shame and avoidance of the consequences of their actions, they express regret and repentance. But as we take a closer look at it, such repentance is at best cosmetic; it is not genuine. If there was no chance for their evil deeds to be discovered and if there were no consequences for their wrong actions, they wouldn’t see the need to repent. From our text today, genuine repentance goes beyond mere remorse for sin. It is the true acknowledgment of the sinfulness of one’s actions. It comes from a conviction that one has sinned and not just because one’s sins are about to be exposed or for fear of judgment. It is the willing acceptance of one’s actions as being evil and not just a coerced admission of guilt. What follows will show how real the repentance is. There will be a readiness to quit subsequent sinful actions and a readiness to restitute, where necessary. There will be watchfulness and carefulness to avoid falling into such evil again. This is followed by a genuine desire to always do right and point other evil doers to the right path. It is this kind of repentance that gets forgiveness and pardon from God, no matter the enormity of the evil or sin involved. God has promised to fully pardon all those who will truly repent of their sins. There is no point trying to hide your evil deed hoping that no one will get to know. Whether it is liked or not, evil deeds will become open secret one day. Surely, everyone’s sin will find him/her out. If you feel condemned within, kneel before the Lord and open-up to Him. He will forgive if you truly repent. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A concealed sin is a time bomb waiting to explode. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below.
