Daily Manna: The Storm Will Cease Monday 12, August 2013 TEXT: JOB 7:1-11 KEY VERSE: “As a servant earnestly desireth the shadow, and as an hireling looketh for the reward of his work: So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me... and I am not” (Job 7:2,3,8 ). Lewis Thomas, American scientist, once noted, “We are, perhaps uniquely among the earth’s creatures, the worrying animal. We worry away our lives, fearing the future, discontent with the present, unable to take in the idea of dying, unable to sit still.” Job, in our text today, was faced with some form of affliction which brought severe pain to him. His situation was quite terrible that he despaired of life. His grief showed in his utterances like “months of vanity”; “wearisome nights”; “skin broken… and loathsome”; “my days are spent without hope”; “the eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more.” Similarly today, many people who find themselves in undesirable situations are worried and losing hope as if the Lord is no longer on the throne. Sinners have cause to worry as God is angry with them every day (Psalm 7:11). Though afflictions, persecution, denials, troubles, deprivations and a host of other inconveniences may come the way of believers, God wants us to consider such as trial of faith, which, if we remain faithful, will soon or eventually peter out. The promise of God to His children is, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). So, whatever storm we are passing through now is just for a moment; storms don’t last forever. Therefore, we should not be sorrowful like those who have no hope. A song writer asks: “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life; when the clouds unfold their wings of strife; when the strong tides lift and the cables strain?” Do not forget that Christ is the solid Rock on which the anchor holds. Soon, every threatening storm will cease. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: At the end of the tunnel, there will be light. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Daily Manna: Boundless Grace Sunday 11, August 2013 TEXT: TITUS 2:9-15 KEY VERSE: “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world” (Titus 2:11,12). The grace of God is inexhaustible. Made available through the vicarious death of Jesus Christ, everyone can receive salvation from sin through it. Interestingly, the same grace that brings salvation to all men does not come without making impact. It teaches us to deny ungodliness, worldly lust, live soberly, righteously, godly in this present world and look for the rapture and the second advent of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately however, this demand is what many are not comfortable with. They cannot bring themselves to conform to it; therefore, they walk in their own way; some even think, erroneously though, that it is impossible to do it. What ignorance! It is gladdening to note that countless number of people have latched on to this boundless grace of God. Those who are still living a defeated life are not visionary enough to see that God is limitless in power and might, and with Jesus Christ on our side we can do all things through His strength. Who could ever imagine that a man can stand for righteousness and as a result have the mouth of lions shut for him? Or that the righteousness being despised by some could make some people walk in the midst of a fiery burning furnace and not be burnt? Or that a man could endure terrible persecutions (sold into slavery, lied against and cast into prison) and end up being lifted to become the prime minister of a whole nation? Obviously, the possibilities of grace are great. All wise people repent of sin, obtain God’s grace and live by it. To join the wise, do likewise. After salvation, abide in the Lord and keep living the overcoming life till the end. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The grace of God never leaves us where it meets us. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: Misery of the Unforgiving Saturday 10, August 2013 TEXT: OBADIAH 10-21 KEY VERSE: “For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever” (Obadiah 10). Henry Ward Beecher, an American preacher once said in a sermon, “the cynic is a man who never sees a good quality in a man, and never fails to see a bad one. He is the human owl, vigilant in darkness, and blind to light, mousing for vermin, and never seeing noble game.” This appears to be an apt description of Edom’s attitude towards Jacob, his twin brother, which God considers punishable. The frosty relationship between Edom and Israel had antecedents. From the time Esau, the progenitor of the Edomites sold his birthright to Jacob, things had never remained normal between the two. From that time, Esau continued to antagonise anything that is Jacob’s. Most unfortunately, he passed this animosity on to his children who later did terrible things against Jacob’s lineage. God considered this unacceptable and unpardonable. His consequent verdict was that Edom would be wiped out from the surface of the earth (verse 10). Unforgiveness is a deadly sin which has the capacity to frustrate the grace of God in a believer’s life. It has wickedness, hatred and murder as siblings. It is for this reason that the Bible counsels that we do away with little foxes that spoil the vine. If you already have a challenge with unforgiveness in your life, why not return to the Cross and there abide until God pours His righteousness into your heart. God’s verdict against Edom was justified. It was a nation that opposed all that God initiated, especially, His love and plan for Israel. As Esau was profane and refused to retain God in his knowledge, so were his descendants. It is amazing how a simple act of indiscretion could become a monster which eventually destroyed the foundation of the Edomite nation. Sin is deadly. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Sow what you expect to reap. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: A Plea For Revival Friday 09, August 2013 TEXT: PSALM 85:1-13 KEY VERSE: “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation” (Psalm 85:6,7). God often grants re-awakening when men recognize their deep spiritual needs and in heart-wrenching agony, plead with Him to come to their aid. When the conditions are met, God releases His power. Israel as a nation is favoured by God. After regaining freedom from Egyptian captivity, God led them to the Promised Land in spite of their inconsistent walk with Him. The inconsistency of the Israelites’ walk with God developed out of their familiarity with Him. With contempt for Him and His word, they lived and acted on the dictates of their own evil imaginations. Absalom’s conspiracy against King David showed a lack of fear for God and His Word. The situation polarised Israel as a nation and threw the society into severe hardship and sorrow. Absalom paid for his crime and his co-rebels also suffered a similar fate. For a nation to go into civil war, David realized there must have been a lot of strain in their inter-personal relationships. But more than that, he knew there must have been hatred, inordinate ambition and hearts strayed away from God; hence, God permitted the unfortunate incident. Therefore, the nation needed a spiritual re-awakening in order to get back to the very centre of the will of God. Many Christian assemblies today have become cold. In many places, the glory of God has departed. It is not re-organisation and re-modelling that is needed but a heaven-sent revival. So, we must abase ourselves and cry aloud for revival. And God, in His mercy, will kindle His fire of revival in our lives and churches. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A child that stretches his hands is ready for a warm embrace. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: Paradigm of Chastity Thursday 08, August 2013 TEXT: TITUS 2:1-8 KEY VERSE: “To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands ...In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity” (Titus 2:5,7). The world writhed in moral pain and spiritual shock some twenty-five years ago, when a famous American televangelist was found to have engaged in secret involvement with prostitutes in sleazy motels. There were incriminating pictures that revealed the preacher’s sin with one of his consorts showing up to claim she posed naked for him in one of the photographs. Later, the culprit confessed, reading King David’s masterpiece of poetic contrition in Psalm 51. But much damage had been inflicted on the Name of God. One prostitute declared: “I wouldn’t want him around my children.” His indiscretion hurt his soul, the body of Christ and gospel-preaching efforts. God is keenly aware of the present and eternal dangers that arise when believers and leaders in the church refuse to abide by this biblical instruction: “Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” (2 Timothy 2:19). It is a constant reminder that breathes on every page of the Holy Writ. In the text today, God inspired Apostle Paul to write that we all should be “discreet, chaste… that the word of God be not blasphemed… and in all things showing thyself a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity … that he that is of a contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you” (Titus 2:5,7, .The doctrine of holiness, righteous living, love, faith, patience, preaching, studying the Word of God etc. must first abide in the leader and believers in Christ before they can impart them. It is the highest level of hypocrisy to preach and not practise what you preach. Heaven’s severe judgment will fall on those who perpetrate this transgression if they do not repent. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A soul-winner cannot offer the sinner what he does not possess. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: From Greed To Disgrace Wednesday 07, August 2013 TEXT: 2 KINGS 5:15-27 KEY VERSE: “...Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?” (2 Kings 5:26). Howard Hughes was the famous American billionaire who amassed great wealth that he did not enjoy. At death in Texas, United States of America in April, 1976, he was worth 1.5 billion US dollars, making him one of the wealthiest in the world. But alas, he died in ‘extremely poor physical condition’. One account says Hughes ‘suffered from malnutrition’. What happened to his colossal fortune? Several centuries before him, a man called Gehazi, an aide of Elisha, a great man of God, who by virtue of that position ought to know better, caved into acquiring wealth he could not enjoy. While his master aimed at turning a Gentile away from his idol to the true God through healing of his leprosy, Gehazi sought to make merchandise of the whole show. Elisha turned down the juicy offer from Naaman, the leprous leader of the Syrian army because it was not “a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep and oxen and menservants and maidservants”. Driven by greed, Gehazi grabbed the gifts - a dreadful misadventure that made him to become a leper “as white as snow” while the soldier’s skin returned to normal “again like unto the flesh of a little child and he was clean.” Believers must watch against the tendency for greed in God’s service. Christ our Lord says, “Freely ye have received, freely give.” He also warns: “For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world and lose himself or be cast away?” Our consolation does not lie with filthy lucre and material gratifications. Instead, it lies in our faithfulness and obedience to the Master who will faithfully reward us in time and eternity. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Material things cannot adequately reward our selfless service for God. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: The World To Come Tuesday 06, August 2013 TEXT: MICAH 4:1-7 KEY VERSE: “And he shall judge among many people... and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Micah 4:3). The United Nations was set up six years after the Second World War to maintain international peace and security, and take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threat to the peace. The promoters of this world body then went on to engrave this Bible prophecy on the cornerstone of the UN headquarters: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruninghooks: Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” This is extracted from the prophecies of Micah 4:3 and Isaiah 2:4. Yet, between the pursuit of peace by a mere human instrumentality and by a divine plan, there exists a wide chasm. While the former has been plagued by imprecision, lack of control over the affairs of man and blindness about the future, the latter possesses prophetic accuracy, a firm grip on the activities of man and a far-sighted look reaching into eternity. We must therefore rely on the plan of God to bring peace not only into our tormented world, but also into every troubled soul. The sinful soul cannot access the peace predicted in our text without repentance and faith in the atoning work of Christ. Receiving Christ, the Prince of peace as Lord and Saviour is what brings inner peace to the individual who also becomes a member of the Kingdom where “the Lord shall reign over them…forever” (Micah 4:7). The Scripture enjoins the steadfast believer in Christ to prepare for the day of reward, but vengeance awaits unbelievers and opposers of the truth. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Jesus is the Anchor of the soul with the power to save to the uttermost. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |

Daily Manna: What Do You Sow? Monday 05, August 2013 TEXT: GALATIANS 6:1-10 KEY VERSE: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Christopher Sholes was once concerned about his pastor who’d been busy all week visiting victims of an epidemic, comforting the bereaved and conducting funerals. Consequently, he had no time to write his Sunday sermons. One day, Sholes, discussing with a friend what should be done, said, ‘It seems a pity there aren’t a quick method of writing for busy folks like pastors.’ His friend replied, ‘Why not invent a machine?’ Sholes replied, ‘I’ll try.’ That rainy afternoon was the beginning of months of hard work. Finally, a group assembled one day to see him type out on paper in capital letters, C. LATHAM SHOLES, NOV 1867.” If the world owes such ground-breaking technological development to Christians, it certainly owes far more to them for the hope they have brought to depraved and forlorn man through the gospel of Jesus Christ. What would have become of humanity without the teaching that God cannot be deceived nor be mocked? The whole of Adam’s race would have receded into jungle law without the teaching that “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap”, and that we should “not be weary in welldoing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.” Today’s reading also exhorts us “to do good to all men”. Since Christ brought peace to our troubled world, it is the sacred responsibility of all saints to show forth the praises of Him who saves and calls out of darkness into His marvelous light. Good works, piety, deeds of kindness and hospitality must always flow from the bosom of grateful saints. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Everyone will reap the fruits of the type of seed he sows. |
Daily Manna: What A Friend In Jesus? Sunday 04, August 2013 TEXT: JOB 6:14-30 KEY VERSE: “My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away” (Job 6:15). In moment of sorrow, Job learnt some bitter lessons: the friends he leaned on for succour turned into strident critics; his wife who ought to have been his comforter was the one urging apostasy and blasphemous confrontation with God; and his health and wealth were no longer in his control. Under this hostile environment, Job needed more than the intervention of mortal man. He needed God. But in the eyes of Job’s friends, this God appeared to have deserted him because of his sin. They could not perceive beyond the regular human model: ‘virtue ushers in prosperity’ and ‘hardship is evidence of God’s wrath against sin.’ The burden of sorrow Satan heaped upon Job was made heavier and unbearable by the unhelpful ‘consolation’ and conversation of his censorious friends and wife. If he had a friend who would not compound his woes with negative criticism that his sin had found him out and that God had given up on him, he might have had hope of deliverance from his affliction. Yet, in the midst of seeming woes, Job declares firmly in a latter chapter (Job 19:25) that “I know my redeemer liveth.” This is the Christian’s triumphant declaration. For he knows that no matter the extent the devil goes in scheming trials and temptations, his Lord and Saviour who has accomplished his salvation plan on the Cross at Calvary is close by. In times of crisis, do not allow the unwise comfort of friends, foes and spouses sway your conviction. Cleave to the Lord no matter how hard the times and circumstances around you. Christ is the best Friend and Comforter to lean on in times of difficulty. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Christians who trust in Christ can never be disappointed. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Don't forget to SHARE |
Daily Manna: Spreading the Good News "Friday 2, August 2013" *TEXT: 2 KINGS 5: 1-14* *"KEY VERSE: And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy. (2 Kings 5:3 )"* God once instructed the elders of the nation of Israel to relate the history of their relationship with Him to their little ones. "Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore upon Egypt, Upon Pharaoh and upon all his household before our eyes" (Deuteronomy 6:21,22). This was to be ingrained in them so they can also tell others. Naaman's recovery from the scourge of leprosy is a result of the simple testimony of a little girl. She had been taken captive by Syrian forces from the land of Israel. Held somewhat like a prisoner of war, she now waited on the wife of the Syrian general. Back in Israel, she had closely observed the mighty power of healing, signs and wonders which God deposited in his servant Elisha. Promptly, she witnessed to the unfailing power of God to her mistress. The military chief did and was healed. The miracle resulted from the simple action of a maid who spoke about the mighty works of God she witnessed back home in Israel. She told the story of God's love to the afflicted which led Naaman to eventually know the true God (2 Kings 5:18). Believers are challenged to follow the footsteps of the little girl by telling the world of the great and immeasurable wonders of the Cross and bring the tormented sinner to Jesus Christ for salvation, healing and delieverance. It is a sacred duty we cannot shun without attracting His frown. Yet, it is a timeless duty we must undertake for our greatest good in time and eternity. *THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The gospel without the preacher is like a ship without a rudder.* ****Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below. Daily Manna: Acceptable Service Thursday 1, August 2013 TEXT: SONG OF SOLOMON 8:8-14 KEY VERSE: Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. (Song of Solomon 8:11) The final verses of Song of Solomon explore the sublime themes of maturity for a growing woman with a great relationship ahead of her and the sacred responsibility of faithful stewardship. The long expected advent of our Lord Jesus Christ who brought a new type of love is foreshadowed here. Christ also taught his followers that they had a solemn duty to be faithful stewards. In his enlarged love Song of Solomon, we note that each time Solomon is with his beloved bride, they are accomplished as one entity. But the moment they are away from each other, they long for each other's presence. The relationship we enjoy with Christ through His redemptive work on the cross is unique and peculiar. But He warns us in John 15:5 that it is not a bond we can take for granted. It comes with a solemn responsibility of abiding in Him lest we perish. This responsibility is likened to the consecrated service of a loyal steward which our key verse reveals. It is similar to Christ's parable in Matthew 21:33-41, where a man let out his vineyard to husbandmen expecting them to tend it for profit. Unfortunately, they abused the privilege and were evicted. Saved from sin, we are expected to abide in selfless service in the Lord's vineyard, winning souls through evangelism and a personal lifestyle of holiness. This is the true mark of discipleship and evidence of our gratitude to our Saviour who accomplished our translation from death to life. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The truly consecrated life is the true test of a saint's gratitude to God. ***Share your thoughts and what you've just learnt in the comments section below.
