JAMB sensitises public on unified examination

By Kehinde Adio - 13.11.2009

STAFF of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAM), Oyo State zonal office, on Thursday, went round the city of Ibadan to sensitise the public to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a new tertiary examination system adopted by the board.

Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan, the zonal coordinator, Alhaji Atanda Lawal, said the day was set aside by the board to intimate the general public throughout the country with the new development in respect of the replacement of University Matriculation Examination (UME) and Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Matriculation Examination (PCE) with Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with effect from January.
According to him, the board would, henceforth, conduct one examination for the admission process into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and monotechnics in the country.

“In this new arrangement, candidate will fill only one form and indicate his choices of institutions in this regard. Each candidate is entitled to choose two universities, two polytechnics and two colleges of education of his choice,” he said.

Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr. Nuru Yakubu, has said there is no going back on the decision of the Federal Government to allow the nation's polytechnics award degrees in science and technology. Thus, the Bachelors of Technology Degrees from the Polytechnics is expected to possess all of the practical skills of the HND but with more in-depth theoretical underpinning knowledge of the field of study,Under the new dispensation, he said the National Diploma (ND) would be retained and all entrants to the B. Tech programme would be required to have a relevant ND in addition to five credits at the SSCE level. Besides, Yakubu disclosed that only the polytechnics with adequate availability of human and material resources, as well as experience in running an accredited HND programme would be given approval to commence the B. Tech programme by his Board.

Nigeria is said to be a leading nation in the consumption of the end products of other nations technological exertions. In fact, virtually everything except air is imported,
Nigeria needs skilled manual workers as never before. Some young Nigerians refuse to become bricklayers, Fiona Ledger a BBC reporter in Lagos saw it all, and he knew that communications, electricity and power are crying out for upgrading and better maintenance. But the idea of a vocational education is looked down upon by many young people
So they join in purchasing certificate called degree

Nigerian universities look fake. They have alot to cover, to produce quality B.Tech degree in Nigerian polytechnics we need non bias lecturers. So we have to produce our own type of lecturers.

You seem not to understand the problem of Nigeria HND. It is richer than any one obtain from any where in the world. It is of degree status. I am a PhD holder in engineering but I own HND before my masters degree. It is a crime for going through the polytechnic according to Federal ministry of Education even with Masters degree or PhD you are not a convoke Hnd holders in Nigeria suffer those things called discrimination why? This must stop this year in Nigeria. Nigeria is the only country awarding such HND in Africa.
