Rangers to earn points in Burundi by Humphrey Njoku 15 March 2013, 06:36 Enugu Rangers’ right-back, Ugonna Uzochukwu has assured Nigerians that his side will not return from the battle of Bujumbura, Burundi empty-handed. The Coal City side arrived Lagos aboard Arik Air on Thursday afternoon for the trip to the landlocked Central African state for the first round, first leg fixture of the Caf Champions League against the Burundian campaigners, Vital’O. The encounter on Sunday will hold at the 22,000-seat Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium in Bujumbura, Burundi. Uzochukwu said even though they are in the dark over the strength of their opponents they are positive of grabbing vital points at their backyard. “One thing I want to assure Nigerians is that we won’t come back home from Bujumbura empty-handed. “It could be an outright win or draw but the assurance is we must come back home with something no matter what the difficulties are over there in Bujumbura, Burundi. “We don’t know anything about our opponents, Vital’O but we’ve steeled and psyched ourselves to face them squarely. We’ll grab a result that we will make the second fixture a bit easier,” said the Super Eagles’ defender to supersport.com. Uzochukwu, who did not click to full potential against oriental foes, Enyimba in the opening match of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in Enugu last Saturday, promised to up his game against the Burundian side. “Expect the best from me against Vital’O. Usually first league game is difficult and against familiar foes like Enyimba you don’t expect it cheap. But it will be a different Uzochukwu against the Burundian side,” he assured. The second fixture is expected to hold at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu in a fortnight. Rangers walked over their preliminary round opponents, Sporting do Principe of Sao Tome & Principe in Enugu. http://www.supersport.com/football/nigeria/news/130315/Rangers_to_earn_points_in_Burundi

Nigerian quartet in continental mood by George Akpayen 15 March 2013, 17:17 Four Nigerian clubs will begin their quest for a place in the next round of the Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup this weekend. Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars will play hosts to last year's winners of the Confederation Cup, AC Leopards at the Sani Abacha Stadium from 3pm local time this Saturday. The trio of Mannir Ubale, Papa Idris and striker Gambo Mohammed joined up with the Kano club from the camp of the Nigerian national team but will continue to be without midfielder Gabriel Reuben. Enugu Rangers will make the trip to Burundi for the first leg of the first round in the Caf Champions League against Vital'O on Sunday. Former African Coach of the Year, Okey Emordi, has named a squad without Super Eagles' trio, Chigozie Agbim (not cleared), Chibuzor Okonkwo (not registered) and Sunday Mba, who is a player in dispute. But Emordi is confident of leaving the Prince Louis Rwagasore Stadium in Bujumbura with a result against the Burundian champions. "I have a squad capable of winning games. We have worked with players we have for this game rather than bother ourselves with those who are currently unavailable," said Emordi, who the Caf Champions League with Enyimba in 2004. In the first round of the Caf Confederation Cup, Heartland and Lobi Stars will play their opening legs at home this weekend against US Bitam and Liga Muculmana de Maputo (LDMM) respectively. Heartland and Lobi Stars were drawn bye in the preliminary round. At the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri this Sunday, Heartland face Gabon's US Bitam, who humiliated Desportivo de Guadalupe from Sao Tome and Principe 17-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round. Franck Corbin Guedegbe scored four goals for US Bitam at the Stade Augustin Monedan de Sibang in Libreville when they won 12-1 against Desportivo de Guadalupe in the second leg on March 2. Lobi Stars will make their fourth appearance in Caf competitions after three previous attempts in 2000 (in the Champions League) and in 2004 and 2006 (in the Confederation Cup). Ezekiel Bassey and Tony Okpotu will join up with Lobi Stars on Friday from the Super Eagles' camp in Abuja for the game against the Mozambicans in Bauchi on Sunday. “The match is slated for Sunday in Bauchi and we expect Bassey and Okpotu to join us from the Eagles camp. After the match, both players will return to the Super Eagles camp. We did our best to return to Africa and we're preparing well for Sunday's match,” Lobi Stars' technical adviser, Dominic Iorfa, told supersport.com this week. The second leg for the matches in the Caf Champions League and Confederation Cup will hold in a fortnight. gbokukueba: This is wickedness... Glo will not sponsor and would not allow anyone to sponsor. It will be a great idea if MTN comes on board...I don't think that's the case, i think it has more to do with the NPFL board than the sponsors. |
debosky: Both parties will simply need to adjust - if you are an 'everyday' man and your wife isn't or vice versa, then you will need to reach a compromise. Even though it's a hormonal thing, that's why we are supposed to exercise control. But he's got control, that's why he's only "doing" it with his wife and not going out to have it elsewhere na. isn't that controlling enough? ![]() |

thelastPope: This is where you got it wrong. Alams is the most generous governor the Niger Delta has ever had. His style of generosity was not acceptable to some of us. But make no mistake, he was very generous. He was corrupt, just like every other governor in that era. He wasn't more corrupt than Tinubu or any other governor then. He got into trouble because of his campaign for 50% derivation for Niger Delta. I was one of those who supported OBJ against him then. But the pointt is, OBJ singled him out because of that. I still support OBJ because I think he too should have been clean so he can really fight the cause. The other reason OBJ went against him was because OBJ felt, he was supporting the militants. But the truth was, he had to support the militants. They are his people. He is still highly respected amongst his people till date for his stance. What concerns generosity with stealing the state blind? whether he's not more corrupt than Tinubu is not my biz, if tinubu is corrupt, they should go get him same way the UK police got Alams. What is generosity again? you stole 100billion, share 100 million to few people, so we should clap for you? Generous to his gun boys.. no matter how you try to paint what is bad, it remains bad! |

www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiZUvDMdnik Picture this: A small Norwegian island dotted with pine trees, rocky coasts, rustic farms and private, wooden cottages. It sounds almost like the perfect romantic getaway. But the residents are actually inmates confined to what some are calling the "world's nicest prison." CNN has an excellent, in-depth look at Bastoy Prison, located on a one-square-mile island in southern Norway. It's unconventional to say the least; neither the prisoners nor the guards wear uniforms, and the inmates have keys to their own rooms. "It's still prison," said one inmate, "Luke," 23, who withheld his full name. "In your mind, you are locked (up)." Nonetheless, during the summer months, the island's 115 prisoners can sunbathe on the beachfront, go fishing, play tennis or take a relaxing sauna. And these aren't low-level offenders either; CNN reports that most of the inmates have been sentenced for serious crimes, including murder and rape. [Related: 'Predatory' prison phone rates] "If we have created a holiday camp for criminals here, so what?" said the prison's governor Arne Kvernvik Nilsen. "We should reduce the risk of reoffending, because if we don't, what's the point of punishment, except for leaning toward the primitive side of humanity?" And sure enough, Bastoy does have a lower level of recidivism (16 percent) than other prisons in the country, and much lower numbers than U.S. prisons. About 43 percent of former U.S. prison inmates reoffend within two years of being released, according to a recent study released by the Pew Center on the States. Some prisons in the U.S. take original approaches to their prison reform efforts as well. Earlier this month, we told you about a prison in Washington State that has begun pairing rescued shelter cats with some prisoners in order to give the prisoners a healthy sense of responsibility and reward for good behavior. All of the prisoners at Bastoy are also required to have jobs on the island and must use part of their monthly stipend to pay for their own meals. [Related: U.S. implements rules to prevent prison rape] Regardless of what you think about Norway's unique approach to prisoner reform, the entire article is worth a read, which includes some unexpected details on how easy it is for prisoners to escape from the island — and why almost none of them try it. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1384308/Norways-controversial-cushy-prison-experiment--catch-UK.html http://edition.cnn.com/2012/05/24/world/europe/norway-prison-bastoy-nicest http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/look-inside-world-nicest-prison-180524054.html |

Nigerians Abroad: Imoh Ezekiel scores in 12 seconds, Musa scores ninth league goal and Ikechukwu Uche gets a brace in the Segunda Mar 11, 2013 9:34:00 AM 1 Nigerian players were bang on target in various leagues at the weekend as the European season enters the home stretch ENGLAND It was both an FA Cup weekend and a Premiership weekend with Nigerians featuring in both competitions Victor Moses started for Chelsea in their FA Cup quarter final clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday while Mikel Obi started on the bench. Moses was replaced in the 52nd minute by Eden Hazard while Mikel came on for Frank Lampard. Chelsea clawed their way back from two goals down to end the match in a 2-2 draw and earn a replay at Stamford Bridge. Whoever wins the replay will confront Manchester City at Wembley. Moses had 80% pass accuracy from 25 balls and had two attempted shots on target as he also completed one sucessful dribble. In the 38 minutes played by Mikel, he had 89% pass accuracy from 42 touches on the ball and completed one dribble. In the other match on Sunday, Millwall drew 0-0 against Blackburn Rovers. Nigerian defender Danny Shittu captained the Millwall side and could have scored a stunner from 40 yards in the second half but the effort was tipped over the bar. Their replay is next Wednesday and the winner has a semi-final date with Wigan who beat Everton 3-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday. Victor Anichebe came on in the second half to replace Philip Neville in the 46th minute but his introduction could not pull the Toffees out of the hole that had been dug in the first half. In the Premiership, Reading fielded Hope Akpan from the start and the young Nigerian midfielder had a hand in Reading’s goal as his flick was diverted into the net in the 32nd minute by Nathan Baker. Akpan was replaced by Garath McCleary. Akpan had a pass accuracy of 70% from 27 touches on the ball and won 100% of his aerial duels. He also had one attempted shot before he was replaced. Peter Odemwingie replaced Romelu Lukaku in West Brom's 2-1 win over Swansea on Saturday. The win moved the Baggies to eighth position with 43 points. Odemwingie came on in the 81st minute and attempted a left footed shot on goal in the 86th minute but the effort went wide. Odemwingie has five goals from 21 league appearances. SPAIN Obafemi Martins was not named in the team for the match against Getafe on Sunday. The Nigerian striker, just recalled to the Super Eagles played in the Europa League match last Thursday against Rubin Kazan. Martins has scored seven goals in 21 appearances in the league and two in three Europa League matches. Nosa Igiebor is now back in Spain but played no part in Real Betis' 2-1 win over Osasuna on Friday. SEGUNDA Ikechukwu Uche put behind him the disappointment of not playing well at the Africa Cup of Nations and his being dropped from the Super Eagles to face Kenya by scoring the two goals that earned Villarreal a 2-1 victory over Sporting Gijon on Sunday. Uche scored in the 39th minute and got the winner three minutes into injury time. Uche has now scored eight goals in 21 league games FRANCE Montpellier lost on Sunday to Nice with John Utaka playing all 90 minutes of the encounter. Utaka has played 23 times in the league this season and had a chance to add to his five goals in the 10th minute but his right-footed shot from the left side of the box was blocked. He also tried to set up goals for his team mates in the 86th and 87th minutes but Younès Belhanda hit the bar with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box. A minute later, Souleymane Camara’s right-footed shot from the right side of the box went very close. Utaka completed 75% of his passes successfully from 46 touches of the ball and completed one dribble. Montpellier dropped down one place to seventh on the league table with 10 matches to go in the season. Onyekachi Apam was back on the bench for the visit of St. Etienne on Friday. The Nigerian defender came on as a substitute in last week’s encounter against Montpellier for Herita Ilunga and has played eight times in the league. UKRAINE Ahmed Musa continued his good form as he scored the second goal in CSKA Moscow’s 2-0 win over Krylya Sovetov on Saturday. Musa who plays centrally for his team scored the second on 72 minutes and it was a true poacher's goal as he collected the ball outside the box, shrugged off his marker and placed a low shot beyond the reach of the goalkeeper. That is Musa’s ninth league goal and it has helped CSKA to maintain a stranglehold on top spot as they are now five points clear of Anzhi Makhachkala, who lost away to Mordovia Saransk Obinna Nsofor started the second phase of the Russian league on the bench for Lokomotiv Moscow though he came on in the 79th minute to replace Maicon. Lokomotiv lost 1-0 away to their cross-town rivals, Dinamo Moscow on Saturday. Nsofor has played 18 times in the league with two goals - his last goal coming on November 24, 2012 against Krasnodar at home. Lokomotiv are in 10th place on the 16-team league table with 31 points from 20 matches. RUSSIA Taye Taiwo was missing for Dynamo Kiev but Lukman Haruna and Brown Ideye started and finished for Kiev in their 2-0 away win over Volyn on Sunday. Haruna assisted for the first Kiev goal on 50 minutes as his pass freed Andrei Yarmolenko to score. Kiev wrapped up the victory in the 70th minute with a goal from Daniel Garmash. Kiev though stay in fourth place with 41 points. Babatunde Michael celebrated his call up to the national team by starting on the bench for Kryvbas in their 3-0 home win over Zorya. Babatunde came off the bench in the 88th minute to replace Sergey Samodin, who scored two goals in the encounter. Lucky Idahor featured for Zorya and he was substituted in the 46th minute. Idahor has played 19 times this season and scored three goals. BELGIUM Imoh Ezekiel scored 12 seconds into their away encounter against OH Leuven on Saturday to make it 14 league goals for the season in 22 appearances. OH Leuven kicked off the match but the ball was nicked in midfield and passed to Ezekiel whose first time shot went beyond the goalkeeper to give the away side a fantastic start. Standard Liege went on to win 4-0. OH Leuven had Derick Ogbu in the starting line-up but he could do nothing to help his team. Ezekiel was replaced in the 46th minute by Ghanaian Daniel Opare. Standard have with the win qualified for the Champions play-off that will be decided by the six top teams who will now play a round-robin to determine who will be crowned champions of the league and the European places. Michael Uchebo started for Cercle Brugge in their 3-1 loss at home to Mons, who are coached by the legendary Belgian player Enzo Scifo. Uchebo has played 27 times with two goals. TURKEY Dropped Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo played the entire match for Fenerbahce in their 4-1 home win over Bursaspor on Sunday. Yobo also played last Thursday in their Europa League 1-0 away win over Viktoria Plzen. Fenerbahce are joint second on the table with Besiktas on 43 points, four off leaders, Galatasaray. Nduka Ozokwor and Raheem Lawal will hope to do all for Mersin İdmanyurdu on Monday as they confront Kalu Uche and Kasimpasa. Michael Eneramo played all 90 minutes in Sivasspor's 2-1 home win over Antalyaspor. The Nigerian striker has scored seven goals this term while Isaac Promise who played for Antalyaspor has also scored seven goals in 20 league appearances. Simon Zenke played his sixth game for İstanbul BB in their 0-0 draw with Kayserispor on Saturday. Zenke crossed over from the French Lique 1 to help Istanbul BB stave off relegation with his goals but he is yet to start scoring. In the first division, Chikeluba Ofoedu (pictured above) scored his sixth league goal but his club 1461 Trabzon fell 3-2 to Ankaragucu. 1461 Trabzon are fourth on the league table with 41 points as they chase automatic promotion to the Super Lig. PORTUGAL Elderson Echiejile played all 90 minutes for Sporting Braga as they won 2-0 at home against Maritimo. The Super Eagles left back has played for Braga 12 times this term with no goals though he scored four league goals last season. Braga are third on the table with 40 points from 22 matches and are chasing a Uefa Champions League qualifying spot. New Super Eagles call-up John Ogu started on Saturday for Academica against Sporting Lisbon and the teams settled for a 1-1 draw. Ogu was on for 89 minutes and was replaced by Afonso. The Nigerian midfielder was playing his 17th league game and he has not scored but has collected five yellow cards and a red card. http://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4093/nigeria/2013/03/11/3815305/nigerians-abroad-imoh-ezekiel-scores-in-12-seconds-musa?source=breakingnews&ICID=HP_BN_2?ICID=AR_TS_3 |
Mar 13, 2013 4:45:00 PM 2 The national team trainer has said that current form and not reputation will be the yard stick for picking his squad for the World Cup qualifier against Kenya Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi came out with a public declaration in Abuja on Wednesday that there is no room for complacency in his team and the players that won 2013 Africa Cup of Nations would need to be very consistent if they hope to continue to make the team for the 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers. Keshi, who hosted Abuja-based sports journalists to the usual midweek parley, disclosed that the rebuilding exercise will continue but in a modified manner. He revealed that very few but quality players that could add value to the team would be invited to try their luck in the team. He said that players like John Ogu and Michael Babatunde have exceptional skills and talents that he believed would be useful to his team, a reason why he extended invitations to the duo. The former Togo and Mali Coach also used the medium to reveal that he would continue to invite fresh but very few players into the team to make it a formidable and result oriented one. “We still have some players that we have pencilled down for the next matches and we are monitoring their progress and later they will be invited to the team. Some of them had played for the team in the past. At least you can see that some of my reliable players are not here,” said Keshi. “To start with my captain, Joseph Yobo is not here and that doesn’t mean that he is out of the team because he still retains his position as the captain of this team. Yes he has declared that he resigned from playing in the next Africa Cup of Nations but he’s still in my program for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. “Also injury cost Emmanuel Emenike from being here for the Kenya match. So we have our programs for the World Cup qualifiers,” he said. The former Togo and Mali Coach said he would continue to give opportunity to quality and talented players to prove themselves in the team in order to discover more talents for the Eagles. “That is why I said the rebuilding exercise still continues in a way even after winning the Nations Cup. If we didn’t give players like Sunday Mba, Godfrey Oboabona and the rest the chance to prove themselves in the team, they couldn’t have excelled at the last Afcon. “So what we are saying is that we are still going to look at a few players per time to see what they can do to make the team stronger and better than it is presently,” Keshi disclosed. http://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4093/nigeria/2013/03/13/3822084/keshi-talks-tough-says-no-automatic-shirts-for-afcon-eagles |
Keshi threatens to drop Sunday Mba if ownership controversy affects his form Mar 12, 2013 8:20:00 PM 5 The national team trainer has asked the clubs warring over the midfielder's signature to find common ground in order not to jeopardize the player’s future EXCLUSIVE Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has warned that he could drop midfielder Sunday Mba if the controversies surrounding his ownership rights eventually affect his form. Africa Cup of Nations hero Mba is torn between playing for Warri Wolves and Enugu Rangers, a situation which the Nigeria Football Federation is currently investigating. Both clubs claim that they have ownership rights to the player and have provided documents to back their claims. The NFF Executive Board set up a four-man committee led by its Director of Competitions Sanusi Mohammed and it has concluded investigations on the matter after quizzing the two clubs but waiting for the NFF president and its Board to ratify the decision on the issue. Mba has not played a competitive match since the end of the Afcon last month where he scored the winning goal against Burkina Faso in the final. Keshi who is not happy with the issue warned that he won’t parade a match rusty player in their 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifying match against Kenya, a reason why the controversy must be resolved on time for the player to concentrate on his football. “The two clubs should quickly resolve the issue and think about the boy’s career as very important and not to jeopardize it,” Keshi told Goal.com on Tuesday in Abuja. “Every local player, every Nigerian player is important for the national team. So if [Mba] is not playing I may decide to drop him. If he is not playing he may not be good for us in the team,” Keshi said. http://www.goal.com/en-ng/news/4093/nigeria/2013/03/12/3820076/keshi-threatens-to-drop-sunday-mba-if-ownership-controversy |
