In his dispenstion, his word was law and the country his fortress. The fear of general Matthew Aremu Okikiolaakan Olusegun Obasanji is the beginning of wisdom. He was a prestigious leader of Nigeria nay Africa.Abuja was mecca of all sorts to diplomats. He nipped any uprising against his government in the bud.No rebellion survived his shot because he dealt with them decisively. The odi and zaki biam bombardment showcased his might.Compare these to the ongoing Goodluck Jonathan administration and justify the achievement between the duo.The only opponent who survived his political shot is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Good post!Yoruba was belligerent in the past.In those days, victory is obligatory for any warrior or commit suicide after defeats.Yoruba have never been defeated in warfare. The dahomey defeated oyo during their independence conquest but meet their waterloo from the egba people. The fulani conquered ilorin as a result of afonja rebellion and betrayal but were also overpowered during ibadan/osogbo and fulani war.If the various tribes within the race come together to fight, the country will be in shackles unlike failed biafra.

Oyo celebrated oranmiyan festival many months ago despite ife disavowal because alaafin did not seek permission from ife which is not necessary since oyo never seek permissions according to history and oranmiyan himself was oyo empire builder.Any move by ife to organise another oranmiyan festival would be a slap to the alaafin institution and this is unacceptable. Also,it would be another sign of supremacy tussle between alaafin of oyo and ooni of ife

It is my impression that there are many school of thoughts in yoruba history by scholars but yoruba can never accept the falsification of her history however quack historians write up.Oduduwa was the son of lamurudu who was killed in mecca during islamic jihad. He had no choice than to live the city and wondered through egypt, gulf of aden and passed through sudan, chad, northern borno. He reached Bussa in niger and crossed the river niger until he finally get to an unhabited forest where he later called ile-ife (home of dwelling). Many followed him on the way and he had many wives and seven children who later established their own fortresses in various kingdoms such as alake of egba, alaketu of ketu, onisabe of sabe, onipopo of popo, owa obokun of ijesha, oranmiyan of oyo, orogun of ila and olowu of owu.Any other first class oba in yorubaland that is not mentioned was established by the oyo empire.Oranmiyan being the last born left ife and went to benin where he became the first oba but left in annoyance later due to some pronounced differences where he called ile ibinu(land of anger in yoruba).Thereafter, the name benin emerged after various mixing by itsekiris, urhobo and portuguese. He returned to ile-ife but decided leaving sooner to avenge his grandfather killing and revive yoruba ifa religion in mecca but he failed due to unclear ways to the destination and stopped at borgu where he meet some elders and they presented him a calabash and snake. The elders instructed him to hang the snake round his neck and followed the directions the snake points to and wherever it disappeared is the destination to carry out the revenge according to their beliefs.Oranmiyan did not hesitate to follow the instructions due to his focus on revenge mission but unfortunately, the snake disappeared at a place in woodland savannah where their is no evidence of islamic activities and finally gave up on his mission. He named the place oyo and automatically became the first alaafin of oyo,the largest empire in west africa stretching across woodland savannah of northern yorubaland towards dahomey, togo departments and enclaving them to the atlantic coast.Due to old age,he left oyo and went back to ile-ife after installing his first son ajaka as the second alaafin. In ife,the benin elders paid him a visit and pleaded for his return to become their king after the demise of his rival but he declined and told them to install his son owomika(eweka) as their next oba because he remembered he impregnated a benin woman erhimwinde on his way back to ile ife and that is how benin became yoruba ally.

More controversial versons added to yoruba history.Abewela, you said that odudwa meet ooni in ife and paid homage to him which is contrary to widely acclaim belief that oduduwa is the progenitor of yoruba race and the first ruler of ile ife.It is onile(lord of the house) not oonile which you claimed that the title ooni derived the name and that proves you wrong. You said that ooni ordered alaafin to establish aare ona kakanfo which is widely known that no oba dare order alaafin of oyo in yorubaland.Aare ona kakanfo was established by alaafin ajagbo to oversee yoruba land farther away after oyo returned from 80 years interrugnum exile in borgu due to nupe defeats which oyo revenge and gave them racial name tapa.Oyo empire was a sophisticated institution that oversee the entire yoruba and allies which constitutes the Alaafin seat, oyomesi headed by bashorun and ogboni led by oluwo society. The activities of the empire from early 1400s to late 19th century has never been disputed by historians and archaeologists due to orals powered by artefacts unlike the genesis of yoruba in ile ife.My stance on Alaafin of oyo position in yorubaland is still intact.Just google the empire to find more information.
CultureRe: Alaafin Of Oyo Or Sijuade Of Ife by honifome(m): 10:10pm On Jun 16, 2013
alaafin is an institution not just across oyo but the entire yoruba race and allies stretching across the woodland savannah in the northern yorubaland towards the defunct dahomey, togo departments and enclaving them towards the atlantic coast after military expeditions. The name oyo sounds fearsome in those days.Alaafin installed and confirmed obas appointment in yorubaland while they renewed their allegiance yearly during bere festival. Instructions from oyo is strictly adhere to and there is punishment for disobedience, tax evasion, undermining alaafin orders and oyo festivities etc such as dahomey expeditions, joint oyo-dahomey versus ashante military expeditions, eba odan (ibadan) invasion by alaafin sango after stripping off a masquerade which is a taboo in yorubaland.Ile Ife could be the cradle of yoruba but ooni is not among the seven (alake,alaketu,oranmiyan-oyo founder, onisabe, onipopo, owa obokun oba benin) children of okanbi, the only son of Oduduwa the yoruba progenitor. He is just entitled to take care of the palace as the slave head after the sevens have established their own fortress in various kingdoms. Therefore, the sevens are superior to ooni in kingship issues while the latter can claim religious and not political head in yorubaland since ile ife is a sacred place.

ALASE EKEJI ORISA(second in command to gods)
OBA TI N FOBA JE(the king that crown kings)
OBA TI N GBA IDOBALE OBA(the king that accepts kings salute).....this is just an extract from alaafin of oyo eulogies.
At the peak of oyo empire, yoruba glory was at its acme, oyo dominates political leadership of the entire yoruba kingdoms, our unity was like collection of brooms tied together to do the sweeping, the empire created strong defence tactics against the neigbouring enemies and were forced to pay tributes at oyos will in those days.Alaafin of oyo confirmed the appointments of prominent obas such as alake of egbaland, osile oke ona, olowu of owu, onisabe of sabe, alaketu of ketu, owa obokun of ijesha land etc before their independence conquests.Alaafin approved the establishment of other thrones such as awujale of ijebuland, soun of ogbomoso, olubadan of ibadan, timi of ede etc.
Oyo dynasty designed prominent military rulers for yoruba such as bashorun and aare ona kakanfo.Alaafin has the final say on disputes between obas and other other yoruba kingdoms.oyo conquest expanded yoruba land greatly at the peak of the empire.ile ife was recognise as cradle and sacred place for yoruba.Hence it's duty of oyo to protect ife from attack and no oba was recognized by alaafin but the chief priest called ooni.NOW DO YOU EXPECT ALAAFIN OF OYO TO ACCEPT SUPREMACY FROM OONI OF IFE?As far as I am concerned ALAAFIN IS AN INSTITUTION.Ooni is lucky that this generation is clearly different from the past otherwise alaafin would have dealt with him like kurumi of ijaye who attempted to undermine alaafin atiba succession decision. we were the architect of the empire and we buldozed it due to some so called liberation moves by our forefathers at the expense of our unity.we are now bearing the brunts of the fallen empire which was the second largest in africa after egyptian empire. We could have been a nation of our own at present had some mistakes been avoided because we are the most populous homogenous blac race in the world and we have thel resources. It' a pity that our present traditional rulers have not learned from the mistakes of our ancestors.YORUBA RONU!
