The Enugu State Governor, Sullivan
Chime on Tuesday said that he
never regretted the fact that
Nigerians particularly the people he
governs were kept in the dark
during his five-month absence
insisting that he owed nobody any
apology for keeping them guessing
throughout the period.
Mr Chime, who spoke to a select group
of journalists at the Governor’s Lodge,
Enugu said that he was hit by deadly
cancer of the nose which he had to treat
in a London hospital during his long
period of absence from office.
He described cancer as a deadly disease
and added that its cure was deadly too.
“Cancer is a deadly disease and the cure
is also deadly. The cure for cancer is not
Panadol. The cure for cancer is not these
drugs you buy off the counter. By the
time you go through Chemotherapy and
radiotherapy, you will be a changed
person.
“So I started treatment and the
treatment altogether lasted for twelve
weeks. Throughout the period of my
treatment, I was an outpatient. I was
never admitted in any hospital. All my
treatments, I took as an outpatient,” he
said.

Sullivan
Chime has
eventually
spoken
out on his long absence from his duty
post as the governor of Enugu State.
However, contrary to claims by his
media aides that he is hale and hearty,
Chime, who returned last Friday after
spending 140 days abroad said he used
his long vacation to attend to his
health.
The governor, while speaking with
journalists on Monday at the Enugu
Government House, said: “In August
last year, I was privileged to be one of
those nominated by the Nigeria
Governors’ Forum to go to Germany to
study their federalism, I was to
represent the south east zone; I had to
use the opportunity of the trip to pass
through London to do my medicals
since it was the only opportunity I had
to do that. After my medicals, I was
certified fit by the doctors, but I noticed
that I had a little growth beneath my
jaw. Ordinarily, nobody could see it but
I felt it seriously and asked the doctors
to further investigation on it.
“I left for Germany and had to still
return to London to keep the
appointment for proper screening of
the growth. It was after the screening
that it was discovered that the growth
in question was cancerous. It was also
discovered that the main tumour was
behind my nose; it was simply called
cancer of the nose.
“Cancer is such thing that when you
hear it, the person involved will even
declare himself dead instantly. I was
subjected to further scanning at the
nose and neck and was told that it
was curable, not manageable. When I
asked how to go about it, I was told it
has to be as early as possible before it
spreads to other areas. Accordingly I
arranged for it to be done. I had to
cancel further trips and agreed to be
back to London in two weeks. Within
the period, I came back to Nigeria and
made arrangement for transmission.
“I wrote a letter to the speaker,
informing him of my decision to
proceed on leave and sought his
cooperation to work with my deputy
who will act as governor. We even
held two executive council meetings
within the period where I informed
members of my exco that I was
proceeding on a long vacation.
“I left for Abuja the next day and
attended the Governors’ Forum
meeting and the next day I left for
London, settled in and saw the
oncologist the next day. By Monday, I
commenced treatment. Cancer is a
deadly disease and the cure is also
deadly. Its not like panadol, not drugs
we buy off the counter. You go
through different stages. The
treatment altogether lasted for 12
weeks and throughout the treatment, I
was an out-patient. I was never
admitted in any hospital in London.
During the period of the treatment, I
had challenges and these are
challenges I will not even wish my
enemy to go through; it’s not easy to
imagine.
“When I read in the papers that I had
died in India, it was a source of
entertainment; each time we wanted
to laugh, we looked for Nigeria papers
online but what became worrisome,
was the deliberate and sustained
attempt to undermine the government
of Enugu state. If you’ve been following
events, over the years, we’ve invested
a lot on infrastructure but I’ve always
said that one thing I would like to
leave behind is a workable system.
When we came in, there was no
system in place and I felt there was
indeed to build one in order to
encourage continuity. This was
therefore an opportunity to test the
system we had put in place. You must
have observed that we have
something resembling a system in
place now. While I was away, the
government kept on functioning,
everything kept on moving as if I was
around. Nobody talked about strike
over non-payment of salaries, no
contractor complained that he was not
paid. We even had increased activities
in my absence.
“I can beat my chest that the Deputy
Governor who led the team indeed
ensure that the system worked in my
absence. I’m happy we’ve almost
reached that height, it gladdened my
heart. Of course, we were in close
contact and we didn’t have problems
inspite of attempts by some of our
brothers and sisters who live in the
Diaspora to undermine the system and
were publishing all sorts of nonsense.
Our local media even joined in
spreading the falsehood but in a
nutshell, the Enugu state government
under my administration has come to
stay. The treatment ended on
December 14 and the period of recovery
commenced. “I was asked to stay away
from office for six months but by late
January when we went to review my
state, they were shocked with my
recovery rate which showed that the
tumour had gone. I was almost
declared cancer free. I will be required
to be going there from time to time,
but I can assure you that they
succeeded in curing the disease.
“I can tell you that I was officially
discharged that’s why I had to return.
I’m still in the process of recovery and
as such you don’t expect me to
running tomorrow but I’m free to
resume duties to ensure that activities
are running on full speed… Let me also
make it clear that when I was leaving
for London, I left a healthy man. I
voluntarily submitted myself to have
the tumour removed. To further
b*ttress this point, I left the shores of
this country without a single aide.
Most times, cancer kills because of late
discovery; it’s curable. Anybody that
discovers that he has cancer should go
and treat it and not allow the opinions
of people to dissuade him or her.
“The people that ought to know about
my predicament actually knew. Let me
make it clear to you that there is
hardly any public officer that travels
out on vacation only to go and rest.
Most of them go out to attend to
health challenges. I didn’t travel sick, it
was a tumour. I wasn’t grounded. I
decided to nip it in the bud. I actually
chose that period to do it because that
was the only window of opportunity
that I had. That was the first time I
was spending four months together
outside Enugu since maybe after the
war. It was never an emergency and
it can never be likened to that of
Yar’Adua. While Yar’Adua traveled
out sick, I traveled out a healthy man
and let me also tell you that the
attacks started about two weeks after
I left”.

Nations Cup title. Mba flicked the ball
over Mohamed Koffi of Burkina Faso
before volleying home five minutes

Before the crucial final, T.B. Joshua
said that though the match would be
tough, the Eagles would win – and
they indeed defeated Burkina Faso to
win the coveted trophy Sunday night

The suspect was a candidate in Kogi,
North Central Nigeria.
A former Kogi Central Senatorial
Candidate, Abdulazeez Bello, will soon be
arraigned by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC, on charges of
impersonation and forgery.
Mr. Bello, 49, was arrested recently by
operatives of the State Security Services,
SSS, at the Sheraton Hotels & Towers,
Lagos, for impersonating the Director of
Operations of the EFCC, Olaolu Adegbite.
He was at the hotel premises to further
an advance fee fraud agenda targeted at
Mercy Orji, wife of the Abia State
Governor, Theodore Orji.
He reportedly posed as the EFCC’s
Director of Operations with a fake
identity card bearing the name of Mr.
Adegbite.
Reports from the SSS indicated that Mr.
Bello was arrested on January 27 while
negotiating with some aides of his
would-be victim. He was later handed
over to the EFCC for prosecution.
At the EFCC’s office, the politician-turned
conman said that he was working with
a certain Nelson Ndukwe and Chuks
Offor, both aides of Mrs. Orji, to perfect
his nefarious agenda of swindling her.
He confessed that he impersonated the
EFCC’s Director of Operations.
“I’m sorry that I impersonated the
Operations Director of the EFCC. I did it
to be able to arrest Mrs. Orji’s assistants
who are said to be working for her to
launder money. It was my first time of
doing this. EFCC should help me out of
this”, he said.
Mr. Bello has reportedly made useful
statements to the EFCC and will be
charged to court soon.
The politician was the candidate of the
Action Congress of Nigeria for the Kogi
Central Senatorial District in the 2011
elections.

State, South Western Nigeria.
Justice Akintunde Boade of the Oyo
State High Court has declared his
intention to stay-off the graft charge
involving the former Oyo State
Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and two
others.
Also involved in the N11.5 billion fraud
case is Hosea Agboola, the incumbent
Deputy Senate Whip and former
Commissioner for Local Government and
Chieftaincy Matters under Mr. Akala;
and Femi Babalola, an Ibadan-based
businessman.
The accused persons were brought
before the court on an 11-count charge of
misappropriation, concealment of
information among others.
The judge, who, on Monday, declared
that he is due for retirement by the end
of February, said he would not be able to
continue with the hearing of the matter
as earlier scheduled.
He adjourned hearing till March 27.
An appeal
Meanwhile, the accused persons have
filed an appeal against the earlier ruling
of the court, which said they have a
case to answer.
The lead counsel to Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission, Godwin
Obla, had, on Monday, declared his
readiness to go on with the trial before
the judge announced his due retirement.
Ruling on an application seeking
dismissal of charges brought before him,
the judge, on the last adjournment date,
said the prosecution had availed the
court with enough evidence linking the
accused with the matter. He declared
that the accused have a case to answer.
The 11-count charge includes conspiracy,
illegal award of contracts, obtaining by
false presence, acquiring property with
money derived from illegal act, and
concealing the ownership of such
property.

approved a minor cabinet reshuffle in
the State Executive Council.
This development was communicated
in a release by the Commissioner for

The new changes include 1) The
former Commissioner for Planning and
Economic Development, Mr. Nick
Oparandudu, is now Commissioner for

Commissioner for Lands and Housing;
3. Barrrister Ugochi Nnana Okoro,
former Commissioner for Culture and
Tourism, is now the Commissioner for
Community Government;
4. The former Commissioner for
Information and Strategy, Mr Chinedu
Offor, is now the Commissioner for
Information, Culture and Tourism;
5.The former Commissioner for
Community Government ,Prof Chima
Iwuchukwu is now Commissioner for
Planning and Economic Development ;

Duties, Dr. Ifeanyi Nwachukwu, is now
Commissioner for Utilities, Public Safety

The report by some government
officials loyal to Governor Danbaba
Suntai of Taraba state who claimed to
have visited him in Germany recently
with the impression that the
Governor has been discharged from
the hospital in Germany and would
soon return to work has been put to a
lie.
The governor who was involved in a
plane crash last year near Yola
airport and was flown to Germany
for treatment was touted to have
been discharged from the hospital and
would soon return to work, but that
claim has been disputed by the state’s
Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar
who just returned from Germany
stressing that Suntai is no where
discharged from the hospital but still
receiving treatment in Germany.
The Taraba state acting Governor
specifically stated that Suntai who
still remains on hospital bed in
Germany can neither talk nor see.
According to him: “I went to Germany
to see my boss; the first day when I
went it was his time to take tea
because there in Germany the
weather was very cold, then I went
back to my hotel room. The next day I
went to the hospital when my boss
saw me he then smiled and waved at
me he did not speak with me and
there was no message from him to
the people of Taraba.”
While further denying some of the

Umar denied knowledge of the origin
of the photographs.

A Peoples Democratic Party Chieftain in Nsukka Local Government Council, Mr Ejike Onah, popularly called ‘Papa Nsukka’ was Monday killed by unknown assassins. He was inflicted with severe machete cuts on the neck.

Eyewitness account said “the yet to be identified group attacked him in his house Sunday night”. His wounds suggested a failed bid to behead the late politician.

Revealing what may have possibly led into the death of Onah, the eyewitness said:

“Before the death of Onah, a group of villagers had allegedly knocked down a house belonging to one Ndubisi Ugwu in a bid to eliminate him but he escaped death by the whiskers. His death is believed to be a reprisal attack.

Spokesman of Enugu State Police Command, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the death of the late politician but said no arrests have been made while investigation has commenced.

“Our major concern now is to conduct an autopsy but no arrest has been made”, Amarizu hinted.

He explained that as soon as the police received report of the incident on the fateful day, the DPO dispatched policemen to the scene and they helped to bring the deceased to the hospital.

Area commander, Nsukka Police Area Command, ACP, Ros-Amson Umar Halladu, described the killing as unfortunate. He urged the people to always dialogue on issues instead of violence, warning that the police would not tolerate use of violence to resolve dispute among the people.

Late Onah was in the past the labour Party flag bearer for the Enugu House of Assembly and Chairmanship aspirant. He will be remembered for his outspokenness.

control of the Adamawa State chapter
of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,
there are strong indications that
Governor Murtala Nyako has concluded
plans to dump the ruling party.
Nigerian Pilot checks reveal that he
has commenced secret talks with the
Congress for Progressive Change, CPC,
and Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
Nyako has been having running battles
with the PDP national chairman, Dr.
Bamanga Tukur since October last
year, following the sack of the
Adamawa PDP executive committee by
the party’s National Working
Committee, NWC.
Despite the intervention of the PDP
Governors’ Forum and a palace coup by
some members of the NWC, the
national leadership of PDP has
remained unwavering in its recognition
of the winners of the recent congresses
in Adamawa State.
It was gathered from very reliable
sources within the camp of Governor
Nyako that the embattled Governor is
making arrangements for ‘plan B’ as
the possibility of his anointed successor
getting the PDP governorship ticket is
getting very slim.
According to our source, the governor
has detailed his Chief of Staff,
Abdulrahman Abba, to commence
negotiations with the proponents of the
mega party who are leaders of CPC
and ACN.
“The Governor is already discussing
with those working to set up a mega
party. The Chief of Staff, Abdulrahman
Abubakar is the go-between for the
Governor and all things being equal,
our camp will join the mega party if
the merger plan succeeds.”
Responding to questions on the
possibility of members of the opposition

members of the committee initially got
to Yola, they were given cold reception
by the Governor who never bothered
about their welfare.

Caretaker Committee members, the
Governor was wasting money on
members of the National Working
Committee in Abuja with the hope they
could turn the table in his favour.
“He only remembered the Caretaker
Committee when it was already too
late and there was nothing they could
do to accommodate the Governor’s
interest during the conduct of the fresh
congresses”.

The ordinary citizen in Nigeria will
never see the Judiciary as the last
hope of the common man because
they feel oppressed by the rich due to
some ridiculous judgments that have
been delivered under our Criminal
Justice System. The Judiciary, when
not guilty of delay in delivering justice,
is guilty of bias or unfair judgment or
in most cases, guilty of both alas,
justice is delayed and equally be
denied.
Lately, the Nigeria Judicial System has
failed to deliver ‘appropriate’ judgment
to public office holders cum looters
who apparently derive joy in
embezzling our commonwealth. One of
such cases where justice have been
denied is that of James Onanefe Ibori,
the former Governor of Delta State,
who was inexplicably discharged and
acquitted on all charges brought
against him here in a Nigerian Court
but was rather effortlessly convicted
on virtually the same offences in far
away Britain after pleading guilty to
same. Before the Court ruling that
acquitted James Ibori, the Nigeria
Judiciary has delivered some abysmal
judgments on cases involving public
office holders who have looted the
treasury of this nation with impunity.
Tafa Balogun, the former Police I.G
was jailed for just 6 months for
stealing N7billion. Bode George equally
was jailed for 30 months for contract
fraud worth N100billion. Furthermore,
Cecilia Ibru the former M.D of the now
defunct Oceanic Bank was sentenced
to just 6 months in prison. The trend
of these rather abysmal judgments is
endless.
While I thought the Judgment
delivered by the London Southwark
Crown Court, which sentenced James
Ibori to a 13year jail term without an
option of fine, and still made him
forfeit all the properties he acquired
with the looted funds amounting to a
staggering £50million (N13billion) will
serve as a wakeup call to the Nigerian
Judges nay Courts, another regrettable
and rather unfortunate Judgment
was delivered again on Monday 28,
January 2013. An Abuja High Court
headed by Justice Abubakar Mahmud
Talba sentenced Mr. Yakubu Yusuf a
former boss of the Police Pensions
Board to a 2 years jail term with an
option of N750,000 for stealing
N23billion (an amount that is almost
double the James Ibori loot). What a
Judgment!!!
I did an analysis of the N23billion
stolen by Mr. Yusuf John Yakubu and
came to the conclusion that if he
chooses not to invest the stolen money
on any business whatsoever, it will
take him 63 years to exhaust that
N23billion, assuming he spends
N1million every day, but which insane
mind will spend such an amount of
money anyway except in Nigeria
where anything can happen. The
breakdown goes thus:
365 days = 1 year
Convert 63 years to days = 365 x 63
= 22,995 days
Now multiply 22,995 days x N1,
000,000 = 22,995,000,000 still left
with N5million naira for his burial
arrangement when he is finally gone
to hell am sure.
In other words, if Mr. Yusuf is so
prudent to want to spend N500, 000
daily from the N23billion he admitted
to stealing, it will take him 126 years
to exhaust the said sum. THAT IS
HOW HUGE N23BILLION IS!
Recently, Channels TV exposed the
rot in the Police College Ikeja. The
documentary did a good job by
exposing the humiliation a Nigerian
Police Cadet Officer goes through
during training. With that N23billion,
the Ministry of Police Affairs (I am
sure) will fix the dilapidated hostels
and lecture theatres coupled with
other facilities that are in bad shape
at the eyesore that is the Police College
Ikeja.
It is common knowledge how Officers
and Men of the Nigerian Police Force
suffer the hardship of proper
accommodation. It’s so bad that most
of them are often embarrassed by
street hoodlums who see them as
their enemy. The N23billion stolen by
Mr. Yusuf if invested in a housing
scheme by the Ministry of Police
Affairs will provide 8,000 units of
mini 2 bedroom flat for our Policemen
at the price N2.7million per unit as
informed by a local housing contractor.
This will provide good housing for our
Policemen and enable them give their
best in service as well as encourage
them to shy away from corruption
which has become a cankerworm in
the Force. THAT IS HOW
EFFECTIVE N23BILLION COULD BE!
It is also note worthy that the
N23billion embezzled by Mr. Yusuf is
over and above the 2013 budget
allocation to the Ministries of Mines
and Steal (N13billion), Environment
(N21billion) and a little below that of
the Ministry of Lands and Housing
(N24billion).
The Chinese government on Monday
28, January 2013, handed over to
Nigeria, a 150-bed hospital, fully
furnished with state of the art
equipment. The entire structure and
furniture cost $12.5million, about
1.9billion. The N23billion stolen by Mr.
Yusuf will build at least 12 well
equipped hospitals, the type that the
Chinese donated to Nigeria on Monday.
Imagine 12 well equipped hospitals
distributed in the six geopolitical zones.
Imagine the millions of lives the
hospital could save, the billion our
nation could save from overseas
medical tourism. Imagine! Imagine!!
Imagine!!!
As I conclude my writing on the
ridiculous judgment of justice Talba, I
saw a news that our judiciary did
another wonder in ikare, Ondo state
on 29 January, 2013. a day after the
famous justice Talba’s judgment. One
23years old Adepoju was sentenced to
3years without an option of fine for
stealing a N17, 000 worth of
blackberry handset! What kind of
justice system sentences petty
criminals to 3years and 2years in
prison for stealing a handset and
vegetable respectively, yet set free
another man whose crime has
resulted into countless death of
pensioners while waiting in queue to
collect their unavailable pension.
It is really disheartening that the said
N23billion stolen by Mr. Yusuf
Yakubu, was money meant for the
payment of retired Police Officers that
have served these country
meritoriously (albeit ostensibly) who
ought to be compensated but have
been allowed to die of hunger and
starvation because of one man’s greed
and insatiable thievery.
A couple of days after the debacle
that is the Justice Talba Judgment on
Mr. Yakubu, the EFCC were reported
to have re-arrested him for another
crime bothering on failure to declare
assets. This is a welcome development
as it will enable the Judiciary right it’s
wrong by handing down a
stiffer punishment on Mr. Yusuf for
his act which could not be
differentiated from that of Mr. James
Ibori who bagged 13 years in prison in
London.
He should equally be charged for
economic/financial terrorism (if there
is anything as such) as that singular
act have killed hundreds of retired
police officer and rendered others that
are still alive “living corpses”. This act,
in my view, is not different from that
of Henry Okah convicted in South
Africa for the October 1 , 2010
bombing which also left tens of
citizens dead and some wounded.
If our corrupt politicians and civil
servants under this government
thinks they can continue to

hand of the law shall catch up with

As Nigerians continue to celebrate
the victory of the Super Eagles over
the Ivorian national team otherwise,
known as the Elephant, Association
of Nigerian Prostitutes (ANP) has
said that their promise of one-week

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
has described the Super Eagles’
victory over the Elephants of Cote
D’ Ivoire as a good omen and a sign
that the nation will soon surmount
all its challenges under the present
dispensation.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary,
Olisa Metuh in a statement on Sunday
said the party was overjoyed that the
players did not let Nigerians down
adding that the victory was an
indication that Nigeria is already coming
out of the woods in all spheres of life.
The party said the victory over the
Elephants, who had in the past stopped
the Eagles in the tournament, was an
indication that nothing is impossible for
Nigeria and that the doors have been
opened for the nation to achieve other
goals.
“The victory of the Super Eagles is a
good omen. It is a sign of good things to
come. The PDP sees it as a sign of a new
beginning. It shows that we, as a nation
can surmount all our problems. It is an
indication that there is nothing
impossible and that collectively we will
overcome all the challenges we are
facing as a nation. We will surmount all
of them the way we surmounted the
Elephants”, he said.
Stating that the victory did not come to
it as a surprise, the party called on
Nigerians to always believe in the
potentials of the nation and urged
pessimists to turn a new leaf especially
as it has become clear that the country
has already started experiencing a new
dawn.
The PDP reminded that as a party that
has the interest of the nation at heart, it
had joined other well-meaning Nigerians
in praying for the Eagles. It said the
victory showed that God answers
prayers.
It however charged the team not to
relax at this moment but to increase
their zeal as they meet their next
opponent in the semi-final stage.
It told the players not to forget that
millions of Nigerians are now counting

Igbo extraction emerge in 2015, Igbo
leaders during the week in Enugu, met
to form of a new group, the South-East
Peoples Development Association
(SEPDA).
The event which had in attendance over
200 prominent Igbo sons and daughters
was held at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel
Enugu on Thursday.
Prominent South-East leaders who
attended the meeting include; a former
National Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Okwesilieze
Nwodo; Senators Ken Nnamani and Chris
Ngige; Mrs. M. Okadigbo, Nnamdi
Oriobuna, Julius Ucha, Sylvanus Ngele
and Anyim Ude.
Others include former Governor of
Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu; former Ebonyi
State Deputy Governor, Chigozie Ogbu;
Ben Obi, former Education Minister,
Chinyere Obaji, and former Deputy
Governor of Anambra State, Virgy
Etiaba.
Details as at press time was sketchy but
sources say Egwu was appointed
President of the association, while
Nnamani was appointed chairman of the
Board of Trustees (BOT).
This was in addition to several standing
committees that were also constituted.
While speaking, a source said: “South-

aimed at moving the Igbo beyond the
present level and ensuring that
everyone is carried along.”
Although the association assured that it
would not be in conflict with Ohanaeze
Ndigbo or any other organization
promoting the interest of the Igbo, an
Ohanaeze chieftain described the
meeting as a gathering of associates of
former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar
under the veil of promoting Igbo interest.
He said: “I was invited to that meeting
but when I made enquiries about those
who were championing the new group, I
discovered that they were all Atiku’s
loyalists. So they cannot be promoting
Igbo interest but that of Turaki
Adamawa.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has noted with serious concern the unrepentant and unremorseful conduct of the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in respect of the inflammatory and utterly disgraceful comment he made about the Christian faith and the person of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Inspite of our warning that he should stop such comments that carry chains of implications, El-Rufai has gone ahead to post another response which is insulting to the Christian faith.

Last Thursday, a day after our reaction to his damningly insulting comment, he retweeted as follows: “To those who see clearly, whose minds are not clouded by sheer religiosity, there is nothing insulting about the tweet”.

With this retweet, CAN believes that El-Rufai is set on a war path with the millions of Christians in Nigeria. We must state that unlike others, Christians do not shed blood, take life, kill or maim others at the slightest provocation. Nevertheless, we must warn El-Rufai not to take Christians for granted and to inform him that it is with great difficulty that we have had to restrain our youths from taking the law into their hands; which by extension means bringing El-Rufai to justice on account of his incitement and insult against the Christian faith. We may not be able to guarantee this restraint the next time he makes any other explosive statement that impugns on the Person of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He is, again, warned to desist from playing this dangerous and deadly game of Russian roulette.

The apex organization of South East
Igbos in Nigeria, the Ohaneze Ndigbo
appears stuck in neutral over
squabbles emanating from monies
collected by the President General of
Ohaneze Ndigbo from the President of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr.
Goodluck Ebelemi Jonathan as gifts for
the apex organization. This is as
executive members and stakeholders of
the Apex organization have charged
that the monies collected on their
behalf was collected without their
knowledge – and that the monies were
collected in exchange and/or in return
for the endorsement of the organization.
For this reason, the internal
administrative wheels of the Igbo Apex
organization fell into a cantankerous
quagmire.
Information available to

visits by the President General,
Ambassador Ralph Uwechue, to the
Presidential villa in Abuja to meet with
the President of Nigeria during the hay
days of the 2011 presidential elections.
As gathered, the election of
Ambassador Ralph Uwechue into the
seat of President General saw the
weighty influence of the then
substantive President of the federal
republic of the Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck
Jonathan into the affairs of the apex
organization – exerted towards electing
an Igbo person of Niger Delta
extraction. [Ambassador Ralph
Uwechue is from Delta State.] With
President Jonathan’s weighted
influence, Ambassador Ralph Uwechue,
who not a frontrunner, emerged the
President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
Uwechue’s ascension immediately
brought the expected desires of the
presidency to the forefront. The
President General began with frequent
visits to the Aso Villa quarters for
behind closed door meetings with the
President. One of the President men
who were present at one of the ‘behind
the closed door’ meetings – revealed to
the executive members of Ohaneze
that during one of the visit to the villa
– the Ohaneze Ndigbo was given
N250million on behalf of the apex
organization – in return for a blanket
endorsement of President Jonathan –
during the Peoples Democratic Party
[PDP] presidential primaries – a move
that was considered awkward because
the endorsement carried no significant
towards the PDP primaries.
The competent source within the
presidency pointed to the meeting held
at the palace of Asagba in Asaba in
Delta State on November 22, 2008 –
where the Anioma delegation were
instructed to hoist the person of
Uwechue to the seat of President
General. The source stated that the
choice of Uwechue was met with stiff
resistance by the stakeholders within
the Ohaneze because Uwechue was
reported to have never attended or
showed interest in Ohaneze activities.
Nonetheless, he was elected on
November 29, 2008 unopposed after the
two other candidates [Chief Dan Okenyi
and Dr. Joshua Enueme] withdrew
their candidacy on the eve of the
Election Day.
“Between November 29 2008 and
November 2012, Uwechue had audience
with President Jonathan 20 times” said
the source while confirming that
during the visits large sums of money
were handed to the President General
that sums to a little over N5billion. He
added that the President General
approached the Presidency about the
formation of Ohaneze Foundation –
which he made the presidency believe
was a venture under the auspices of
Ohaneze Ndigbo – and so – was given
significant financial support towards
the startup of the foundation. With the
formation of the foundation, the
President General launched a
transportation business – and
purchased a slew of mini buses to ply
the routes of Lagos to South East and
from Abuja to South East – and other
routes. However cursory investigation
revealed that the foundation was setup
as a private foundation belonging solely
to Ambassador Ralph Uwechue – and
not Ohaneze.
The proceeds of the transportation
business – called Aka Ikenga Transport
– are reported to go directly into
the private coffers of the Ohaneze top
boss under the said
foundation. Ohaneze, the apex
organization, according to the
information gathered, does not have
knowledge of the funds generated
through the transport outfit.
Other business endeavors engaged by
the Ohaneze top boss under the guise
of representing Ohaneze extended to
real estate investments – of which
the Union of Ohaneze were not aware
of – nor were they knowledgeable of
the funds generated from the business
outfits.
The recent election held in Enugu
where a new President General was
elected exposed the long hidden
administrative maladies plaguing the
apex organization. It was learnt that
Ohaneze finances were in the red
[empty] to the extent – Ohaneze as a
body was not financially able to
conduct the said election. It took the
intervention of the Governor of Abia
State, Chief Theodore A. Orji who
released the sum of N2million to the
organization.
Meanwhile, the revelation financial
mischief on the part of the former top
boss has since tossed the apex
organization into turmoil – threatening
to further sedation of the already
sedated union. Its executive members
have taken the matter to the courts
for redress – while some within the
stakeholder have called for the criminal
prosecution of the former top boss.
Efforts to reach the former Ohaneze
boss through his MTN line – failed – as
he refused to respond to our inquires.

The curtain of uncertainty surrounding
the resolution of the rift between
former President Olusegun Obasanjo and
President Goodluck Jonathan is
gradually being opened giving a vista of
hope for the resuscitation of the ruling
People’s Democratic party (PDP) and the
stability of the political landscape.
Only last week, for the umpteenth time
Obasanjo took on Jonathan’s presidency
on what he described as the latter’s
government inability to overcome the
security challenges posed by the
proliferation of violence orchestrated by
the activities of Islamic religious sect,
Jama’atul Ahlus Sunnah Lid Da’awati
Wal Jihad, otherwise known as Boko
Haram.
In an unexpected move Sunday
afternoon, Obasanjo, along with two of
his daughters, Femi Otedola, Chief
Executive Officer of African Petroleum
Plc and one other person whose identity
wasn’t ascertained, came to the
presidential villa where they attended a
prayer session with President Jonathan.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of mismanaging the security issues engulfing the country.

Obasanjo stated this in an exclusive interview published in the February issue of the pan-African magazine, New African. He blamed Jonathan for the deteriorating situation caused by the insurgent Boko Haram.

“If the President is the chief security officer of the country and there is a security problem, where do you go for the solution? And if that solution is not coming from the chief security officer, who else inside and outside will get a solution? He has the responsibility to solve the problem, and nobody else should be blamed but him.”

In a wide-ranging interview, the former General also challenged claims made by Nigerian literary giant, Chinua Achebe, regarding the country’s civil war in the 1960s. Obasanjo rebuffed claims that successive Nigerian administrations have marginalized the Igbo ethnic group within the country.

“Maybe he is making those remarks because he is not living in Nigeria. If he was living in Nigeria, when I was the president of this country, an Igbo lady was my Minister of Finance, and Igbo man was the Governor of the Central Bank; an Igbo man was one of the military service chiefs. The permanent representative to the UN was also an Igbo person. What more do you want? For someone to say the civil war has not ended, 40 years after its conclusion, that person is living in the past.”
