PRESS RELEASE AMOSUN CONDEMNS CUSTOMS INCESSANT KILLINGS, RECKLESSNESS The Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has condemned in strong terms the killing of two persons by men of the Nigeria Customs Service, today at Kobape in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the State, along the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway. It was reported that some officers of the Service, in a hot chase of a vehicle suspected to be carrying bags of rice along the expressway, shot at it, killing the driver and another person instantly. On seeing the consequence of their action, and in apparent fear of possible reprisal by symphatisers, they immediately abandoned the chase and fled the scene. It took the intervention of a delegation of the State Government and security agencies including the Army, Police, DSS, TRACE and others, that visited the scene on the instruction of the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, CON, FCA to douse the tension created by aggrieved motorists and residents who had blocked the expressway protesting the killing thereby making the road impassable for over three hours. While we do not support economic sabotage, we condemn the needless killing and will not tolerate recklessness and unprofessional conduct by officers of the Customs Service. You will recall that only two weeks ago, the State woke up to the unpleasant news of shops of rice broken into overnight by Customs officers in a market at Sango purportedly to recover “smuggled” bags of rice in questionable circumstances. While we have been trying to manage public perspective trailing that incident, this dastardly incident occurred again. We maintain that this bravado use of power hundreds of kilometres inland away from the international borders by Customs Officers cannot be justified by any logic. We are of the belief that if these officers had demonstrated this level of patriotic zeal in the discharge of their duties at the border posts and several custom checking points located along the roads leading from the borders, the public would have been saved these agonies and loss of lives. We hereby further appeal to the top echelon of the Customs Service to call their officers in the State to order and embrace proper decorum and civility in their operations so as to avoid acts capable of breaching public peace and putting Government in a bad light among the people. As a matter of urgency, we also demand a detailed and transparent investigation into the unprofessional conduct of the Customs Officers involved with a view to bringing them to book as a deterrent to others. In the mean time, we appeal to our people to remain calm as Government continues to engage every one concerned to prevent a reccurence. SIGNED Barr. Taiwo Adeoluwa Secretary to the State Government Wednesday, 8th March, 2017 |

Nigeria Police begin recruitment of 10,000 personnel Premium Times The Police Service Commission (PSC) has warned that there would be no short-cut into the Nigeria Police Force in the recruitment of 10,000 personnel. President Muhammadu Buhari had in 2015 approved the recruitment of 10,000 policemen at the National Security Summit in Abuja. In a statement Wednesday, Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission, told journalists that Mike Okiro, Chairman of the commission, gave the warning while unveiling a portal for the exercise in Abuja. The statement said that the portal would be opened to the public on April 1 to herald the commencement of the exercise. “The process leading to the recruitment of 10,000 Policemen as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari at the National Security Summit in Abuja last year, has commenced,” the statement said. It said the unveiling of the portal was in actualisation of the presidential directive on the recruitment of the 10,000 Policemen. The statement noted that the exercise was remarkable because there had not been recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force for more than five years. It said that thousands of policemen who died in the course of service, dismissed or retired, had not been replaced since the last five years. The statement stressed that the recruitment would strengthen and re-energise the force to tackle more security challenges facing the country. It explained that the exercise could not begin last year because the funding was not captured in the 2015 budget. The statement urged interested applicants to access the portal through the commission’s website: www.psc.gov.ng or that of the Nigeria Police Force: www.npf.gov.ng. It said that no fee would be charged for the processing of the forms which would be filled on-line. “We are not charging money. It is free, absolutely free,” it said. The statement said that the exercise would be in three entry points of Constable, Cadet Inspector and Cadet ASP, while there would also be recruitment into the Specialist cadre. It said that applicants for Police Constables are expected to possess five credits including Mathematics and English Language at Senior School Certificate Examination in not more than two sittings. It said that for Cadet Inspectors, in addition to having the requirements of Police Constables, candidates would be expected to have an Ordinary National Diploma (OND), Advanced Level (A level), National Certificate in Education (NCE) or their equivalents. The statement said Candidates for Cadet ASP must possess a University degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND).
