Russia’s ruling party, United Russia, said on Wednesday that a government commission had approved the first step towards nationalizing assets of foreign firms that leave the country in the wake of economic sanctions over Ukraine.

United Russia added in a statement on the Telegram messaging app that the commission on lawmaking activity had supported a bill allowing for firms more than 25% owned by foreigners from “unfriendly states” to be put into external administration.

“This will prevent bankruptcy and save jobs,” it said.

Corporate actions to censure Russia over its invasion of Ukraine vary widely, with some firms like US carmaker Ford temporarily shutting down factories but others like British energy company BP promising to exit the country.

United Russia said according to the proposed bill companies who had announced they were leaving Russia could refuse to go into administration if within five days they resumed activities or sold shares, providing that the business and employees remained.

Otherwise, a court would appoint a temporary administration for three months, after which the shares of the new organization would be put up for auction and the old one would be liquidated, it added.

The US has been funding research on laboratory pathogens and biological weapons in Ukraine since 2005.

Judging by the document signed by the US Department of Defense and the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, $ 15 million was allocated for research in the field of bioweapons in laboratories located in Kyiv, Lvov and Odessa.

The document states that the US government has provided materials and provided training to personnel for "collaborative biological research, detection and response to biological threat agents, and improving the protection of biological materials."

Earlier, the United States recognized the presence of its biological laboratories in Ukraine.

And the Russian Ministry of Defense published documents confirming that biological weapons components were being developed in Ukrainian laboratories located near Russian territory.

Nigerian student documents journey fleeing Ukraine

A student from Nigeria has recounted his four-day, 590-mile journey trying to escape war-torn Ukraine after he and hundreds of others were told they could not pass through the border by 'racist' guards.

Alexander Somto Orah, 25, spent four days trying to escape from Kyiv where he was studying at the Ukrainian capital's State University of Telecommunications.

The Nigerian student gathered his belongings and headed for the border a day after Russian forces invaded Ukraine.

But he and hundreds of other students were stopped from reaching the border of Poland by guards who said no to 'Indians, Africans and Middle Easterners', ordered to make their way to another border
