Fresh NEITI report says NNPC failed to remit $3.8bn, N358.3bn in 2013

A sum of $3.8billion and N358.3billion oil revenues that should have gone to Federation in 2013 was not remitted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its sub-units, the Nigeria Extractive Industries and Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has said in a latest report. The report, which covered activities of the oil and gas and mining sectors in 2013, was unveiled by the Chairman of NEITI, Kayode Fayemi on Monday in Abuja.

Aside the outstanding revenues from NNPC, Fayemi said, citing the report, that the sums of $5.966billion and N20.4billion revenues were denied the federation due to crude oil swaps and crude theft. Highlights of the report added that the sum of $599.8million was also lost as a result of under-payments of petroleum profit taxes and royalties by oil and gas companies.

The audit also revealed that the Nigeria Liquefied Natural gas (NLNG) paid the sum of $1.289 billion as dividends, interest and loan repayment for 2013. However, while NNPC acknowledged receipt of the amount, it did not remit the money to either the federal government or the Federation. The amount brings to a total of $12.9 billion the total NLNG payments received by NNPC between 2005 and 2013 but not remitted by NNPC to the federal government, the report showed.

NLNG is a joint venture project owned by four shareholders namely, the Federal Government of Nigeria, represented by the NNPC which has a 49 per cent stake, Shell Gas BV, SGBV, 25.6 per cent; Total LNG Nigeria Limited, 15 per cent; and Eni International (N.A,) N.V. S. A, 10.4 per cent.

Sexual Harassment: The National Assembly in Nigeria is not left out - Binta Masi Garba

A Bill which aims to commit randy lecturers at tertiary institutions to a minimum of five years in jail, scaled second reading Tuesday in the Senate. The Bill sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta-Central) and 57 others received overwhelming support especially from female senators who saw it as an opportunity to voice out the frustration and abuse of female students by their teachers. In his lead debate on the bill, Omo-Agege regretted that unlike universities abroad, tertiary institutions in the country were permissive of sexual harassment on campuses. He urged the Senate to accelerate the passage of the Bill into law in order to tackle the menace. Senators Theodore Orji, Biodun Olujimi, Stella Oduah, Binta Garba Masi and other senators who contributed to the Bill, sought stiffer penalties for errant teachers.

Updated May 24, 2016

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, says a non-contentious fund of about 230 million US dollars is being repatriated from Switzerland.

The Minister made the disclosure at a news conference to give a scorecard of the achievements of President Buhari’s administration in the last one year.

He said that monies stolen from the country were also in the process of being repatriated from the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Jersey Island off the coast of the United Kingdom, Lensisteine.

He said that the country was also in talks with countries in the gulf to recover stolen money from the country.

Mr Geoffrey Onyeama defended the many trips undertaken by President Muhammad Buhari. According to him, they were in the interest of the nation.

These returns, he said, were some of the benefits of the President’s interaction

with the international community since he took over the government in 2015.

He shed light on other areas of success which he attributed to the administration’s openness to working with other countries for the common good of everyone. These achievements include the recent victory against the Boko Haram insurgency.

The Minister said that he believes that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has started on a good footing and would ensure that by the end of its tenure, Nigeria is better for it.

EFCC opposes ex-PDP's spokesman, Metuh’s bid to travel to UK for treatment

A Federal High Court on Monday fixed May 25 for ruling on PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh’s request for his international passport to travel to United Kingdom for medical treatment. Metuh was arraigned by the EFCC on charges bordering on allegations of diverting N400 million funds meant for fighting insurgency in the North-East from the former National Security Adviser retired Col. Sambo Dasuki. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. Justice Okon Abang, adjourned ruling in the matter to enable him acquaint himself with the relevant sections of the law regarding the release of the applicant’s passport.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Metuh’s Counsel, Mr Onyeachi Ikpeazu (SAN), told the court that he filed a motion for the release of his client’s international passport. Ikpeazu argued that the applicant`s health conditions had deteriorated and need urgent medical care abroad. He, therefore, urged the court to exercise its jurisdiction and vary the bail condition by releasing the applicant`s passport. The defence lawyer also informed the court that he obtained a copy of medical report from the National Hospital, Abuja, which recommended the applicant to travel to London Hospital. Opposing the application, the EFCC counsel Mr Sylvanus Tahir, said that the defence must be specific in their application.

Tahir argued that the court must take cognizance of whether varying the order could not contravened the earlier order of the court which retained the applicant`s passport. He also said that the medical report tendered by the defence ought to be certified since it was a document coming from public institution. The EFCC counsel also argued that the document did not suggest that the ailment could not be treated in Nigeria. He, therefore, urged the court to refused the application, saying that there was no credible evidence to warrant the grant of the application. The judge however adjourned ruling in the application till May 25
