Nigeria's judicial system is so flawed, human right groups say, that police frequently take the law into their own hands, torturing and executing suspects without trial, particularly those suspected of armed robbery."People accused of heinous crimes like armed robbery, murder and rape can buy their freedom in court," Shehu Sani, Director of the Civil Rights Congress, a coalition of human rights groups in northern Nigeria. "This frustrates the police who re-arrest these people and kill them," he said."Others are killed because they might implicate some influential people while still others die as a result of torture to exert confessions," Sani added.

The accusations come on the heels of an 18 November statement by Human Rights Watch (HRW) which said that the Nigerian police may have killed more than 10,000 people since 2000.HRW called on the Nigerian government to launch an immediate inquiry into the killing in the last three months of 785 people suspected of armed robbery.Nigerian police spokesman in the capital Abuja, Haz Iwendi, told IRIN that it will take time for the police to respond properly to the accusations as they are so serious. "We will carefully study all the accusations and verify them and respond appropriately," he said.The civil rights group's Sani said he saw the police commit atrocities first-hand when he was jailed as a pro-democracy advocate under the military regime of Nigeria's former military dictator, Sani Abacha. "I was witness to situations where suspects were removed from cells and either tortured or simply executed," he said.He said little has changed for suspected criminals in the eight years since the country returned to civilian rule. "The police usually take suspects to the outskirts of town, shoot them and then tell the media that they were killed in battles with the police or while trying to escape."Sani partly blames local human rights groups for not properly monitoring the abuses. "They are not very interested in rights violations at the local level but in rights violations at the political and elitist level," Sani said.He also said the families of alleged armed robbers and rapists often have little sympathy, Sani said. "This gives the police a blank check to treat the suspects the way they do."HRW also called on Nigeria's police chief, Mike Okiro, to follow the lead of the Nigerian army who recently apologised for mass killings it committed in 2002 in Zaki Biam, in central Benue State.But human rights advocate Sani said that the army massacre was a one-off while police killings occur daily. "Tendering an apology will not change anything," he said. "The best remedy is to re-orient the police through vigorous human rights education."

"There is hardly a family here without a set of twins," said community leader Olayide Akinyemi, a 71-year-old father of 12, as he settled a dispute between two neighbours."My father had 10 sets, while I had three sets. But only one set, a male and a female, survived," he said.The town's high incidence of twins has baffled fertility experts,underscoring a more regional twin trend and an array of elaborate African rituals around them.The rate of identical twins is pretty steady throughout the world at about 0.5 percent of all births, according to a 1995 study by Belgian researcher Fernand Leroy, who has worked extensively on twins.But West Africa bucks that trend, particularly with a much higher incidence of fraternal, or non-identical twins than in Europe or Japan. That is especially true, experts say, amongst Nigeria's Yoruba community which is largely concentrated in the southwestern part of the country where Igbo-Ora is located.

Their birth is a good omen," he said. But while many African cultures see twins as blessed, they often believe twins also have divine powers and the ability to harm those who cause them displeasure. In pre-colonial times some communities used to kill twins and occasionally their mothers, believing a double birth was an evil portent and that the mother must have been with two men to bear two children at once. A Scottish missionary is credited with ending this practice. In Yorubaland and indeed in large swathes of sub-Saharan Africa, twins are also believed to possess one soul between them. This belief accounts for a whole series of distinctive, and in some cases macabre rituals that are often country specific. If one twin dies in a Yoruba family, the parents order a wooden figure called an "ibeji" to be carved, to take the place of the dead twin. The half soul of the deceased twin is thought to live on in the ibeji figure,which is clothed, "fed" and carried by a mother exactly in the same way as the living twin. When living twins reach maturity they take responsibility for the ibejis' care. Meanwhile, a twin who dies in Malawi is buried with a piece of clothing belonging to the surviving sibling. But when a twin dies in South Africa, the surviving twin is made to lie face down on his sibling's coffin the night before the burial, to mourn his death and say goodbye properly. Another variant has the surviving twin being made to lie face up in the freshly dug grave the day before his sibling is buried. If not, communities fear the surviving twin will pine so much for his dead sibling that he will also die. Amongst the Yoruba,one of Nigeria's dominant ethnic groups who are also present in Benin, Ghana and Togo,a mother who loses both twins will take part periodically in ritual ceremonies where she dances with both ibeji figures, either one in each hand, or both tucked into her shirt. Anthropologists say the elaborate rituals surrounding twins go back to the days when perinatal mortality was very high for twins;the increased chances of premature delivery compounding the problem of inadequate healthcare in traditional societies. The rituals were destined to help communities come to terms with the loss of the babies.

But sources within the service have told Nigerian reporters that they are investigating a wider web around the suspects already in their custody. Meanwhile, Ademole Adeyemo, political editor for This Day, who broke the story, says radical Islamists do not have many supporters in Nigeria.
Despite growing concern over possible threats by Al-Qaeda in Africa's most populated country, the Nigerian authority has to date not been able to provide substantial evidence to this effect. But religious tensions in the Muslim dominated north have fuelled these worries.
Thousands died when riots broke out in 2002 after 12 states in the north insisted on implementing a stricter version of Islamic Sharia law. But Adeyome says it is unlikely that groups linked to Al-Qaeda will win much ground in the country.
Political analysts in Nigeria say Islamic extremists do not have a large support base in the Muslim dominated north of the country. This follows the arrest in the north of Nigeria of several suspects believed to have ties with the Al-Qaeda network. The suspects are expected to appear in court this week.

Jesus Was Born In The Summer

Sadly, most modern day Christians think that Jesus was born on December 25, a date established by Pope Clement VII (1478-1534 A.D.), a Roman Emperor. He became Pope in November of 1523-1534. With that, it became believable that Jesus was born on December 25, a winter month. But the mere fact that the shepherds were outdoors in the fields tending their flocks, which they only did in the summer months, Jesus son of Mary was in fact, based on the scriptures of Luke 2:8 born in the summer. In Jerusalem during the month of December, it is very cold, and there is no way this child could be born in the cold.

During the high point of the summer solstice between June 23 through the highest point being June 26, when the sheep would be brazing in the field, is when Jesus son of Mary was born.

Luke 2:8 “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.”
Luke 2:12 “And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.”
Luke 2:15 “And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.”
So, this quote refers to Jesus as a babe and the Greek word being used here in the Bible is brephos for newborn or infant. So, as you just read, this proves that the baby Jesus was born during the summer, in the year 7 A.D. based on the death of Herod.
