A Russia expert has urged caution about reporting the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin as people have 'changed their name to his' to help him avoid being found.

Keir Giles, a Russia expert with international affairs think-tank Chatham House, urged caution about reports of Prigozhin's death.

He said: 'Multiple individuals have changed their name to Yevgeny Prigozhin, as part of his efforts to obfuscate his travels'.

No official confirmation on whether Prigozhin has died

As of yet there has been no official confirmation that Wagner chief Yevgeny died when a plane crashed north of Moscow.

However, Prigozhin was listed as a passenger on a private jet which crashed on Wednesday evening north of Moscow with no survivors, the Russian authorities said, raising fears among his allies that he had been killed.

There was no immediate official confirmation that Prigozhin, Russia's most powerful mercenary and a self-declared enemy of the Russian Defence Ministry, was physically on board.

Russian warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin presumed dead as plane plunges to ground before exploding

A plane linked to Russian warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin crashed landed tonight.

The plane was seen in a video falling out of the sky in the Bologovsky district in the Tver region.

The burning wreckage was seen in a field.

It was initially unknown if Wagner chief Prigozhin - known as Putin’s chef and with longstanding links to the Kremlin dictator - was on board.

A report from Rosaviatsiya - the Russian aviation agency - said Prigozhin was among the passengers.

Reports said seven were on board the Embraer Legacy 600 business jet.

At least three died but four could not be located.

A later report citing the Russian Emergencies Ministry said ten had been killed.

A loud bang was reported by people on the ground.

Prigozhin, 62, had led a coup against Putin’s regime exactly two months ago.

He had been warned that his life was in danger.

A channel linked to Wagner said the plane had been shot down by air defences.

There was no confirmation.

Sources close to him said that while the aircraft belonged to him, he usually flew on another aircraft.

He was known to take huge care over his security.

Earlier this week a video apparently showed him in Africa vowing to make Russian great by deploying his Wagner troops on the continent.

Former Russian presidential candidate Ksenia Sobchak said: “My sources report that an Embraer plane belonging to Yevgeny Prigozhin has now crashed in the Tver region.

“This happened 15 kilometres from Khotilovo.

“According to our information, there were three crew members and seven passengers.

“Whether Prigozhin himself was on board is unknown.”

Sobchak is known as Putin’s “goddaughter”.

A local woman said parts of the plane fell off as it plunged from the sky.

Progozhin had been warned not to go into high buildings for fear of accidents after leading a coup aimed at ousting especially defence minister Sergei Shoigu and army chief Gen Valery Gerasimov.

He is known to have used body doubles as part of his elaborate security measures.

Algeria refuses French request to fly over its airspace for military operation in Niger

Algeria has refused a French request to fly over its airspace for a military operation in Niger, state radio said late on Monday, after a July 26 coup in the West African nation that lies south of the Algerian border. Algeria opposes any foreign military action in Niger and favors diplomacy to restore constitutional order, state radio said. France has about 1,500 troops in Niger that were stationed there before last month’s coup. It is not clear what military operation Algeria was referring to, but France has not said it would intervene militarily to overturn the military takeover.

West Africa’s main regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said last week said it had agreed an undisclosed “D-Day” for a possible military intervention if diplomatic efforts fail — an escalation that could further destabilize a conflict-torn and impoverished region.

On Tuesday, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council said in a communique that Niger had been immediately suspended from all African Union activities. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune voiced Algerian fears about an armed response early this month, saying “a military intervention could ignite the whole Sahel region and Algeria will not use force with its neighbors.” The North African country worries about repercussions such as an influx of migrants into its territory, a government source familiar with the situation told Reuters.
“We are against the coup but we are against a military action that would worsen the situation in Niger and beyond in the Sahel,” the source who asked not to be named told Reuters.

French authorities did not immediately reply to a request for comment. France’s military presence in West Africa has become increasingly tenuous amid a wave of coups in the Sahel region since 2020. Its forces have been kicked out of Mali and Burkina Faso and anti-French sentiment has grown on the streets of Niger’s capital Niamey since the July 26 coup. Meanwhile, Russian influence in the region has grown.
Algeria has had difficult relations with France, its former colonial ruler, sparring over Sahel security and other regional issues, disputes over their shared history, French media coverage of Algeria and human rights issues.

Yes, you are correct, and they are not aware that the sanctions affect also many Nigerians refugees who live in Niger.
Niger is hosting more than 300,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Nigeria, mainly because of the insurgency in
Northern Nigeria by the Boko Haram.

Yes, the African Union has suspended Burkina Faso and Mali from all its activities in response to military coups but they
never relinquished power because they don't need the useless AU

Guinea, Mali, Burkina and Niger do not have the capacity to absorbed the sanctions and bogged the situation into Isolationism, these countres do not produce most of their goods and rely heavily on importantions, and with the sanctions imposed on them how would they cope?

It should be noted that these three countries are plagued with internal hostilities, couple with external aggressions which would come with heavy blockade, and the sanctions how would they survive? After Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso would be next and that is while the are forming alliance.

They still survive despite sanctions. You simply wish that they don't survive.
