Ekong: Playing in the Super Eagles has changed my life
thenff.com caught up with Super Eagles Troost Ekong

In this exclusive interview, the rock-solid defender said he was excited about Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year, the upcoming dead rubber against Algeria, and the top –notch friendly against Argentina in Krasnodar, Russia. Excerpts:

Thenff.com : With the World Cup qualification sealed, how have you been feeling with the upward trajectory of your football career, and what feeling has the qualification created in you?
Ekong : It is a big achievement for Nigeria and for me to qualify for the World Cup. It has encouraged me to continue to step up my game in preparation for the World Cup, and of course, at the tournament itself.
Thenff.com : Now, we play Algeria in the last game of the qualifiers. How should we approach the game?
Ekong : We should aim to finish our World Cup qualifying campaign unbeaten and again use this as a game to improve as a team.
Thenff.com : Preparations have kicked off in earnest with Argentina being the first test. Are you any wary about playing against some of the best ball magicians in the world, and what do you think about the game for the Super Eagles?
Ekong : No, I am excited. To be competing against the very best in the world and probably my generation, is something to look forward to. But that level of respect is where the Super Eagles should be too, so this is a chance for us to test ourselves.
Thenff.com : Can you say playing for the Super Eagles and against African opposition, coupled with working with the kind of players in the Coach Rohr-tutored side has toughened you up, and are you also flexible and more experienced to pair up with anyone in defence apart from your main partner Leon Balogun?
Ekong : The experience garnered playing for the Super Eagles has been life –changing for me. Facing some of the best forwards in Africa, whilst having to perform and deliver for such a football-loving nation like Nigeria is a pressure that improves you as a player. I enjoy being with the team, and working with quality players. Playing alongside someone like Leon Balogun with his quality has definitely helped, but I would feel just as comfortable playing next to anyone now.
Thenff.com : What teams do you hope for as we look forward to the World Cup Draw on Dec 1? Do you think there are teams we should avoid and can you tell us the ones you want us to avoid?
Ekong : I am not scared to play against any team. But of course, we hope for a favourable draw. We have to believe in ourselves just like we did in the qualifying campaign. Many doubted us winning a group with Cameroon and Algeria, and look where that got us!
Thenff.com : The World Cup is the biggest football tournament in the universe. Has playing at the Rio Olympics (and as the only player who played every minute) spurred you for the challenge to make the final squad for the World Cup and eventually play in it?
Ekong : Yeah, that was an unforgettable experience. I am very happy with our ticket for the FIFA World Cup but now I am focused on performing for Bursaspor in the next 7 months, together with the Super Eagles’ friendlies in order to be fit and ready next summer. I want to be on that plane to Russia and make Nigeria proud again like we did in Brazil last year.
Thenff.com : Finally, realistically, which stage do you think Nigeria can get to at the FIFA World Cup in Russia?
Ekong : I think we have a very hungry and exciting squad now and realistically, we should be aiming for the knockout stages and just take it game by game.

Rohr Drops Big Hint Aina & Iwobi Will Start Vs Algeria: How Team A & B Lined Up

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has dropped a big hint about the eleven players that will start in the national team's final 2018 World Cup qualifier against Algeria on Friday, November 10.
Based on the team's workout on Wednesday evening, the only thing that didn't add up was his decision to include Tianjin Teda midfielder John Obi Mikel in the Team B, otherwise he gave a clue as to his probable first-choice to start against the Desert Foxes.
After an initial physical session of stretching and running, Rohr organized a mini-game between Team A and Team B.
By all indications, Chelsea defender Ola Aina is poised to make his full debut for the Super Eagles as he was in Team A, along with Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi.
Young Deportivo La Coruna goalkeeper Francis Uzoho is expected to be named on the substitutes bench against the Desert Foxes, having featured for the Team B.
The formation used in training today is not cast in stone, everything will become clearer when the team have their final workout on Thursday, November 9.
Team A : Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Ola Aina, Abdullahi Shehu, Leon Balogun, Troost-Ekong, John Ogu, Wilfred Ndidi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Tony Nwakaeme, Alex Iwobi
Team B : Team B: Francis Uzoho (Daniel Akpeyi), Uche Agbo, Tyronne Ebuehi, Chidozie Awaziem, Kenneth Omeruo, Obi Mikel, Chidiebere Nwakali, Ahmed Musa, Henry Onyekuru, Olarenwaju Kayode

I really find it hard to believe Amaju would say that in the public arena as part of his explanations of the Tega Abrahams debacle.

Iwobi was never in the running to go anywhere with England, that's simply not true. Iwobi was already in the SE before he had played one game for the Arsenal first team.

It's a fiasco and damning endictment of the incompetence of the highly esteemed but faceless scouting crew of the NFF. If they had done thier homework they should have been able to project and assess that Tega will blow. Quite obviously they didn't.
As a result a call up that should have been made last season is being made now.

Just like Onomah who I rate highly as midfielder in multiple roles, his end product delivery is outstanding very disciplined and a true team player. Very skillfull but doesn't get carried away playing to the gallery.

I expect to see him in the EPL if not for Tottenham another Top team. That could come around as early as January. We should be engaging him now not waiting for him to blow.

And all this talk about begging is nonsensical in the extreme. Players don't come to you, the NFF goes to them. Our engagement strategy is essentially a joke that's at the core of the matter.
even you...you started rate Tammy highly after his exploits in the epl this season...
I remember often a time I ask and talked to you about him here...you always express your reservations probably because you wanna promote your player....Fred onyedimma at millwals....

let me blow your mind a little....do you know that pinnick have been on Tammy Abraham case right from when he was in Chelsea under 19....
from wat I know...he was ready to throw him into the ring just like the case of iwobi....but...his dad and the lad kept sayinh his focus for now....is to keep up wit his development and progress rheough the English yoith systems......

so I wont blame pinnick in this case...mind you iwobi games for the super eagles prior becominh a full fledge member for arsenal first team...were only friendlies I think against Congo or so in Brussels...

while on his arrival prior the Egyptian game in kaduna...Roy hodgson was still trying to stop him and get him into the under 21 set up by sending mails...but right there at the airport his mind was made up...
I bet you someone like Tammy would have a rethink....

but to him....his mind was made up....against Egypt that was his competitive match....
so before then he was already playing first team football for arsenal...

so cut pinnick some slack in a bid to defend some of your English overhyped average players.....

Obi Mikel Finally Opens Up On Transfer War Between Chelsea, Man Utd For His Services

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has finally lifted the lid on the transfer war between Chelsea and Manchester United for his services more than a decade ago.
Mikel initially signed for the Red Devils on April 29, 2005, but the midfielder eventually joined Chelsea a year later after they paid £16 million to the Old Trafford outfit and Lyn Olso.
The other actors involved in the case were Lyn director Morgan Andersen, agents Rune Hauge, John Shittu, Daniel Fletcher and Jerome Anderson, managers Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho and Mikel's father, who wanted his son to join United ahead of Chelsea until he was approached by Shittu.
Mikel told The Sun : ''It was surreal, I was at school, but had Chelsea and Manchester United — two of the world’s biggest clubs — trying to sign me. I’ll never forget that second meeting with Sir Alex. I’d signed a deal at United but had to tell him: ‘Sorry, I want to play for Chelsea’.
''He really liked me but I could see how angry and disappointed he was.
''Some things he told me made me think about changing my mind but I was thinking about Jose, too.
''I had these two great managers wanting me and I did not know what to do.
''Fergie told me: ‘Why would you turn down United? It’s the biggest club in the world. You cannot do that. You have to say Yes’.
''As a footballer, you have to make decisions that you live with for the rest of your life.''
Mikel was successful at Chelsea, winning the Champions League and Europa League, two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups in his 11 years there.

I drop this for my brother Goodjoe...I sure know henceforth uzoho becomes his favorite courtsey of his exploits during drills....

Eagles Training: Deportivo La Coruna Goalkeeper Uzoho Impresses In Shooting Drills

As part of our build up to the dead rubber World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie between Nigeria and Algeria, Owngoalnigeria.com contact in Morocco witnessed the Eagles training session.
The goalkeepers of the team had a shooting session which was handled by the goalkeeper trainers Alloy Agu and Enrico Pionetti, with goalkeeper Francis Odinaka Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa taking part.
During the drills newly invited Deportivo La Coruna shot stopper Uzoho impressed with his long reach especially in diving to make saves, as his impressive height ensure he hardly misses when he dives.
Standing at an impressive height of over six feet tall, Uzoho wasn’t as assured in terms of grip like Ikechukwu Ezenwa who is the number one goalkeeper of the team.
However, Uzoho put up a good performance in training during the morning session, and he will be hoping for more of the same in the second session which will take place later this evening.

Goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has joined up with the rest of the team, hence they will be three goalkeepers in the team for the session which will focus more on tactical issues ahead of Friday’s game.

Dutch-Nigerian Ebuehi, Etebo, Ogu Among Top Performers In Super Eagles Training

ADO Den Haag Dutch-Nigerian defender Tyronne Ebuehi has been very impressive in training for the Super Eagles ahead of their Friday game against Algeria.
Ebuehi is yet to make his competitive debut for Nigeria since agreeing to pursue a career with Nigeria at international level ahead of the Netherlands,
It is looking very likely that the 20 year old will finally get his chance against Algeria on Friday as his all round performance has caught the eyes, particularly his pace and ability to whip in crosses.
Hapoel Be’er Sheva central midfielder John Ogu has also been very impressive in training especially during yesterday’s session with his abilities in aerial duels the catch of his performance.
The injury to Mikel Agu has opened up a window for him to play his first competitive game under Rohr, who has also hinted that he will give players who have been a part of the team during qualifiers the chance to play against Algeria

CD Feirense midfielder Ogehenekaro Etebo is another player who is fighting to regain his starting spot in the team after failing to impress in the 0-2 loss to South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers.
Since that game he has not been used by Rohr in any competitive game, but his strong showing in training will no doubt make the coach consider him among the six changes he said he will likely make to his starting line up on Friday.

Captain John Obi Mikel Shows Class In First Training Session With Super Eagles

The captain of the senior national team of Nigeria John Obi Mikel showed his class in his first training session with the Super Eagles ahead of their game against Algeria.
Nigeria will take on Algeria in a dead rubber World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie, and Mikel who will most likely start as captain on Friday started his build up with the team this evening.
As exclusively reported by Owngoalnigeria.com, the captain arrived the camp of the team this morning after their morning session, and only had his first training in their second session of the day.
He was very lively, fit and commanding in the middle when the players engaged themselves in a practice game which brought the session to an end.
His range of passes and ball holding abilities left his markers chasing shadows, and from all indications he looks likely to pair Wilfred Ndidi and Ogehenekaro Etebo in the midfield against Algeria on Friday.

Iwobi : I Almost Cried When I Scored The Winning Goal Against Zambia

Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi has admitted that he almost wept when he scored one of the most important goals of his young career in a World Cup qualifier against Zambia on October 7.
It took only seven minutes for the Hale End Academy graduate to make his mark after coming off the bench, as he swept the ball past Chipolopolo goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene after he was teed up by Abdullahi Shehu.
''It’s so hard to describe, you know what I mean. When I actually scored the moment was crazy, I remember running off celebrating,'' Iwobi told arsenal.com.
''I almost cried, I actually almost cried to see how the fans were reacting, to see my mum and dad in the stands, it was just an amazing feeling. ''
The Gunners number seventeen added : ''When I scored the goal, because the security are very strict the fans were trying to come on the pitch as I scored, but the security guards stopped them and after the fans they played trumpets and banged drums, so the players were just dancing, it was just crazy.''
Iwobi will make his thirteenth appearance for the Super Eagles if he features against Algeria on Friday, November 10.

Rohr – I Will Introduce Six New Players In The Starting Line Up Against Algeria

Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has revealed that he could introduce as many as six new players in his starting line up when they take on Algeria on Friday.
Nigeria are up against Algeria in a dead rubber World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie on Friday, and according to Rohr he would use the game to test some fringe players in his team.
” All the games are important, it’s right we have already qualified for the World Cup, so the result is not the most important, the most important in this game will be to play a good game”, Rohr said in an interview posted on the official twitter handle of the Super Eagles.
” We always play to make good games and good results , but it’s an opportunity for us to see some players who didn’t play so much during the qualifiers because we have our team, and now we have six injuries, so it will be at least six changes”.

Algeria Coach Madjer Blast – Nigerian Team Is Full Of Bench Warmers Bar Arsenal Iwobi

Newly appointed coach of Algeria national team Rabah Madjer has hit out at the Nigerian team who his team will be facing on Friday in a dead rubber World Cup 2018 Qualifiers tie.
Speaking to the press in Algeria, Madjer who was not in charge of the team when they suffered a 3-1 loss to Nigeria in the reverse tie played in Uyo said the Nigerian team has many players who don’t get to play for their European clubs..
” I have studied the Nigerian team, apart from Iwobi, every other player is mostly a substitute for their team in Europe , but that doesn’t mean they will not be at the level to face us”, Madjer said.
” The game against Nigeria is not a friendly match for me, to me it’s the first game of the qualifiers for the 2018 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon”.

lol, the way they were saying Tammy was getting insults on Twitter, I thought he would even be trending

Imagine my disappointment when I checked for top trends and there was not even a sniff of Tammy on the top 20.

A lot of people in and outside Nigeria seem to not understand how Nigerians work.....so let me explain:

1. We only drag you if you insult us as a people or a nation.

2. Nigerians do not drag things for days. They can dedicate a maximum of fifteen hours of their day to you, but after that, you will only be mentioned IN PASSING.

3. Spending more than a day on anyone is not possible... There are lots of people to be dragged in this world, we cannot waste our time on one soul.

So, these stories of Tammy getting dragged is just that- a story. One or two people on Twitter going at the guy doesn't mean the entirety of the country is concerned about him.

Most people have moved on, Bobrisky was the top trend today, Tammy is not relevant to the Nigerian tweetosphere....Nairaland is obviously the only place he is still getting undeserved airtime and who do we blame for that? undecided
for somedays now...I have not been feeling too strong...I was really not happy reading this claimed insults on Tammy...

When Tammy first said he was still available for England. There were no insults abi?
Did he insult us then? Talk true!
please bro...let's leave this Tammy issue please..I really don't want it to cause misunderstanding between us...

all since I have been following football..I have never seen a player Nigerians so much craved for and loved the way they go about this Tammy....
the news of his possible switch brought joy to many football loving nigerians....

I remember a man United fan I once meet sometime ago could not hide his excitement....this is someone who barely watch the super eagles play....
he was so excited and was blessing pinnick...

he was someone that I tell you....pinnick don't mind snick into the 24 man squad for the world cup....

the measures adopted for his switch I doubt if it has been employed for other players.....
mind you...pinnick has been on his case right from his under 19 days in Chelsea academy...

pinnick was ready to throw him.in the ring...had it been him and his dad gave him their words...

they kept telling pinnick...that he wanna progress through the English youth system first....that's their focus for now....

same style llorfa and his son used....hoping that llorfa junior will get into the 3 lions squad...now that it is becoming impossible...he now wants his son to play for nigeria....

it really pained many Nigerians...and you don't expect them to take it lightly wit him..especially that red carpet statement....the lad messed up wit those words...

I tell you many Nigerians just love this boy...
that's why they're reactin the way they're doing.....
I believe with time...they will forget and let him be.....

most Nigerians only made reference to the likes of agbonlahor and co...and how they were treated...some say he will likely get few caps like 5 or so...
that's all I could read...though there were few insults...

even the English peeps are not free from same immaturity....

everyone has a different perception on this Tammy scenario and as such are going to interprete it differently....

to some....Tammy used the super eagles to draw up Southgate attention...

to others he was grossly pressured by the English press....

on another pole...pinnick messed everything up...bla bla...

so stop trying to rubbish Nigerians...here go to Twitter and show your prowess...stall those you think are insulting Tammy and co...

I have been liking your analyses up until this very post. I am sorry my friend, but you are starting to sound bias and prejudiced. It seems to me like anything English for you is the best. Today is not the day to engage. I would rather just chip in that you scale it down from like 10 to say 1.5
it's like you don't visit this thread often bro....
to my English brother.... he don't mind make case for a league 1 player for the super eagles in place of a Norwegian/Belgium league players.....

Newly invited Super Eagles’ midfielder Chidiebere Chijioke Nwakali, has said he’s determined to continue to strive harder to ensure he receives further call-ups to the team.

The on-loan Manchester City of England midfielder, who spoke exclusively with AOIFootball.com in Rabat after the team’s first training session, said he was excited about the amazing opportunity and hopes it won’t be the last for him.

“First and foremost, I must give thanks to God Almighty for this wonderful opportunity and also to the Super Eagles’ Coach Gernot Rohr.

“The aim of every youngster is to play for his National team and mine is no exception; the chance given to me by the coaches shows how much I must continue to strive hard to try to remain with the Super Eagles. I know it will be very difficult, but I believe I am up to the task,” Nwakali said.

The 20-year-old Sogndal of Norway player also praised the mood in the Super Eagles’ camp, while admitting that it was very easy for him to settle with the team despite been a first-timer.

“I must admit the atmosphere is electrifying and all the players are ready to deliver come Friday and we promise not to disappoint Nigerians.

“Settling down was very easy for me, because I know some players at youth level, but generally all players have been friendly to me and we are all ready for the games against Algeria and Argentina,” Nwakali concluded.

The midfielder will be hoping he earns his first senior cap on Friday night in Constantine.

Last I checked he is doing very well in Sweden, but people just don't like him and we are stuck with wingers like Simon Moses and Ahmed Musa, pathetic
so you mean obasi is better presently than Moses Simon?
you've not even make mention of olayinka who has much assist this season even as a winger.....

so please let's not start this....I know where this may head to....probably a clamour for the call of obasi.....
and my oga who knows how to rank leagues will jettison that parameters for another just to make case for him....

I won't be surprised if he says the Swedish league is ranked 7th in the world...after all only him know how this rankings and parameters works....

Russian league ranked 6th in Europe how many Nigerian play in that leaguehuh

Fegor Ogude plays in the same club as Brian Idowu forgotten to as well.

Why are they being forgottenhuh They are not youth players but seasoned professionals playing at a very good level regularly.

Or maybe they need to go to Norway in a backwater leagues and in a bottom club. Then they might be seen by the esteemed scouting team of the NFF.
