Afcon: Gernot Rohr hints at dropping a striker and a midfielder from Nigeria’s provisional squad

Last updated 3 hours ago

Ahead of Monday’s deadline for final team list, the German gaffer disclosed the areas where he might use to trim his squad to 23 players

Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr said that a forward and a midfielder could be dropped from the 25-man provisional team for his final squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Caf has set Monday, June 10 as the deadline for the 24 participating countries to send their final team list for the tournament which will begin in Egypt later in the month.

After Saturday’s friendly match against Zimbabwe at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, two players will be released before the team departs for the Egyptian city of Ismailia for final preparations.

Rohr stated that he has been impressed by the team’s overall preparation since Monday, when the camp opened in Asaba, which makes gives him difficulty in selecting his final squad.

“You know that everybody wants to come to Egypt and there are still two players to drop, so the competition is open and everybody wants to be in the final 23-man squad,” Rohr was quoted by AOIFootball.

“It will be very difficult for me and my staff to choose the final 23 because everybody is doing so well."

With proven strikers Victor Osimhen, Odion Ighalo and Paul Onuachu in the team, the 65-year-old disclosed that one of them has to go.

“We have a lot of strikers, which is good. Other teams are searching for center-forwards and we have three of them, one of them has to go. I could drop one striker and one midfielder," he added.

Before starting their Afcon campaign in Group B against Burundi, Madagascar and Guinea, the Super Eagles are scheduled to play against Senegal at the Ismailia Stadium on June 16.

iwobi is regarded as midfielder...
so dropping a one midfielder is understandable

allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
With uncertainty over the fitness of Katsina United's Ikechukwu Ezenwa, South African-based Daniel Akpeyi has been selected to be in between the pipes ahead of Francis Uzoho.

Chelsea's Kenneth Omeruo and Brighton's Leon Balogun start in central defense with Ola Aina and Jamilu Collins occupying the fullback positions.

Rohr has opted to play three midfielders with Obi Mikel, Oghenekaro Etebo and Alex Iwobi getting the nod.

FC Midtjylland's Paul Onuachu starts his second successive game for the Super Eagles and the lanky striker will be flanked by Samuel Chukwueze and Samuel Kalu.

Nigeria Starting XI : Akpeyi; Collins, Balogun, Omeruo, Aina; Mikel, Etebo, Iwobi; Samuel Kalu, Onuachu, Samuel Chukwueze

I know you want to see Ogu out of that list so bad, but let me tell you now, Ogu is going to AFCON.

We cannot afford to throw away midfielders, so, take your spotlight over to the defense, cuz you must not know Rohr very well, if you think he will drop Out.
nacho can be drafted to the midfield to cover up for iwobi in the AM

mikel/etebo as CM
Ndidi/Ajayi as DM...

so ogu can be excused

This just confirms my point.

She was a feminist because she is an evening newspaper, and desperately lacks preek.

Immediately a guy came, she dropped her useless feminism.

See guys, whenever you see a feminist, have pity on them, they live a very depressing life, and they cling on to feminism just to avoid suicide. You can even extend the pity by offering them preek aswell, let's help reduce depression among the evening newspapers.

Nonsense
Lol...most feminist I have been close to...

We gain nothing from it. How many African countries have even hosted commonwealth games?

They rotate it among themselves.

I want us to renegotiate our membership or withdraw from it.

However, I thought someone said Ndidi got work permit due to his salary.
I don't think that is possible if it was...Henry Onyekuru would have gotten his....

that commonwealth is a modernized slavery.... nothing to gain from it.
the school fees for education tourism still very expensive save for Canada...

England and Australian schools are more expensive than even America schools...

in accommodating immigrants from commonwealth nations...Britain have an obnoxious immigration rules...

so what are we gaining from it?
just an avenue to worship and honour the old British monarch

Is he eligible for work permit?

I don't know what we are gaining from being a commonwealth member.

I just believe England wants to Lord over us.
exactly what's the essence of this commonwealth membership...
even England can't give an exception for the possession of work permit...for a person that earn over 25k pounds per month.

such a person should be eligible for work permit.... at least it makes for flexibility

I strongly disagree with that. Does he have the passing ability/technique and vision to make that pass? There Iwobi trumps any day. Industry doesn't make a 10.
thank you....
the fundamental role of an AM is to link the midfield with the attack.....
and this often done by his ability to retain and release the ball when necessary by giving defensive split passes

timay:
By energy , you mean gra gra grin

Playing as an attacking Midfielder is much more than muscling your way in the midfield, it is about vision and pin point defence splitting passes.

If it is about the muscle and energy, people like Christen Eriksen, Dele Ali, Modric, Toni Kroos, that are known to be light weight and will not even thrive in the position.

Infact, that energy of his, is only needed in the wings to muscle and dribble, and it can be used in the middle as a defensive midfielder.

you want to deligate an Attacking midfield job to someone that can't even make accurate crosses most of the times.

Attacking midfield job that is not about sideways passing or your regular passing, it involves intelligent passing, that is different from the regular one.

A defence splitting passes is an attribute of an AM. Iwobi might not be the best Midfielder in the world, but he's intelligent with his passes. Even when he plays as a winger for Arsenal , the way he split defences with his passes even as a winger will make you just marvel.

Most of you pick on the guy whenever he has a bad game at Arsenal, which you all know is mostly not his fault, but people has made it into an habit to use him as a scape goat most of the time.

The Afcon qualifiers we played, Iwobi created more chances than any other midfielder during the qualifier, he was the reason we never missed Mikel in the creativity aspect during the qualifier, and I'm sure Mikel himself knows that he will probably have to be in top of his game if he doesn't want Iwobi to take his AM role in the competition, cos I don't see Rohr using him in the wings any time soon.

In conclusion, being an attacking Midfielder is much more than running aimlessly and muscling your way in the midfield. If you doubt me, ask Etebo. He was the person that we thought that will play our AMF after Mikel, but it is obvious the guy still needs to sort out his final passes. He only has strength and pace, that is why he was relegated to the central Midfield position
thanks bro...it Is obvious that many of us here are still conversant with the traditional role of an AM...

same way I laugh when some said Victor Moses should be played in the AM role then...
a player who barely release ball and not so good in giving killer passes.

Iwobi should be played as AM and Mikel CM he is the pirlo of the team and good in long range passes like the one given to ighalo against Cameroon.... while nacho can come in for iwobi always and Etebo for Mikel...and as for Ogu only God knows why he is in the team....

because I will take Semi Ajayi over him any day any time.....

I don't understand how rohr will trust a player who could miss a seater in the epl for the afcon job to deliver in goals.

He can play as a second striker but I doubt if he can play AMF.
An AM should be a good passer of the ball
someone that can comfortably link the midfield with the attack...

some one that can retain and release the ball quickly...when necessary.
some one that can give deadly pass and spot a striker well positioned from a distance....

that is an AM...

so can Moses Simon play this role?
the answer is NO..
