The formula is (a x b) + (b - 1)
(3 x 2) + (2 - 1) = 6 + 1 = 7
(5 x 4) + (4 - 1) = 20 + 3 = 23
(7 x 6) + (6 - 1) = 42 + 5 = 47
(9 x 8 ) + (8 - 1) = 72 + 7 = 79
(10 x 9) + (9 - 1) = 90 + 8 = 98

Nairaland / General / Onitsha-the Most Polluted City In The World- WHO by iamsoja(m): 1:41pm On May 15, 2016
The World Health Organisation has named Onitsha in Anambra State as the most polluted city in the world.
WHO, in its latest report on Global Urban Ambient Air Pollution, stated that a study of Onitsha’s water pollution found more than 100 petrol stations in the city, selling low-quality fuel, many rubbish dumps, fuel spills along with high levels of arsenic, mercury, lead, copper and iron in its waste and sewage.
The WHO said, “The level of pollution in Onitsha is getting increasingly serious. It is difficult to get accurate measurements in Africa. You can get super-high readings, but ideally the measurements should be done over a year to include different seasons and times of day. The reading in Onitsha may be representative but not altogether reliable.”

Onitsha with a population of 350, 000, tops the list in the WHO report, with a PM10 measure of 594. It is followed by Peshawar in Pakistan and Zabol in Iran.

In a statement issued, the global health body stated that more than 80 per cent of people living in urban areas were exposed to air quality levels that exceed WHO limits, while all regions of the world are affected, populations in low-income cities are the most impacted.

According to the latest urban air quality database, 98 per cent of cities in low- and middle income countries with more than 100, 000 inhabitants do not meet WHO air quality guidelines.

However, it noted that in high-income countries, the percentage decreases to 56 per cent.

In the past two years, the WHO added that its database, now covering 3, 000 cities in 103 countries, had nearly doubled, with more cities measuring air pollution levels and recognising the associated health impacts.

Nairaland / General / Dear Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo Of COZA by iamsoja(m): 11:36am On Feb 14, 2016
I am writing you today because I am a Christian myself. I am not writing this article to attack you; on the contrary, I am writing it to wake you up from sleeping in these dark hours. Jesus asked His disciples to pray, but they went to sleep instead. Believers have gone to sleep spiritually worldwide, especially in Nigeria. I want you to be awake to righteousness – (1st Corinthians 15:34 says, “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame”). I want to help you in the spirit of meekness – Galatians 6:1.

I saw a lot of tweets and Facebook posts by Nigerians expressing their disgust about the all white yacht party you did in Dubai. What is most worrisome is that the (touch not my anointed) believers won’t tell you that you are glamorizing the ministry by putting your lavish lifestyles on display and deceiving lazy Christians that the party in Dubai is what God wants, what God can do, and what God has provided.

You may ask why Nigerians are so angry. – Everybody wants nice things, right? And what better way to get them if God does it for you? Pastor Fatoyinbo, it is true that there is nothing wrong with having nice things. Everyone loves to have more and live a richer life but is that the only reason why we (should) go to church? We should also go to church because we love God, desire to worship God, draw closer to God and are in fellowship with other believers.

Your followers have defended you as expected – that most people who are frustrated by your unnecessary display of wealth are those who are struggling to get by day to day, trying to make ends meet, save enough to meet their needs and that of their families. Therefore, they are the ones finding it hard to digest your lavish lifestyle. How do we digest your lavish lifestyle ehn, knowing that you and many so called men of God are able to live this way because of people who give monetarily to support your ministry? You think anybody likes to feel like they are being hustled or pimped by their pastor for profit? People love God enough to give and trust that their money will be used to touch lives and souls with the Word of God and not to be used for throwing lavish birthday parties in Dubai.

Pastor Fatoyinbo: If you are going to build your own “kingdom,” do not build it on the backs of hardworking people who really just want a more intimate relationship with God and believe that you can point them in that direction. Don’t “floss” on the people; it is wickedness. It’s as if you’re saying, “Look at what I bought myself with your money. Don’t you like it? If you want it too, pray about it!”
American rapper Kanye West said in one of his songs, “I’ve been talking to God for so long, if you look at my life I guess he’s talking back.” But today, he is telling us he is Jesus “Yeezus”. He has deified himself. Pastor Fatoyinbo, your party in Dubai also suggests that you are deifying yourself, and on your own Yeezus tour, getting high on your own supply. Jesus said, “If I be lifted up.” (John 12:32) Unfortunately, you “with your lavish lifestyle” are lifting up yourself and making golden calf idols of your possessions. Pastor Fatoyinbo, unless you willfully left heaven to take on human form, lived out a nomadic ministry on the margins, was crucified for your ministry, died, was buried, then rose again — sorry to say, it’s not about you.

Your followers are defending your frivolities arguing that pastors are people too, human and flawed. Of course, they are. But as a pastor “you don’t show people your wounds, show them your scars.”You do so as evidence that the journey with God brings about healing and transformation. People need and want to be whole. The question Jesus asked was “do you want to get well?” (John 5:6 NIV)
Christians often ask why Davido and Wizkid and entertainers should be the only ones with Bentleys and mansions. First, Bentleys and mansions don’t measure the quality of one’s life. Secondly, entertainers are people selling what people choose to purchase — music, movies, etc. As ministers of the gospel you are not selling God and faith. The Gospel is free. The Bible is not the best-selling book in history because it has a good price point. It’s because people want to know God and know God loves them. Yes, there is a business side of ministry but literally for God’s sake, keep it to yourself. You don’t have to throw lavish parties as evidence of how much money you make. It only perpetuates the negative stereotypes true believers are constantly trying to disprove. Your expensive all white birthday party has only made people who are leery about church say “shebi I told you so.”

The mentality of most Nigerian believers that being rich and thinking money sets you free, gives you peace of mind and eliminates injustice, is a lie of the devil. Assimilation is not liberation. You can have all the things you want and still not be whole. The true test of how you live your life and success is what will be written in your obituary. What will people say about you, and what you did with your life? I’ve yet to see an obituary list all the expensive items someone owned. So, Pastor Fatoyinbo, go on your knees and cry to God for forgiveness.

Nairaland / General / Why Spend So Much On Burial? by iamsoja(m): 7:08pm On Sep 17, 2015
Chude is planning a trip to the village this yuletide season and has got it worked out but he is yet to figure out where to get the N1m he calculates he needs to travel with. He arrived at that figure after spending time consulting with family members in Abuja and in the village. The bulk of it will be spent as part of his contribution towards the burial of a senior member of his extended family. As the shining light of the family, he has little choice but to take responsibility even though the person who died wasn’t a direct relative.

Amongst the items he needs to spend money on are asoebi, cow, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, transport, food, among others. Any attempt to strike out any amount on that list is tantamount to a huge embarrassment to himself and his extended family. He had to perform even if it means borrowing from the bank.

Chude’s experience is not peculiar to him alone. A recent survey also suggests that the biggest risk to household income in Nigeria is illness or the death of a relative. This is because Nigerians spend a fortune on ceremonies especially burial ceremonies.

So much fanfare and tradition is attached to it that makes me wonder if we really need to spend all that money. Is there a better way of burying our loved ones in a dignifying manner?

Should the need to fulfil traditional rites always mean we must spend all our savings and even borrow just to comply? I personally believe that should not be the case as whatever situation you find yourself in financially should influence how much you should spend. Here are a few suggestions to spend reasonably;

Budget

The first amount you spend on burials are typical mortuary costs. So more often than not it is not budgeted for. However, every other thing you have to do should be included in a well prepared budget. I know budgets are boring and most don’t adhere to it. But think of it as a reality check and guide and you will appreciate how useful it can be. A budget is typically the first place to show signs that you might not be able to afford an elaborate burial ceremony.

Borrowing

I do understand that a need to bury a loved one may occur at a time of the month or year where cash flow is usually low. This could lead to the need to borrow some money from family or friends just to fund the burial expenses. However, what we shouldn’t do is borrowing an amount that we obviously cannot repay during the promised payback period.

Why ask for a loan of N1m to bury a loved one when your monthly income is just N200, 000? Another thing to avoid is borrowing from banks to finance a burial.

The interest rate element of such borrowing just makes it a disincentive for me and should be avoided at all costs.

Selling an asset

I have also heard of some people who would rather than not give a befitting burial, sell a valuable asset such as gold, cars or even a house just to fund a burial. I do not have issues with that provided you don’t go broke immediately afterwards. Sometimes, you wonder why that gesture could not be extended to the dead relative when they were alive.

I feel the tough question to ask yourself in that situation should be, would I sell this asset and give the cash to my relative if he or she were alive? If the answer is no, then I do not think selling your asset makes sense. But then, it is just my opinion.

Aso-ebi

This has become a very significant part of ceremonies across Nigeria. Be it a wedding, party, graduation, burial etc. People spend thousands of naira buying dresses in solidarity with a friend or loved one who is grieving or celebrating. I also do not have any issues with this provided it is not compulsory.

I have heard that some people use it as a way to help cover ceremony expenses. If that is the case, and your friends and family are happy to spend money on asoebi on your behalf, then the better for you.

Insurance

The insurance industry in Nigeria is coming of age and regularly introduce various insurance products. One of those I have heard of is insurance for burial expenses. I think it is a nice product to buy, if available, as death is as sure as anything else that could happen in life. In exchange for a premium you get a huge chunk of money to cater for burial expenses when they do occur.

Entertainment

This is perhaps the aspect of burial expenses that take up most of the cash. There are some burials you attend that make you wonder if you are in a party. I believe the amount you spend on entertainment depends on how solemn or grandeur you want the burial ceremony to be.

If you have the cash and want a lavish ceremony for a loved one then go ahead. However, if you do not have the cash there is no point trying to please anyone because what you end up doing is creating another problem for yourself.

When it comes to toileting habits, the topic is not exactly a favorite among people. Mention poop and you can easily clear a room – or at the least, generate some unusual facial expressions, nervous laughter, and wisecracks about "too much information.
The shape, size, color, and other fecal features can tell you a great deal about your overall health, how your gastrointestinal tract is functioning, and even give you clues about serious disease processes that could be occurring, like infections, digestive problems, and even cancer. Poop comes in just about all the colors of the rainbow... and please forgive me for using the words poop and rainbow in the same sentence.

Although there is a certainly a wide variety of stool colors, textures and forms that are considered "normal," there are definitely things that, if seen or experienced, warrant immediate medical attention. With this in mind, the overview that follows covers what you need to know about what's normal and not normal in the bathroom department.

What is Normal Stool?

Your stool is about 75 percent water. The rest is a fetid combination of fiber, live and dead bacteria, miscellaneous cells and mucus.1, 2 The characteristics of your stool will tell you a good deal about how happy and healthy your digestive tract is – the color, odor, shape, size, and even the sound it makes when it hits the water and whether it's a "sinker" or a "floater" are all relevant information.

If you're one to poop and scoot quickly out of the bathroom without looking in the toilet, then you might want to slow down and look down.
Look, Listen and Smell Before You Flush

What's normal and what's not when you look into the toilet? Of course, there are a few signs that ARE cause for concern, and those are listed too. If you have a change in stools accompanied by abdominal pain, please report this to your physician.

Does Your Stool Have a Really Bad Odor?

If your stool has an extraordinarily bad odor, it should not be ignored. I am referring to an odor above and beyond the normally objectionable stool odor. Stinky stool can be associated with a number of health problems, such as:

A malabsorptive disorder
Celiac disease
Crohn's disease
Chronic pancreatitis
Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a disease caused by a defective gene that causes your body to produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus, which builds up and causes life-threatening lung infections and serious digestive problems. Most cases of CF are diagnosed before the age of 2, so this is more of a concern with infants and toddlers.

Speaking of malodorous things, what about gas? Passing gas (flatulence) is normal. Not only is it normal, it's a good sign that trillions of hard working gut bacteria are doing their jobs. People pass gas an average 14 times per day – anywhere from one to four pints of it!8 Ninety nine percent of gas is odorless, so you may even be unaware you're passing it. Think about it – were it not for an exit, we'd all blow up like balloons!

Increased mucus in stool: This can be associated with inflammatory bowel disease like Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis, or even colon cancer, especially if accompanied by blood or abdominal pain

White, pale or gray stools may indicate a lack of bile, which may suggest a serious problem (hepatitis, cirrhosis, pancreatic disorders, or possibly a blocked bile duct), so this warrants a call to your physician; antacids may also produce white stool

Black, tarry stools or bright red stools may indicate bleeding in the GI tract; black stools can also come from certain medications, supplements or consuming black licorice; if you have black, tarry stools, it's best to be evaluated by your healthcare provider

Narrow, pencil-like or ribbon-like stools: can indicate a bowel obstruction or tumor – or worst case, colon cancer; narrow stools on an infrequent basis are not so concerning, but if they persist, definitely warrant a call to your physician

Healthy stool is:

• Medium to light brown
• Smooth and soft, formed into one long shape and not a bunch of pieces
• Quiet and gentle dive into the water...it should fall into the bowl with the slightest little "whoosh" sound – not a loud, wet cannonball splash that leaves your toosh in need of a shower
• Natural smell, not repulsive (I'm not saying it will smell good)
• Uniform texture and sinks slowly

Health / World's First Malaria Vaccine Approved by iamsoja(m): 9:30am On Jul 24, 2015
The world’s first malaria vaccine has received a green light from European drugs regulators who recommended it should be licensed for use in babies in Africa who are at risk of the mosquito-borne disease.

The shot, called RTS,S or Mosquirix, would be the first licensed human vaccine against a parasitic disease and could help prevent millions of cases of malaria in countries that use it.

The vaccine was developed by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in partnership with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative,

Recommendations for a drug licence made by the European Medicines Agency are normally endorsed by the European Commission within a couple of months.

Mosquirix, also part-funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will also now be assessed by the World Health Organisation, which has promised to give its guidance on when and where it should be used before the end of this year.

Malaria killed an estimated 584,000 people in 2013, the vast majority of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

More than 80 percent of malaria deaths are in children under the age of five.

Andrew Witty, GSK’s chief executive, said EMA’s positive recommendation was a further important step towards making the world’s first malaria vaccine available for young children.

“While RTS,S on its own is not the complete answer to malaria, its use alongside those interventions currently available such as bed nets and insecticides would provide a very meaningful contribution to controlling the impact of malaria on children in those African communities that need it the most,” he said in a statement.
