PoliticsAnambra Guber: Aspirant Kicks Against Pdp’s N10m Form by IB5(op): 11:06am On Aug 07, 2013
One of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the November 16 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, Mr. Nkem Ekweozoh has decried the N10 million price tag placed on the party’s governorship form, describing it as political exploitation of Anambra people.

The Nawfia-born legal practitioner cum politician noted that, “never had such a levy been imposed on aspirants in other parts of the country.” Ekweozoh while speaking to newsmen in Awka yesterday called on Ndi Anambra to rise against such exploitation, like Governor Peter Obi reportedly asked in 2002 when he first ran for the governorship seat, Ekweozoh queried, “Is Anambra cursed or are we the cause?”

He noted that each aspirant in the state had earlier paid N1 million to the party for expression of interest in the election, which had been slated for November 16.

The aspirant, who said he would pick the form on next Monday despite the cost, however, called on the national leadership of the party to adopt the Option A4 open ballot system in the conduct of the primaries.

According to him, the PDP primaries slated for Saturday, August 24 would achieve the desired goal of electing the party’s candidate for the November 16 gubernatorial election, if it was free, fair and transparent.

Ekweozoh noted that the problem of PDP in the past had been the manner in which its candidates were selected, which, to him, had been a kind of imposition, stressing that “when the people file behind the aspirant of their choice, the result will declare itself and the people will be satisfied.

“Nobody will complain if the primaries are transparent because all of us are determined to ensure that the PDP takes over Anambra State in the next election.

“But if the primaries are not transparent, there will be room for litigation, intrigues and acrimony, and you will see those who feel they were cheated working against the party in the main election. This is what I want PDP to avoid in this forthcoming election so that we will reclaim the Anambra Government House.” He however, enjoined all aggrieved members of the party to withdraw their litigations to ensure smooth conduct of the primaries and the governorship election.

“If things are properly done at this stage of the electioneering; nothing would stop PDP from reclaiming the state in the November 16 election,” he said.

I appeal to those constructing Mile12-Ikorodu road not to stop at Ikorodu roundabout, it will be great if they can apply the standard of construction to Shagamu-Ikorodu road.

ochukoccna: Thanks to the OP who started this thread which is something I sought to do earlier
This particular road was mentioned by Gov Amosun when the President came to launch the reconstruction of Lagos Ibadan Road to which the president said his Works minister would look into it
Even before that rumours abounded that CCECC who are working on the Ikorodu Town-Mile 12 road would fix it and get paid by Lagos and Ogun state govts
I do not want to get needlessly involved in the FG/LASG road brouhaha on repairing this road seeing LASG stopped fixing FG roads under OBJ
I call people to remember the politics that trailed FERMA under the Ministry of Works [headed then by a Lagosian Ogunlewe who is incidentally from Ikorodu] and Tinubu
Also the fireworks between FERMA and LASG regarding the currently been rebuilt Ikorodu Town-Mile 12 road
Currently FERMA is working on that road, but for how longhuh
I was in a BRT bus last week on this road when an old man called a FERMA official 'useless Federal government'
Harsh words you might say
Last year the president gave an order to the ministry of Works to make FG motor able for Christmas [If the FG roads were in good condition, would such a charge have come,I digress]
FERMA moved unto this road LAST YEAR SEPTEMBER 2012
Almost 12 calender months on working on this road, this is the best we have gotten
In saner climes someone would have been sacked or sued but I guess this is the FRESH AIR we must live with in this season of life

PoliticsAgony On Shagamu-ogijo mosinmi-ikorodu Road by IB5(op): 8:48pm On Aug 06, 2013
Naturally, I know the federal government is incompetent, so I won't bother to put much blame on them. But I don't know why Ogun state and Lagos state government also kept ignoring the road, like it is not in their states. angry
This road is the worst major road I have seen in the SouthWest

APPARENTLY, many Nigerians are not aware that the 25-kilometre Shagamu-Ogijo-Mosinmi-Ikorodu Road was the first major expressway that linked Lagos State, the commercial nerve of the nation, to other states and indeed, other West Africa countries.

Constructed in 1962 by the Western Region government, before the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was built under the military administration, the road has served as the major route from Lagos through Shagamu, Ogijo and Ikorodu. But today, the same road, which is an alternative route to Lagos, apart from Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, remains a shadow of itself.

As some of the road -users put it: “It is appalling that the once vibrant road remains without any major maintenance for over 51 years, after its construction.”

It is, indeed, a road that depicts rot in the entire country, “where necessary and vibrant institutions are left to rot.”

According to a commercial driver, Salisu Ajayi, “The Shagamu-Ogijo-Mosinmi-Ikorodu Road could be best described as a death trap, where  many have died, property worth billions of naira destroyed and several man hours wasted in harrowing traffic, all due to its deplorable state.”

Unfortunately, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is at present carrying out some palliative repair of the road, “Is that what we need now on a road that is in a total state of collapse?” a road-user asked.

Many commuters plying the road, while commending the Federal Government for reconstructing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with an additional one lane, expressed dissatisfaction over the complete neglect of Shagamu-Ogijo-Mosinmi-Ikorodu Road. To majority of them: “There is nothing to rejoice over because the additional one lane will soon take us back to where we were.”

The growing population, new property, which now spread from Ikorodu through Odogunyan, Ogijo, Simawa,

Mosinmi to Shagamu towns, bring to question: “Why should any nation, which cares about the well-being and security of her citizens and development, abandon such strategic and important road to become an eyesore and a death trap?”

Recurrent disaster and pains commuters go through while plying the roads reveal that at any drop of rainfall, numerous portions of the road, would become  a “sea”.

“From Odogunyan to PZ, Itaoluwo, Ogijo to Lukosi are overtaken by flood. Vehicular movements also become impossible. Many calamities befall commuters on the road as school children were sometimes swept by floodwater.

On June 10, two children were reportedly swept away by the flood along the road.”

Describing another portion of the road, which a commuter referred to as ‘junction of disaster’ a few meters before Ogijo Bus Stop, Ogun State axis, a tanker driver, Rafiu Aremu, said: “Hardly a week would pass away without one or two tankers loaded with fuel or other articulated vehicle somersaulting here due to the bad state.”

[b]The Guardian further gathered that on several ocassions, many articulated vehicles had rolled back and crushed vehicles coming behind while trying to climb the hilly part of the road.

A pregnant woman was once crushed to death inside her car when a tanker that was trying to climb one of the hilly parts of the road rolled back and crushed her.[b]  Some federal and state institutions situated along the axis include the Lagos State Polytechnic, Lagos State Farm Estate, PZ, Lagos Waste to Wealth Fertilizer Company, Larfarge Cement Company among others.

These explain the density of population and vehicular moment on the road.

The lawmaker representing Ikorodu in the House of Representatives, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who spoke with The Guardian on the state of the road, said it was disheartening to see a road like this in Nigeria in 21st Century.

Dabiri-Erewa added that the lawmakers representing Lagos and Ogun states were not resting on their oars in the National Assembly.

The Senator, representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa also described the state of road as appalling.

Meanwhile, two years ago the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) intervened by constructing a link road from Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to the Shagamu-Ogijo-Mosinmi-Ikorodu Road through Lotus-Simawa-Lukosi, which has given motorists and road –users some relief.

One of the most annoying parts of that road is when you have to divert from the road itself and drive through one cement factory to reach the other side. angry

EducationObafemi Awolowo University(oau) Rated The Best In Nigeria, Eighth In Africa by IB5(op): 11:34am On Aug 06, 2013
As a confirmation of its academic excellence and learning, the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State has again been rated the first and the best university in Nigeria and eighth in Africa.

A statement made available to THISDAY Monday, by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that the new webometric ranking released Monday by the Cybermetrics Lab of Spain (a world-renowned research council) and circulated round the world, moved the OAU higher on the ladder from number 14 to number eight position in Africa.

According to the statement, “this is a development that academic analysts and managements of universities in Africa have hailed as a monumental leap for educational advancement in Nigeria.

"Also in the history, this is the first time that a Nigerian university would be so ranked consecutively.

“The university was, early this year, rated by the Cybermetrics Lab of Spain as the first and the best university in Nigeria and 14th in Africa before the new webometric ranking that was released today (Monday).”

While reacting on the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Bamitale Omole, attributed the giant strides recorded by his administration to the unparalleled research output, administrative acumen, technical know-how of the academic, administrative and technical staff of the university.

He added that only a focused leadership, which was the hallmark of his management team, could produce such a spectacular feat.

Omole, however, applauded the dedication to duty of all stakeholders in making sure that the ideals of the founding fathers of the institution become a reality.

He urged the federal government not to relent in its efforts to improve the funding of education, particularly for the universities, so that the increased penchant for travelling abroad to undergo academic programmes that could be taught better by our lecturers here in Nigeria would be a thing of the past.

Education15-yr-old Wins National Mathematics Contest by IB5(op): 12:36pm On Jul 05, 2013
2013-07-04 23:00:42
A 15 year-old boy, Akindele Oyedele, emerged as the National Champion of the 2013 Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition on Thursday.

The pupil of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, a public school in Ogun State, scored 94 points out of a possible 100 to beat a 14-year-old pupil of Reality High School, Ilesa, Osun State, who scored 82 to clinch the second position.

Obasi Peter, 17, from the University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu, scored 81 points to clinch the third position.

Iganmode Grammar School has now won the competition back to back for three years. Akindele Nurein Oyetobi and Uwa Benjamin from the school had earlier won the competition in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

In the Junior Category, 13-year-old boy, Iyoha Omonzokpia of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, scored 93 points to beat Omojola Samuel, of Reality High School, Ilesha, Osun state, who scored 91 to clinch the second position. Amulah Caleb, 14, of Mount Saint Gabriel's School, Benue scored 89 to win the third position.

Over 30,000 pupils from different schools sat for the competition across over 200 centres in Nigeria.

Managing Director, Promasidor Nigeria Limited -- makers of Cowbell Milk, Chief Keith Richards, noted that the intensity, fortitude and integrity of the competition had been sustained since it started in 1998. He added that the competition was free and open to all secondary school pupils between ages 10 and 18.

Lamenting that education was declining in Nigeria, especially in the North, due to terrorism, he regretted that no pupil from the North-East schools participated in the competition.

Richards said, "In the last couple of years, we have struggled because of the activities of Boko Haram and other criminal terrorist organisations that are against education and by doing that, they are threatening the hope and the future of Nigeria's future generations and their children.

"Since the insurgency heightened, the level of participation in the North has reduced considerably. The results of this year's competition further lend credence to the downward trend of education advancement in Nigeria"

Although he acknowledged that Nigeria still had a bright future, Richards appealed to the government and other well-meaning Nigerians to "act fast and save the situation, as it may destroy the future of many."

Director-General, National Mathematics Centre, Prof. Adewale Solarin, at the event called on other private organisations to support educational programme.

He revealed that the centre had embarked on the training of students for the forthcoming Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad to be hosted by Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, who was represented by the Director, Science and Technology, Dr. Abass Adedibu, said mathematics and science play a significant role in the economic development of a nation.

Winning schools in the competition went home with Desktop computers and printers, apart from monetary gift to the winning pupils.

The best 10 pupils in the senior category were also given laptops.

Iganmode Grammar School won the Benson Oweka Memorial Prize for its consistent and outstanding performance for over three years.

A working government is one that is able to carry out projects without borrowing, and if at all there are needs to borrow, they should be for investment that will yield double result, I mean projects that will be productive.

Same goes to Lagos government and cross-rivers state government, these two states are of high debt profile.
The only gov. I know of is present oyo state government, working extensively without borrowing a dine and also being able to drastically increase the state income.

BY FEMI ADEKOYA BUSINESS SERVICES - BUSINESS NEWS

THE inclement operational environment in Apapa, Lagos business district, currently being accentuated by perennial traffic gridlock, may have informed plans by Honeywell Flourmills Plc to relocate its plants to Sagamu in Ogun state.
Specifically, the company noted that it was planning a bigger factory expansion as it had fully utilized the space allotted to it at the Tin Can Island Port in Apapa, Lagos.
Speaking at the company’s yearly customers’ forum in Lagos, Wednesday, the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the company, Babatunde Odunayo, noted that the move became necessary in order to cater for the growing demand of its products as well as innovative enterprise in the years to come.
Odunayo said: “Due to the congestion and space constraint at Tin Can Island Port, we have acquired 64 hectares of land around the Sagamu interchange along the Lagos – Ibadan expressway. This vast expanse of land will be used for future expansion including new Pasta, Noodles, and Flour factories for increased production of all our products. The future, indeed, looks very bright for all of us to grow our businesses.
“This expansion is therefore a further testimony of consumers’ confidence and wide acceptance of our products. We see this positive trend continuing and are very upbeat about the future growth and prospects for this company. And we know you will support us to achieve this goal.”
He explained that though the company had just merged with another entity, resulting in the emergence of a larger entity, there is a need to expand its operations to cater for growing customer demands.
“Towards the end of last financial year, following approval of the court and shareholders of the company, a business combination of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc and Honeywell Superfine Foods Ltd was effected. This led to the dissolution without winding up of Honeywell Superfine Foods Ltd and the company has now become the Ikeja Factory of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc. We now have the same Management for the combined business and have fully integrated all our internal processes for greater efficiencies and improved quality of service for you.
“We are pleased to inform you that we have successfully completed our expansion projects with the addition of two new mills which are state-of-the-art facilities designed, produced and installed by Buhler. With this expansion, we have increased our production capacity by about 62 per cent to be able to meet your increasing demand for our products. This will lead to business growth and more profits for you. The expansion project also included the completion of a-first-of-its-kind automated warehouse in Nigeria. These will all allow us to serve you better”, he added.
Speaking on the operating business environment, he explained that the company was able to cope with the harsh business environment despite the increase in duty on flour from 5 per cent to 20 per cent.
The company’s National Sales Manager, Seye Ogunwale said the company was rewarding customers as a result of their resilience and contributions towards the growth of the company.
Some of the customers however commended the company for keeping its commitment towards enhancing the value of their business.

A 17-year-old boy has been handed over to the Oyo State Police Command after he was caught by teachers at St. Luke Grammar School, Molete, Ibadan, while allegedly chanting incantations on a student at a nearby bush where the student had gone to ease himself.

The action, the teachers claimed, was to kidnap the victim

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, the suspect, Chukwu Chijoke, had claimed that the charm found on him was a gift from his grandfather, which has the powers to make him command anyone to do whatever he asked them to do.

But the suspect explained that the charm posed no evil on the student.

He said the name of the charm was “Ezebinafor” and that it was a gift from his grandfather for protection and to invoke command.
