Politics / Chinese Firm To Construct 2000 Housing Units In Ogun by IB5(f): 10:36am On Sep 26, 2013
The construction is being financed by the IFC and SWF.
The Ogun State Government and a Chinese Construction Company, Citic Construction Ltd., on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of 2,000 housing units.
The Investment Manager, Citic Construction, Robert Xu, made the disclosure in Abeokuta, after a meeting between representatives of the company and Governor Ibikunle Amosun.

Mr. Xu explained that the project would commence soon and would be financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF).
The manager gave assurance that the houses would be affordable, adding: “all classes of people will be taken into consideration’’.
The Country Manager of IFC, Solomon Adegbie-Quaynor, told newsmen that the houses, when completed could be acquired through outright purchase or mortgage.

He said Ogun was being used as a test ground, adding that the gesture would later be extended to other parts of the country.
The Ogun governor, Ibikunle Amosun, said that the development was part of the government’s efforts to provide affordable housing for the people and enhance urban renewal.
He said that his administration was rebuilding the state to make it “the investment destination of choice’’.

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ogun-to-establish-rice-processing-factory/159822/
In its determination to further increase its economic base, the Ogun state government is to establish a rice processing factory in Eggua, Yewa North Local Government Area of the state.
The factory, which is expected to commence operation in the first quarter of next year, will process and package large volume of rice that will serve industries and for local consumption, in the state, the South-West and beyond.

It is also hoped that the factory will also provide gainful employment to teeming Ogun State youths who are desirous of contributing their quota to the government’s mission to rebuild the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, made this known while launching the planting of 20 hectares of Nerita 8” - New Rice for African 8 - the major material for the proposed rice processing factory at the State Plating Project in Eggua.

The commissioner, who said a total of 100 hectares would be planted and cultivated in all in partnership with local farmers and co-operatives, solicited support for government's effort at making the project a reality.

She however appealed to Fulani herdsmen in the area to stay away from the project site as the state government cannot afford to allow its resources and efforts go down the drain because of cattle grazing.

Speaking at the project site, the Eleggua of Eggualand, Oba Adeleye Dosumu, commended the state government for its foresight and the decision to site the project in his domain. He assured the government of adequate security at the project site and also the support of his people to the various developmental programmes embarked upon by the state government.

Nigeria’s Federal Government on Wednesday directed Julius Berger to begin rehabilitation of the bad portions on Lagos-Ibadan expressway to reduce hardship faced by motorists.
The Director of Federal Highways (South West), Federal Ministry of Works, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“I was on the site and told Julius Berger to start patching the potholes. I believe by now they have started,” he said.
He said the company initially had a problem on where to build its site yard but the problem had been resolved.
Abdullahi said the process for the release of the 15 per cent contract sum to the company for the project was almost completed.

Politics / Lagos-ibadan Expressway: President Jonathan Lies Again by IB5(f): 12:41pm On Sep 16, 2013

Fejiro Oliver

On the 5th of July 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan flagged off the reconstruction and expansion works on the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in a huge ceremony at the Sagamu Interchange. During his speech, Mr. Goodluck told the excited crowd that adequate funds have been provided by his government for the project.

The N167 billion project was contracted to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc and Reynolds Construction Company Ltd. The multi billion project is expected to be completed in 48 months.

“We have made adequate funds arrangement and we shall deliver our pledge on schedule. Comprehensive construction is overdue which is why we went into partnership with reputable companies. Today we are commencing the road and we shall deliver on time. We shall deliver dividends of democracy”, he said

Fact findings carried out by this reporter to see if work has commenced on the road showed that Mr. Goodluck has once again lied to Nigerians, by selling a dummy to them on the availability of funds for the project. On September 12th , 2013, the Federal Government mandated the Infrastructure Bank Plc to raise the much advertised N167 billion required for the construction of the 127 kilometer Lagos-Ibadan dual carriage way, thus contradicting his earlier claims that funds were already available to kick start the project.

The recent lies by the Goodluck led administration shows that the fund has not been raised, neither is it available, yet they have flagged off the reconstruction of the roads and awarded the contract. Nigerians who plied the road last week Friday told this reporter that there is no single tractor on the road, neither is there any work going on, two months after a huge fanfare and promises to fix the road.

Some of the respondents described this latest soap opera by Jonathan as ‘yahoo yahoo’ and a lie too many by a president. It would be recalled that Mr. Goodluck has taken to deceiving the nation on various issues as a hobby. Last year, he lied on Nigeria’s rating by Transparency International as well economic statistics, while his aides lied about his wife, Mrs. Patience Jonathan illness.

Politics / Fasheun's OPC Faction Clashes With Police While Launching UPN by IB5(f): 5:07am On Aug 28, 2013
Dr. Fasheun's OPC Faction clashes with police while launching UPN

28 Aug 2013
There was confusion in Iju-Ishaga, a suburb of Lagos, Tuesday  as police officers attached to the Ishaga Divisional Headquarters clashed with some factional members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).

It was gathered that trouble started when policemen on patrol stopped the OPC convoy, which was moving towards Agege, where they had aimed to launch a unit of the congress in the area.

According to reports, some OPC members allegedly ignored police’s orders and when they were threatened with arrest, they were said to have brought out their guns and started shooting into the air.

According to an eyewitness account, the policemen fought back by firing canisters of teargas into the group.  At the end of the altercation, which lasted for about an hour, six members of the factional group were arrested.
When contacted by journalists, one of the factional leaders of OPC, Chief Gani Adams, claimed those involved in the clash were not his members.

He said: "Those who clashed with the police are never our members. They are Dr. Fasheun's people. Our findings revealed that they are launching a political party called Unity Party at Amao Street in Agege today (yesterday). It was on their way to the place that they clashed with the police.

“It is unfortunate that at this level of our political history, some people still believe they can lead a group they cannot control. You don’t lead an organisation you cannot control. “

Attempts to contact Dr. Frederick Fasheun proved abortive but an OPC member who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the incident, adding that the dispute had been resolved.
As at press time, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was not available for comment as she was said to be in a meeting.

Crime / Trouble In Family: Wife Paid N80,000 For Rival’s Assassination by IB5(f): 10:06pm On Aug 27, 2013
By Ola Ajayi
Did a housewife hire an assassin to kill her rival? Or did the family night guard try to assassinate his master’s wife? These are the knotty questions the police in Ibadan, Oyo State capital are attempting to answer after a suspected hired assassin, Ikechukwu Christopher, was arrested.
The suspect was said to be on his way from Enugu to Ibadan to carry out the assassination when he ran into the police. A locally-made single barrel gun and a woman’s photograph found on him gave him away. He was taken into custody.

Ikechukwu named one Adenola Adeniyi, a former timber contractor, based in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, as his sponsor. The police went after Adeniyi who, in turn, named one Arowolo Lateef as the person who gave out the assassination job. Assassination fee was put at N80,000.

The police alleged that a woman, identified as Mrs. Funke Abidoye, contracted Lateef, the family nightguard, now apprehended, to assassinate the husband’s junior wife, Ololade.

But the nightguard denied the claim, saying he was the mastermind of the murder plot to avenge the ordeal of the first wife, Funke, in the hands of Ololade.

Meanwhile, Funke is said to be on the run.

Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, narrating the story, said Ikechukwu, the suspected hired assassin, confessed that he was contracted by Adeniyi and Lateef to kill Ololade, “Based on his confession, the said Adenola was arrested and he too corroborated the statement made by Ikechukwu and added that he was hired by Arowolo at the rate of N80,000”, Indabawa said.

He continued: “Investigation revealed that Arowolo hired them at the rate of N80,000. After a diligent investigation, the said Arowolo too was arrested and he confessed that one Funke, the first wife to one Muyiwa Abidoye, hired him to kill the younger wife. He explained further that he, as the husband’s night guard, was contracted by the first wife to look for hired assassins that would kill the younger wife.

“Items recovered from the three suspects are one locally made single barrel, one dane gun, eight live cartridges, one expended cartridge, one dismantled locally made gun, two cutlasses, eight handsets, one nylon containing criminal charms, photographs of Mrs. Ololade Abidoye and her husband, Muyiwa Abidoye found on the prime suspect, Ikechukwu. Meanwhile, the second wife who was said to have contracted the arrested suspects to kill her colleague has absconded from her matrimonial home. Efforts are on top gear to prosecute the arrested suspects”.

But, Arowolo denied being contracted by the first wife as alleged by the police, stressing that he just wanted to kill the younger wife in annoyance and to avenge the ordeal the first wife suffered because of her younger wife.

Ikechukwu confessed that his boss in Enugu gave him the contract to carry out the assassination. “But, when I was going, the police stopped me and found the pistol I was carrying. I was arrested and taken into custody”.

When asked why he was the person his boss in Enugu instructed to commit the crime if he had not done anything like that before, he answered that he learnt the act of shooting through hunting game and he had never been involved in killing anybody.

Adeniyi said he was in Ago Iwoye as a timber contractor when the business went under and Arowolo offered to help.

“He gave me a motorcycle to work and he did not collect any money from me. After sometime, he told me a woman was owing him N20million and for three years, she had been avoiding him. I asked him the business he transacted with the woman but he told me to help him look for hired assassin to kill the woman. After sometime, he started to threaten me. I later got in touch with one man who now linked me with a man at Enugu”.

Politics / Ogun Commissions Community Electrification 13 Years After by IB5(f): 9:37pm On Aug 27, 2013

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bashorun Muyiwa Oladipo, who represented governor Ibikunle Amosun at the commissioning, said the contract, which was awarded in 2001, shocked suffered a setback due to inadequate financial backing.

According to Oladipo, the situation was salvaged through the intervention of Hon. Rotimi Rahman, Chairman, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, who completed the project and provided a 500KVA transformer to enhance the power distribution to the community.
Politics / Fashola Hosts Russian Ambassador, Seeks Nig-russia Cooperation In Railways. by IB5(f): 5:38am On Aug 20, 2013
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola(SAN), yesterday canvassed mutual collaboration between Nigeria and Russia in the development of rail transportation, saying it was the only way to safeguard and guarantee long life span for roads and highways across the country.

Fashola, who spoke in Lagos House, Alausa, while hosting the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Nickolay Udovichenko, said Nigeria, needs to take a lot of cargo off her highways in order to extend their lifespan.
Noting that Russia has already developed such a technology, he said it was necessary that government, showed interest and begin talks with Russia to imbibe and adapt the technology in order to take more goods and heavy duty cargo off her highways.

“One thing that has interested me is the success of the Russian Railway and the expanse of development it has achieved over the years and, if I am not mistaken, the trucking by rail of several millions of cargo over about 9, 000 kilometres yearly. These are areas where, even as a country, Nigeria urgently needs to develop”, the Governor.

He told the Ambassador, “We need to take a lot of cargo off the roads, and if that technology already exists in a place like Russia, I think that our Government, not only at the state level but also at the national level, should also be showing interest and talking to you because that is the only way that I know that we can prolong the life of our roads and major highways across the country; if we can get more goods, more heavy duty cargo trucked by rail”.

“So these are some of the areas that I think in terms of economic cooperation between our two countries and the states that are consisting of those two federations and also that a lot can be done. I think your visit sets the ball in motion and I am anxious, to put it mildly, to explore possibilities”, he said.

Noting the desire of the Ambassador for collaboration in cultural and business exchanges between Lagos and Russia, Governor Fashola declared, “I am sure you will be hearing a lot more from our agencies in the next few weeks and in the next few months”, .
tion to him to visit Saint Petersburg, Governor Fashola, who said he had known much about the history and rich tradition of the city as a student of European History hinted that his team would visit the city in due course.

“St. Petersburg is a city that I am familiar with as a student of European History so I have some knowledge of its history and its very rich tradition even in the old Soviet Union and I have kept some track of its development in the advent of what one may call a more democratic Russia today. I certainly look forward ultimately in meeting the Governor”, he said.
Thanking the Ambassador for the courtesy of his visit, Governor Fashola pledged, “I will only commit that our Government here will give you that support that you need to discharge your responsibilities efficiently. I thank you for the courtesy of this visit and for your condolence message and you have my assurances for a very successful tenure and the support of all our team”.

Earlier, in his opening remarks, the Russian Ambassador, who condoled with the Governor over the passage of his father, also expressed the desire to discuss bilateral and business relations with Lagos saying he had heard a lot of reports about the Governor which, according to him, “are very positive”.
“I arrived here three months ago and I have heard a lot from people who tell me your activities in Lagos and I salute your efforts to improve the life in Lagos”, the Ambassador said adding that in terms of bilateral relations with Nigeria he intends to be a facilitator and not a mediator.

Expressing the strong desire to boost the political and economic relations already existing between the two countries, especially in the areas of Education, the Ambassador pledged to do his best to realize and deepen the relationship during his tenure.
He said the desire of the Governor and his team to visit Saint Petersburg was welcome and the government was eagerly waiting to receive the team from Lagos and to start a possible cooperation between the City and Lagos.

“Saint Petersburg is a city of only, I can say, about five million people. It is not very much like Lagos, but it is a very historical city”, the ambassador said adding that he had no doubt that the Governor and his team would admire it.
Noting that he had been in discussion with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), the Ambassador also promised to invite a business delegation not only to Nigeria but to Lagos adding, “I consider that Lagos is a very big city, the centre of business of this country”.

According to the Ambassador, who said he would also try to invite the Russian cultural group to come and perform in Lagos, “I am ready to work hard in order to improve our bilateral relationship”.
Also present, were the Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and Tourism and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Disun Holloway, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Prince Segun Oniru, the Acting Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Chief Henry Oladele Ajomale and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Foreign Relations, Ms Toyin Caxton-Martins, while the Ambassador was accompanied by the Senior Counselor, Economic Affairs of the Embassy, and Counselor, Head of Lagos Offic.

I also though about that report about Ngige being stoned and booed in Akwa on Nairaland's front page some days ago..
Because no single newspaper carried it nor any TV station casted it.
I searched the web for the heading as it was written on nairaland: "Anambra Youth Stone, Boo Ngige’s In Awka"
But I was directed to the same site that the OP that posted it on nairaland copied it from
http://247ureports.com/anambra-youth-stone-boo-ngiges-in-awka/
Some other blogs that copied it from that 247ureports.com and a site called spyghana. This same spyghana(I assume a ghanian site) is the one debunking the untruthful story http://www.spyghana.com/ngige-stoned-malaria-is-at-work/

I did a brief check on that site (247ureports.com) where it originated from, it seems it is one site owned by an Igbo person, and it mainly deals with Southeast politics.

But don't we have any Nairaland member that stays in Anambra that could have told us the worthiness of that story at first, when all of them that have access to the internet have moved to Lagos undecided

I think Nairaland should do little verification about the topics before posting it on the front page, some are misleading and could damage people's reputation.

Politics / Re: Debt Profile Of Nigerian States. party-by-party Basis. by IB5(f): 8:03am On Aug 09, 2013
Since the Op has made it a party thing, I think the high debt profile of states in southwest is the handiwork of those in power in previous eight years(PDP) before the present ACN governors got into power, except for Lagos state which is expected of her. Being the most populous state(16-20million) in Nigeria, Lagos' population is more than the combination of Rivers, Anambra, Oyo and Akwa-Ibom. Lagos is the highest contributor to the nations economy, but she is not receiving 13% derivative like the oil producing states are from their contribution of mineral resources. Let's assume Lagos is receiving 13% derivative like these oil producing state, do we think Lagos would have had an high debt profile. Lagos is the first choice of any graduate in Nigeria to get job, which makes the state to have too many people to cater for, yet no reasonable special consideration is given to lagos by the federal government in the monthly allocation. Lagos has a population of around 20million, yet Akwa-Ibom that has a population or around 3million plus has a higher monthly allocation, due to special consideration for oil producing states.

Enough of the stories, let's come down to My Ibadan, Oyo state.
Oyo state (APC) owes $76.6million, from the list the op gave.
And from this report below, Oyo has not borrowed anything since Ajumobi cam into power. Meaning the $76.6million that Oyo is owing is solely the work of those before him, the PDP governors.

Oyo State Hasn’t Borrowed A Dime In 2 Years – Ajimobi

The second half of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi administration in Oyo State was on Friday heralded with prayers, with the Governor declaring that his government, despite the huge number of projects being undertaken by it, had not borrowed a single naira from any quarters in the last two years.

The Governor spoke at an inter-faith service organized to mark the second anniversary of his administration at The Remembrance Arcade, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to the Governor, this was achieved through his administration’s financial engineering and deft management of Government’s meager resources.

The service witnessed the assemblage of traditional rulers, eminent personalities, opinion leaders, members of the State Executive Councils, the Legislators, Judicial officers, market men and women, politicians as well as Islamic and Christian religious leaders who led prayers for the State and the Government.

Governor Ajimobi, who assessed his administration in the last two years and gave himself pass mark, said that the contracts awarded by his government included construction of roads and road dualization, bridges, motor parks, neighbourhood markets and other development projects.

Interestingly, the Governor said that his government had not borrow a dime to execute those projects, all of which he said had changed the face of the State.

“I am happy to inform you all that in spite of all the projects that we have executed and are still executing, Oyo is one of the three out of the 36 States in Nigeria that has not taken any loan,’’ he said.

The Governor also said that the remaining part of his administration would be devoted to the construction of N52 billion 108-kilometre Ibadan Circular Road with development corridors, mass housing schemes, logistics centres, cargo airport and two five-star hotels, one of which is already being constructed.

Governor Ajimobi, who expressed his commitment to transforming the State to an enviable position, thanked the people of the State for their cooperation and support which he said was unprecedented in the history of the State.

“We are very happy with ourselves and with what we have done. What we are trying to do to bring back the Oyo State that we used to know, that is, to restore the lost glory of our State,’’ he said.

According to him, the purposeful leadership being given by his administration, as well as the entrenchment of peace and security and the Urban Renewal Programme had led to the influx of both local and foreign investors into the State.

Already, he said that four foreign firms had moved to the State to establish soya milk, bread baking and day old chick factories respectively, adding that these would contribute effectively to the rapid economic growth of the State.

Sermons were delivered by the Presiding Bishop of Rehoboth Cathedral, Ibadan, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun and the Chief Missioner of Ansar-Ud-Deen Society, Kano Branch, Sheikh Muyideen Bello.

Bishop Adelakun, for instance, urged the people of the State to avoid blind criticism, to be objective, principled, fair and factual, and to always pray for the Governor and his administration so as to lead the State to the Promised Land.

Sheikh Bello, on his own, congratulated the Governor for giving good name to the State, stressing that the State which used to be identified with thuggery, violence and brigandage was now at peace, with the people now sleeping with their two eyes closed

And nothing is different about that of Ogun state. Gbenga Daniel from the PDP borrowed millions of dollars with nothing to show for it.
Can we comapare those two guys, as in who has brought meaninful development to ogun?
I don't know of the PDP in other states, but PDP is SouthWest is a curse.

This particular road was mentioned by Gov Amosun when the President came to launch the reconstruction of Lagos Ibadan Road to which the president said his Works minister would look into it
Even before that rumours abounded that CCECC who are working on the Ikorodu Town-Mile 12 road would fix it and get paid by Lagos and Ogun state govts
I do not want to get needlessly involved in the FG/LASG road brouhaha on repairing this road seeing LASG stopped fixing FG roads under OBJ
I call people to remember the politics that trailed FERMA under the Ministry of Works [headed then by a Lagosian Ogunlewe who is incidentally from Ikorodu] and Tinubu
Also the fireworks between FERMA and LASG regarding the currently been rebuilt Ikorodu Town-Mile 12 road
Currently FERMA is working on that road, but for how long
I was in a BRT bus last week on this road when an old man called a FERMA official 'useless Federal government'
Harsh words you might say
Last year the president gave an order to the ministry of Works to make FG motor able for Christmas [If the FG roads were in good condition, would such a charge have come,I digress]
FERMA moved unto this road LAST YEAR SEPTEMBER 2012
Almost 12 calender months on working on this road, this is the best we have gotten
